Piper Sandler Companies (PIPR) Q2 Earnings and Revenues Beat Estimates

Following quite encouraging news from the laboratory on Monday, Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN) was something of a stock market favorite the following day. Its shares closed the trading session more than 4% higher on the back of both that sentiment and a pair of optimistic analyst takes on the latest development. With that share price rise, Amgen easily beat the S&P 500 index, which slid by 0.1%.
Cancer drug does well in testing
That news concerned Amgen's investigational stomach cancer drug, bemarituzumab. The company announced Monday that, in combination with chemotherapy, the treatment met its primary endpoint of of overall survival for the patients tested in a phase 3 clinical trial. It compared favorably to the results of patients only taking a placebo and receiving chemotherapy.

The study had an enrollment of 547 patients who suffered from certain types of unresectable locally advanced or metastatic gastric or gastroesophageal junction (G/GEJ) cancer. Amgen pointed out in its press release on the trial's results that gastric cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer-related death in the world, with over 650,000 fatalities.
The two immediate analyst reactions to the news were both positive and complimentary. Piper Sandler's David Amsellem reiterated his overweight (i.e., buy) recommendation and $328 per share price target. According to reports, Amsellem said that while there were some concerns with the study, its results were positive, and Amgen could have quite a successful drug on its hands.
Potential blockbuster?
As cancer is a persistent and tough challenge, any advancement in its treatment is cause for optimism. While Amgen could have provided more details of the study (it pledged to do so in an unspecified presentation in the near future), the rough outlines of bemarituzumab are encouraging. The company might very well be on the cusp of success with the drug.

Why Amgen Stock Popped by 4% Today

Nike (NYSE: NKE) stock has been in a downward spiral for the past three years as sales declined, and it appeared to be losing its edge.
But all hope is not lost. The company just reported a strong earnings beat, and it's the leader, by far, in its industry. In fact, one Wall Street analyst sees Nike stock shooting 60% higher over the next 12 to 18 months even after it jumped 15% after earnings.

Getting back in the game
Nike has been dealing with multiple mishaps. It's reestablishing partnerships with wholesalers after cutting some of them out a few years ago; it's getting back on top of its innovation pipeline; and it's going back to sports after prioritizing lifestyle products.
It has a new CEO whom the investing community is pumped about, and he's been making changes that the market is liking. A full turnaround is still in the works, but Nike reported better-than-expected earnings for the 2025 fiscal fourth quarter (ended May 31), and it looks like the plan is taking shape.
Sales were down 12% from last year in the quarter, with Nike Direct sales down 14%. Gross margin declined by 4.4 percentage points to 40.3%, and earnings per share dropped 86% to $0.14. If that doesn't sound so great to you, consider that Wall Street was expecting only $0.12.
Although there's a long way back up, the market appreciated Nike's update and reassurance about how it's progressing. CEO Elliot Hill restructured innovation to focus on lines rather than categories, keeping the athlete at the center. It also widened its wholesale channels to reach more customers in more places, including premium chain Aritzia and Urban Outfitters, which is geared toward the younger shopper. Notably, it's going back to selling on Amazon after a very public breakup five years ago.
Hill, a Nike veteran who's been in the lead role since October, gave some important examples of progress:
Launches through wholesale partners Dick's Sporting Goods and JD.com led to higher sales.
The day before it hosted a race at its LA-based store at the Grove, a premium shopping center had its highest sales in three years.
It presented its best looks from the French Open finals, leading to a 30% sales increase day to day.
Is Nike losing its grip on first place?
Nike's lead against its competition is so wide that it really has no competition, at least for first place. That gives it some wiggle room to fix its mistakes and work things out before the situation escalates, but investors shouldn't ignore the risks.
Some of its competitors have been posting much better performance despite operating in the same environment. Lululemon Athletica, which hasn't been impressing the market lately, still reported a 7% sales increase in its most recent quarter, and new brand On Holding reported a gargantuan 43% increase.
I often cite the Piper Sandler Taking Stock With Teens survey as a good glimpse of how younger customers are shopping because their trends drive future growth. Nike has been in first place for favorite shoe brand for years, and it remained in first place in the recent spring update.
However, Nike's share fell from recent averages of around 60% to only 49%. Converse, which has recently featured in the No. 2 spot, wasn't in the top three.
These findings aren't alarming, but investors should take them into account when making decisions.
A global industry leader
Nike is still the brand to beat, and as it progresses, it's looking more likely to make a real comeback. Several Wall Street analysts upgraded their price targets after the recent report, including HSBC, which upgraded the stock to a buy and gave a price target of $80. Jefferies maintained its price target of $115, which is 60% higher than the stock's recent price.
Nike also pays a growing dividend that yields 2.2% at the current price, which makes it attractive for passive income investors even while the company is still struggling.
If you have a long timeline, you could buy Nike stock today and enjoy the dividend while the stock gets back to work. It's a blue chip stock that should bounce back and offer resilience over time.

Apple and the ecosystem
Apple has a wide ecosystem of products and services that generates long-term loyalty and engagement. The company has always been focused on the user experience, with well-designed products that work. The iPhone is its premier product, with more than 2.3 million in circulation, and fans tend to upgrade at high rates.
There's been some lumpiness with iPhone sales over the past few years, since customers bought more phones when the pandemic started, and growth has tapered off. In the fiscal 2025 second quarter (ended March 29), iPhone sales inched up only 2% over last year. However, these users will be due for new phones over the next few years, steering the growth cycle back to historical norms.
Apple has been able to monetize its users with higher-margin services like streaming and fitness apps, which lead to a stronger bottom line. As users engage more with Apple's platform, it reinforces the ecosystem in a positive cycle. Service revenue was up 12% year over year in the second quarter, and earnings per share increased 8%.
This may be why Apple has been slower on the AI uptick than investors have been expecting. Unlike other AI companies like Nvidia and Amazon, Apple's AI platform, Apple Intelligence, is a consumer-facing service rather than a platform or product for developers. Like the rest of its ecosystem, its interest is in producing tools that enhance the user interface and keep its customers happy. Apple is not the kind of company that's going to launch new products or features for hype. It's all about quality, which is why its products are expensive, and for most of its users, worth it.
This ecosystem creates a "stickiness" that makes Apple a great company. Warren Buffett has described it as a "very, very, very special product, and which has an enormously widespread ecosystem, and the product's extremely sticky."
The ecosystem means that customers don't have to go outside of Apple for almost anything tech-related. They can listen to content on Apple Podcasts, stream on Apple TV+, make purchases with Apple Pay, and take pictures with the highly acclaimed iPhone camera. Apple Intelligence will impact these functions with a unified model that should provide benefits across the platform.
Early engagement and long-term rewards
Given the sticky ecosystem, there's a metric every Apple investor should see that bodes well for Apple's long-term success. According to the spring 2025 Piper Sandler Taking Stock With Teens survey, 88% of teens own an iPhone; 25% of them plan to upgrade to an iPhone 17 next year, up from 22% last year.
This is Apple's sticky ecosystem in action. It's attracting younger customers, and as they engage with the platform and become loyal fans, that's a long-term revenue stream. It has a head start on competitors by capturing a younger market, and it has already has a huge lead.
While developers and investors bemoan the state of Apple Intelligence, young users are satisfied with their products. This is the audience that Apple needs to please, and getting it right is all the more important to keep them in the ecosystem.

Among the 24 analysts covering the stock, the consensus rating is a “Moderate Buy.” That’s based on 16 “Strong Buy” ratings, one “Moderate Buy,” and seven “Holds.”
The configuration is slightly more bullish than three months ago, when 15 analysts gave the stock a “Strong Buy.”

For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect USB’s EPS to grow 8.3% year over year to $4.31. The company’s earnings surprise history is promising. It topped the consensus estimates in each of the last four quarters.
Among the 23 analysts covering the stock, the consensus rating is a “Moderate Buy” which is based on 10 “Strong Buy,” three “Moderate Buy,” nine “Hold,” and one “Strong Sell” rating.

Many investors spent April worrying about the effect of the still-fresh tariff war on their holdings. To hedge against this concern, they sought out stocks considered to be relatively well insulated from possible sudden price spikes of materials and components made abroad.
Enter Chewy (NYSE: CHWY), the next-generation pet food and supply specialist. Chewy fit the profile of a solid, domestically oriented company, and investors piled into the stock. It exited April with an over 15% gain across the month.

Top hedging candidate
What helped enormously with the narrative that Chewy is a fine hedge was that it was promulgated during the month by several analysts tracking the company.
Citigroup, for one, flagged Chewy in a re-evaluation of top retail stocks it published just after the Trump administration annonuces a slew of "reciprocal" tariffs. According to reports, Citigroup's take was that big retailers were most exposed, owing to their considerable imports of goods from affected nations such as China and India.
On the flip side, Citigroup elevated -- or maintained its bullish views on -- several stocks that it considered to be less dependent on manufacturing from such nations. Chewy was one that the bank left intact as a buy.
Analysts weren't only bullish on the pet goods purveyor because of its domestic focus. Piper Sandler's Anna Andreeva pointed to several solid fundamental reasons for investing in the stock. Just after the Citigroup note was published, she disseminated an update, in which she reiterated her overweight (read: buy) recommendation and $40-per-share price target.
In Andreeva's view, according to reports, the U.S. is set for a rise in overall pet ownership, particularly of cats. She added that veterinarians increasingly favor Chewy's healthcare products. Finally, she commented that Chewy is one of her company's favorite stock titles at the moment.
A company that's maturing well
Chewy's days of white-hot growth are behind it as it matures into a new stage of development -- rather like a puppy or a kitten who's growing up. Yet the company continues to post encouraging growth numbers, not least because it's cleverly pushed its Autoship renewal program on its customers. This approach builds ever-valuable recurring revenue while increasing customer loyalty.
I think the tariff hedge story will fizzle out before long, not least because President Trump and his team have shown a clear willingness to either compromise or carve out significant exemptions. But that leaves the fundamental story with Chewy, and in its case the tale is a compelling one. I'd be on the side of those bullish analysts in considering the company's stock a fine buy candidate.
