Oversold Conditions For Vaxcyte (PCVX)

Investors eyeing a purchase of Vaxcyte Inc (Symbol: PCVX) shares, but cautious about paying the going market price of $31.11/share, might benefit from considering selling puts among the alternative strategies at their disposal. One interesting put contract in particular, is the December put at the $20 strike, which has a bid at the time of this writing of $1.95. Collecting that bid as the premium represents a 9.8% return against the $20 commitment, or a 14.7% annualized rate of return (at Stock Options Channel we call this the YieldBoost).
Selling a put does not give an investor access to PCVX's upside potential the way owning shares would, because the put seller only ends up owning shares in the scenario where the contract is exercised. And the person on the other side of the contract would only benefit from exercising at the $20 strike if doing so produced a better outcome than selling at the going market price. Commit To Buy Vaxcyte At $20, Earn 14.7% Annualized Using Options

Vaxcyte PCVX is a clinical-stage biotech focused on developing vaccines to prevent or treat bacterial infectious diseases.
In the past month, PCVX's shares have nosedived 56%. This downside came after Vaxcyte reported mixed results from a phase II study on its investigational pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in healthy infants.
Adding to this headwind, the broader biotech/drug sector is feeling the pressure from the resignation of a senior FDA official instrumental in driving biotech innovation, which has raised alarms around the agency’s ability to maintain momentum on innovation and regulatory clarity.
PCVX Stock’s Performance
Vaxcyte’s shares have plummeted more than 62% year to date compared with the industry’s 8% decline, as seen in the chart below. During this timeframe, the stock has also underperformed the broader Medical sector and the S&P 500 Index. The company’s shares are also trading below its 50 and 200-day moving averages.

More on PCVX’s Pneumococcal Vaccine Study Results
Last week, Vaxcyte reported top-line results from the mid-stage study that evaluated its 24-valent PCV VAX-24 against Pfizer’s PFE Prevnar 20. The Pfizer vaccine is approved for preventing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) caused by 20 serotypes, all of which are included in the Vaxcyte vaccine, along with four additional ones.
Data from this dose-finding study showed that the mid-dose of VAX-24 met the non-inferiority criteria for seroconversion and showed robust immune responses across all serotypes, particularly for the highest circulating ones. However, the vaccine did not meet the non-inferiority criteria for four of the 24 serotypes compared with Pfizer’s Prevnar 20. This mixed result was a major reason behind the decline in PCVX's share price.
Additionally, VAX-24 was well-tolerated and demonstrated a safety and tolerability profile similar to Pfizer’s Prevnar 20. The mid-dose of VAX-24 also met the target IgG Geometric Mean Ratio and generated strong opsonophagocytic assay responses, which are considered key markers for protection against IPD.
Based on these results, Vaxcyte has selected the mid-dose formulation of VAX-24 for potential advancement into late-stage development. Depending on the top-line results from the ongoing mid-stage study on its investigational 31-valent PCV vaccine VAX-31 in infants, expected in mid-2026, the company plans to start a phase III study in infants with either VAX-24 or VAX-31.
Vaxcyte intends to report full post-dose 4 booster data for VAX-24 by the end of this year.

Vaxcyte Stock Plummets 56% in a Month: Here's the Reason

Shares of popular vaccine and gene therapy makers took a beating on Monday following the resignation of a key FDA official, Dr. Peter Marks.
Why Did Peter Marks Quit?
In his resignation letter posted by the New York Times, Marks called out the newly appointed Health and Human Services (“HHS”) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — a well-known vaccine skeptic — for promoting ‘misinformation and lies’ about the safety of FDA-approved vaccines.
Marks expressed strong concerns about efforts to undermine vaccine safety. He warned about the rising hesitancy toward vaccines and their consequences, citing the recent measles outbreak as an example of what happens when trust in vaccines is eroded.
Per some third-party reports, Marks’ decision came after he was given a choice to either resign or face termination.
Stocks That Fell Following the News
Following the above announcement, vaccine makers were significantly affected by the news. Shares of Moderna MRNA were down about 9% on Monday while those of Novavax NVAX lost over 8%. Moderna and Novavax are among the handful of companies that market a COVID-19 vaccine.
Among vaccine stocks, clinical-stage biotech Vaxcyte PCVX suffered the largest decline, with its shares plummeting nearly 46%. The fall in PCVX shares was further amplified by mixed results from a mid-stage study on its pneumococcal vaccine in infants.
Stocks in the gene therapy space were also negatively impacted. Shares of Sarepta Therapeutics SRPT lost more than 9% while those of CRISPR Therapeutics CRSP declined 8%. Both companies have an FDA-approved gene therapy in their portfolio. Sarepta markets Elevidys for a rare genetic disorder called Duchenne muscular dystrophy, while CRISPR’s Casgevy is approved for sickle cell disease and thalassemia.
Why is the Market Concerned About Marks’ Exit?
Dr. Marks, who headed the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (“CBER”), has been a strong advocate for faster approval of vaccines and gene therapies. During his tenure, he was responsible for approving 22 gene therapies and played a major role in Operation Warp Speed, the initiative that accelerated the development of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The departure of a leading authority like Peter Marks, who has been a driving force behind regulatory efficiency in biotech innovation, has sparked concerns about the future pace of critical drug approvals. As a key figure in overseeing the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines and shaping regulatory pathways for cell and gene therapies, his exit raises questions about the FDA’s ability to maintain its momentum in advancing innovative treatments.
Some Wall Street analysts worry that his absence could weaken the FDA’s role in ensuring timely access to safe and effective therapies, potentially adding to the challenges already facing the biotech sector.

In trading on Monday, the First Trust NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index Fund ETF is outperforming other ETFs, up about 1.9% on the day. Components of that ETF showing particular strength include shares of Corcept Therapeutics, up about 83.2% and shares of Amgen, up about 2% on the day.
And underperforming other ETFs today is the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF, off about 4.4% in Monday afternoon trading. Among components of that ETF with the weakest showing on Monday were shares of Vaxcyte, lower by about 50.5%, and shares of Capricor Therapeutics, lower by about 18.3% on the day.

In trading on Monday, biotechnology shares were relative laggards, down on the day by about 4.9%. Helping drag down the group were shares of Vaxcyte, down about 50.5% and shares of Taysha Gene Therapies off about 27.2% on the day.
Also lagging the market Monday are airlines shares, down on the day by about 3% as a group, led down by Surf Air Mobility, trading lower by about 19.5% and Frontier Group Holdings, trading lower by about 11.3%.

Monday Sector Laggards: Biotechnology, Airlines

Last November, Fundstrat analyst Tom Lee told CNBC that small-cap stocks are headed for a prolonged period of outperformance compared to the large-cap S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). "I think small caps could, in the next couple of years, outperform by more than 100%," Lee said.
The opposite has actually happened since he made that prediction. The Russell 2000, a benchmark for small-cap stocks, has tumbled 16%, while the S&P 500 has declined only 8%. However, the investment thesis Lee outlined late last year remains compelling.

Here's what investors should know.
The bull case for small-cap stocks in the current market environment
The small-cap Russell 2000 achieved a total return of 7% in the last three years, dramatically underperforming the 40% return in the large-cap S&P 500. But Tom Lee thinks that trend could reverse in the years ahead as small-cap stocks benefit from lower interest rates and more attractive valuations.
The Federal Reserve began lowering its benchmark interest rate in September. That should asymmetrically benefit small-cap companies because they have more floating-rate debt. Indeed, the Russell 2000 returned an average of 45% during the 12-month period following the last five rate-cut cycles, while the S&P 500 returned an average 33%, according to Goldman Sachs.
The Russell 2000 trades at 16 times earnings, and earnings are forecast to grow at 11.5% annually in the next few years, according to Morningstar. Those figures give a price/earnings-to-growth ratio (PEG) of 1.4. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 trades at 22 times earnings, and earnings are forecast to grow at 9.4% annually in the next few years. Those numbers give a less attractive PEG of 2.3.
Lastly, Russell 2000 companies derive one-fifth of sales from outside the U.S., while S&P 500 companies derive one-half of sales from outside the U.S. Because small-cap companies are less dependent on international revenue, they are less sensitive to retaliatory tariffs that may be levied on U.S. exports. It also means they are less sensitive to a stronger U.S. dollar, which may be a consequence of the U.S. imposing tariffs on imported goods.
The Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF provides exposure to small-cap stocks
The Russell 2000 tracks about 2,000 small-cap companies that cover about 5% of U.S. stocks by market value.
The index includes companies from all 11 market sectors, but it leans most heavily toward the industrial (19%), financial (19%), and healthcare (17%) sectors. Comparatively, the S&P 500 is weighted heavily toward the information technology (31%), financial (14%), and consumer discretionary (11%) sectors.
The Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF (NASDAQ: VTWO) provides investors with exposure to the Russell 2000. The five largest holdings in the index fund are listed by weight below:

The Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF has an expense ratio of 0.07%, which means shareholders will pay $0.70 annually on every $1,000 invested in the fund. The expense ratio on similar funds is 0.98%, according to Vanguard.
Here's the bottom line: Recent interest rate cuts, relatively cheap valuations, and the trade war initiated by the Trump administration could lead to small-cap outperformance in the years ahead. The Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF is a sensible way for investors to position their portfolios for that possible outcome.
However, investors should bear in mind that large-cap stocks have crushed small-cap stocks in recent history. So, I would personally keep my position in the Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF relatively small. And I certainly would not abandon any high-conviction large-cap stocks, nor would I abandon my S&P 500 index fund.
