Occidental Petroleum Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the acquisition, exploration, and development of oil and gas properties in the United States, the Middle East, and North Africa. It operates through three segments: Oil and Gas, Chemical, and Midstream and Marketing. The company's Oil and Gas segment explores for, develops, and produces oil and condensate, natural gas liquids (NGLs), and natural gas. Its Chemical segment manufactures and markets basic chemicals, including chlorine, caustic soda, chlorinated organics, potassium chemicals, ethylene dichloride, chlorinated isocyanurates, sodium silicates, and calcium chloride; and vinyls comprising vinyl chloride monomer, polyvinyl chloride, and ethylene. The Midstream and Marketing segment gathers, processes, transports, stores, purchases, and markets oil, condensate, NGLs, natural gas, carbon dioxide, and power. This segment also invests in entities. Occidental Petroleum Corporation was founded in 1920 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

The markets are discounting a zero percent chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.

T-notes are seeing weakness today as the 10-year inflation expectations rate is up +0.1 bp at 2.306%, despite today’s drop in oil prices. The T-note market remains worried about inflation pressures, which are likely to remain sticky even after the Strait of Hormuz reopens. The T-note market has some carry-over weakness from Thursday, when demand was lackluster for the Treasury’s 30-year bond auction.
European government bond yields are trading lower. The 10-year German bund yield is down -3.3 bp at 2.999%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -6.6 bp at 4.839%.
On Thursday, the ECB, as expected, raised the deposit facility rate by +25 bp to 2.25% from 2.00% and said, "The outlook remains uncertain, with upside risks for inflation and downside risks for economic growth." Swaps are discounting a 37% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on July 23.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SPCX), doing business as SpaceX, started trading today near $160 per share, up nearly +20% from Thursday’s IPO of $135. Stocks See Support from Hopes for a Near-term US-Iran Peace Agreement

National Fuel Gas Company NFG announced that its board of directors has approved a 4% hike in the quarterly dividend payment, lifting the payout to 55.5 cents per share. The dividend is payable on July 15, 2026, and will be distributed to shareholders of record as of June 30, 2026.
The company’s new annualized dividend is $2.22 per share compared with the previous annual dividend of $2.14. Its current dividend yield is 2.79%, higher than the Zacks S&P 500 composite's average of 1.44%.
The company has paid dividends for 124 consecutive years and has increased its annual dividend for 56 straight years. NFG’s long history of dividend distribution reflects its strong operational performance and resilient cash-flow generation.
NFG's Dividend Sustainability Outlook
Although dividend payments are never guaranteed from one quarter to the next, a company’s strategic efforts to improve earnings and operational performance can help assess the sustainability of its dividend policy.
National Fuel Gas benefits from rising natural gas demand driven by data center growth, extensive shale assets, enhanced well designs, strategic acquisitions and disciplined capital investments that support long-term production, earnings and dividend growth.
NFG in October 2025 announced that it has agreed to acquire CenterPoint’s Ohio natural gas utility business for $2.62 billion, expected to close in the fourth quarter of calendar 2026. The transaction is expected to enhance long-term regulated adjusted EPS growth of 5-7% and strengthen dividend prospects by increasing regulated earnings.
The company generated nearly $160 million in free cash flow in the second quarter of fiscal 2026. NFG plans to increase free cash flow through strategic investments and operational improvements in its production and gathering businesses, supporting future dividend increases and stronger shareholder returns.
The company plans capital investment of $0.96-$1.07 billion in fiscal 2026. Its systematic capital spending to strengthen its natural gas and oil operations is positively impacting total production.
Consistent Dividend-Paying History
NFG is not the only company with a long history of dividend distribution. Chevron Corporation CVX, Exxon Mobil XOM and Occidental Petroleum OXY are the other players from the same sector that have a long history of dividend payment.

Exxon Mobil’s dividends per share have grown at an average annual rate of 5.8% over the last 43 years. The company’s board has approved a quarterly dividend of $1.03 per share, resulting in an annualized dividend of $4.12.
XOM's dividend yield is 2.81%. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Exxon Mobil's 2026 earnings is pegged at $11.80 per share, suggesting year-over-year growth of 66.81%.
Occidental Petroleum also has a long history of paying dividends. On Feb. 18, 2026, the board approved an 8% increase in the quarterly dividend to 26 cents per share, raising the annualized payout to $1.04 per share.
OXY's dividend yield is 1.87%. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Occidental Petroleum's 2026 earnings is pegged at $5.79 per share, suggesting year-over-year growth of 161.99%.

Stocks See Downward Pressure Despite Hopes for a Near-term US-Iran Agreement

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Thursday closed up +1.75%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +1.86%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +3.29%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) rose +1.73%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) rose +3.26%.
Stock indexes settled sharply higher on Thursday, after geopolitical risks eased when President Trump canceled planned strikes on Iran and signaled that a peace deal to end the war was imminent. Chipmakers and other AI-related stocks rallied on Thursday, leading the broader market higher. Also, Thursday’s -2% plunge in WTI crude oil sparked a rally in airline stocks and cruise line operators. However, software stocks retreated on Thursday, led by an -8% slump in Oracle after it reported higher-than-expected capital expenses, driven by increased data spending.

Stocks raced to their highs Thursday afternoon when President Trump said he canceled planned military strikes against Iran, citing "discussions" with Iranian leadership. He added that a "time and place of the signing" of a negotiated end to the war would "be announced shortly," and the US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz "will remain in full force and effect until this transaction is finalized."
Stocks were initially weighed down on Thursday amid concerns about the escalation of Middle East hostilities after President Trump said the US will be hitting Iran very hard tonight and will "at some point" take control of Kharg Island, Iran's key export hub, thus taking control of Iran's oil and gas markets.
Stocks were also pressured by Thursday’s US economic reports, which showed that weekly US jobless claims unexpectedly rose to a 4-month high and that May producer prices were mixed.
Late Wednesday, President Trump said the US will continue bombing Iran if it refuses to agree to an interim peace deal. Mr. Trump ordered multiple strikes on Iranian targets on Wednesday, and Iran retaliated by firing on US bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. The increase in tensions risks derailing peace talks between Iran and the US, thus keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed, and further tightening global energy supplies.
US weekly initial unemployment claims unexpectedly rose +4,000 to a 4-month high of 229,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of a decline to 220,000.
US May PPI final demand rose +1.1% m/m and +6.5% y/y, stronger than expectations of +0.7% m/m and +6.4% y/y, with the +6.5% y/y gain being the largest year-on-year increase in 3.5 years. However, May PI ex food and energy rose +0.4% m/m and +4.9% y/y, weaker than expectations of +0.5% m/m and +5.4% y/y.
WTI crude oil prices (CLN26) are extremely volatile, whipsawing higher and lower several times on Thursday. Crude prices today initially gave up an overnight advance of more than +2% and fell more than -2% after President Trump said he canceled planned strikes on Iran and that a peace deal to end the war was imminent. Crude prices initially rallied more than +2% on Thursday when President Trump said the US would keep attacking Iran and threatened to seize the Kharg Island oil terminal, Iran’s main crude exporting hub.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Thursday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.78%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.16%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average recovered from a 2.5-week low and closed up +0.06%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Thursday closed up +17 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield fell -9.3 bp to 4.459%. T-notes rallied on Thursday after US weekly jobless claims unexpectedly rose to a 4-month high and May producer prices ex-food and energy rose less than expected, dovish factors for Fed policy. T-notes also garnered support on Thursday from the -2% fall in WTI crude oil prices, which lowered inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 2.5-month low of 2.303% on Thursday.
Gains in T-notes were limited after stocks rallied sharply, which curbed safe-haven demand for government debt securities. Also, slack demand for the Treasury’s $22 billion auction of 30-year T-bonds was negative for T-notes, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.33, below the 10-auction average of 2.39.
European government bond yields moved lower on Thursday. The 10-year German Bund yield fell from a 2.5-week high of 3.091% and finished down -4.5 bp to 3.032%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -2.6 bp to 4.905%.
The ECB, as expected, raised the deposit facility rate by +25 bp to 2.25% from 2.00% and said, "The outlook remains uncertain, with upside risks for inflation and downside risks for economic growth."
The ECB cut its 2026 Eurozone GDP estimate to +0.8% from a previous estimate of +0.9% and raised its 2026 Eurozone inflation ex-food and energy forecast to +2.5% from a previous forecast of +2.3%.
Swaps are discounting a 62% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on July 23.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks rallied sharply on Thursday amid signs that AI spending is continuing after Oracle reported quarterly capital expenditures that were higher than expected, driven by increased data center spending. Sandisk (SNDK) closed up more than +14% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed up more than +13%. Also, Lam Research (LRCX) closed up more than +12%, and Applied Materials (AMAT), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +11%. In addition, Intel (INTC) and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed up more than +9%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +7%. Finally, Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed up more than +6%, and Microchip Technology (MCHP) and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed up more than +5%.
Airline stocks and cruise line operators moved sharply higher on Thursday after WTI crude oil fell more than -2%, lowering fuel costs and boosting the companies’ profitability prospects. Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed up more than +11%, and United Airlines Holdings (UAL) and American Airlines Group (AAL) closed up more than +9%. Also, Carnival (CCL) closed up more than +8%, and Southwest Airlines (LUV) and Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) closed up more than +7%. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) closed up more than +6%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks moved higher on Thursday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) rose more than +3%. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed up more than +10%, and Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed up more than +8%. Also, MARA Holdings (MARA) closed up more than +7%, Coinbase Global (COIN) closed up more than +4%, and Strategy (MSTR) closed up more than +3%.
Software stocks are under pressure today, limiting gains in the overall market, with Oracle (ORCL) down more than -8% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting full-year capital spending of $70 billion, $20-25 billion higher than expected due to prepayment for some components. Also, Autodesk (ADSK) closed down more than -7% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Adobe Systems (ADBE) closed down more than -6%. In addition, Workday (WDAY) closed down more than -5%, and Salesforce (CRM) closed down more than -2% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Finally, ServiceNow (NOW), Atlassian Corp (TEAM), and Intuit (INTU) closed down more than -2%, and Microsoft (MSFT) closed down more than -1%.
Energy stocks and service providers slumped on Thursday after WTI crude oil fell more than -2%. Devon Energy (DVN) closed down more than -4%, and ConocoPhillips (COP) and APA Corp (APA) closed down more than -3%. Also, Chevron (CVX), Diamondback Energy (FANG), Exxon Mobil (XOM), and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) closed down more than -2%.
Voyager Technologies (VOYG) closed up more than +16% after BTIG initiated coverage on the stock with a buy recommendation and a price target of $55.
Navan (NAVN) closed up more than +9% after raising its full-year revenue forecast to $907 million-$913 million from a previous estimate of $866 million-$874 million, well above the consensus of $871.7 million.
Eaton Corp Plc (ETN) closed up more than +5% after agreeing to merge its mobility business with Dana Inc in a deal valuing the combined company at roughly $10 billion, including debt.
Allegion Plc (ALLE) closed up more than +3% after Longbow Research upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $165.

Stocks Settle Sharply Higher on Middle East Peace Hopes

While oil prices could fall when the Strait of Hormuz reopens, Shell's CEP believes that rising demand should push them higher over the next five to 10 years.

Oil prices have surged this year amid the conflict with Iran. Brent oil, the global benchmark price, has risen more than 50%, jumping from around $60 a barrel to more than $90. On a positive note, Brent is currently well below its peak of nearly $120 a barrel, reached in the early days of the war. Crude has cooled off amid hopes that the U.S. and Iran will reach a peace deal that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Many people outside the oil industry believe oil prices will decline rapidly once the Strait reopens and remain low in the coming years. However, the CEO of global oil giant Shell (NYSE:SHEL) has a different view. He expects oil prices to continue rising long after the war ends. Here’s why and what that means for oil stocks.

Upside pressure over the longer term
Shell’s CEO, Wael Sawan, believes oil and gas prices will keep rising well after the current Middle East conflict ends. That’s largely due to the expectation that global oil demand will continue to grow. As a result, oil companies will need to continue developing new supplies to offset production declines and depletions in legacy oil fields.
That poses a problem. Sawan told attendees at the Wall Street Journal Leadership Institute CEO Summit that while the oil industry can currently meet global demand (once the Strait reopens), it will be more challenging going forward. That’s because “all the easy oil and gas has been found.” As a result, oil companies will need to pursue resources that are currently uneconomic to explore and develop. Prices will need to rise to make it profitable to tap into the resources the economy will need in the future. That drives his view that “prices are going to move up, [which is] the story of five to 10 years [ahead].”
The importance of exploration
Shell is already investing money to help support future demand growth. The company aims to add 1 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day to its output by 2030 through the commissioning of new projects. Additionally, it’s looking at future opportunities to expand its output. For example, the company acquired acreage in Angola and South Africa to explore for new resources. It’s also evaluating opportunities in Kuwait and Venezuela. These investments will enable Shell to meet future global supply needs and capitalize on rising prices.
Most other major oil companies are also investing to find and develop future supply. For example, last August, ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) acquired a large block offshore Trinidad and Tobago (UD1). It’s next to the company’s Stabroek block in Guyana, where it made 30 discoveries totaling 11 billion BOE. ExxonMobil recently sold a 10% interest in UD1 to Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY), which will now help fund its portion of the exploration and development costs. Exxon initially plans to invest $42 million in seismic testing and exploration wells, which could pave the way for nearly $22 billion in future investment to develop the field. UD1 could be a major growth driver for these oil companies, enabling them to capitalize on rising demand and prices.
Meanwhile, Occidental, along with partners Chevron and Woodside Energy, recently made an oil discovery at their Bandit prospect in the Gulf of Mexico (also known as the Gulf of America in the U.S.). Bandit is near another Occidental-operated facility, which it could tie into in support of its future development. Occidental also signed a 15-year extension of an agreement in Oman last year to tap a potential resource of more than 800 million barrels. These moves will further enhance Occidental’s ability to capitalize on the growth ahead in the oil industry.
Oil could be much higher in the future
Oil prices could fall in the near term once the Strait of Hormuz reopens. However, Shell’s CEO sees them rising over the longer term, due to growing demand. That bodes well for oil companies actively exploring for new resources, as it will give them the fuel to grow production and capitalize on higher future prices. This outlook makes oil stocks look like a compelling long-term investment.

Shell’s CEO Warns That Oil Prices Will Continue Rising Long After the War Ends. Here’s What That Means for Oil Stocks.

Brent crude oil hit a multi-year high of $119.50 per barrel in March, following the initial outbreak of the Iran war. The conflict disrupted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for roughly a quarter of the world's maritime oil trade, and boosted many oil stocks.
But as of this writing, Brent crude trades at about $87 per barrel. The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, but intermittent peace talks, ceasefires, and discussions to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz have all brought oil back down from its recent peak.

That pullback hurt upstream companies like Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY), which benefit the most from soaring oil prices. However, it's still a great time to invest in midstream companies, which operate pipelines and other infrastructure to transport oil, as well as in the world's largest integrated energy giants. These three oil stocks fit that description: Energy Transfer (NYSE: ET), Enbridge (NYSE: ENB), and Chevron (NYSE: CVX).
Why are Energy Transfer and Enbridge still good investments?
Energy Transfer operates more than 140,000 miles of pipeline across 44 states. Enbridge operates 70,000 miles of pipelines and smaller feeder lines across North America.
Energy Transfer, based in Texas, transports more natural gas than crude oil through its pipes. Enbridge, based in Canada, transports more crude oil than natural gas. Energy Transfer's infrastructure is concentrated in the southern U.S., while Enbridge's pipelines connect Canada to the eastern seaboard, the Midwest, and the Gulf Coast regions in the U.S.
Both of these companies are well insulated from volatile prices because they charge upstream and downstream companies "tolls" to use their infrastructure. As long as those resources flow through their pipes, they can generate plenty of cash to fund their distributions and dividends.
Energy Transfer, which operates as a master limited partnership (MLP), blends its income with a return of capital to pay a high forward distribution yield of 7%. Enbridge, which operates as a standard Canadian corporation, pays a forward dividend yield of 5.1%.
Both stocks are also still reasonably valued because they didn't rally as much as other oil stocks in response to the Iran war. Energy Transfer trades at just 11 times its forward earnings per unit (EPU), while Enbridge trades at 26 times forward earnings. Therefore, these two pipeline stocks are great ways to profit from the oil market without too much exposure to choppy oil prices.
Why is Chevron worth buying?
Chevron, one of the world's largest integrated energy companies, operates upstream, midstream, and downstream businesses. It has a presence in 180 countries, but it gets most of its oil from the U.S., Kazakhstan, and Australia rather than from the Middle East.
Chevron's scale and diversification make it an evergreen stock to hold even if oil prices collapse. While declining crude oil prices will hurt its upstream business, they could help its downstream business by reducing its input costs. Its midstream business should also continue to grow regardless of near-term swings in the oil market.
That's why Chevron has raised its dividend annually for 39 consecutive years. If it maintains that streak for 50 years, it will become a Dividend King. It currently pays a forward yield of 3.8%.
Chevron expects to increase its oil and gas production by 2%-3% annually through 2030. That growth will be fueled by the expansion of its Tengiz Field in Kazakhstan, upgrades for its biggest oil field in the Permian Basin, new projects in Guyana (one of the world's fastest-growing oil regions), deepwater projects across the Gulf of Mexico, and natural gas projects in Australia. In other words, it still has plenty of irons in the fire.
From 2025 to 2028, analysts expect Chevron's EPS to grow at a 24% CAGR. Its stock still looks like a bargain at 12 times this year's earnings, and it's a stock I'd be comfortable holding for the long term, regardless of what happens to oil prices this year.

The high crude prices, although favorable for upstream operations, have been severely hurting the integrated energy company's refining operations. The slowdown in production growth of crude oil will probably limit earnings from upstream operations. On top of that, rising demand for renewables will make the outlook of the Zacks Oil & Gas US Integrated industry gloomy.
ConocoPhillips, Occidental and National Fuel Gas Company are the energy companies that could sail through the challenging business scenario.
About the Industry
The Zacks Oil & Gas US Integrated industry comprises companies primarily involved in upstream and midstream energy businesses. The upstream operations involve oil and natural gas exploration and production in the prolific shale plays of the United States. The integrated energy companies are also engaged in midstream businesses through gathering and processing facilities, along with transportation pipeline networks and storage sites.
Overall, the upstream business is positively correlated with oil and gas prices. The produced commodity volumes are transported through midstream assets, generating stable fee-based revenues. The integrated energy players in the United States also have access to downstream operations wherein the transported oil volumes are converted to finished products, comprising gasoline, natural gas liquids and diesel, through refining activities.

High Crude Prices to Hurt Refining: The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude is trading at more than $85 per barrel, according to data from oilprice.com, owing to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Also, in its latest short-term energy outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration mentioned its expectation for the WTI oil price this year at $85.68 per barrel, higher than $65.40 last year. The high crude pricing environment is hurting the refining business of the integrated energy players.
Slowdown in Production Growth: Energy companies in the United States are increasingly focusing on returning capital to shareholders rather than allocating additional funds to production, which aligns with investors' demands. This conservative capital spending is slowing down the integrated companies' oil and gas production growth from their upstream operations.
Increasing Focus on Renewables: The world is gradually shifting to cleaner fuel and renewable energy to combat climate change. Thus, with solar and wind energy gaining prominence, demand for fossil fuels and petroleum products is likely to decline gradually, although the timeline is uncertain. The trend is not favorable for integrated players' upstream and downstream operations.

For creating long-term value for shareholders, Occidental has a strong focus on redirecting capital toward higher-return oil and gas projects.
ConocoPhillips
With operations in resources with low breakeven costs, ConocoPhillips is likely to capitalize on the high crude pricing environment. COP has operations in the Lower 48, which comprise the Permian, the most prolific basin in the United States. Other low-cost shale plays in the Lower 48 include Bakken and Eagle Ford. Thus, it is expected that upstream operations will now be highly profitable for COP, which carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
National Fuel Gas
National Fuel Gas is well-poised to navigate a volatile energy business environment, owing to its integrated business model encompassing upstream, midstream, and downstream activities. Zacks Industry Outlook Highlights ConocoPhillips, Occidental and National Fuel Gas Company

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed down -0.26%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.17%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -1.12%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) fell -0.36%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) fell -1.15%.
Stock indexes gave up an early advance on Tuesday and retreated, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 falling to 5-week lows. Chipmakers gave up an early advance on Tuesday and sold off sharply as investors rotated out of the sector, weighing on the broader market. Also, weakness in software stocks dragged on the overall market, and energy producers slid amid Tuesday’s -3% plunge in WTI crude oil prices (CLN26) to a 7-week low.

However, home builders and suppliers rallied on Tuesday after US Apr existing home sales rose to a 5-month high. Also, airline stocks and cruise line operators moved higher as the slump in crude prices on Tuesday lowered fuel costs and boosted the companies’ profitability prospects.
Tuesday’s US economic news was supportive for stocks, as the Apr trade deficit eased to -$55.9 billion from -$56.6 billion in Mar, narrower than the -$56.1 billion expected. Also, May existing home sales rose +3.2% m/m to a 5-month high of 4.17 million, stronger than expectations of 4.07 million.
Crude oil prices sank on Tuesday to a 7-week low after Iran and Israel agreed to end hostilities toward each other. President Trump on Tuesday predicted a swift end to war with Iran and a subsequent fall in oil prices and said, “We’re in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal, and that they could have at least an idea one or two days from now” about the deal. However, crude price bounced off its low and stocks added to their losses Tuesday afternoon when President Trump blamed Iran for shooting down a US military helicopter and said the US would respond, reigniting fears that the US-Iran peace plan is in peril and the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed, further tightening global oil supplies.
China trade news was better than expected, a positive factor for global economic growth. May exports rose +19.4% y/y, stronger than expectations of +15.0% y/y. Also, May imports rose +27.4% y/y, stronger than expectations of +26.0% y/y.
The markets are discounting a 3% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell from a 1.5-week high and closed down -0.21%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.28%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average closed up +2.17%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Tuesday closed up +6 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield fell -3.6 bp to 4.526%. Sep T-note prices rose on Tuesday amid a -3% plunge in WTI crude oil prices, which eased inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 2-month low of 2.337% on Tuesday. Also, Tuesday’s stock sell-off boosted safe-haven demand for T-notes.
Tuesday’s stronger-than-expected US May existing home sales report limited gains in T-notes. Also, so-so demand for the Treasury’s $58 billion auction of 3-year T-notes was negative for T-notes, as the bid-to-cover ratio was 2.64, below the 10-auction average of 2.65.
European government bond yields moved lower on Tuesday. The 10-year German Bund yield fell -1.8 bp to 3.043%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -3.0 bp to 4.903%.
German Apr industrial production rose +0.4% m/m, right on expectations and the biggest increase in five months.
German trade news was better than expected as Apr exports unexpectedly rose +0.9% m/m, stronger than expectations of a-0.5% m/m decline. Also, Apr imports unexpectedly rose +1.2% m/m versus expectations of a -2.0% m/m decline.
Swaps are discounting a 100% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers gave up an early advance today and turned lower, weighing on the broader market. Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed down more than -10% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Qualcomm (QCOM) and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -7%. Also, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Micron Technology (MU) closed down more than -4%, andIntel (INTC) closed down more than -3%. In addition, NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) closed down more than -2%, and Broadcom (AVGO) and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed down more than -1%.
Software stocks retreated on Tuesday, weighing on the overall market. ServiceNow (NOW) closed down more than -6%, and Salesforce (CRM) closed down more than -4% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Also, Intuit (INTU), Oracle (ORCL), and Palantir Technologies (PLTR) closed down more than -3%, and Workday (WDAY), Atlassian Corp (TEAM), and Adobe Systems (ADBE) closed down more than -2%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) and Datadog (DDOG) closed down more than -1%.
Energy producers and service providers slid on Tuesday as WTI crude oil fell more than -3% to a 7-week low. APA Corp (APA), Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Phillips 66 (PSX), Devon Energy (DVN), Halliburton (HAL), and Diamondback Energy (FANG) closed down more than -2%. Also, Baker Hughes (BKR), Chevron (CVX), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Valero Energy (VLO), ConocoPhillips (COP), Occidental Petroleum (OXY), and SLB Ltd (SLB) closed down more than -1%.
Airline stocks and cruise line operators rallied on Tuesday as WTI crude oil fell more than 3% to a 7-week low, lowering the companies’ fuel costs and boosting profitability prospects. Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed up more than +6%, and Southwest Airlines (LUV) closed up more than +5%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL) closed up more than +4%, and American Airlines Group (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL), and Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Carnival (CCL) and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) closed up more than +2%.
Homebuilders and building suppliers moved higher on Tuesday after US May existing home sales rose more than expected to a 5-month high. Builders Firstsource (BLDR) closed up more than +6%, and Toll Brothers (TOL) closed up more than +5%. Also, DR Horton (DHI) and Pulte Group (PHM) closed up more than +4%, and Home Depot (HD) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. In addition, KB Home (KBH) closed up more than +3%, and Lennar (LEN) closed up more than +1%.
SailPoint (SAIL) closed down more than -11% after forecasting Q2 adjusted EPS of 7 cents to 8 cents, the midpoint below the consensus of 7.9 cents.
United Natural Foods (UNFI) closed down more than -10% after reporting Q3 net sales of $7.72 billion, weaker than the consensus of $7.80 billion, and forecasting full-year net sales of $31.10 billion to $31.30 billion, below the consensus of $31.32 billion.
Vail Resorts (MTN) closed down more than -4% after reporting Q3 EPS of $8.81, weaker than the consensus of $9.00.
Novanta (NOVT) closed down more than -2% after agreeing to acquire Riverpoint Medical from Arlington Capital for $1.2 billion in cash.
Nuvalent (NUVL) closed up more than +39% after GSK Plc agreed to buy the company for $10.6 billion, or about $124 a share.
J M Smucker (SJM) closed up more than +10% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of $2.77, better than the consensus of $2.64, and forecasting 2027 adjusted EPS of $9.75 to $10.25, the midpoint above the consensus of $9.78.
West Pharmaceutical Services (WST) closed up more than +4% after Barclays upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight with a price target of $400.
Applied Digital (APLD) closed up more than +2% after signing a 15-year take-or-pay lease with a US-based artificial intelligence hyperscaler for 210 megawatts of IT load at its Delta Forge 2 campus.
