LYB’s Segment Highlights
In the Olefins & Polyolefins — Americas division, revenues decreased roughly 13.6% year over year to $2,481 million in the first quarter. The figure missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2,737.8 million. EBITDA fell by $270 million from the first quarter of 2024. The decline in Olefins results was about $120 million, mainly due to reduced ethylene margins caused by higher energy costs and lower prices for co-products.
The Olefins & Polyolefins — Europe, Asia, the international segment recorded revenues of $2,600 million, down 5.3% from the prior-year quarter. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2,550.8 million. Olefins results declined by around $20 million year over year, primarily due to reduced margins from increased feedstock costs. This was partially offset by higher ethylene prices, while lower volumes from unplanned downtime adversely impacted results.
The Advanced Polymer Solutions segment posted revenues of $908 million, down 5.9% from $965 million in the prior-year quarter. The figure lagged the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $948.4 million. EBITDA rose by $11 million year over year, mainly due to improved sales margins and better cost efficiency.
Revenues in the Intermediates and Derivatives segment decreased around 11.1% on a year-over-year basis to $2,298 million. The figure missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2,472.9 million. Propylene Oxide & Derivatives results fell by about $25 million from the previous period, primarily due to reduced margins on raw materials and derivatives.
The Technology segment’s revenues were $120 million in the reported quarter, down around 37.5% year over year. The figure lagged the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $175.4 million. EBITDA fell by $66 million from the first quarter of 2024. This decline was due to reduced licensing revenues from fewer contracts, along with lower catalyst margins and volumes driven by weaker market sentiment.

In the first quarter, the company used $579 million in cash from operating activities and surpassed its long-term cash conversion target over the past year. It maintained a balanced capital allocation strategy, investing $483 million in capital expenditures and returning $543 million to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks.
LYB’s Outlook
For the second quarter, the company anticipates improved seasonal demand across most of its business segments. U.S. natural gas and ethane feedstock prices have eased, while lower crude oil costs are benefiting operations in Europe and Asia. Oxyfuels margins are expected to rise as gasoline crack spreads widen during the summer driving season. In Europe, ongoing rapid capacity reductions are projected to enhance the regional supply-demand balance over time. Furthermore, a more constructive stance on economic and regulatory policies in Europe is contributing to cautious optimism. Despite ongoing economic uncertainty, global demand for packaging is expected to stay firm, supporting essential sectors like food, healthcare and daily consumer goods.
To meet global demand and accommodate planned maintenance, LYB expects second-quarter operating rates of 85% for its North American olefins and polyolefins (O&P) facilities, 75% for European O&P operations and 85% for Intermediates & Derivatives (I&D) assets.

LyondellBasell's Earnings Lag Estimates, Sales Beat in Q1

Investors in Osisko Gold Royalties Ltd (Symbol: OR) saw new options become available this week, for the October 17th expiration. One of the key data points that goes into the price an option buyer is willing to pay, is the time value, so with 238 days until expiration the newly available contracts represent a possible opportunity for sellers of puts or calls to achieve a higher premium than would be available for the contracts with a closer expiration. Factors Likely to Have Shaped IAG’s Q4 Performance
Last month, IAMGOLD provided its fourth-quarter production and sales update, which may show how it is likely to fare in the to-be-reported quarter.
IAG’s attributable gold production was 177,000 ounces compared with 136,000 ounces in the fourth quarter of 2023. This growth was driven by the contribution from the Côté Gold mine, which started production in 2024, along with improved performances at Westwood.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, Côté Gold produced 62,000 attributable ounces (or 96,000 ounces on a 100% basis). IAMGOLD had expected to exit the quarter at 90% throughput. However, the company fell short of the target due to ramp-up-related challenges, which required downtime to implement solutions.
The Westwood mine produced 35,000 ounces of gold compared with 28,000 ounces in the fourth quarter of 2023. The mine continues to benefit from higher head grades due to an increase in the grade and an increased proportion of the ore feed from underground.
Essakane mine’s attributable production was 80,000 ounces in the fourth quarter, lower than 108,000 ounces in the year-ago quarter. Average head grades decreased, in line with the mine plan and guidance. In December, Essakane completed an annual shutdown of the plant for maintenance and replacement of liners.
IAG’s fourth-quarter gold sales were 177,000 ounces on an attributable basis, at an average realized gold price of approximately $2,509 per ounce. This approximates to revenues of $444 million. IAG’s fourth-quarter 2023 revenues were $298 million.
However, pricing for certain main consumables, including cyanide and grinding media, is expected to have dented IAMGOLD’s margins. Also, at the Côté Gold Mine, operating and capitalized waste stripping unit costs are anticipated to have been higher until it achieves a throughput rate of 90%.
While these factors are likely to have somewhat dented IAG’s earnings, higher revenues are expected to have offset the impacts.

Factors Likely to Have Shaped CCJ’s Q4 Performance
CCJ has a 69.8% stake in the McArthur River mine and 83% interest in the Key Lake mill, the world's largest high-grade uranium mine and mill. Cameco owns a 54.5% interest in Cigar Lake, which is the world’s highest-grade uranium mine.
Cameco’s expected share from these mines is 23.1 million pounds in 2024 compared with 17.6 million pounds in 2023. During the first nine-month period of 2024, the company’s share of production totaled 17.3 million pounds, implying a fourth-quarter production target of 5.8 million. This is slightly above the production volume of 5.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2023.
CCJ had stated plans to sell 32-34 million pounds of uranium in 2024. Having sold 20.8 million pounds in the first nine-month period of 2024, Cameco had to sell 11.2-13.2 million pounds of uranium in the fourth quarter of 2024 to meet the target. This indicates a rise from the 9.8 million pounds sold in the fourth quarter of 2023. Its uranium revenues are expected to have benefited from higher sales volume, offset by lower uranium prices. Notably, uranium spot prices averaged around $76.75 per pound for the fourth quarter, 7% lower year over year.
Cameco also owns a 40% stake in the Inkai mine, which has been facing procurement and supply-chain issues, mainly related to sulfuric acid deliveries. Transportation challenges, construction delays and inflationary production costs are other headwinds. Cameco had lowered the production outlook for Inkai by 0.6 million to 7.7 million pounds (on a 100% basis) of uranium.
At Port Hope, annual UF6 (uranium hexafluoride) production was projected between 11,000 and 11,500 tons in 2024. This is lower than the previous expectation of 12,000 tons due to temporary operational issues in the first half of 2024.
Fuel services (which include UF6 conversion, UO2 and heavy water reactor fuel bundles) production for 2024 is expected to be in the band of 13.5-14.5 million kgU, indicating a rise from 13.3 million kgU reported in 2023. Sales deliveries are expected to reach 12-13 million kgU in 2024, whereas the metric was 12 million kgU in 2023. This implies fourth-quarter production at 3.6-4.6 million kgU and sales at 4.1-5.1 million kgU. In the fourth quarter of 2023, production was 3.7 million kgU and sales volumes were 4.2 million kgU.
These anticipated improvements in production and sales for fuel services are likely to have positively influenced CCJ’s fourth-quarter performance.
Meanwhile, the average unit cost of production at McArthur River/Key Lake is expected to have been higher in the quarter due to the production ramp-up. The average unit cost of sales in the fuel services segment is likely to have been elevated than the prior-year quarter’s actual due to the lower production expectations at the Port Hope conversion facility. CCJ will continue to incur care and maintenance costs for the ongoing curtailment of its tier-two assets, which are expected between $50 million and $60 million.
Cameco has been progressing to lower administration, exploration and operating costs as well as capital expenditure. This is likely to have helped offset the impacts of elevated costs on CCJ’s earnings.
In November 2023, CCJ acquired a 49% interest in Westinghouse Electric Company. Due to normal variability in the timing of its customer requirements, and delivery and outage schedules, the Westinghouse segment is expected to have delivered a stronger performance in the fourth quarter of 2024. CCJ’s share of adjusted EBITDA from Westinghouse is expected between $460 million and $530 million in 2024. Of this, $227 million of EBITDA was realized in the first nine months of 2024 and $140-$210 million remains to be realized in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Cameco Gears Up to Report Q4 Earnings: What's in Store?

Osisko Gold Royalties Ltd OR announced an amendment to its silver stream by increasing its attributable silver percentage by 12.5% to 100% with respect to the Gibraltar copper mine. Osisko also announced that it has closed the previously announced acquisition of 1.8% gross revenue royalty on the Dalgaranga Gold project for $44 million.
The mine is operated by a wholly-owned subsidiary of Taseko Mines Limited. Osisko and Taseko have also extended the step-down silver delivery threshold to 6,811,603 ounces delivered. In exchange for these amendments, Osisko has paid an additional deposit amount of $12.7 million to Taseko.
In addition to the 1.8% gross revenue royalty, OR has also closed the acquisition of a 1.35% gross revenue royalty on additional regional exploration licenses in proximity to Dalgaranga for $6 million.
Osisko’s shareholders will benefit from the increased silver stream transaction that is consistent with its strategy of adding cash flow from long-life assets in Tier 1 mining jurisdictions.
In the case of Dalgaranga, since the agreement to acquire the Dalgaranga Royalty was announced on Sept. 30, 2024, its operator, Spartan, has continued to deliver on key milestones.
