Pharmaceutical giants Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) and Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) are still the two titans of the weight loss drug market, to be sure. Lilly sold $13.5 billion worth of GLP-1-based Zepbound last year, while Novo reported revenue of more than $30 billion (U.S.) from its anti-obesity drugs Wegovy and Ozempic, with its weight loss arm experiencing year-over-year sales growth of more than 26%.
As is so often the case, though, would-be competitors aren't simply letting market leaders have unfettered access to a market that Morgan Stanley now believes will grow to a stunning $150 billion per year by 2035.

Drugmaker Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) is throwing its hat into the ring as well, recently offering a developmental update that should concern Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, and the shareholders of this weight-loss drug duopoly. Let's see what this could mean for all three companies.
Less is more
It's called berobenatide. In many ways, it's like the aforementioned Wegovy and Zepbound, as it leverages the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor pathway to induce weight loss. And it's administered by subcutaneous injection.
There is one big way Pfizer's anti-obesity drug berobenatide -- also known as PF-08653944 -- differs from Wegovy, Ozempic, and Zepbound, though. That is, whereas Lilly's and Novo's treatments are injected weekly, Pfizer's GLP-1 receptor agonist requires only a monthly injection to achieve comparable weight-loss results.
That's what the developmental update, unveiled recently at the 86th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association, suggests, anyway. As the company's corresponding press release explains, the drug's phase 2b trials successfully "highlight the potential for monthly delivery in a patient-friendly presentation with a very low 0.5 mL injection volume that provides convenience and scalability advantages" for patients with or without type 2 diabetes. It's also about as well tolerated as alternatives.
There are some measurable trade-offs, of course. While this particular study showed a typical weight loss of 15.9% at the 32-week mark, patients might do slightly better with Novo Nordisk's or Eli Lilly's GLP-1 options as part of a clinically managed or carefully followed treatment regimen.
However, given that its average weight loss reflects a wide range of inputs that may or may not be affected by deviations from a dosing or diet regimen, some patients could conceivably achieve better personal results. Some observers also argue that berobenatide may produce better net weight loss in the long run simply because it's easier to stick to its corresponding weight-loss plan.
The trial's results also affirm the idea that this drug may be effective at maintaining a lower weight once a user's weight-loss goal has been met.
The rest of the story is even more compelling
It's an obvious win for Pfizer. But even a late-phase 2b win for a single drug in its R&D pipeline isn't exactly game-changing for the company. There's still phase 3 testing to be done, which is not only time-consuming, but puts previous-stage results to the test on a wider scale. Veteran investors know all too well that the FDA can often spot something it doesn't like late in a drug's development that it didn't notice before.
Just understand that this same anti-obesity treatment -- berobenatide -- isn't just in one single mid-stage trial right now. It's currently undergoing a handful of similar trials as a weight-loss drug and a type 2 diabetes treatment, some of which are phase 3 trials -- the final stage before seeking regulatory approval. The market's already familiar with this drug and its safety profile. The recent update of its efficacy as a once-monthly, low-dose injection simply bolsters the overall optimism surrounding this drug, ultimately acquired with Pfizer's 2025 acquisition of drugmaker Metsera.
In a similar vein, Pfizer's update on phase 2b testing of low monthly doses of berobenatide gives the company another chance to tout that it actually has 10 different trials of this drug in or entering phase 3 by the end of this year. Moreover, it's got more than 20 anti-obesity treatments currently in the works at various stages of development.
Connect the dots. Pfizer is positioning to compete with Lilly and Novo. And it will be able to do so, even if only a handful of these trials meet their phase 3 targets.
Much to think about, and far too much to simply ignore
Just keep your expectations in check. Multiple trials means multiple launches of the drug, each with a narrowly range of approved uses. Pfizer's obesity business will only build slowly and won't begin making major contributions to the top and bottom lines for at least a few years.
As CEO Albert Bourla commented in the company's recent Q1earnings conference call "Starting in 2029, we will enter a five-year period of high single-digit revenue CAGR," with much of its growth from that point on being driven by recent acquisitions like Matsera. The three years between now and then, however, are going to remain mostly unimpressive as the company continues to struggle with the sharp wind-down of its once-red-hot COVID-19 drug business.
The market has a funny way of predicting and reflecting those predictions in stock prices -- well in advance, though.
Whatever the case, even what's just moderately bullish for Pfizer is more bearish for Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. Pfizer is introducing competition to the weight-loss drug market, which is already seeing slowing growth. If nothing else, the eventual launch of berobenatide will further erode the already-waning pricing power of Wegovy, Ozempic, and Zepbound. And Pfizer isn't the only outfit working on an alternative anti-obesity drug either.
Given that Lilly and Novo shares have been priced at a premium largely on the potential of their weight-loss drugs, Pfizer's update is an important reminder that nothing lasts forever. Shareholders of either company will most definitely want to keep close tabs on the ongoing development of berobenatide. It's a brewing problem, to be sure.

Pfizer's New Weight-Loss Data Just Gave Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk Investors Something to Worry About

(RTTNews) - Novartis (NVS) unveiled late-breaking Phase 3 RemIND trial data at the EAACI Congress, highlighting the potential of Rhapsido (remibrutinib) as the first targeted therapy for chronic inducible urticaria (CIndU).
The study met its primary endpoints across the three most common CIndU subtypes—symptomatic dermographism, cold urticaria, and cholinergic urticaria—with responses seen as early as week 2 and sustained improvements by week 12.
Chronic inducible urticaria (CIndU) affects an estimated 29 million people worldwide, with everyday triggers such as pressure, heat, or cold leading to itchy wheals. Current antihistamine treatments often provide incomplete relief, and no targeted therapies are approved today.
Rhapsido, a selective oral BTK inhibitor, works by blocking histamine release, a key driver of hives and swelling. In the RemIND trial, complete response rates at week 12 were 29.3% for symptomatic dermographism, 56.3% for cold urticaria, and 29.3% for cholinergic urticaria compared with 14-16% for placebo.
Novartis has submitted a supplemental NDA to the FDA for the symptomatic dermographism subtype and plans additional filings globally in 2026. Rhapsido is already approved for chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) in multiple regions, and the new data reinforce its potential to expand into CIndU, addressing a significant unmet need.
NVO has traded between $35.12 and $81.44 over the past year. The stock closed Thursday's trading at $43.96, up 2.69%. In pre-market the stock is at $43.58, down 0.89%.

Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX) has seen its stock stumble in recent times -- for example, it's slipped over the past year. But over five years, shares of the biotech company have climbed more than 300%. This is amid excitement about the company's potential in a market that's on track to reach nearly $100 billion in just a few years. I'm talking about the weight loss drug market.
Viking hasn't yet commercialized a drug, but it has a promising candidate in late-stage trials, so it may be very close to the finish line in this valuable market. All of this means the biotech, which specializes in developing candidates for metabolic and endocrine disease, might generate revenue -- and at significant levels -- in just a few years.

Though investors haven't rushed into the stock in recent months, this could soon change. Viking has catalysts just ahead: The company expects to report data from a maintenance dosing study of its weight loss drug candidate in the third quarter, and it aims to launch a phase 3 trial for the oral version of its candidate in the fourth quarter.
Considering this, is Viking stock going to $100? Let's find out.
Blockbuster weight loss drugs
We'll start with some details about Viking's lead candidate, VK2735. This is an investigational dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist, much like the popular drugs sold by market leaders Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. These drugs act on hormonal pathways involved in digestion, and as a result, they help control appetite and blood sugar levels. The Lilly and Novo drugs have become blockbusters, and demand has been consistently high for these products -- this is thanks to their efficacy, safety, and ease of use.
Though these pharma giants dominate the space, as mentioned, it is a high-growth market, so there is room for others to enter. And even if a company such as Viking doesn't take leadership -- and I wouldn't expect it to unseat a massive pharma company like Lilly or Novo -- it still could bring in blockbuster revenue. That could be quite a huge step for a young biotech.
And Viking does offer its own twist, differentiating itself from current GLP-1 drugs. At the moment, Lilly offers a dual GLP-1/GIP drug in injectable format and a GLP-1 drug in oral format. Novo's obesity drugs are GLP-1s. (Dual GLP-1/GIP drugs interact with two hormonal pathways, while GLP-1s interact with only one hormonal pathway.)
Injectable and oral formulations
Viking is developing VK2735 in both injectable and oral formats. So, if approved, it would be the first dual GLP-1/GIP drug available in oral format -- and the first dual available in both injectable and oral formats. One big advantage of this is that patients can shift from one formulation to the other -- for example, starting with the oral treatment and then using the injectable for maintenance once they've reached their desired weight.
The phase 3 trial for Viking's injectable is ongoing, and as mentioned, the phase 3 study for the oral formulation is set to begin later this year. We also should see data from its maintenance dosing trial in the months to come. These events could represent catalysts for the stock, which has been known to react to news. When Viking initially announced phase 2 data for VK2735 a couple of years ago, the stock soared more than 100% in one trading session.
So now, let's return to our question: Is Viking heading to $100? It reached a high of more than $94 when it announced phase 2 data in February of 2024. The stock has since given back much of that gain, and it trades today for about $27. But the average Wall Street estimate calls for it to reach more than $92 within the coming 12 months, recovering much of that territory.
The path to $100 represents a jump of more than 200%. I don't see that happening overnight like Viking's massive gain in February of 2024. But a few updates or general good news in the obesity drug market could help it along the way -- so Viking could indeed be heading to $100 in the quarters to come.

Is Viking Therapeutics Stock Going to $100?

In recent years, the pharmaceutical industry has witnessed a remarkable surge in the development of weight loss medications, particularly GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Ozempic and Wegovy. The global obesity rate has nearly tripled since 1975 and is expected to affect over half the population by 2035, per WHO and Goldman Sachs. Theglobal marketfor anti-obesity medications is expected to reach $50 billion by 2030.
As the prevalence of obesity rises, so do related chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, creating a massive market for treatments like GLP-1 drugs. Pioneering GLP-1 treatments, such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound, are now at the forefront of medical advancements in weight management.
Eli Lilly Hovers Around $1 Trillion Valuation
Eli Lilly LLY shares hit a $1 trillion market value, closing at its first record high since November. The stock has surged more than 25% since the March 30 market low and gained over 400% in the past five years, making Eli Lilly one of Wall Street’s biggest beneficiaries of the obesity-drug boom, per Yahoo Finance. Shares surged about 14% over the past one month (as of June 4, 2026).
Reta Fuels Investor Optimism
Much of the recent excitement centers on retatrutide, or “Reta,” Eli Lilly’s experimental next-generation obesity treatment.
Unlike approved drugs such as Zepbound and Mounjaro, which target two hormone pathways, Reta targets three pathways tied to appetite control, blood sugar regulation and energy use.
In the Phase 3 TRIUMPH-1 obesity trial, patients on the highest dose lost an average of 70.3 pounds, or 28.3% of body weight, over 80 weeks. More than 45% of participants lost at least 30% of their body weight, results often associated with bariatric surgery, per the same Yahoo Finance article.
GLP-1 Market Expands Beyond Obesity
Investors increasingly view GLP-1 drugs as a broader metabolic-health platform extending beyond obesity and diabetes into areas such as sleep apnea, kidney disease, cardiovascular risk, liver disease and addiction treatment.
Alongside Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk NVO, Amgen AMGN and Viking Therapeutics VKTX remain key players in the obesity-drug race. Meanwhile, Indian pharma major Lupin bets big on India’s GLP-1 market.
The trend is also affecting industries outside healthcare, including packaged food, alcohol, restaurant and retail stocks, as investors assess how appetite-suppressing drugs may reshape consumer behavior.
Deloitte Warns of a GLP-1 “Bubble”
A new report from Deloitte suggests soaring demand for obesity and diabetes drugs may be creating a “bubble effect” within the pharmaceutical industry, as quoted on CNBC.
Returns on pharmaceutical R&D among the world’s top 20 drugmakers rose to 7% in 2025, driven largely by GLP-1-related assets. Obesity treatments now account for roughly 25% of projected late-stage pipeline sales, surpassing oncology for the first time in 16 years.
According to Deloitte, GLP-1 and obesity drugs now represent about 38% of projected commercial inflows from the 2025 late-stage pipeline. Excluding these drugs, the industry’s R&D return falls sharply to 2.9%.
The report also highlighted concentration risk, noting that only 9% of blockbuster late-stage therapies is expected to generate nearly 70% of total risk-adjusted peak sales.
AI and Health Tech Join the GLP-1 Boom
The obesity-drug trend is also driving growth in health technology. Health-tech startup Signos recently raised $20 million in funding and expanded its partnership with Dexcom, per a CNBC article.
Signos uses AI-powered glucose monitoring technology alongside Dexcom’s continuous glucose monitors to help users manage weight through personalized recommendations tied to food, sleep, stress and lifestyle habits.
ETFs to Play
Roundhill GLP-1 and Weight Loss ETF OZEM, Tema Heart & Health ETF HRTS and Amplify Weight Loss Drug & Treatment ETF THNR are some of the ETFs that should be closely tracked in light of the above-mentioned scenario.
LLY-heavy ETFs like the iShares U.S. Pharmaceuticals ETF IHE, Harbor Health Care ETF MEDI and VanEck Pharmaceutical ETF PPH should also benefit from this trend.
NVO-heavy ETFs such as the Simplify Health Care ETF PINK and PPH are also in focus. Meanwhile, Amgen-heavy ETFs like the VanEck Biotech ETF BBH and iShares Biotechnology ETF IBB should not be overlooked amid this euphoria.

Inside the GLP-1 Boom: ETF Picks for the Obesity Drug Market

Amgen AMGN is one of the several drug makers racing to develop an innovative weight-loss drug and take a share of the booming weight loss drug market. The global obesity drug market is projected to grow dramatically, reaching nearly $95 billion by 2030 and potentially $125 billion by 2035, according to Goldman Sachs estimates.
Amgen is developing MariTide, a GIPR/GLP-1 receptor, as a single dose in a convenient autoinjector device with a monthly and maybe less frequent dosing. This key feature differentiates it from Eli Lilly’s LLY and Novo Nordisk’s NVO popular GLP-1-based obesity drugs, Zepbound (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide), respectively, which are weekly injections. A monthly therapy like MariTide may help reduce treatment burden for patients and improve persistence on treatment over time.
Amgen is evaluating MariTide in type II diabetes, obesity and obesity-related conditions as part of its comprehensive MARITIME phase III program. Amgen has nine global phase III studies underway with MariTide in obesity and other obesity-related conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease and heart failure. Three phase III studies of MariTide in type II diabetes will be initiated in 2026.
In clinical studies, it has shown predictable and sustained weight loss and a clinically meaningful impact on cardiometabolic parameters.
In phase II studies, MariTide resulted in up to approximately 20% average weight loss over 52 weeks without reaching a weight loss plateau in people who were obese or overweight but without type II diabetes. In patients with type II diabetes who were obese or overweight, the weight loss reduction was approximately 17% at 52 weeks.
An interesting study is a new phase III switch study that will assess patients transitioning from weekly tirzepatide or semaglutide therapy to MariTide administered once every eight weeks or once every 12 weeks. In other words, the study will evaluate switching from Zepbound and Wegovy injections given 52 times a year to a medicine that can be injected 4 or 6 times a year.
MariTide is by far Amgen's most important obesity asset. However, Amgen’s obesity pipeline also includes earlier-stage oral and injectable candidates like AMG 513 and AMG 786.
Can AMGN Take Share from LLY and NVO in the Obesity Space?
MariTide is a closely watched drug in the obesity market. However, with MariTide, Amgen is entering a market that is heavily dominated by Lilly and Novo Nordisk. LLY and NVO already have a massive first-mover advantage in the obesity space and enjoy strong brand recognition.
Moreover, to maintain their prowess in the lucrative obesity market, both Novo Nordisk and Lilly are developing several next-generation, more powerful and more convenient GLP-1–based treatments, including oral options and multi-acting candidates.
Lilly's next-generation candidate, retatrutide, has demonstrated approximately 28% weight loss in late-stage studies, significantly above MariTide's approximately 20%.
This will make it difficult for Amgen to capture rapid market share on a weight-loss efficacy basis, even with a differentiated product like MariTide. However, from another perspective, the obesity market is huge and can support multiple players, and even a modest market share could translate into billions of dollars in annual revenues. MariTide’s less frequent dosing is its biggest competitive advantage, and if successfully developed and launched, MariTide could become the preferred option for patients who value convenience and durable weight maintenance.
Competition Heating Up in the Obesity Space
While Lilly and Novo Nordisk currently dominate this space, smaller biotechs like Structure Therapeutics and Viking Therapeutics are also developing oral GLP-1 drugs for treating obesity.
Others, such as Roche, Merck, AbbVie, and, more recently, Pfizer PFE, have strengthened their obesity pipelines through licensing deals and acquisitions involving smaller biotechs. Pfizer has strengthened its obesity presence with last year’s licensing of YP05002 from YaoPharma and the acquisition of Metsera. AbbVie entered the obesity field by licensing GUB014295 from Gubra. Roche strengthened its obesity presence through the acquisition of Carmot Therapeutics and its obesity assets, such as CT-388, as well as the exclusive collaboration with Zealand Pharma.
AMGN’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
Amgen’s stock has risen 5.3% so far this year compared with an increase of 4.0% for the industry.

Amneal and Pfizer GLP-1 Deal: New Growth Lever?

Eli Lilly LLY stock continues to hit new all-time highs as the drugmaker keeps delivering a steady stream of positive clinical updates across its diabetes and obesity portfolio.
LLY shares reached a record high of $1,149.15 on Monday following encouraging clinical results from late-stage studies of Foundayo (orforglipron), its oral GLP-1 therapy, and retatrutide, its investigational triple-hormone receptor agonist that targets the GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon pathways. The latest data presented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions further reinforced confidence in the company’s cardiometabolic franchise.
Per data from the phase III ACHIEVE-3 head-to-head study, Foundayo outperformed Novo Nordisk’s NVO oral semaglutide across both blood sugar control and weight-loss measures in adults with type II diabetes (T2D). Patients receiving the highest Foundayo dose achieved greater A1C reductions and significantly higher weight loss than those taking oral semaglutide, while a larger proportion reached normal blood sugar levels.
Foundayo also produced strong results in two additional late-stage studies. In ACHIEVE-2, the drug delivered superior A1C reduction and weight loss compared with AstraZeneca’s Farxiga (dapagliflozin). In ACHIEVE-5, Foundayo significantly improved glycemic control and body weight when added to insulin therapy. Collectively, the data strengthen Lilly’s case for expanding Foundayo into the T2D market, with a regulatory filing planned by the end of the second quarter.
Lilly is also investing heavily in next-generation candidates to maintain continued future profitability. The company recently reported additional phase III results for retatrutide. In the TRIUMPH-1 study, patients receiving the highest dose lost an average of 28.3% of their body weight over 80 weeks, with nearly two-thirds no longer meeting the clinical definition of obesity. Beyond weight reduction, retatrutide demonstrated meaningful improvements in obesity-related conditions, including knee osteoarthritis pain and moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. In the TRANSCEND-T2D-1 study, the candidate reduced A1C by up to 2% and delivered weight loss of up to 16.8%, with nearly half of the participants achieving normal blood sugar levels.
The latest findings build on positive top-line data Lilly had already reported from both the TRIUMPH-1 and TRANSCEND-T2D-1 studies earlier this year. Those earlier results established retatrutide’s ability to drive substantial weight loss and glycemic control. At the same time, the newly released detailed analyses further highlighted benefits across multiple obesity-related complications and cardiovascular risk factors. Together, the data continue to strengthen expectations that retatrutide could become one of Lilly’s most important future growth drivers.
Investors remain encouraged by Lilly’s ability to expand its leadership beyond blockbuster products like Mounjaro (T2D) and Zepbound (obesity), while simultaneously advancing next-generation therapies that could support long-term growth.
Lilly's Clinical Edge Continues to Pressure Novo Nordisk
Novo Nordisk remains Lilly’s fiercest rival in the obesity and diabetes markets. Novo Nordisk is also expanding its portfolio through higher-dose semaglutide products, label expansions and pipeline candidates such as CagriSema and amycretin.
However, Lilly’s recent string of clinical wins appears to be shifting competitive momentum in its favor. Foundayo’s superiority over Rybelsus in a direct phase III comparison and retatrutide’s impressive efficacy profile suggest Lilly could continue capturing market share across both diabetes and obesity. LLY now possesses a broad portfolio spanning injectable and oral therapies while also advancing next-generation treatments that may offer greater efficacy than currently available options.
LLY Faces Rising Pressure From Next-Generation GLP-1 Rivals
The obesity space has garnered much of the spotlight over the past year due to the sizeable and still underpenetrated market opportunity.
Smaller biotech firms, like Viking Therapeutics VKTX and Structure Therapeutics GPCR, are also advancing GLP-1–based therapies to challenge the incumbents. Viking Therapeutics’ dual GIPR/GLP-1 receptor agonist, VK2735, is being developed both as oral and subcutaneous formulations for the treatment of obesity. Viking Therapeutics plans to advance oral VK2735 into phase III development for obesity in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Structure Therapeutics’ phase II ACCESS study on its orally administered GLP-1 RA, aleniglipron, demonstrated significant weight loss across all doses. Structure Therapeutics expects to initiate the late-stage program of aleniglipron in obesity in the second half of 2026.
LLY’s Stock Price, Valuation and Estimates
