The company also provides insulin pens, growth hormone pens, and injection needles. The company has a collaboration agreement with Aspen Pharmaceuticals to produce insulin products. Novo Nordisk A/S was founded in 1923 and is headquartered in Bagsvaerd, Denmark.

Debt/equity is above the median, and long-term debt has increased noticeably compared with earlier periods, so leverage is not a strong point of the model. On the other hand, absolute figures for revenue, EBITDA, operating profit, and net profit are growing, while equity is increasing, which supports the company’s fundamental value. Gross profit and operating income also show solid scale and an improving earnings base, which is important for a long-term investor. Dividend yield remains moderate and is not the main driver of the investment case, so its contribution to revaluation is limited. Overall, the picture is rather positive, but not strong enough to aggressively raise the target price: high profitability and business growth are offset by expensive valuation multiples and weak liquidity. AbbVie is a broad biopharmaceutical giant with a diverse lineup of immunology and oncology drugs. Novo Nordisk focus is narrower, leading the world in metabolic health through its diabetes and obesity therapies. Both are high-profile pharmaceutical stocks, but they offer very different risk and reward profiles for retail investors.
AbbVie functions as a diversified pharmaceutical company that develops and sells therapies for immunology, oncology, and aesthetics. Net income for the year was nearly $16 billion, which is the total profit remaining after all costs and taxes. This performance resulted in a net margin of 33%, showing that the company retains a high percentage of its sales as profit.
As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is 0.7x. This means the company holds roughly $0.70 of debt for every dollar of equity held by shareholders. Novo's current ratio is 0.8x, and free cash flow for the year reached approximately $4.5 billion. Free cash flow is a critical measure of the cash a company generates after accounting for the money spent to maintain or expand its asset base.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?
AbbVie has a drug pipeline that some on Wall Street believe could include blockbusters (more than $1 billion in lifetime revenue) for treating schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, psychosis from Alzheimer's, and certain solid tumors.
On top of that, the business is buying itself additional growth with its recent deal to acquire Apogee Therapeutics. Its two relatively new immunology products, Skyrizi and Rinvoq, have proven to be true growth drivers for the business, and investors are hopeful that an FDA decision on a Parkinson's treatment later this year will bode well for the company. AbbVie is expected to see screaming growth in net income this year, from $4.2 billion to $14.6 billion. Sales should grow to $67.2 billion.
Novo Nordisk, meanwhile, has the blockbuster drugs Wegovy and Ozempic (the same drug marketed for different purposes) but faces investor doubts about its market position given a deal with the federal government to lower prices for the GLP-1s, the emergence of generic competitors, and the apparent advances by Eli Lilly & Co (NYSE:LLY) in developing weight loss drugs expected to be superior to Novo's offerings.
Still, the introduction of the once a day Wegovy pill in the U.S. has been a resounding success and the business has a patent on injectable Ozempic/Wegovy till 2032, providing it some competitive moat. Still, Wall Street sees sales declining in fiscal 2026 by about 3% with net income contracting 4% as pricing pressures erode margins just a bit. Longer-term, analysts expect the company to reverse the 2026 decline and start growing again as new products come on line.
It's hard to say don't buy the company that invented the GL-1 market, but AbbVie's near-term, growth is so impressive it is worth paying the slightly pricier premiums on its P/S and forward P/E ratios and waiting to see how Novo Nordisk adjusts to heightened competition.

Pfizer PFE stock has risen 8.6% in the past three months as investors have gained confidence in the company’s ability to stabilize earnings and offset the continued decline in COVID-19 product sales. A key catalyst has been a solid second-quarter performance, which showed that higher revenue from non-COVID products more than offset declining sales of its COVID products –Comirnaty (COVID-19 vaccine - in partnership with BioNTech [BNTX]) and Paxlovid (oral antiviral). Excluding sales from BioNTech-partnered Comirnaty and Paxlovid, revenues increased 5% operationally. Pfizer also raised the lower end of its 2026 revenue guidance, backed by continued strong performance of its new and acquired products.
The shares hit a fresh 52-week high on Sept. 3, 2026, reflecting a meaningful improvement in sentiment after years of pressure. Investors are increasingly looking beyond the COVID revenue decline toward Pfizer’s newer growth drivers, including oncology and other acquired assets and the company's pipeline and cost-cutting efforts.
However, to make an informed decision on whether to buy, sell or hold the stock, it is important to assess Pfizer’s fundamentals by weighing its key strengths against the risks and challenges it faces.
Pfizer’s Non-COVID Products Fueling Its Next Growth Phase
Pfizer's business mix has changed significantly over the past few years. During the pandemic, the company became heavily dependent on COVID-19 products. However, the company is gradually diversifying its portfolio through a combination of internal product launches like Abrysvo, Zavzpret, Elrexfio, Hympavzi, Litfulo and others, strategic acquisitions like Seagen, Metsera and Biohaven and the continued growth of several established brands like Vyndaqel, Padcev and Eliquis.
Pfizer expects its recently launched and acquired products to record continued double-digit growth. Reflecting this trend, sales from these products increased 22% operationally in the first quarter of 2026 and 18% in the second quarter.
Pfizer’s Oncology Portfolio Poised for Continued Growth
Pfizer is one of the world’s leading oncology drugmakers with a broad portfolio of marketed cancer therapies as well as a deep oncology pipeline spanning multiple treatment modalities, including small molecules, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and immuno-oncology biologics.
Oncology sales comprise around 27% of its total revenues. Its oncology revenues grew 5% in the first half of 2026, driven by drugs like Xtandi, Lorbrena, the Braftovi-Mektovi combination and Padcev. Pfizer considers Padcev to be a potential growth driver in the oncology segment and plans to invest in this asset.
Pfizer has ventured into the oncology biosimilars space and markets six biosimilars for cancer. It is also advancing its oncology clinical pipeline across areas such as breast, thoracic, gastrointestinal and blood cancers. Several oncology candidates have entered late-stage development, such as atirmociclib (a selective CDK4 inhibitor for HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer), sigvotatug vedotin (an antibody-drug conjugate for first-line metastatic non-small cell lung cancer) and mevrometostat (an EZH2 inhibitor being developed in combination with enzalutamide for prostate cancer).
A key candidate in its oncology pipeline is PF-08634404, a dual PD-1/VEGF inhibitor in-licensed from Chinese biotech 3SBio in 2025. Pfizer has initiated nine studies, including two pivotal phase III studies for PF-08634404 in first-line metastatic colorectal cancer and first-line NSCLC. Pfizer aims to establish PF-08634404 as a potential backbone therapy across multiple tumor types. By 2030, Pfizer expects to have eight or more blockbuster oncology medicines in its portfolio.
PFE Targets Obesity Market With Ambitious Phase III Program
The company is rebuilding its pipeline in oncology and obesity, which it believes can drive growth in 2028 and beyond. Pfizer plans an extensive phase III program for berobenatide, its monthly GLP-1 receptor agonist added from last year’s Metsera acquisition. In 2026. Pfizer plans 10 phase III studies for berobenatide for obesity and obesity-related comorbidities, including knee osteoarthritis and obstructive sleep apnea. Three phase III studies on berobenatide have already begun. Pfizer is targeting the first of a series of potential approvals for berobenatide in 2028. Pfizer is also evaluating berobenatide in combination with an amylin-based therapy, PF'3945, in phase II studies. However, in the obesity space, Pfizer lags far behind leaders like Eli Lilly LLY and Novo Nordisk NVO.
PFE’s COVID Business Faces Continued Revenue Declines
During the pandemic, Pfizer generated extraordinary COVID-related sales from Comirnaty and Paxlovid. Those revenues have fallen sharply as the pandemic faded.
Sales of Pfizer’s COVID products, Comirnaty and Paxlovid, came down to around $11 billion in 2024 and $6.7 billion in 2025 from $56.7 billion in 2022. Sales of Comirnaty are declining due to a narrow recommendation for COVID vaccines in the United States, while Paxlovid is experiencing reduced demand from lower infection rates.
In 2026, Pfizer expects COVID-related revenues of approximately $4 billion, down from its previous forecast of $5 billion and below $6.7 billion generated in 2025. The decline reflects the continued normalization of COVID-19 infection rates and lower demand for COVID products. Consistent with this trend, sales of both Comirnaty and Paxlovid declined significantly during the first half of 2026.
PFE’s LOE Headwinds
Pfizer faces a significant patent cliff later this decade. Pfizer expects a significant negative impact on revenues from the loss of exclusivity (LOE) cliff in the 2026-2030 period as several of its key products, including Eliquis, Ibrance, Xeljanz and Xtandi, face patent expirations. The LOE cliff is expected to hurt sales by approximately $1.1 billion in 2026.
Pfizer’s 2026 Guidance Points to Sluggish Growth
Pfizer’s revenue guidance for 2026 indicates mostly flat to slightly negative year-over-year growth.
Pfizer expects total revenues for 2026 to be between $60.5 billion and $62.5 billion. The range represents a slight decline from 2025 revenues of $62.6 billion due to lower revenues from COVID products, Comirnaty and Paxlovid, and loss of revenues from the upcoming patent cliff.
In 2026, Pfizer expects adjusted earnings per share in the range of $2.80-$3.00, which represents a decline from the 2025 EPS of $3.22 due to the dilutive impact of 3SBio and Metsera deals, lower COVID revenues and higher taxes.

That shows the opportunity that this new class of weight-loss drugs offers, but it also explains why Novo Nordisk, while first to market, isn't the industry leader today. That title goes to Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY).

There is always a competitor looking to knock you off your perch
Two of the most important things to understand about the pharmaceutical sector are that it is intensely competitive and driven by innovation. Just because a company has a blockbuster drug doesn't mean it has a lock on a medical condition. There's also the small issue of patent protection, which is time-limited for new drugs. So, even in the best-case scenario, a drug maker can only expect to generate outsize profits from a successful drug for a short period.
That's the backdrop within which you have to view Novo Nordisk. Yes, it was the first company to market with a GLP-1 weight-loss drug, but it quickly lost its lead to Eli Lilly. That's a big reason why investor sentiment has turned against Novo Nordisk. But Wall Street has a habit of going too far. This is where traditional valuation metrics come in for Novo Nordisk.
The stock's price-to-sales ratio is 4x as of this writing compared to a five-year average of 8.6x. Its price-to-earnings ratio is 11.6x compared to a five-year average of 25.1x. And its price-to-book ratio is 6.1x versus a longer-term average of 16.4x. By comparison, using the valuation metric that most investors lean on, the average drug maker's P/E is 26.5x.
From this perspective, Novo Nordisk does, in fact, look attractively priced. Value-focused investors would probably find it interesting. But add in a 3.7% dividend yield and a payout ratio below 40%, and the story could be attractive for dividend lovers, too.
Can Novo Nordisk get back in the game?
The problem here is that Novo Nordisk is in the middle of a transition period. First, the company is attempting to use its new GLP-1 pill to regain share in the GLP-1 weight-loss space. The Wegovy pill is seeing strong early success, but it remains unclear whether it will be enough to improve Novo Nordisk's competitive position against industry leader Eli Lilly, which has also recently introduced a GLP-1 pill.
Second, Novo Nordisk is attempting to change to a volume-driven model. That has meant lowering prices on its GLP-1 drugs in an effort to get more customers to use them. In the short term, this has resulted in weakness in revenue and earnings. As with the company's new pill, it is unclear whether a focus on volume will work out as hoped. In other words, there remains a significant amount of uncertainty.
Is Novo Nordisk worth buying?
Value investors and dividend investors should probably take a deep dive into Novo Nordisk. There is a lot of uncertainty right now as the company, effectively, attempts to turn its business around in the GLP-1 space. However, it is a well-respected drugmaker offering innovative products in a niche health area (weight loss) with significant long-term potential. Even if it doesn't unseat Eli Lilly from its GLP-1 lead, Novo Nordisk should still be able to generate significant revenues and earnings, and support an attractive yield. Given its valuation, the risk/reward balance is probably leaning toward reward right now. In other words, Novo Nordisk is, indeed, too cheap to ignore.

Is Novo Nordisk Stock Still Too Cheap for Investors to Ignore?

Novo Nordisk NVO announced positive data from the phase III STEP Young study evaluating once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide, in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, in children with obesity aged six to under 12 years.

The phase III STEP Young study met its primary endpoint by demonstrating a greater reduction in body mass index (BMI) at week 68 following treatment with semaglutide versus placebo. Both treatment groups received lifestyle modification, including a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Importantly, 40.4% of children who were treated with once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide were no longer classified as having obesity after week 68, compared with none in the placebo group. More than 85% of children had class II or III severe obesity at baseline.
Per the company, two out of five children treated with semaglutide reduced their BMI below the obesity threshold, reaching either a normal-weight or overweight classification, compared with none of the children receiving placebo.
The overall safety and tolerability profile of semaglutide seen in the STEP Young study was consistent with prior pediatric and adult studies, with no new safety concerns reported.

NVO Thrives on Semaglutide-Based Medicines
Novo Nordisk markets its semaglutide-based medicines under the brand names Ozempic (injection and oral pill) and Rybelsus (oral tablet) for type II diabetes (T2D), and Wegovy (injection and oral pill) for chronic weight management.
The company’s semaglutide-based medicines continue to demonstrate benefits beyond blood sugar control and weight loss, including reducing cardiovascular (CV) risk and improving kidney disease outcomes.
Novo Nordisk has been witnessing strong success with its GLP-1 medicines, Wegovy for obesity and Ozempic and Rybelsus for T2D.
In the first half of 2026, total reported Obesity care sales increased 20% year over year in DKK, or 24% at constant exchange rates, driven by higher sales across the Wegovy portfolio, including incremental sales from the newly launched Wegovy pill.
In late December, the FDA approved NVO’s 25 mg oral semaglutide (Wegovy pill) for obesity and CV disease, which was subsequently launched in early January. The Wegovy pill is also approved in the EU.
NVO Faces Rising Competitive Pressure
Novo Nordisk faces intense competition from Eli Lilly LLY in the obesity market. Lilly's Mounjaro for T2D and Zepbound for obesity have earlier demonstrated superior weight-loss efficacy in clinical studies, allowing the company to gain market share steadily. Despite being on the market for a shorter duration, these drugs have become LLY’s key top-line drivers.
Lilly has also secured FDA approval for its oral GLP-1 drug, orforglipron, for adults with obesity or overweight with weight-related medical problems, marketed under the brand name Foundayo.
While Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly currently dominate this space, smaller biotechs like Structure Therapeutics GPCR and Viking Therapeutics VKTX are also advancing GLP-1–based therapies for treating obesity.
Viking Therapeutics’ dual GIPR/GLP-1 receptor agonist (RA), VK2735, is being developed in both oral and subcutaneous formulations for the treatment of obesity. VKTX plans to advance oral VK2735 into phase III development for obesity in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Structure Therapeutics’ phase II ACCESS program on its orally administered small molecule GLP-1 RA, aleniglipron, demonstrated significant weight loss across all doses. Based on such encouraging results, GPCR has initiated dosing patients in its late-stage ACCOMPLISH program to evaluate aleniglipron for chronic weight management.

Novo Nordisk's Semaglutide Meets Goal in Pediatric Obesity Study

Netflix
Streaming giant Netflix has been struggling this year, amid questions about its future growth. The company is still generating double-digit growth, but with growing competition in the video streaming industry, the market appears less convinced of Netflix's future success.
As a result, Netflix's stock is down 17% this year, at one point falling as low as $65. On Friday, it closed at just over $78, and simply getting back to $100 would require a sizable 28% rally from its current level.
Netflix is, however, one of the better growth stocks to buy at under $100 as it provides investors with exposure to a top streaming company, which generates strong profit margins and has proven it can grow in many different ways, even as it has broadened its business to include live sports and gaming.
At 25 times its trailing earnings, Netflix is an excellent growth stock to buy today.
Uber Technologies
Shares of Uber are down around 18% over the past year. It has been an underperforming stock, but what's encouraging is that the business also has plenty of long-term growth opportunities to tap into.
In addition to continuing to grow its operations into more international markets, Uber has also partnered with multiple companies as it looks to be a big player in the robotaxi industry, recently launching a service in London, in partnership with a British technology company, Wayve.
The tech stock is trading at around $76, and its price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 17 looks incredibly attractive given how much potential room there still is for Uber's business to grow. In the trailing 12 months, the company has generated more than $55 billion in revenue, with its net income totaling a solid $9.6 billion.
Novo Nordisk
Healthcare giant Novo Nordisk has been struggling to win over investors as rival Eli Lilly has been dominating the GLP-1 drug market. However, with a top name in Ozempic and a higher-dose version of Wegovy showing it can potentially go toe-to-toe with Eli Lilly's leading product, there's still plenty of hope for Novo Nordisk stock to recover.
It's trading at around $47, and the stock is deeply discounted, as its P/E multiple is a lowly 11, suggesting that investors aren't giving it much of a chance. At such a low multiple, there's an appealing margin of safety that comes with the healthcare stock, and it may have plenty of room to rise higher if it can prove its doubters wrong.
The company has been facing challenges, largely due to rising competition. However, this is a stock that I think the market is dead wrong about, because Novo Nordisk still has some promising assets in its portfolio, and there is room for multiple drugs to perform well in the massive GLP-1 market.
Novo Nordisk's stock may be down, but I wouldn't count it out for the long run; now may be a great time to buy it while its valuation is incredibly low. As a bonus, it also offers a fairly high yield of around 3.9%.

Eli Lilly's (NYSE: LLY) success in the GLP-1 weight-loss space highlights one of the biggest risks it faces right now. And it helps explain why the company leading the GLP-1 race is working so hard to acquire smaller drugmakers to broaden its drug pipeline. The truth is, Eli Lilly's latest deals probably won't boost its stock right now, but they could be the foundation that builds the pharmaceutical giant's future. Here's what you need to know.
What does Eli Lilly do?
If you look at Eli Lilly's second-quarter revenues, you come away with a very clear picture of the pharmaceutical company's business. Mounjaro, Zepbound, and Foundayo account for nearly two-thirds of the company's top line. That's a huge number when you consider that all of these drugs are targeted at the same health issue: weight loss. But Eli Lilly isn't really a weight-loss company; it is a drug maker. It just happens that its weight-loss drugs have become incredibly important products.

What's interesting is that Eli Lilly wasn't the first to market with a weight-loss drug in the emerging GLP-1 space. The first company was Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO), with Wegovy. But Novo Nordisk struggled to keep up with demand, and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro and Zepbound shots appear to be more effective than Wegovy shots. Eli Lilly very quickly took the lead.
That's important to remember because it highlights the very real threat of new products in the pharmaceutical space displacing existing ones. Healthcare is an intensely competitive sector driven by innovation. Just because Eli Lilly is on top today does not mean it will remain there forever. Notably, Novo Nordisk beat Eli Lilly to market with a GLP-1 pill, and other companies, such as Pfizer (NYSE: PFE), are working on weight-loss drugs of their own. Eli Lilly is still the GLP-1 leader, but it knows it has to be prepared for the day when that's no longer the case.
Eli Lilly's dominance was always going to end
The interesting thing here is that Eli Lilly's GLP-1 drugs could remain the leading option, and the company would still see its leading position come to an end. That's because drugs have limited patent protection, with competitors allowed to produce generic versions of successful drugs after a set number of years. This is just how the drug sector works. Eli Lilly knows this and has been using the profits from its highly successful GLP-1 drugs to invest for the future.
Most recently, it agreed to acquire Merida Biosciences, a biotechnology company focused on the autoimmune and allergy spaces. The all-cash deal could cost as much as $2.875 billion if Merida Biosciences hits contractual development milestones. Right now, however, this deal isn't all that important to Eli Lilly's sales and earnings. But that doesn't mean it isn't important.
Merida Biosciences is just one of many acquisitions Eli Lilly has made over the last year or so. It has also acquired or agreed to acquire AtaiBeckley (NASDAQ: ATAI), which operates in the mental health space; Centessa Pharmaceuticals, which focuses on sleep-wake disorders; and Curevo, LimmaTech Biologics, and Vaccine Company, all of which operate in the infectious disease space. And those are just the most recent examples; there are more.
Eli Lilly's future is in its acquisitions
No single deal is all that significant. However, taken together, they show that Eli Lilly is attempting to broaden its therapeutic footprint as it prepares for the day when GLP-1 weight-loss drugs are no longer the revenue and earnings drivers they are today. You should be paying as much attention to Eli Lilly's acquisition spree as you do to its GLP-1 drugs. The impact won't be felt today, but these deals are what will, eventually, drive the company's future.

Eli Lilly Has Been on an Acquisition Spree. How Much Could Its Latest Deals Boost the Stock?

Eli Lilly LLY and Johnson & Johnson JNJ are two leading U.S.-based healthcare companies with strong positions across the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
Both companies have significant exposure to oncology, immunology and neuroscience. J&J’s business is more diversified, with treatments targeting cardiovascular and metabolic conditions, pulmonary hypertension and infectious diseases, along with a sizable medical devices operation. Lilly, meanwhile, has built a leading position in cardiometabolic care, fueled by its GLP-1 portfolio, with Mounjaro and Zepbound serving as major growth engines.
Both companies continue to deliver strong revenue and earnings growth and have promising long-term prospects. However, which stock presents the more attractive investment opportunity at current levels? An assessment of their fundamentals, growth potential, valuations and key risks can help determine which one offers the better risk-reward profile.
The Case for Lilly Stock
Lilly has seen extraordinary momentum in its cardiometabolic franchise. Its blockbuster drugs, Mounjaro for type II diabetes and Zepbound for obesity, have become some of the fastest-growing medicines in pharmaceutical history, gaining from enormous global demand for GLP-1 therapies. These therapies account for around 65% of the company’s total revenues and have become key top-line drivers for Lilly, with demand rising rapidly. In the first half of 2026, the drugs generated combined sales of $27.6 billion.
Lilly’s newly launched once-daily oral GLP-1 pill, Foundayo (orforglipron), for treating obesity, can prove to be a commercial game-changer for Lilly. Oral pills will be a more convenient alternative to the currently available once-weekly injectable obesity treatments like Zepbound and rival Novo Nordisk’s NVO Wegovy. Foundayo's launch uptake has been encouraging as Lilly expands physician engagement and direct-to-consumer promotion in the United States.
To maintain leadership in the GLP-1 market, Lilly is developing several next-generation, more powerful and more convenient GLP-1–based treatments, including oral options and multi-acting candidates. Retatrutide is one of Lilly’s most important late-stage pipeline candidates, targeting GLP-1, GIP and glucagon pathways and potentially delivering greater weight loss and broader metabolic benefits than current therapies. With late-stage studies spanning obesity, type II diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and other indications, Lilly plans to seek FDA approval in the first quarter of 2027, potentially creating another multibillion-dollar growth driver.
Lilly’s growth story is increasingly diversified beyond its GLP-1 franchise, with newer therapies such as Omvoh, Jaypirca, Ebglyss, Kisunla and Inluriyo gaining traction across multiple therapeutic areas. These products are becoming meaningful growth contributors.
The company has also embarked on an aggressive M&A spree in the past couple of years, acquiring biotech companies across oncology, neuroscience, cardiovascular disease, gene editing, inflammation, cell therapy and vaccines to diversify its long-term growth drivers beyond GLP-1 therapies. The company has announced around 10 small biotech M&A deals this year.
Lilly has its share of problems. Prices of most of Lilly’s products are declining in the United States. Price is expected to continue to be a drag on top-line growth in the low- to mid-teens percentage in 2026. Rising competition in the GLP-1 diabetes/obesity market is a key headwind. Also, sales of late-life cycle products like Trulicity, Taltz and Verzenio are expected to be flat to down in 2026.
The Case for J&J Stock
J&J’s biggest strength is its diversified business model, operating through pharmaceuticals and medical devices divisions, which reduces dependence on any single product or market. It has more than 275 subsidiaries and boasts 28 platforms or products with more than $1 billion in annual sales, with the aim of adding even more. Its diversification helps it to withstand economic cycles more effectively. It also boasts strong cash flows and has increased its dividends for 64 consecutive years. J&J believes the depth of its portfolio and pipeline is stronger than ever.
J&J’s Innovative Medicines segment is the company’s primary growth engine. Innovative Medicine segment sales rose 6.2% organically in the first half of 2026, despite the loss of exclusivity (LOE) of the blockbuster drug, Stelara. Growth was driven by J&J’s key drugs like Darzalex, Erleada and Tremfya. New drugs like Carvykti, Tecvayli, Talvey, Rybrevant and Spravato also contributed significantly to growth.
J&J’s MedTech growth slowed in the second quarter, reflecting weakness in Cardiovascular, particularly Abiomed due to slow procedure volumes, and continued China VBP headwinds.
J&J’s new cancer drugs, Carvykti, Tecvayli, Talvey and Rybrevant/Lazcluze are contributing significantly to top-line growth, driven by market share gains. Its recent pipeline launches, including Inlexzo, Imaavy and Icotyde, are gaining traction and could become significant growth drivers in future quarters.
J&J believes 10 of its new products in the Innovative Medicine segment have the potential to reach peak sales of $5 billion, including Talvey, Tecvayli, Imaavy, Caplyta, Inlexzo, Rybrevant, plus Lazcluze and Icotyde.
J&J expects 2026 to be a year of accelerated growth. The company is confident that it can achieve its target of generating more than $100 billion in revenues in 2026 with $49.4 billion already generated in the first half. It expects sales to continue to improve in 2027, with a “line of sight” to double-digit growth by the end of the decade. J&J believes that it is already achieving this growth. Though J&J’s total revenues are currently rising in a mid-single-digit range, excluding Stelara, J&J’s top line grew in a double-digit range in both the first and second quarters of 2026.
J&J also expects its MedTech business to do better in the second half of the year compared with the first, driven by strength in Vision, Orthopedics, Surgery and better performance in Cardiovascular. While the Abiomed softness creates a new overhang, it accounts for less than 2% of sales, and J&J has other top-line drivers to compensate.
However, J&J faces its share of headwinds, including the Stelara patent cliff, the upcoming LOE of key drugs Opsumit and Simponi, and softness in MedTech. The legal battle surrounding its talc lawsuits is another headwind. Though the issue is close to resolution, it has not yet been fully resolved.
How Do Estimates Compare for LLY & JNJ?
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for LLY’s 2026 sales and EPS implies a year-over-year increase of 35.4% and 48.4%, respectively. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 has risen from $35.56 to $35.93 per share over the past 60 days, while that for 2027 has risen from $44.58 to $45.93 per share over the same timeframe.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for J&J’s 2026 sales and EPS implies a year-over-year increase of 7.3% and 7.4%, respectively. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 earnings has risen from $11.58 to $11.59 over the past 60 days, while that for 2027 earnings has gone up from $12.65 per share to $12.80 over the same time frame.

Price Performance and Valuation of LLY & JNJ
So far this year, LLY’s stock has risen 6.9% and J&J’s stock has surged 33%. The industry has jumped 14.5% in the same time frame.

J&J looks more attractive than Lilly from a valuation standpoint. Going by the price/earnings ratio, Lilly’s shares currently trade at 26.87 forward earnings, significantly higher than 18.71 for the industry. However, LLY’s stock is trading below its 5-year mean of 34.57. J&J’s shares currently trade at 22.16 forward earnings, higher than the industry as well as the stock’s 5-year mean of 15.65.

LLY or JNJ: Which is a Better Pick?
J&J enjoys a diversified revenue base, a large cash-generating business and a long history of returning capital to shareholders. It is witnessing steady sales and earnings growth, continued strength in its Innovative Medicine business, and improving fundamentals and outlook. Despite several headwinds, J&J looks quite confident that it will be able to navigate these challenges.
Lilly remains one of the most compelling growth stories in the pharmaceutical industry, supported by its significant price appreciation, dominant position in the rapidly expanding obesity and diabetes markets, a diversified late-stage pipeline and strong financial performance.
Choosing between Eli Lilly and J&J is probably the most difficult choice to make among large drug stocks. Both have seen steady growth in sales and earnings, rising stock prices and analyst estimates and have an optimistic outlook for future growth. Additionally, continued pipeline advancements, favorable regulatory developments, and strategic M&A activity have strengthened investor sentiment for both stocks.
Both stocks have a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). However, we are selecting Lilly over J&J as the stock offers a substantially stronger long-term earnings-growth opportunity. Lilly vs. J&J: Betting on Breakout Growth or Built-In Stability?

(RTTNews) - Novo Nordisk (NVO, NOVOB.CO, NOV.DE) announced first results from the STEP Young phase 3 trial, evaluating once-weekly semaglutide in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity in children aged 6 to under 12 years old with obesity. These properties mean VK2735 could win market share in a crowded field, and investors are looking forward to the results of its phase 3 trials of VK2735 in subcutaneous formulation (likely in the second half of 2027) and VK2735 in oral formulation (set to commence later this year with results likely in 2028/2029). In addition, investors are awaiting the imminent results of a small (180 adults) phase 1 maintenance trial designed to evaluate dosing regimens.
The skeptics' case for Viking Therapeutics
As with clinical-stage biopharmaceutical companies, there are two key considerations for investors to ponder, both of which pose risks for Viking Therapeutics. The first is competition from rival drugmakers and its possible impact on the market potential of Viking's pharmaceuticals. The second is Viking's success in its clinical trials, as that will also determine the value of its pipeline.
The obesity and type 2 diabetes treatment market is highly competitive, with drugs already within VK2735's class of drugs, including oral formulations. Moreover, much larger peers like Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY), Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO), and Amgen are already developing next-generation or differentiated treatments.
Focusing on the more lucrative obesity market, the list of already approved drugs includes Eli Lilly's Zepbound (tirzepatide), which has the same mechanism as VK2735, and an oral tablet, Foundayo (orforglipron). Novo Nordisk has semaglutide approved as an injectable (Wegovy) for obesity and as an oral tablet (Rybelsus) for diabetes, with additional oral formulations for obesity in development.
Looking ahead, Eli Lilly plans to file for FDA approval of its GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon agonist, retatrutide, in early 2027, following several successful phase 3 trials. Novo Nordisk has CagriSema (which combines semaglutide and another drug) and an experimental drug, Amycretin, in phase 3 trials.
This is a highly competitive market, and it could be even more competitive by the time Viking completes its phase 3 trials for VK2735.
Clinical trial data
There is no end to reasons for trial failures. In the case of VK2735, it could come down to the safety and tolerability of the drug in oral form.
The stock crashed last summer after phase 2 results for VK2735 (oral) revealed a 20% discontinuation rate due to adverse events in the treated group. Oral formulations always have to answer the questions around potential gastrointestinal issues.
Any issue with the tolerability of VK2735 (oral) will threaten not only the market potential of the oral formulation itself but also its use as a maintenance dose in Viking's dual-formulation approach.
Where next for Viking Therapeutics
There's no doubt the company faces significant competitive and clinical trial risks, and investors are hoping Viking calibrates any titration issues with the oral formulation in the phase 3 trial. In the near term, the results from the phase 1 maintenance trial will provide indicative data on the potential dual-formulation strategy. A successful result may cause some skeptics to reconsider their position.

Viking Therapeutics Trades Well Below Its Wall Street Targets. Here's the Skeptics' Case.

Is it still worth it to invest in stocks right now? Yes, it is, and one way to do so is to look for beaten-down companies that look likely to recover. Here are two options to consider: Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG) and Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO). Despite recent challenges, both of these corporations look like great long-term picks.

1. Intuitive Surgical
Intuitive Surgical's latest version (the fifth) of its famous da Vinci system is popular among surgeons. However, the device carries lower margins than the company's average. That's one of the key reasons the stock has underperformed in recent years and is down 34% year to date. But Intuitive Surgical may be a great buy on the dip, as the da Vinci 5 is likely to make up for its lower margins down the road.
The device could meaningfully expand Intuitive Surgical's market thanks to several features that previous versions lacked. For instance, the da Vinci 5's Force Feedback Technology allows surgeons to better gauge the force they exert on patients' tissues during procedures, potentially improving outcomes. The device also has significantly greater computing capacity than older da Vinci systems and could eventually integrate many artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features.
No wonder it's been helping Intuitive Surgical expand its installed base.
In the second quarter, the company sold 468 da Vinci systems, 246 of which were da Vinci 5 systems. It brought the total installed base of its crown jewel to 11,710, up 12% year over year. Intuitive Surgical makes most of its money from the sale of perishable instruments and accessories. Increased procedure volume yields stronger recurring, higher-margin revenue from this source. And over the medium term, the da Vinci 5 could meaningfully grow procedure volume.
Further, the company could also reduce manufacturing costs associated with the da Vinci 5 -- thereby improving its margins -- as it scales production. Intuitive Surgical is still looking at a large addressable market in the robotic-assisted surgery industry, which is arguably underpenetrated. The company also boasts a wide moat thanks to high switching costs. Intuitive Surgical can bounce back from recent challenges and reward patient investors, which makes the stock a solid buy on the dip.
2. Novo Nordisk
Novo Nordisk was a pioneer in the GLP-1 weight loss market. But the company has lost its lead to its biggest rival, Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY). The Denmark-based pharmaceutical leader's financial results have been mediocre over the past couple of years. The stock is down substantially as a result, having lost 8% in value this year alone. The good news for Novo Nordisk is that after a series of clinical setbacks in its core area of expertise, the company appears ready to turn things around.
The drugmaker's future still largely hinges on its work in the GLP-1 market, and it boasts a deep pipeline in this field. Clinical wins over the next couple of years could send the stock price soaring. Let's discuss two of Novo Nordisk's most promising candidates. First, there is amycretin, a medicine that mimics the actions of the GLP-1 and amylin hormones. It posted highly promising results in a phase 1b/2a study. Patients on amycretin lost as much as 24.3% of their weight in 36 weeks. These are outstanding results, albeit in a study with a relatively small number of patients.
The medicine also posted excellent weight loss and A1C level reductions in patients with type 2 diabetes (who have a harder time losing weight). Further, this promising candidate is being developed in both subcutaneous and oral formulations. Then there is UBT251, which mimics the action of three gut hormones: GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. It posted a mean weight loss of up to 19.7% in a 24-week phase 2 study in China.
Again, there are caveats to keep in mind here, but these two candidates could help Novo Nordisk regain some market share in its core therapeutic area. Of note, the company has already made progress with the Wegovy pill, the first oral GLP-1 weight-loss medicine to earn approval. It has a leading market share in the oral weight loss niche. The GLP-1 market is projected to grow rapidly, and Novo Nordisk appears well-positioned to capitalize on it. That's why the stock is a buy as it remains well below its all-time highs.
