Rebounding from an inauspicious first half of the week, shares of Energy Fuels (NYSEMKT: UUUU) are soaring today. While investors would be right to suspect that the stock's climb has something to do with its nuclear energy business, it turns out that a development regarding the company's rare-earth operations is actually driving shares higher.
As of 12:04 p.m. ET, shares of Energy Fuels are up 8.3%, retreating from their earlier climb of 11.6%.

News out of the Beehive State is generating a lot of buzz today
Energy Fuels reported yesterday the it has achieved production of its first kilogram of dysprosium oxide -- a heavy rare-earth element -- at its White Mesa Mill in Utah. The company asserted in the related press release its belief that it's the first U.S. company to both produce high-purity dysprosium oxide and publicly disclose actual production volumes and purities.
The company is also exploring production of terbium oxide as it expands production of dysprosium oxide. Should the company continue to achieve favorable results, it plans on developing these elements at commercial scale as well as working on separation of other heavy rare-earth elements at the Utah facility, starting production as soon as fourth quarter 2026.
The domestic production of rare-earth elements is a priority of the Trump administration. The Department of Defense, for example, entered into a major public-private partnership with MP Materials earlier this summer.

Validea Detailed Fundamental Analysis - MP

Energy Fuels UUUU has reached a significant milestone by producing the first kilogram of dysprosium (Dy) oxide at pilot scale from its White Mesa Mill in Utah. The company exceeded expectations by attaining 99.9% purity, above the 99.5% commercial benchmarks. Per UUU, the quantity and purity of its Dy oxide production is unmatched in the United States at this time, underscoring its leading role in building a rare earth oxide supply chain independent of China.
The mill will currently produce Dy oxide at a rate of about two kilograms per week, using monazite feedstock mined in Florida and Georgia. This has sparked interest among magnet manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers to obtain these samples to accelerate their validation processes.
Energy Fuels plans to continue pilot-scale production until it produces approximately 15 kilograms of Dy oxide. Once this is achieved, Energy Fuels intends to produce high-purity terbium (Tb) oxide and is targeting the fourth quarter to deliver the first samples of Tb oxide for end-user validation.
Encouraged by the success of this "heavy" REE pilot project, UUUU plans to construct and commission commercial-scale Dy, Tb and other "heavy" REE separation capacity at its White Mesa Mill, which could start producing in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Last year, Energy Fuels completed and commissioned its commercial-scale "light" rare earth oxide circuit at the Mill with a successful run of 'on-spec' neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide. The material has been validated by magnet makers and is set to be used in EVs and hybrid vehicles across the United States, Europe and Asia this year.
Energy Fuels’ Donald Project in Australia could start production by the end of 2027. It is one of the richest deposits of HREEs in the world and could complement UUUU’s domestic operations. Also, its Toliara Project in Madagascar and the Bahia Project in Brazil contain significant quantities of light and heavy REE oxides, which can be supplied to U.S. and European manufacturers.
Recently, its peer, MP Materials MP, entered into a long-term agreement to supply Apple AAPL with rare earth magnets manufactured in the United States from fully recycled materials. Per the deal, MP Materials will supply Apple with magnets produced at Independence, its Fort Worth, TX, facility, using recycled rare earth feedstock processed at its Mountain Pass site in California.
The feedstock will be sourced from post-industrial and end-of-life magnets, marking a major milestone in both Apple and MP Material’s long-standing efforts to create sustainable, domestic supply chains.

News of a peer's magnet deal has USA Rare Earth investors repelled
Rare-earth-magnet producer Vulcan Elements signed a supply contract with ReElement for rare-earth oxides in mid-July, according to Reuters. While the companies refrained from providing specifics, they acknowledged that the pricing is "significantly below" the $110-per-kilogram floor that the U.S. Department of Defense ensured MP Materials (NYSE: MP).
Over the past three months, shares of USA Rare Earth have soared more than 45% (as of this writing) on the growing interest in U.S.-based rare-earth production and the enthusiasm about USA Rare Earth's magnet production facility in Oklahoma, which is is scheduled to begin operations in Q1 2026. With considerable expectations baked into the stock price of USA Rare Earth, investors are disappointed that Vulcan Elements is stealing the spotlight today.
Plus, investors may fear that the pricing terms that Vulcan Elements and ReElements agreed upon may not bode well for USA Rare Earth.

MP Quantitative Stock Analysis

Newmont is catching tailwinds from record-high gold prices, delivering record free cash flow in Q2.
MP Materials has secured major deals with the DoD and Apple, but faces near-term revenue pressure.
Mining companies have a reputation for being boom or bust. They can be defensive, cyclical, and -- if you pick right -- pretty rewarding over the long haul.
Right now, two mining stocks that stand out to me are Newmont (NYSE: NEM) and MP Materials (NYSE: MP). One is a gold miner with a huge global presence and agold marketthat's tilting in its favor. The other is America's rare-earth champion, or, rather, one of the few domestic sources for metals critical to defense, tech, and clean energy.

The first leans on demand that's been around for centuries, while the second is still out to prove its story. Let's start with the steadier of the two.
1. Newmont
Newmont is the world's largest gold miner, with operations spanning five continents. It's about as close to a blue-chip gold stock as you can get, with steady cash flow, global scale, and a front-row seat to the gold price show.
Speaking of which, gold prices have been on a tear in 2025. Just consider this: the average quarterly price for an ounce of gold hit an all-time high of $3,280.35 in June, an increase of 40% year over year and 15% from the previous quarter. JP Morgan now sees gold prices crossing $4,000 by the second quarter of next year, while Goldman Sachs is projecting a range of $3,650 to $3,950.
If either of those predictions comes true (and let's be clear -- they are only predictions), strong tailwinds would fluff up the sails of Newmont.
Already, the company has sailed high on the strength of gold this year. In Q2, it turned out about 1.5 million attributable ounces at an all-in sustaining cost (AISC) of $1,375 per ounce -- good enough to deliver a record $1.7 billion in free cash flow. That kind of cash covers the dividend (currently yielding about 1.45%) and funds a $3 billion stock buyback program.
Shares are up nearly 80% this year on the back of those results, yet Newmont still doesn't look expensive. Its enterprise value is just over 6.5 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), below the industry's usual 7-to-8 range and under its own long-term average. With gold's backdrop this strong and a healthy balance sheet, Newmont seems like a good buy for the long term.
2. MP Materials
MP Materials runs the only rare-earth mine in the United States, which produces elements like neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr). These metals are essential for producing high-strength magnets used in everything from smartphones to electric vehicles to wind turbines and fighter jets.
Currently, China is the dominant producer of these and other rare-earth metals. But MP Materials' Mountain Pass mine in California could give the U.S. a strategic foothold in securing its own supply chain. That fact alone has opened doors: a major Department of Defense contract that includes a price floor for NdPR at $110 per kilogram and a $500 million supply deal with Apple for magnets used in its devices.
Production has been ramping up fast. In the second quarter of 2025, MP Materials' NdPr production reached 597 metric tons, a record high. And with management expecting production to rise 10% to 20% over the next quarter, that record might not last. Meanwhile, losses narrowed more than expected, with a $0.13 per-share loss more favorable than the $0.20 that was forecast.
Still, a lot of questions remain, especially after MP Materials' decision in April to halt all exports to China, historically its biggest customer. The bet is that government contracts, Apple's magnet orders, and new buyers in the U.S., Japan, and South Korea will more than make up the difference. But the company will have to start selling more refined products instead of raw concentrate, which is problematic considering that its 10X Facility is still years from opening.
At the stock's current price, its forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 24 times already bakes in a lot of expectations for growth. That's rich for a miner in transition, especially one that's trading short-term revenue for the promise of downstream integration. For now, MP remains a high-risk, high-reward bet on U.S. supply chain independence -- worth watching, for sure, but best kept as a small holding of a portfolio.
