Beat the Market the Zacks Way: PDD, Shopify, 3M in Focus

3M (NYSE: MMM) stock is up 12.4% in the week to Friday morning, in a week where management released a positive set of third-quarter earnings and upgraded full-year guidance. A company raising full-year guidance is rarely bad news. Still, the real news here is not so much in the headline guidance as in the ongoing operational improvements driven by CEO Bill Brown since he began his tenure in May 2024.
3M's recovery continues
Management upgraded full-year earnings-per-share (EPS) guidance from a previous range of $7.75 to $8 to a new range of $7.95 to $8.05, and tweaked organic revenue growth guidance from about 2% to more than 2%. However, this isn't a story of slightly better end markets bleeding into a somewhat improved earnings outlook.

Instead, 3M's self-help initiatives are driving underlying improvement at the company, and that bodes well for when its industrial, safety, electronics, consumer, and automotive end markets start improving. Discussing the third-quarter organic revenue growth of 3.2% (management had previously predicted 2.5%), Brown said 50 of the 70-basis-points improvement to expectations (where 100 basis points equals 1%) came down to "self-help" initiatives such as improving commercial operations and new product introductions (NPI), driving sales.
What's next for 3M?
Returning 3M to its roots as a company, driving revenue growth through NPI while executing well on things like asset utilization and on-time in-full deliveries has been a key focus of Brown's tenure, and it appears to be working. Moreover, given that the company is still in the early innings of Brown's plans, investors can expect much more in the coming years.

Here's Why 3M Stock Soared Again This Week

Wall Street closed mixed on Tuesday, driven by industrial and discretionary stocks. Investor mood was slightly upbeat on strong corporate earnings, and President Trump expressed hope about a fair deal being struck with China. One of the three benchmark indexes finished in the green, one in red, while one remained virtually unchanged.
How Did the Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) climbed 0.5%, or 218.16 points, to close at 46,924.74. Eighteen components of the 30-stock index ended in positive territory, while 12 ended in negative.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost 36.88 points, or 0.2%, to close at 22,953.67.
The S&P 500 gained 0.22 points, remaining virtually flat at 6,735.35. Five of the 11 broad sectors of the benchmark index closed in the green. The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY), the Industrials Select Sector SPDR (XLI) and the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR (XLC) advanced 1.2%, 0.9% and 0.4%, respectively, while the Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU) fell 0.1%.
The fear gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) decreased 2% to 17.87. A total of 19.7 billion shares were traded on Tuesday, lower than the last 20-session average of 20.3 billion. Advancers outnumbered decliners by a 1.27-to-1 ratio on the NYSE, while on the Nasdaq, decliners edged past advancers by a 1.11-to-1 ratio.
Wall Street Mixed as Solid Industrial Earnings Lift Dow, Tech Stocks Lag
On Tuesday, investors weighed a strong batch of corporate earnings against concerns about the sustainability of the recent rally. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced modestly, supported by upbeat results from several industrial and capital goods companies, while the S&P 500 closed almost unchanged and the Nasdaq Composite slipped, dragged by weakness in a few large-cap tech names.
The day’s gains were fueled primarily by solid third-quarter earnings reports, which continued to signal resilience in the broader U.S. economy despite slowing growth in certain sectors. Companies in manufacturing, construction equipment and transportation reported robust demand and better-than-expected profits, reflecting sustained business spending and infrastructure activity. Companies like General Motors Company GM, Lockheed Martin Corporation LMT and 3M Company MMM beat earnings estimates and raised their forecasts for the year. These upbeat results bolstered cyclical stocks and helped the Dow outperform.
Meanwhile, investors remained cautious about the tech sector, where some high-valuation stocks faced mild profit-taking after recent strong advances. Market participants also looked ahead to key reports from major tech firms later in the week, which are expected to offer further insight into consumer and enterprise spending trends. Bond yields edged higher, with the 10-year Treasury yield hovering near 4.3%, as traders reassessed the Fed’s rate outlook. Tuesday’s session highlighted the rotation from defensive to cyclical sectors, with industrials, materials and select consumer discretionary names attracting buying interest.

President Donald Trump struck a conciliatory tone toward China on Tuesday, saying he expected to reach a “fair and fantastic trade deal” with President Xi Jinping if discussions progressed after their next meeting. He also downplayed fears of a Taiwan conflict, suggesting that China “doesn’t want to do that,” signaling a softer stance after weeks of hawkish rhetoric. His comments were widely interpreted as an attempt to calm trade tensions and reassure global investors about U.S.-China relations. Markets responded positively to Trump’s remarks. Wall Street indexes edged higher, with cyclical and industrial stocks gaining as traders viewed his comments as a sign of easing geopolitical friction.

Stock Market News for Oct 22, 2025

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed unchanged, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.47%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.06%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) fell -0.05%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) fell -0.08%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 posting a one-week high and the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching a new record high. The broader market found support Tuesday on some positive corporate news. General Motors closed up more than +14% after raising its full-year adjusted EPS estimate. Also, 3M Co closed up more than +7% after raising its full-year adjusted EPS continuing operations estimate. In addition, RTX Corp closed up more than +7% after raising its full-year adjusted sales estimate. Finally, Coca-Cola closed up more than +4% after reporting better-than-expected Q3 comparable EPS.

On the negative side, mining stocks retreated on Tuesday after the price of gold sank by more than -5% and silver prices plunged by more than -7% due to long liquidation pressures following their rallies to record highs last week. Also, weakness in semiconductor stocks weighed on the Nasdaq 100.
Gains in stocks were limited on Tuesday as they consolidated some of their sharp gains made over the past two sessions. The market is focusing on progress in US-China trade talks, as President Trump on Monday reiterated his threat to boost tariffs on Chinese goods "if there isn't a deal" by November 1. President Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in South Korea.
In some minor US economic news, the Oct Philadelphia Fed non-manufacturing business activity survey fell -9.9 to a 4-month low of -22.2.
The shutdown of the US government continues into its fourth week, weighing on market sentiment and delaying key economic reports. The government shutdown means delays in the release of government reports, including the last three weeks of weekly initial unemployment claims and the Sep payroll report. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said the September consumer price report, which was initially scheduled to be released last Wednesday, will be released this Friday. The White House has warned that if the government shutdown lingers, it would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don't align with President Trump's priorities. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
Trade tensions between the US and China, the ongoing US government shutdown, and fears about credit quality in the US have sparked a buying spree in precious metals as a haven, with gold and silver reaching fresh all-time highs last Friday.
The markets this week will focus on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season continues. Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 85% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts. Also, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 that have provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results are expected to beat analysts' expectations, the highest in a year. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from 6.4% in Q2.
The markets are pricing in a 97% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 rallied to a new all-time high and closed up +0.10%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.36%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 rose to a new record high and closed up by +0.27%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Tuesday closed up +5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -2.5 bp to 3.955%. T-note prices moved higher on Tuesday due to the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates. T-notes remained higher after the Oct Philadelphia Fed non-manufacturing business activity survey fell to a 4-month low.
European government bond yields moved lower on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield fell -2.5 bp to 2.552%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -2.7 bp to 4.478%.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers

Stocks Settle Mixed on Strong Earnings and Weakness in Mining Stocks

On the negative side, mining stocks are under pressure today, with the price of gold down by more than -4% and silver prices sinking by more than -7% due to long liquidation pressures following their rallies to record highs last week. Also, weakness in chipmakers today is weighing on the Nasdaq 100.
Gains in stocks are limited as they consolidate some of their sharp gains made over the past two sessions. The market is focusing on progress in US-China trade talks, as President Trump on Monday reiterated his threat to boost tariffs on Chinese goods “if there isn’t a deal” by November 1. President Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in South Korea.
In some minor US economic news, the Oct Philadelphia Fed non-manufacturing business activity survey fell -9.9 to a 4-month low of -22.2.
The shutdown of the US government continues into its fourth week, weighing on market sentiment and delaying key economic reports. The government shutdown means delays in the release of government reports, including the last three weeks of weekly initial unemployment claims and the Sep payroll report. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said the September consumer price report, which was initially scheduled to be released last Wednesday, will be released this Friday. The White House has warned that if the government shutdown lingers, it would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don’t align with President Trump’s priorities. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
Trade tensions between the US and China, the ongoing US government shutdown, and fears about credit quality in the US have sparked a buying spree in precious metals as a haven, with gold and silver reaching fresh all-time highs last Friday.
The markets this week will focus on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season continues. Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 85% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts. Also, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 that have provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results are expected to beat analysts’ expectations, the highest in a year. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from 6.4% in Q2.
The markets are pricing in a 99% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Overseas stock markets are higher today. The Euro Stoxx 50 rallied to a new all-time high and is up +0.02%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed up +1.36%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 rose to a new record high and closed up by +0.27%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) are up +5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -2.5 bp to 3.955%. T-note prices today are slightly higher. T-notes have support due to the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates. T-notes maintained modest gains after the Oct Philadelphia Fed non-manufacturing business activity survey fell to a 4-month low.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield is down -2.2 bp to 2.555%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -2.3 bp to 4.482%.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.

Stocks Supported by Strong Q3 Earnings Results

3M Company MMM reported third-quarter 2025 results, wherein revenues and earnings surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
It’s worth noting that in April 2024, the company completed the spin-off of its Healthcare business into a separate public company.
Inside MMM’s Headlines
3M delivered adjusted earnings of $2.19 per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.10. The company reported earnings of $1.98 per share in the year-ago quarter.
The company reported net revenues of $6.52 billion in the quarter. The metric increased 3.5% year over year. Organic sales increased 2.6%. Foreign currency translation had a positive impact of 1% while acquisitions/divestitures had a negative impact of 0.1%.
MMM’s adjusted revenues of $6.30 billion beat the consensus estimate of $6.25 billion. On an adjusted basis, organic revenues increased 3.2% year over year.

Revenues from Transportation & Electronics totaled $2.19 billion, reflecting a year-over-year increase of 2.4%. The upside is attributable to a 1.8% increase in organic sales. The consensus estimate for the segment’s revenues was pegged at $1.98 billion. Foreign currency translation had a 0.9% favorable impact while divestiture had an adverse impact of 0.3% on revenues.
Revenues from the Consumer segment increased 0.9% year over year to $1.31 billion. The consensus estimate for the segment’s revenues was also pegged at $1.31 billion. Organic sales increased 0.3%. Movements in foreign currencies had a positive impact of 0.6%.
MMM’s Margin Profile
3M’s cost of sales increased 4% year over year to $3.79 billion. Selling, general and administrative expenses decreased 22.8% to $820 million. Research, development and related expenses increased 10.4% year over year to $297 million.
In the third quarter, 3M reported an operating income of $1.45 billion, up 10% from the year-ago period.

3M generated net cash of $723 million in operating activities compared with $1 million cash generated in the year-ago quarter. Capital used for purchasing property, plant and equipment decreased 25.6% to $662 million.
Adjusted free cash flow at the end of the quarter was $3.08 billion, up 13% year over year. Adjusted free cash flow conversion was 91% in the quarter.
In the first six months of 2025, 3M rewarded its shareholders with $1.2 billion in dividend payments.
MMM’s 2025 Guidance
For 2025, MMM expects adjusted earnings to be in the range of $7.95-$8.05 per share compared with $7.75-$8.00 previously projected. The midpoint of the guided range is about $8.00, which reflects an increase from earnings of $7.30 per share reported in 2024.
Adjusted total revenues are expected to grow more than 2.5%, while adjusted organic revenue growth is projected to be more than 2%. It expects adjusted operating cash flow of $5.2-$5.4 billion, with more than 100% adjusted free cash flow conversion rate.

Stocks Mixed on Mostly Positive Corporate News

Pre-markets are flat a half-hour prior to the opening bell today. Major market indexes rebounded into the green over the past month in what has so far been a fairly turbulent October, and are back to all-time highs. The Dow and the S&P 500 are both up +2 points at this hour, the Nasdaq is at 0.0. The small-cap Russell 2000, which has outperformed the field over the past two trading days, is -3 points.
We’ll get a new Consumer Price Index (CPI) this week, but not until Friday. The government shutdown has now gone on three weeks, and we’ve been devoid federal government economic data since the first of the month. What’s important about this week is the cornucopia of earnings reports:
Q3 Earnings Ahead of the Open: GE, GM, LMT, KO, MMM
GE Aerospace GE beat consensus estimates on earnings by 20 cents: $1.66 per share versus $1.46, for a +13.7% surprise. Revenues came in at $11.3 billion, +9.4% above expectations. Shares are up again on the news, by +2.75% — adding to its extraordinary performance so far in 2025, +81.5%.
General Motors GM sees its shares +11% in early trading on big beats in its Q3 report this morning. Earnings of $2.80 per share outperformed the Zacks consensus by +22.8%, on a +9.76% revenue beat to $48.59 billion — the strongest quarter since 2017. Business in China was good, as we’ve heard elsewhere so far this earnings season.
Lockheed Martin LMT shares are flat on its Q3 beat this morning: earnings of $6.95 per share outpaced the $6.33 estimate by +9.8%. Guidance had been revised lower earlier in the quarter. Revenues of $18.61 billion was ahead of projections by +0.28%. Shares continue to underperform the broader indexes year to date.
Coca-Cola KO is up +2.86% this pre-market, with a 4-cents earnings beat to 82 cents per share. Revenues of $12.41 billion surpassed expectations by +10%. The company has so far been able to pass along price increases to its customers.
3M MMM beat and raised this morning in its Q3 report. Earnings of $2.19 per share beat the Zacks consensus of $2.10 by +4.3%. Revenues of $6.34 billion were ahead of the $6.25 billion estimated. Full-year earnings guidance has pulled up beyond current consensus, to $7.95-8.05 per share.
What to Expect from the Stock Market Today
Among those companies posting earnings after today’s close is Netflix NFLX — the first of the so-called “Mag 7” stocks to report this quarter. Expectations are for solid growth numbers on both top and bottom lines: +27.6% on earnings per share and +17.3% on revenues. The company has beaten its earnings estimates in all of the past four quarters by an average +6.4%. Shares are flat now, but +39% year to date.
