Energy producers are under pressure today, with WTI crude oil sinking by more than 4% as geopolitical risks ease after President Trump said the US is talking to Iran, and Iran’s foreign ministry said it hopes diplomatic efforts will avert a war.
Cryptocurrency stocks are retreating today with Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) down more than -7% to a 9.75-month low. According to Coinglass, nearly $590 million in long Bitcoin positions were liquidated over the weekend.
Signs of weakness in China’s economy are bearish for global growth prospects and stocks. The Shanghai Composite Stock Index fell more than -2% today to a 4-week low after the China Jan manufacturing PMI unexpectedly fell -0.8 to 49.3, weaker than expectations of no change at 50.1. Also, the Jan non-manufacturing PMI unexpectedly fell -0.8 to 49.4, weaker than expectations of an increase to 50.3 and the steepest pace of contraction in three years.
The markets this week will focus on tariff news, earnings, and economic news. Later today, the Jan ISM manufacturing index is expected to climb by +0.6 to 48.5. On Tuesday, the Dec JOLTS job openings are expected to increase by +104,000 to 7.250 million. On Wednesday, the Jan ADP employment change is expected to increase by +45,000. Also, the Jan ISM services index is expected to fall by -0.3 to 53.5. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to increase by +3,000 to 212,000. On Friday, Jan nonfarm payrolls are expected to climb by +65,000 and the Jan unemployment rate is expected to remain unchanged at 4.4%. Also, Jan average hourly earnings are expected up +0.3% m/m and +3.6% y/y. Finally, the University of Michigan Jan consumer sentiment index is expected to fall -1.5 to 54.9.
Q4 earnings season is in full swing, with 150 of the S&P 500 companies scheduled to report earnings this week. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 78% of the 167 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 13% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up by +0.35%. China’s Shanghai Composite fell to a 4-week low and closed down -2.48%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 fell from a 2.5-week high and closed down -1.25%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) today are down by -2 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +1.2 bp to 4.248%. T-notes are slightly lower today on negative carryover from last Friday when President Trump nominated Keven Warsh as the next Fed Chair. Mr. Warsh is seen as more hawkish than other Fed Chair candidates and often emphasized inflation risks during his tenure as a Fed Governor from 2006-2011. Losses in T-notes are limited as today’s -4% plunge in crude oil prices has weakened inflation expectations and is bullish for T-notes.
European government bond yields are mixed today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +0.7 bp to 2.850%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -2.4 bp to 4.498%.
The Eurozone Jan S&P manufacturing PMI was revised upward by +0.1 to 49.5 from the previously reported 49.4.
German Dec retail sales rose +0.1% m/m, right on expectations, and Nov retail sales were revised upward by +0.1 to -0.5% m/m from the previously reported -0.6% m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance of a +25 bp rate hike by the ECB at its next policy meeting on February 5.
US Stock Movers
Chip makers and AI infrastructure stocks are rebounding today, lifting the overall market. Sandisk (SNDK) is up more than +7% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after CTBC Securities Investment Service Co Ltd initiated coverage on the stock with a buy recommendation and a price target of $660. Also, Western Digital (WDC), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are up more th +3%. In addition, Intel (INTC) and Lam Research (LRCX) are up more than +2%.
US rare-earth stocks are climbing today as President Trump is set to launch a strategic stockpile of critical minerals with $12 billion in seed money to lower reliance on China. As a result, USA Rare Earth (USAR) is up more than +9%, and United States Antimony Corp (UAMY) is up more than +8%. Also, MP Materials (MP) and Critical Metals Corp (CRML) are up more than +4%. In addition, Ramaco Resources (METC) is up more than +1%.

Palantir Technologies (PLTR) is up more than +3% after William Blair upgraded the stock to outperform from market perform.
Oracle (ORCL) is up more than +3% after stating it plans to raise $45 billion to $50 billion this year through a combination of debt and equity sales to build additional cloud infrastructure capacity.
Autodesk (ADSK) is up more than +2% after JPMorgan Chase upgraded the stock to overweight from neutral with a price target of $319.
Walt Disney (DIS) is down more than -6% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after several analysts said the company’s quarterly outlook for Q2 was disappointing.
IDEXX Laboratories (IDXX) is down more than -3% after reporting Q4 gross margin of 60.3%, below the consensus of 61%.
Humana (HUM) is down more than -2% after Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock to underweight from equal weight with a price target of $174.

The Zacks Coal industry is facing multiple headwinds as the use of coal in U.S. thermal power plants continues to decline. Per the U.S. Energy Information Administration (“EIA”), in 2026, demand for coal is projected to decline as usage of renewable sources increases for electricity generation. In addition, given the ongoing energy transition, marked by utility operators systematically phasing out coal assets, coal demand is expected to drop in 2026.
Per EIA, coal export volumes are expected to improve in 2026, due to an increase in metallurgical coal export volumes. Despite a drop in coal production in 2026, Warrior Met Coal, Peabody Energy Corp. and Ramaco Resources, with high-quality met coal production volumes, are expected to gain during this challenging phase.
About the Industry
The Zacks Coal industry consists of companies engaged in the exploration and mining of coal, which is extracted through either open-cast or underground methods. Valued for its high energy content, coal remains a key resource globally for electricity generation and the production of steel and cement.
Per the EIA finding, the United States has an estimated 252 billion short tons of recoverable coal reserves, with roughly 58% classified as underground mineable. At current production levels, these reserves are expected to last for many decades.
Notably, five U.S. states account for about 70% of annual coal production and 60% of coal extracted from surface mines. However, the EIA projects that coal demand will continue to decline as renewable energy adoption accelerates and coal-fired power plants are gradually retired, posing long-term challenges for the industry.
3 Trends Likely to Impact the Coal Industry
Despite Reliability, the Emission Policy to Hurt the Coal Industry: Coal remains a dependable energy source, capable of providing around-the-clock electricity from generation units. However, rising environmental concerns are leading to a steady decline in its use for power generation. The United States’ Sustainability Plan targets a transition to 100% carbon pollution-free electricity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. This shift is being accelerated by the increasing adoption of natural gas and renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
Natural gas has become more cost-efficient due to advancements in fracking technology, while renewables have gained traction thanks to falling production costs and supportive government initiatives. According to the EIA, coal’s share in U.S. electricity generation is expected to decline in 2026 from 2025 levels. Without substantial investment in pollution-control technologies for coal-fired power plants, domestic coal usage is likely to keep falling due to the retirement of coal-fired capacity.
U.S. Coal Production: Per EIA’s projection, coal production in the United States is expected to be 520 million short tons (MMst) in 2026, down from the 2024 volume of 531 MMst, due to lower usage of coal in power generation and higher usage of renewable sources. The utilities have also built large coal inventories in 2025, which is also reducing coal demand, ultimately having an adverse impact on production. Coal’s share in the U.S. electric generation is expected to drop 100 basis points in 2026 to touch 16%.
Coal Industry to Experience Marginal Increase in Exports: U.S. coal companies are likely to gain from 1% increase in export volumes in 2026 compared with 2025, per the projection provided by EIA. The improvement in export volumes was driven by an 8% increase in metallurgical shipments, aided by the longwall expansion at Alabama’s Blue Creek mine and the reopening of the Leer South and Longview mines in West Virginia.
Zacks Industry Rank Indicates Weak Prospects
The Zacks Coal industry is a seven-stock group within the broader Zacks Oil and Energy sector. The industry currently carries a Zacks Industry Rank #235, which places it in the bottom 4% of 244 Zacks industries.
The group’s Zacks Industry Rank, which is the average of the Zacks Rank of all the member stocks, indicates lackluster performance in the near term. Our research shows that the top 50% of the Zacks-ranked industries outperform the bottom 50% by a factor of more than two to one.

In the press release trumpeting the program, Ramaco implied that its current financial situation was sturdy enough for the move. It quoted CEO Randall Atkins as saying that "With the closing of Ramaco's previously announced $600 plus million (before fees) in capital raises in the second half of 2025, we are well-positioned to pursue opportunities to unlock value and maximize shareholder returns.
"The share repurchase program highlights our confidence in our continued operational performance as well as financial strength," he added.
Rare potential
Since it specializes in metallurgical coal, Ramaco (and its peers) are essentially plays on the steel industry. As long as demand for steel is fairly robust, the industry should do well, all things being equal.
Though steel is on something of an upswing these days, I don't think it's exciting enough on its own to warrant a buy for Ramaco. Yet the company is an active developer of valuable rare-earth elements; in fact, it owns a rare-earth mine in Wyoming. If anything, I'd put money on Ramaco stock because of the high potential of such materials.

Foolish Take
What matters most for long-term investors here is not the stock’s violent swing, but whether the underlying business is becoming more durable at the bottom of the cycle. This move reflects a willingness to look past near-term price action and focus on balance sheet strength and optionality.
Ramaco’s third-quarter results show why that matters. Despite weak metallurgical coal pricing, the company ended September with record liquidity of $272 million and a net cash position of more than $77 million, its strongest balance sheet on record. Cash costs remained firmly in the first quartile of the U.S. cost curve at $97 per ton, and adjusted EBITDA came in positive at $8.4 million even as benchmark coal prices declined.
More importantly, Ramaco is no longer just a coal story. Management is accelerating development of its Brook Mine in Wyoming, where it plans to produce roughly 3,400 tons per year of rare earth and critical mineral oxides, a 175% increase from prior expectations. That transition is backed by capital, not leverage, which lowers execution risk relative to smaller resource peers. In portfolio context, this position is modest at about 1.2% of assets, far smaller than core mega-cap technology holdings. That suggests a measured, asymmetric bet rather than a speculative swing. For patient investors, the volatility may be the price of accessing a business with both cyclical recovery upside and a credible path into strategic minerals.

Up 400%, Down 70%: Why a $5 Million Bet on Ramaco Resources Signals Long-Term Conviction

Asset markets rebounded on Monday after the Trump administration softened its rhetoric toward China. Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks also rallied on Monday, with Broadcom jumping more than 9% after OpenAI signed a multi-year agreement with the company to collaborate on custom chips and networking equipment, which could add 10 gigawatts' worth of AI data center capacity.

There was no trading in cash Treasuries on Monday due to the Columbus Day holiday. The price of gold surged by more than 3% on Monday to a new all-time high, driven by central bank buying, expectations for additional Fed rate cuts, and safe-haven demand stemming from the US government shutdown, threats to the Fed's independence, global trade tensions, and geopolitical risks.
Dovish comments on Monday from Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson were supportive for stocks, as she said she favors two more quarter-point interest rate cuts this year, given that she doesn't see conditions that would turn tariff-induced price increases into sustained inflation.
The Trump administration signaled openness on Sunday to a trade deal with China in an attempt to ease trade tensions. Stocks plunged last Friday after President Trump threatened 100% tariffs on Chinese goods and restrictions on US software exports, effective November 1, in retaliation for China's sweeping new curbs on exports of rare-earth materials and related technology.
Trade news from China was better than expected, a positive sign for global economic growth and a bullish factor for the stock market. China Sep exports rose +8.3% y/y, stronger than expectations of +6.6% y/y and the biggest increase in six months. Also, Sep imports rose +6.4% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.8% y/y and the largest increase in 17 months.
Most stock indexes rallied to record highs last week on optimism that growth in the AI sector and spending on artificial intelligence will translate into corporate profits. Stocks are also underpinned by hopes that a resilient US economy and additional Fed easing will continue to support the economy.
The shutdown of the US government continues, weighing on market sentiment and delaying key economic reports. The government shutdown means delays in the release of government reports, including the last two weeks of weekly initial unemployment claims, the Aug US trade report, and the Sep nonfarm payrolls report. Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said that it will release the September consumer price report on October 24 if the government shutdown continues into Wednesday, when the Sep CPI report is scheduled for release. The White House has warned that if the government shutdown lingered, it would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don't align with President Trump's priorities. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets this week will focus on trade or tariff news and any attempts to reopen the government. On Tuesday, Fed Chair Powell delivers the keynote address at the NABE Annual Meeting. Also on Tuesday, major banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo & Co., will begin releasing their earnings results as the Q3 earnings season begins.
Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results that are expected to beat analysts' expectations, the highest in a year. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2%, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% from 6.4% in Q2.
The markets are pricing in a 98% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Overseas stock markets on Monday settled mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.67%. China's Shanghai Composite fell to a 2.5-week low and closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 did not trade as markets in Japan are closed for the Health-Sports Day holiday.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Monday closed up +0.5 of a tick. Cash 10-year T-notes did not trade on Monday, with the Treasury market closed for the Columbus Day holiday. Dec -T-notes were little changed on Monday and found support on dovish comments from Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson, who said she favors two more quarter-point interest rate cuts this year. T-notes also have support amid concerns about the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates. Gains in T-notes were limited after stocks rebounded sharply, which curbed safe-haven demand for government debt securities.
European government bond yields moved lower on Monday. The 10-year German bund yield dropped to a 2-month low of 2.622% and finished down -0.8 bp at 2.636%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell to a 3-week low of 4.644% and finished down -1.7 bp to 4.658%.
The German Sep wholesale price index rose +1.2% y/y, the fastest pace in six months.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers rallied sharply higher on Monday, boosting the overall market. Broadcom (AVGO) closed more than +9% after OpenAI signed a multi-year agreement with the company to collaborate on custom chips and networking equipment. Also, ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed up more than +11% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and ON Semiconductor (ON) closed up more than +9%. In addition, Micron Technology (MU) and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed up more than +6%, and ASML Holding NV (ASML), Qualcomm (QCOM), and NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) closed up more than +5%. Finally, Applied Materials (AMAT), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Lam Research (LRCX), KLA Corp (KLAC), Analog Devices (ADI), GlobalFoundries (GFS), and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +4%.
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks rose on Monday as they recovered some of the losses from last Friday's plunge. Tesla (TSLA) closed up more than +5% and Alphabet (GOOGL) closed up more than +3%. Also, Nvidia (NVDA) closed up more than +2%, and Amazon.com (AMZN) and Meta Platforms (META) closed up more than +1%. In addition, Apple (AAPL) closed up +0.97% and Microsoft (MSFT) closed up +0.60%.
Rare earth stocks surged on Monday as fresh tensions between China and the US over China's exports of the minerals are boosting alternative suppliers. As a result, Critical Metals (CRML) closed up more than +53%, MP Materials (MP) closed up more than +21%, and Ramaco Resources (METC) closed up more than +11%.
Mining stocks moved higher on Monday, as the price of gold rose more than +3% to an all-time high and silver prices jumped more than +6% to a record high. As a result, Coeur Mining (CDE) closed up more than +8%. Also, Newmont (NEM closed up more than +5%, Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) closed up more than +4%, and Anglogold Ashanti Plc (AU) closed up more than +3%.
Estee Lauder (EL) closed up more than +5% after Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $115.
Ciena Corp (CIEN) closed up more than +5% after BNP Paribas Exane upgraded the stock to outperform from neutral with a price target of $185.
Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) closed up more than +4% after rejecting Paramount Skydance Corp's initial takeover offer as too low.
Stubhub Holdings (STUB) closed up more than +3% after Wedbush initiated coverage on the stock with a recommendation of outperform and a price target of $25.
Tvardi Therapeutics (TVRD) closed down sharply by more than -83% after a Phase 2 trial of its TI-101 to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis failed to meet its goals.
Fastenal (FAST) closed down more than -7% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q3 EPS of 29 cents, below the consensus of 30 cents.
US casino stocks with exposure to Macau are sliding today after Macau industry data showed gaming revenue for the Golden Week holiday was down -5% y/y. As a result, Las Vegas Sands (LVS) and Wynn Resorts Ltd (WYNN) closed down more than -6%.
Defensive food producers and beverage makers declined on Monday, following a broader market rebound. J M Smucker (SJM) and Monster Beverage (MNST) closed down more than -3%. Also, General Mills (GIS) and Conagra Brands (CAG) closed down more than -2%. In addition, Hershey (HSY), the Campbell's Company (CPB), and McCormick & Co. (MKC) closed down more than -1%.
Baldwin Insurance Group (BWIN) closed down more than -5% after BMO Capital Markets downgraded the stock to market perform from outperform.
PayPal Holdings (PYPL) closed down more than -1% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to sell form neutral with a price target of $70.

Estee Lauder (EL) is up more than +4% after Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $115.
Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) is up more than +4% after rejecting Paramount Skydance Corp’s initial takeover offer as too low.
Ciena Corp (CIEN) is up more than +4% after BNP Paribas Exane upgraded the stock to outperform from neutral with a price target of $185.
Stubhub Holdings (STUB) is up more than +4% after Wedbush initiated coverage on the stock with a recommendation of outperform and a price target of $25.
Tvardi Therapeutics (TVRD) is down sharply by more than -84% after a Phase 2 trial of its TI-101 to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis failed to meet its goals.
Fastenal (FAST) is down more than -6% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q3 EPS of 29 cents, below the consensus of 30 cents.
US casino stocks with exposure to Macau are sliding today after Macau industry data showed gaming revenue for the Golden Week holiday was down -5% y/y. As a result, Las Vegas Sands (LVS) is down more than -5% and Wynn Resorts Ltd (WYNN) is down more than -4%.
Defensive food producers and beverage makers are declining today as the broader market rebounds. Hershey (HSY), Conagra Brands (CAG), J M Smucker (SJM), and Monster Beverage (MNST) are down more than -2%.
PayPal Holdings (PYPL) is down more than -2% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to sell form neutral with a price target of $70.
