That's a favorable precedent, but it's not a guarantee of success across all sectors. Before getting into the holiday spirit, investors may want to review the exchange-traded funds (ETFs) they own for potential issues in December.

The Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEMKT: XLF), the largest ETF in its category, could prove to be a risky sector fund to own as December progresses. Let's examine why.
"X" may not mark the spot for this SPDR ETF this month
It is worth noting that while this sector ETF may subject investors to more risk later this month, it has increased by nearly 3% on a month-to-date basis, and December weakness isn't the norm for this fund. To be fair, the ETF averaged a December gain of 1.47% since 2010.
The ETF's recent strength and its December track record support the notion that a bear market is unlikely, nor is the specter of more risk an invitation to short this fund. All that said, some cautionary warnings are necessary when discussing this SPDR ETF.
First, U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB) and Moody's (NYSE: MCO) -- two of this ETF's holdings -- often retreat in the second half of December. Over the past decade, these two have been among the worst-performing members of the S&P 500, regardless of sector, in the latter half of December.
Second, the Federal Reserve just lowered interest rates for a third time. While that's viewed as positive for the broader markets, lower interest rates mean banks are lending at lower rates, and the returns insurance providers generate on collected premiums are pinched. Those are credible risks to this ETF because the fund devotes more than 40% of its roster to bank and insurance stocks.
Third, if consumers rein in holiday spending, this ETF could be pinched. When shoppers feel confident about the economy, they tend to splurge in December, potentially accumulating credit card debt along the way. That isn't good for consumers, but it's positive for this ETF because four of the top five U.S. credit card issuers are among its 10 top holdings. If shoppers don't ring the register this month, that could create some near-term risk for this fund.
Berkshire Hathaway is a wildcard
Confirming this ETF's status as a value fund, Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.B) (NYSE: BRK.A) is its largest holding, commanding 11.6% of its weight. That has hampered the ETF's performance this year, as shares of the conglomerate are only 9.21% higher.
With CEO Warren Buffett retiring, changes are afoot at Berkshire. Earlier this week, investment manager and GEICO CEO Todd Combs left the company, one of several pieces in a broader leadership reshuffling.
With Buffett's retirement well telegraphed, changes were expected at Berkshire, and the stock isn't one to bet against over the long term, but if more high-ranking executives depart this month, it could present this sector ETF with added December headwinds.

A beaten-up pharmaceutical giant, as well as two world-class businesses within the financial services market sector, stand out as top dividend stocks to buy in November.
Here is a quick rundown on each opportunity.
1. Novo Nordisk
It can be hard to believe that Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO), the company behind highly popular GLP-1 agonist weight-loss and diabetes drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, would have done so poorly. But here we are; the stock has plunged nearly 70% from its all-time high. The Danish pharmaceutical company, which specializes in treatments for diabetes and obesity, has gotten its butt kicked by competition.
Not only has arch-rival Eli Lilly taken market share from Novo Nordisk, but the company has also felt pressure from compounding pharmacies that sprang up during drug shortages and never really went away. The selling appears overdone. Shares trade at under 14 times 2025 earnings estimates, and the dividend yield is approaching an all-time high at 3.6%.
Novo Nordisk should have plenty of growth opportunities in the obesity drug market, which could swell to $150 billion over the next decade. The company also changed out its CEO earlier this year, and the new CEO has been more aggressive in strategic acquisitions and sales strategies to push back against the competition. Novo Nordisk's steep decline might look like an obvious buying opportunity in hindsight.
2. Moody's
The global economy relies on debt. Moody's Corporation (NYSE: MCO) is one of the leading authorities in that space. The company sells financial data and research, and is one of the two primary agencies that rate bonds. The company has been in business for over a century, so it enjoys a powerful reputation. The Moody's brand name makes it difficult for competitors to challenge its business.
Moody's business is built on its data and other intangible assets. Therefore, the company is highly profitable. Companies and governments borrow constantly, so Moody's business is also relatively steady. The company has paid and raised its dividend for 15 consecutive years. The dividend payout ratio is only a quarter of 2025 earnings estimates, leaving plenty of room for future increases.
The stock's not a bargain, but fantastic companies rarely come cheap. However, shares do seem reasonably priced at the moment. The stock's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 32 against 2025 estimates isn't a bad valuation for a business that analysts estimate will grow by 11% to 12% annually over the next three to five years.
3. Mastercard
The global shift from cash to debit and credit card payments has been a long and powerful tailwind for Mastercard (NYSE: MA) and the other leading payment network companies. Mastercard has consistently grown and maintained healthy profit margins, generating billions of dollars in cash flow annually. As a result, Mastercard has paid and raised its dividend for 14 consecutive years.
Mastercard's business is like a toll. It charges fees on each transaction that goes through its network. While that may mean Mastercard's business could fluctuate with the economy, potentially slowing during a recession as people spend less, the percentage-based fee structure means that fees rise with inflation. That builds long-term growth into Mastercard's business as prices and transaction values increase.
The stock currently trades at more than 32 times 2025 earnings estimates. While that's not cheap, it's another example of an excellent business trading at a fair price. Mastercard is a cash-flow machine with solid growth ahead. Analysts see Mastercard growing earnings at an annualized rate of 15% over the next three to five years. That's enough growth to justify buying this proven winner at these levels.

3 Top Dividend Stocks to Buy in November

A month has gone by since the last earnings report for Moody's (MCO). Shares have lost about 1% in that time frame, outperforming the S&P 500.
Will the recent negative trend continue leading up to its next earnings release, or is Moody's due for a breakout? Well, first let's take a quick look at the latest earnings report in order to get a better handle on the recent catalysts for Moody's Corporation before we dive into how investors and analysts have reacted as of late.
Moody's Q3 Earnings Beat Estimates on Y/Y Revenue Growth
Moody's reported third-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings of $3.92 per share, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.70. The bottom line grew 22.1% from the year-ago quarter.
The results were primarily aided by an improvement in revenues. Steady demand for analytics and robust performance of the Moody’s Investors Service segment supported the results. The company’s liquidity position was strong in the quarter. However, an increase in operating expenses posed a headwind.
After considering certain non-recurring items, net income attributable to Moody's was $646 million or $3.60 per share, up from $534 million or $2.93 per share in the prior-year quarter.
Revenues Improve, Costs Rise
Revenues were $2.01 billion, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.96 billion. Also, the top line rose 10.7% year over year.
Total expenses were $1.09 billion, up 1.4% year over year.
Adjusted operating income of $1.06 billion rose 22.5% year over year. The adjusted operating margin was 52.9%, rising from 47.8% a year ago.
Segment Performance Strong
Moody’s Investors Service revenues increased 11.8% year over year to $1.10 billion. The rise was driven by strength in Corporate Finance, Financial Institutions, Structured Finance, and Public, Project and Infrastructure Finance revenues.
Moody’s Analytics revenues rose 9.4% year over year to $909 million. The rise was driven by 11% growth in Decision Solutions, a 7% rise in Research and Insights, and a 9% rise in Data & Information.
Balance Sheet Solid
As of Sept. 30, 2025, Moody’s had total cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of $2.26 billion, down from $2.97 billion as of Dec. 31, 2024.
The company had $7 billion in outstanding debt and $1.25 billion in additional borrowing capacity under the revolving credit facility.
In the quarter, Moody’s repurchased 1 million shares at an average price of $503.66.
As of Sept. 30, 2025, $398 million of share repurchase authorization was available.
2025 Guidance
Moody’s expects adjusted earnings of $14.50-$14.75 per share, changed from the prior target of $13.50-$14.00.
On a GAAP basis, earnings are projected to be $13.15-$13.40 per share, changed from the earlier mentioned $12.25-$12.75.
Moody’s projects revenues to increase in the high-single-digit percent range, changed from the previous range of mid-single-digit.
Net interest expenses are estimated to be $215-$225 million, changed from the prior range of $220-$240 million.
The adjusted operating margin is expected to be 51%, changed from the previously mentioned 49-50%. The operating margin is likely to be 43-44%, changed from the prior outlook of 42-43%.
Moody’s expects the cash flow from operations to be $2.85 billion, changed from the previously mentioned $2.65-$2.85 billion. The free cash flow is projected to be $2.50 billion, up from the previously stated $2.30-$2.50 billion.
The effective tax rate is projected to be 22-23%, changed from the previously mentioned 23-25%.
MIS segment revenues are expected to increase in the high-single-digit range, changed from the previous guidance of low to mid-single-digit range. The adjusted operating margin is expected to be 63-64%, up from the previously mentioned 61-62%.
Coming to the MA segment, Moody’s anticipates an adjusted operating margin of 33%, changed from the previously stated 32-33%.
Medium-Term Targets (Base Year: 2022 and to be Achieved by 2027-end)
Total revenues are projected to rise in the range of high-single to low-double-digit.
Adjusted operating margin is expected to be in the low-50s% range.
Adjusted earnings are expected to grow in the low-to-mid-teens percentage range.
Further, MIS and MS segment revenues are anticipated to jump in the range of high-single to low-double-digit percentages.
Additionally, in December 2024, Moody’s CEO approved a Strategic and Operational Efficiency Restructuring Program aimed at improving efficiency and focusing on growth areas. The initiative is expected to generate annual savings of $250–$300 million by consolidating functions, reducing staff, exiting leased office spaces and retiring legacy software. The program involves $170–$200 million in pre-tax personnel-related restructuring charges and an additional $30–$50 million in non-cash charges. It is projected to strengthen operating margins and support strategic investments, with substantial completion by the end of 2026 and related cash outlays continuing through 2027.
How Have Estimates Been Moving Since Then?
Since the earnings release, investors have witnessed a upward trend in fresh estimates.
