The Invesco S&P SmallCap Quality ETF is seeing unusually high volume in afternoon trading Tuesday, with over 355,000 shares traded versus three month average volume of about 37,000. Shares of XSHQ were up about 2.5% on the day.
Components of that ETF with the highest volume on Tuesday were U.S. Silica Holdings, trading up about 0.2% with over 1.5 million shares changing hands so far this session, and American Eagle Outfitters, up about 2.8% on volume of over 905,000 shares. Monro is the component faring the best Tuesday, higher by about 6.4% on the day, while Powell Industries is lagging other components of the Invesco S&P SmallCap Quality ETF, trading lower by about 3.5%.

Alphabet (GOOGL) came out with quarterly earnings of $9.11 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.88 per share. This compares to earnings of $2.31 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.
This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of +216.32%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this internet search leader would post earnings of $2.64 per share when it actually produced earnings of $5.11, delivering a surprise of +93.56%.
Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates four times.
Alphabet, which belongs to the Zacks Internet - Services industry, posted revenues of $103.62 billion for the quarter ended June 2026, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.31%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $81.72 billion. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates four times over the last four quarters.
The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.
Alphabet shares have added about 10.9% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's gain of 9.7%.

(RTTNews) - Tuesday, Lyft, Inc. (LYFT) announced the appointment of Senthil Padmanabhan as Chief Technology Officer, effective July 20, 2026.
Most recently, Padmanabhan served as VP of Engineering at eBay, where he first earned recognition as a Technical Fellow.
At Lyft, he is expected to lead the engineering foundations that power everything the company builds and unlock the company's technical potential.
"My job is to make sure the Lyft ceiling keeps rising - using technology to multiply what we can achieve and unlock what wasn't possible before," Padmanabhan commented.
Currently, LYFT is trading at $15.48, up 0.62 percent on the Nasdaq.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?
DoorDash dominates the food delivery market and now delivers grocery and retail items. Lyft focuses on ride-sharing. Though they serve different customer needs, both have benefited from the growing demand for app-based services and rely on the gig economy. So, which stock is the better buy in 2026?
DoorDash has established itself as the clear leader in U.S. food delivery, to the point where its name has begun to be used as a verb: “Let’s DoorDash dinner tonight.” It does have competition in that space, though, including Uber Eats and Grubhub. It’s been expanding into the delivery of other retail items, including grocery and convenience store offerings. It has a large customer base, an extensive logistics network, and has consistently delivered strong revenue growth. But that growth is reflected in its high valuation.
Lyft remains much smaller than its main competitor, Uber. It has formed strategic partnerships with airlines, hotels, credit cards, and other companies to offer discounts and credits. Its smaller scale limits its pricing power, which is a competitive disadvantage. But it has consistently generated positive free cash flow. Also, its valuation is much lower than that of many comparable businesses. The impact of self-driving vehicles on the ride-sharing industry remains to be seen.
Between these two companies, I would choose DoorDash. I think its higher valuation is justified, considering its prospects for expansion and long-term growth.

DoorDash vs. Lyft: Which Stock Is a Better Buy in 2026?

Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) went public on June 12, and investors have now had more than a week to digest the biggest public offering in history.
Fueled by a limited float, a massive push by Wall Street bigwigs, and the mystique of Founder and CEO Elon Musk, SpaceX soared out of the gate, gaining in its first four sessions to peak at $225.64 a share on June 16, a gain of 67% from its $135 listing price.

The surge out of the gate is typical for high-profile IPOs. Figma, the design software stock, jumped more than 300% in its first two days after its IPO last July, and Cerebras Systems more than doubled from its IPO on its opening day.
Both of those stocks have since fallen sharply from their previous peaks.
After reaching its all-time high on June 16, SpaceX declined over the next two market sessions and was trading lower on Monday morning, down 10.7% as of 1:32 p.m. ET. As the chart shows below, the trendline in SpaceX looks clear following the stock's peak on June 16.
What history says about IPO surges
IPO stock surges tend to be fueled by hype, and that seems to be the case with SpaceX. The offering got a ton of attention in the media leading up to it, and the limited number of available shares helped fuel the pop in the stock after it started trading.
However, a surge in the days following an IPO is a generally bearish signal for its performance over the next one to three years.
According to data compiled by University of Florida finance professor Jay Ritter, the average first-day gain from offering price to closing is about 19%, which matches the 19.2% gain SpaceX recorded on its first day.
Using a data set from 1980 to 2024 that covers close to 9,300 U.S.-listed IPOs, Ritter found that the average IPO stock was 21% lower than what a value-weighted market index would have returned, after three years from its closing price on its first trading day. However, the performance was worse for smaller companies with annual revenue of less than $100 million. For companies with annual revenue of more than $500 million, like SpaceX, they underperformed by an average of 5% after gaining 10% after their first trading day.
Other high-profile IPOs that have surged only to plunge after the hype include Rivian and Lyft. Others like Meta Platforms and Uber lost more than 50% after going public and didn't get the opening pop that other IPOs did. Airbnb also surged in its IPO and has since been a disappointment.
There are few examples of big IPOs that have jumped out of the gate and continued to steadily gain.
What it means for SpaceX stock
SpaceX is now down more than 25% from its peak on June 16, meaning the top on the stock is almost certainly in. On average, IPO stocks bottom out three to six months after they go public, though many IPOs underperform through the first three years they are public.
SpaceX was already expensive based on its IPO price, and is now trading at more than 100 times trailing sales.
In addition to the typical post-IPO hype cycle, SpaceX stock is likely to face pressure as its staggered lock-up periods begin to expire, and insiders get a chance to sell the stock.
That selling will come in several stages, starting with its second-quarter earnings report, which is expected to be in August.
The question for investors now is how low the stock will go before it bottoms out. That will depend on how insiders handle the lockup expiration, any subsequent news out on the company, and broader market sentiment.
However, with a market cap already above $2 trillion, the upside for SpaceX seems limited at this point. The stock could easily sink below its IPO price, given the huge expectations baked into the stock price at this point. In the coming weeks, a continued decline seems much more likely than further gains.

The current ratio is approximately 0.5x, indicating the company has more current assets than current liabilities to cover short-term obligations. Which stock would I buy in 2026?
Uber and Lyft revolutionized the taxi industry when they rolled out their ride-sharing networks, allowing anyone with a car to earn a side gig. Both the industry and the companies have come a long way.
Uber Technologies is by far the larger of the two in terms of revenue. Wall Street expects Uber’s sales to increase $6 billion from last year to $58 billion this year, bringing with it net income of $ 6.1 billion. But in a sign of the expenses Uber faces in expanding its business model, that would be roughly $4 billion less income than in 2025. In the long run, its global ride-sharing, delivery, and autonomous solutions business will make for a strong business.
Lyft is far smaller, with revenue roughly one-eighth of Uber’s last year. But a smaller base allows for faster growth, as seen in the 16% expected rise in Lyft revenue this year to about $7.3 billion (Uber’s sales growth rate for this year is still respectable at 11.5%). Yet Lyft’s net income is also expected to decline this year, from $2.8 billion to perhaps $230 million. Clearly, each business is spending heavily to expand its offerings.
Weighing each, Uber gets the nod due to its much larger scale, which, as we have seen in tech, is increasingly important. Uber’s scale comes at a premium relative to Lyft, price-to-earnings, and price-to-sales-wise, but for 2026, it appears to be worth it.

Lyft vs. Uber Technologies: Which Ride Sharing Stock Is a Better Buy in 2026?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Monday closed up +1.65%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.92%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +3.06%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) rose +1.68%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) rose +3.06%.
Stock indexes settled sharply higher on Monday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting 1-week highs, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average hitting a new record high. Crude oil prices and global bond yields tumbled on Monday, sparking risk-on sentiment and boosting equity markets after the US and Iran agreed to end their war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump said the Strait of Hormuz will reopen after the signing of the peace deal on Friday in Switzerland, which will trigger the start of 60 days of talks on Iran's nuclear program. However, if an agreement isn't reached on nuclear, the US could restart military attacks.

Gains in technology stocks led the overall market higher on Monday. Also, airline stocks rose as the slump in crude oil lowers fuel costs, and metal prices and mining stocks rallied as the drop in oil prices is dovish for the world’s central banks.
On the downside, falling crude prices weighed on energy producers. Also, Monday’s weaker-than-expected US economic reports on the June Empire manufacturing survey, May manufacturing production, and the June NAHB housing market index were bearish for stocks.
The US Jun Empire manufacturing survey of general business conditions fell -13.9 to 5.7, weaker than expectations of 13.7.
US May manufacturing production was unchanged m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.3% m/m.
The US Jun NAHB housing market index unexpectedly fell -2 to 35, weaker than expectations of no change at 37.
WTI crude oil prices (CLN26) fell more than -4% on Monday to a 3-month low on news of the end of the US-Iran war and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The plunge in oil prices has eased inflation expectations and lowered global bond yields. The 10-year T-note yield dropped to a 1-month low of 4.42% on Monday.
The markets are discounting a 4% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Monday. The Euro Stoxx 50 rose to a new record high and closed up +0.68%. China's Shanghai Composite climbed to a 1.5-week high and closed up +1.61%. Japan’s Nikkei-225 Stock Average surged to a new all-time high and closed up +4.99%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Monday closed up +4.5 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield fell -1.6 bp to 4.463%. Sep T-notes rallied to a 1-month high on Monday, and the 10-year T-note yield dropped to a 1-month low of 4.418%. Monday’s -4% plunge in WTI crude oil to a 3-month low lowered inflation expectations and is bullish for T-notes. Also, Monday’s weaker-than-expected US economic reports were supportive for T-notes. Gains in T-notes were limited as Monday’s sharp stock market rally dampened safe-haven demand for government debt securities.
European government bond yields moved lower on Monday. The 10-year German bund yield tumbled to a 2-week low of 2.944% and finished down -4.1 bp to 2.954%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 1.75-month low of 4.767% and finished down -2.4 bp to 4.812%.
Eurozone Apr industrial production rose +0.1% m/m, right on expectations.
ECB Governing Council member Martins Kazaks said, "The ECB raised the inflation forecast quite significantly, but the risks in my view are still on the upside for inflation," so the ECB is ready to take further action to stop the rise in energy prices from spreading to the rest of the economy.
Swaps are discounting an 18% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on July 23.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks rose on Monday, helping support gains in the broader market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose more than +5% on Monday to a new record high. Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +15% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +11%. Also, Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +10%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed up more than +8%. In addition, ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed up more than +7%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Lam Research (LRCX) closed up more than +6%. Finally, SanDisk (SNDK) and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed up more than +5%, and Qualcomm (QCOM) and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed up more than +4%.
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks rallied on Monday as the end of the US-Iran war has sparked risk-on sentiment in asset markets. Meta Platforms (META) closed up more than +4%, and Amazon.com (AMZN) and Nvidia (NVDA) closed up more than +3%. Also, Alphabet (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT) closed up more than +2%, and Apple (AAPL) closed up more than +1%. In addition, Tesla (TSLA) closed up +0.74%.
Airline stocks and cruise line operators are rallying today as the -5% plunge in WTI crude lowers fuel costs and boosts the profitability prospects for the companies. Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) closed up more than +6%, and United Airlines Holdings (UAL), Carnival (CCL), Alaska Air Group (ALK), Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), and American Airlines Group (AAL) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV) closed up more than +1%.
Mining stocks moved higher on Monday as gold, silver, and copper prices rallied sharply. Coeur Mining (CDE) and Hecla Mining (HL) closed up more than +8%, and Anglogold Ashanti (AU) closed up more than +6%. Also, Newmont Corp (NEM) closed up more than +5%, and Barrick Mining (B) closed up more than +4%. In addition, Freeport McMoRan (FCX) closed up more than +2%, and Southern Copper (SCCO) closed up more than +1%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks gained on Monday as the price of Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) rose more than +4% to a 1.5-week high. Coinbase Global (COIN) closed up more than +6%, and Strategy (MSTR) closed up more than +5%. Also, MARA Holdings (MARA) closed up more than +3%, and. Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed up more than +2%.
Delivery and rideshare service stocks settled higher on Monday as gasoline prices tumbled to a 2-month low. DoorDash (DASH) closed up more than +11%, and Uber Technologies (UBER) and Lyft (LYFT) closed up by more than +5%. Also, Grab Holdings Ltd (GRAB) closed up by more than +4%, and Maplebear (CART) closed up by more than +2%.
Energy stocks and service providers retreated on Monday as WTI crude oil fell more than -4% to a 3-month low. APA Corp (APA) closed down more than -6%, and Marathon Petroleum (MPC), SLB Ltd (SLB), Exxon Mobil (XOM), ConocoPhillips (COP), and Valero Energy (VLO) closed down more than -4%. Also, Chevron (CVX) closed down more than -3% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials, and Phillips 66 (PSX), Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Haliburton (HAL), and Devon Energy (DVN) closed down more than -3%.
Space Exploration Technologies (SPCX) closed up more than +19% on positive carryover from its record $75 billion initial public offering (IPO) late last week, which was more than four times oversubscribed, indicating strong demand for the stock.
Datadog (DDOG) closed up more than +1% after Truist Securities upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $300.
Hawkeye 360 Inc (HAWK) closed up more than +5% after Jeffries upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $34.
Elicio Therapeutics (ELTX) closed down more than -72% after it said its Phase 2 study of its vaccine to treat patients with pancreatic cancer did not meet the pre-specified primary endpoint.
Fox Corp (FOXA) closed down more than -16% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after paying $22 billion to acquire Roku.
Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) closed down more than -3% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after Citigroup downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $228.

Stocks Settle Sharply Higher as US-Iran Peace Deal Spurs Optimism

This year is shaping up to be a historic in terms of companies going public. Artificial intelligence (AI) start-ups Anthropic and OpenAI plan their initial public offerings (IPOs) this year, but unquestionably, the biggest debut is expected to be SpaceX. The company is looking to raise $75 billion in its offering, which will dwarf previous records by a wide margin.
The hype machine is ramping up at dizzying proportions, and that's understandable. The chance to get in on the ground floor and ride the rocket maker to new heights is certainly a tempting proposition. So, should investors buy SpaceX on IPO day? Let's see what lessons we can glean from history.

Ready for launch
Before we address the question at hand, it's worth looking at what the SpaceX offering will entail and what investors will get for their money.
In the company's latest S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (aka SpaceX) revealed it will offer 555,555,555 shares of Class A common stock at an IPO price of $135 per share, raising roughly $75 billion and valuing the company at $1.77 trillion. The stock will be listed on the Nasdaq exchange using the symbol "SPCX."
SpaceX has three distinct business segments: rocket launch, satellite internet, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The most high-profile of the three is the rocket launch business, which has launched roughly 650 Falcon rockets with a 99% success rate. It also pioneered "reusable" rockets, making space travel more cost-effective.
The company also boasts the largest network of broadband and mobile satellites in Low-Earth orbit, with approximately 9,600 Starlink satellites, delivering service to millions of customers in 164 countries.
Last but not least is the company's AI segment, including Grok AI, thanks to the recent merger with xAI. SpaceX has ambitious plans to build and launch solar-powered orbital data centers, which it believes will offer "far greater scale and efficiency than terrestrial alternatives."
Late last week, SpaceX revealed in a regulatory filing that it had reached a deal with Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), under which the Google-parent will pay $920 million per month between Oct. 2026 and June 2029 for compute capacity, for a deal valued at $30 billion. This comes on the heels of a similar deal reached with Anthropic, which is paying SpaceX $1.25 billion per month.
The company's financial results are intriguing. In 2025, SpaceX generated revenue of $18.7 billion, up 33% year over year, but recorded a net loss of $4.9 billion under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). On an adjusted basis, the company's results look more appealing, with adjusted EBITDA of $6.6 billion, though this ignores stock-based compensation, depreciation, and amortization, among other very real business expenses.
These financials don't include the recently inked agreements, which will no doubt improve its financial position.
What history says
While there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the SpaceX IPO, a look at history can be instructional, as the past is rife with examples of stocks that fell significantly in the wake of their public offerings.
Sam Grelck, equity strategy analyst at Truist, reviewed data from the 30 biggest IPOs of the past 15 years, and his findings are telling. More than half of these stocks were underwater after the first week, and also at 12 months post-IPO, with 17 of 30 stocks in the red. The best-performing stock in the group was Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR), which was up 153% after the first year but shed 53% of its value at one point during the year. Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) had the worst track record, losing 74% in the first year, after falling as much as 90%. The full data is illustrated in the chart below.
In nearly every case, the first year was a rocky one for these newly listed companies, which serves as a stark reminder for investors. Recently minted stocks can be particularly volatile, so IPO investing isn't for the faint of heart.
A couple of other caveats for thoughtful investors. While the offering price is $135 per share, retail investors may not be able to get that price. The hype ahead of the SpaceX launch has reached a fever pitch, which could drive the stock price up from the moment it begins trading, causing investors to pay a much higher price.
Furthermore, while investors will be able to own SpaceX stock, make no mistake about who will be in control. Founder and CEO Elon Musk will control 82% of the company's voting power, leaving retail investors with little say in matters requiring shareholder approval.
Last, but certainly not least, if SpaceX achieves its $1.77 trillion valuation, the stock would be selling for roughly 95 times sales, a premium valuation to be sure.
For investors who are still determined to buy the SpaceX IPO, it should be a small part of a well-balanced portfolio. It may also be worth waiting for the inevitable stock price fall to buy at a more reasonable price.

Examining the company’s strengths, challenges, and key growth catalysts can provide insight into whether the recent decline represents a buying opportunity or calls for a more cautious approach.
Key Tailwinds for UBER Stock
Commendable Expansion Efforts: Although Uber’s core business is ride-hailing, it has steadily expanded into areas like food delivery and freight. Diversification is crucial for large companies to manage risk, and Uber has been particularly effective in doing so through acquisitions, geographic expansion, new product offerings and innovation. Its efforts to grow internationally are noteworthy, as they provide the added advantage of geographic diversification. By making strategic investments, Uber continues to broaden its services and strengthen its overall platform.
The company is also focused on boosting Uber Eats and has signed several recent agreements to support that goal. Uber Eats is the online food ordering and delivery platform of Uber. Last month, Uber and Ulta Beauty ULTA, the largest specialty beauty retailer in the United States, announced the launch of more than 1,500 Ulta Beauty stores on the Uber Eats marketplace.
Now, customers nationwide can access a wide selection of beauty and wellness products, including makeup, skincare, haircare, fragrances, tools, devices and other essentials, through on-demand or scheduled delivery. The collaboration offers shoppers a convenient way to purchase gifts or replenish everyday products.
The inclusion of Ulta Beauty further expands Uber Eats’ beauty and retail offerings by providing customers with products across multiple categories and price ranges. Consumers can now explore thousands of items from more than 600 brands available through Ulta Beauty, all accessible via the Uber Eats app with same-day delivery options.
Gross Bookings Growth: Uber continues to benefit from strong growth in gross bookings, driven by steady demand across its platform. The company has been recording solid double-digit growth in gross bookings across both its mobility and delivery businesses.
Despite the crisis in the Middle East, gross bookings from UBER’s Mobility business were highly impressive, aiding the first-quarter 2026 results. Gross bookings from the Mobility segment in the March quarter increased 20% year over year on a constant-currency basis to $26.4 billion. Gross bookings from the Delivery segment in the first quarter rose 23% year over year on a constant-currency basis to $26 billion. Total gross bookings jumped 25% to $53.7 billion.
The gross bookings forecast for the second quarter of 2026 is also very impressive, highlighting the bullishness surrounding the key metric. Despite the ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the resultant fuel price spike, gross bookings are projected in the range of $56.25-$57.75 billion, highlighting growth of 18% to 22% year over year on a constant-currency basis. The outlook assumes a roughly 2 percentage-point currency tailwind to total reported year-over-year growth.
Continued expansion in gross bookings strengthens Uber’s revenue base, improves operating leverage across its platform and deepens network effects among riders, drivers and merchants. Gross bookings are strong at rival Lyft as well, mainly owing to the growing active rider base, expansion into new markets and the success of its customer-friendly "Price Lock" feature.
Impressive Earnings History: Uber’s earnings have outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate in three of the past four quarters (missing the mark on the other occasion). The average beat is 89.6%.

UBER Shares Cheap: The stock is undervalued compared with its industry. It is currently trading at a price-to-sales multiple of 2.37, lower than the industry levels.

Some Challenges That Cannot be Ignored
Uber’s shares have dropped primarily on concerns regarding competition in the robotaxi and autonomous driving (“AV”) space. Alphabet’s GOOGL Waymo is already operating fully driverless Level 4 systems across multiple cities at commercial scale. Waymo currently delivers more than 500,000 paid robotaxi rides weekly across multiple U.S. cities without safety monitors or chase vehicles. The increasing use of autonomous rides through Alphabet’s robotaxi unit is impacting Uber’s core business – ride-hailing.
Launched in 2009 as part of Google’s Self-Driving Car unit before being reorganized into an independent company under the Alphabet umbrella, Waymo has already started large-scale, fully driverless services in multiple U.S. cities. Its entire fleet runs without safety drivers. Lyft is also looking to be a key player in the lucrative AV space.
High operating costs are also hurting UBER stock. The anticipation of Uber continuing to incur high costs, courtesy of its AV-related investments, may have kept investors wary, contributing to the downward stock movement.
How to Play Uber Stock Now?
Although Uber's shares have underperformed recently, and it continues to face challenges from the debt load and broader macroeconomic uncertainties, the long-term growth prospects remain favorable.
A key strength lies in Uber's focus on diversification and initiatives aimed at enhancing shareholder value. In the fast-growing AV market, the company has pursued a partnership-driven approach to participate in the opportunity while minimizing risk. Collaborating with leading AV technology providers allows Uber to avoid the significant research and development expenses required to develop autonomous capabilities internally, while still advancing its position within the evolving mobility ecosystem.
Overall, Uber's global scale, strategic investments and diversified business model provide a solid foundation for sustained long-term growth. Given these strengths, retaining positions in this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock despite its recent weakness appears reasonable. However, prospective investors may find it prudent to wait for a more compelling entry point before initiating new positions.

UBER Stock Price Decreases 12% YTD: Exit Now or Stay Put?

Investors in Lyft Inc (Symbol: LYFT) saw new options begin trading today, for the December 2028 expiration. One of the key inputs that goes into the price an option buyer is willing to pay, is the time value, so with 926 days until expiration the newly trading contracts represent a potential opportunity for sellers of puts or calls to achieve a higher premium than would be available for the contracts with a closer expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the LYFT options chain for the new December 2028 contracts and identified one put and one call contract of particular interest.
The put contract at the $12.00 strike price has a current bid of $2.01. If an investor was to sell-to-open that put contract, they are committing to purchase the stock at $12.00, but will also collect the premium, putting the cost basis of the shares at $9.99 (before broker commissions). To an investor already interested in purchasing shares of LYFT, that could represent an attractive alternative to paying $13.99/share today.
Because the $12.00 strike represents an approximate 14% discount to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the put contract would expire worthless. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 77%. Turning to the calls side of the option chain, the call contract at the $20.00 strike price has a current bid of $2.81. If an investor was to purchase shares of LYFT stock at the current price level of $13.99/share, and then sell-to-open that call contract as a "covered call," they are committing to sell the stock at $20.00. Considering the call seller will also collect the premium, that would drive a total return (excluding dividends, if any) of 63.05% if the stock gets called away at the December 2028 expiration (before broker commissions). Of course, a lot of upside could potentially be left on the table if LYFT shares really soar, which is why looking at the trailing twelve month trading history for Lyft Inc, as well as studying the business fundamentals becomes important. Considering the fact that the $20.00 strike represents an approximate 43% premium to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the covered call contract would expire worthless, in which case the investor would keep both their shares of stock and the premium collected. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 41%. Should the covered call contract expire worthless, the premium would represent a 20.09% boost of extra return to the investor, or 7.92% annualized, which we refer to as the YieldBoost.
