Southwest Airlines Co. operates as a passenger airline company that provides scheduled air transportation services in the United States and near-international markets. As of December 31, 2023, the company operated a total fleet of 817 Boeing 737 aircraft; and served 121 destinations in 42 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as ten near-international countries, including Mexico, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Aruba, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Belize, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and Turks and Caicos. It also provides inflight entertainment and connectivity services on Wi-Fi enabled aircraft; and Rapid Rewards loyalty program that enables program members to earn points for dollars spent on Southwest base fares. In addition, the company offers a suite of digital platforms to support customers' travel needs, including websites and apps; and SWABIZ, an online booking tool. Further, it provides ancillary services, such as Southwest's EarlyBird Check-In, upgraded boarding, and transportation of pets and unaccompanied minors. Southwest Airlines Co. was incorporated in 1967 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

The June 5-10 year inflation expectations rate eased to +3.4% from +3.9% in May, weaker than expectations of +3.8%.
The markets are discounting a 4% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Overseas stock markets closed higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 rose +2.16%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.12%. Japan’s Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up +2.81%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) fell -5 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield rose +2.2 bp to 4.483%. T-notes saw weakness as the 10-year inflation expectations rate rose +1.8 bp to 2.323%, despite the drop in oil prices. The T-note market remains worried about inflation pressures, which are likely to remain sticky even after the Strait of Hormuz reopens. The T-note market had some carry-over weakness from Thursday, when demand was lackluster for the Treasury’s 30-year bond auction.
European government bond yields traded lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell -3.6 bp to 2.995%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -6.9 bp to 4.836%.
On Thursday, the ECB, as expected, raised the deposit facility rate by +25 bp to 2.25% from 2.00% and said, "The outlook remains uncertain, with upside risks for inflation and downside risks for economic growth." Swaps are discounting a 37% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on July 23.
US Stock Movers
Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SPCX), doing business as SpaceX, started trading Friday morning and closed the day at $161 per share, up +19% from Thursday’s IPO of $135. The IPO was more than four times oversubscribed, indicating strong demand for the stock. SpaceX's favorable showing on Friday was positive for investor sentiment and could help the upcoming IPOs of AI companies Anthropic and OpenAI.
Space-linked stocks traded lower despite the favorable SpaceX debut, with EchoStar (SATS) and Rocket Lab (RKLB) both closing down about -10%.
Chip stocks recovered from early losses and closed mostly higher. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose +1.59% on Friday, adding to Thursday’s sharp rally of +8.39%. The chip rally was sparked by signs that AI spending is continuing after Oracle on Thursday reported quarterly capital expenditures that were higher than expected, driven by increased data center spending. Chip leaders on Friday included a rally of +6.51% in Intel (INTC) and +5.55% in KLA-Tencor Corp (KLAC). AMD (AMD)and Qualcomm (QCOM) both closed up more than +4%.
Adobe (ADBE) fell more than -6% after CFO Dan Durn said he would leave the company on June 15, following news earlier this year that Adobe’s CEO would resign. The Adobe news put continued downward pressure on software stocks, which were undercut on Thursday by negative earnings news from Oracle (ORCL). Autodesk (ADSK) fell more than -3%, and Palantir Technologies (PLTR) fell more than -2%.
Airline stocks saw continued support after oil prices on Friday extended Thursday’s losses. Southwest Airlines (LUV), United Airlines (UAL), and American Airlines (AAL) all rallied by more than +2%.

September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are down -8 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield is up +3.2 bp at 4.493%. T-notes are seeing weakness today as the 10-year inflation expectations rate is up +0.7 bp at 2.313%, despite today’s drop in oil prices. The T-note market remains worried about inflation pressures, which are likely to remain sticky even after the Strait of Hormuz reopens. The T-note market has some carry-over weakness from Thursday, when demand was lackluster for the Treasury’s 30-year bond auction.
European government bond yields are trading lower. The 10-year German Bund yield is down -1.6 bp at 3.015%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -4.2 bp at 4.863%.
On Thursday, the ECB, as expected, raised the deposit facility rate by +25 bp to 2.25% from 2.00% and said, "The outlook remains uncertain, with upside risks for inflation and downside risks for economic growth." Swaps are discounting a 37% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on July 23.
US Stock Movers
Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SPCX), doing business as SpaceX, is expected to begin trading this morning after raising a record $75 billion in its IPO on Thursday. The stock is expected to open substantially above its IPO price of $135. The IPO was more than four times oversubscribed, indicating strong demand for the stock. A strong showing by SpaceX today would be positive for investor sentiment and could help the upcoming IPOs for AI companies Anthropic and OpenAI.
Space-linked stocks are trading lower despite the SpaceX debut, with EchoStar (SATS) down more than -6%, and Rocket Lab (RKLB) down more than -5%.
Chip stocks are trading mostly lower today after Thursday’s sharp rally, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) trading slightly lower after Thursday’s rally of +8.39%. Thursday’s rally was sparked by signs that AI spending is continuing after Oracle reported quarterly capital expenditures that were higher than expected, driven by increased data center spending. Chip leaders today include AMD (AMD) and Intel (INTC), with gains of more than +3%.
Adobe (ADBE) is down more than -8% after CFO Dan Durn said he would leave the company on June 15, following news earlier this year that Adobe’s CEO would resign. The Adobe news put continued downward pressure on software stocks, which were undercut on Thursday by negative earnings news from Oracle (ORCL). ServiceNow (NOW), Atlassian (TEAM), and Workday (WDAY) are all trading down by more than -3%.
Airline stocks are seeing continued support after oil prices today moved lower, adding to Thursday’s decline. United Airlines (UAL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV) are trading up more than +0.5%.
Energy stocks and service providers are mixed despite today’s continued slump in oil prices. Baker Hughes is down more than -1%, but Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) are up more than +1%.
Astera Labs (ALAB), CoreWeave (CRWV), Nebius Group (NBIS), Rocket Lab (RKLB), and Teradyn (TER) are seeing support today after Nasdaq announced on Thursday that those stocks will join the Nasdaq 100 Index, effective at the market open on June 22. Stocks leaving the Nasdaq 100 include Charter Communications (CHTR), Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH), Insmed (INSM), Verisk Analytics (VRSK), and Zscaler (ZS).
Travelers (TRV) is down more than -1% after Barclays cut its rating on the stock to underweight from equal-weight due to a downbeat outlook for profits in the property and casualty sector.

Also, Thursday’s -2% plunge in WTI crude oil sparked a rally in airline stocks and cruise line operators. However, software stocks retreated on Thursday, led by an -8% slump in Oracle after it reported higher-than-expected capital expenses, driven by increased data spending.

Stocks raced to their highs Thursday afternoon when President Trump said he canceled planned military strikes against Iran, citing "discussions" with Iranian leadership. He added that a "time and place of the signing" of a negotiated end to the war would "be announced shortly," and the US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz "will remain in full force and effect until this transaction is finalized."
Stocks were initially weighed down on Thursday amid concerns about the escalation of Middle East hostilities after President Trump said the US will be hitting Iran very hard tonight and will "at some point" take control of Kharg Island, Iran's key export hub, thus taking control of Iran's oil and gas markets.
Stocks were also pressured by Thursday’s US economic reports, which showed that weekly US jobless claims unexpectedly rose to a 4-month high and that May producer prices were mixed.
Late Wednesday, President Trump said the US will continue bombing Iran if it refuses to agree to an interim peace deal. Mr. Trump ordered multiple strikes on Iranian targets on Wednesday, and Iran retaliated by firing on US bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. The increase in tensions risks derailing peace talks between Iran and the US, thus keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed, and further tightening global energy supplies.
US weekly initial unemployment claims unexpectedly rose +4,000 to a 4-month high of 229,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of a decline to 220,000.
US May PPI final demand rose +1.1% m/m and +6.5% y/y, stronger than expectations of +0.7% m/m and +6.4% y/y, with the +6.5% y/y gain being the largest year-on-year increase in 3.5 years. However, May PI ex food and energy rose +0.4% m/m and +4.9% y/y, weaker than expectations of +0.5% m/m and +5.4% y/y.
WTI crude oil prices (CLN26) are extremely volatile, whipsawing higher and lower several times on Thursday. Crude prices today initially gave up an overnight advance of more than +2% and fell more than -2% after President Trump said he canceled planned strikes on Iran and that a peace deal to end the war was imminent. Crude prices initially rallied more than +2% on Thursday when President Trump said the US would keep attacking Iran and threatened to seize the Kharg Island oil terminal, Iran’s main crude exporting hub.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Thursday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.78%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.16%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average recovered from a 2.5-week low and closed up +0.06%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Thursday closed up +17 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield fell -9.3 bp to 4.459%. T-notes rallied on Thursday after US weekly jobless claims unexpectedly rose to a 4-month high and May producer prices ex-food and energy rose less than expected, dovish factors for Fed policy. T-notes also garnered support on Thursday from the -2% fall in WTI crude oil prices, which lowered inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 2.5-month low of 2.303% on Thursday.
Gains in T-notes were limited after stocks rallied sharply, which curbed safe-haven demand for government debt securities. Also, slack demand for the Treasury’s $22 billion auction of 30-year T-bonds was negative for T-notes, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.33, below the 10-auction average of 2.39.
European government bond yields moved lower on Thursday. The 10-year German Bund yield fell from a 2.5-week high of 3.091% and finished down -4.5 bp to 3.032%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -2.6 bp to 4.905%.
The ECB, as expected, raised the deposit facility rate by +25 bp to 2.25% from 2.00% and said, "The outlook remains uncertain, with upside risks for inflation and downside risks for economic growth."
The ECB cut its 2026 Eurozone GDP estimate to +0.8% from a previous estimate of +0.9% and raised its 2026 Eurozone inflation ex-food and energy forecast to +2.5% from a previous forecast of +2.3%.
Swaps are discounting a 62% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on July 23.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks rallied sharply on Thursday amid signs that AI spending is continuing after Oracle reported quarterly capital expenditures that were higher than expected, driven by increased data center spending. Sandisk (SNDK) closed up more than +14% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed up more than +13%. Also, Lam Research (LRCX) closed up more than +12%, and Applied Materials (AMAT), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +11%. In addition, Intel (INTC) and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed up more than +9%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +7%. Also, Carnival (CCL) closed up more than +8%, and Southwest Airlines (LUV) and Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) closed up more than +7%. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) closed up more than +6%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks moved higher on Thursday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) rose more than +3%. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed up more than +10%, and Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed up more than +8%. Also, MARA Holdings (MARA) closed up more than +7%, Coinbase Global (COIN) closed up more than +4%, and Strategy (MSTR) closed up more than +3%.
Software stocks are under pressure today, limiting gains in the overall market, with Oracle (ORCL) down more than -8% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting full-year capital spending of $70 billion, $20-25 billion higher than expected due to prepayment for some components. Also, Autodesk (ADSK) closed down more than -7% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Adobe Systems (ADBE) closed down more than -6%. In addition, Workday (WDAY) closed down more than -5%, and Salesforce (CRM) closed down more than -2% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Stocks Resume Decline as Chipmakers and AI Companies Fall

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.28%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.38%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -0.28%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -0.25%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are down -0.22%.
Stock indexes are sliding today, led by weakness in technology stocks, as investors rotate out of the sector, weighing on the broader market. Also, trucking companies are under pressure today after Amazon expanded its LTL freight offering to all destinations in the US, including third-party warehouses, distribution centers, and retail partners. However, stock indexes recovered from their worst levels after US May consumer prices came in as expected, easing inflation concerns.

US May CPI rose +4.2% y/y, right on expectations and the fastest pace of increase in 3 years. May core CPI rose +2.9% y/y, right on expectations, and the fastest pace of increase in 7 months.
US MBA mortgage applications rose +10.8% in the week ended June 5, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +7.3% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +15.3%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +3 bp to 6.60% from 6.57% in the prior week.
WTI crude oil prices (CLN26) are up more than +1% today after the US and Iran exchanged strikes overnight. The US said it had completed an operation that saw fighter jets strike Iranian air defenses, ground control stations, and radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for Iran shooting down a US Apache helicopter. In response, Iran launched missiles at four US military targets and fired drones at the main US naval base in the Middle East, located in Bahrain, and struck Ali Al Salem air base in Kuwait. Losses in crude prices accelerated today when President Trump said that Iran has taken too long to make a deal and that they will now have to “pay the price,” fueling concerns that the US may escalate military attacks on Iran.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and is down -0.34%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.42%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average closed down -1.89%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are down -2 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield is up +0.6 bp to 4.523%. T-notes are under pressure today after a +1% jump in WTI crude oil, which has raised inflation expectations. Supply pressures are also weighing on T-note prices as the Treasury will auction $39 billion of 10-year T-notes later today.
Today’s stock weakness has boosted some safe-haven demand for government debt securities and is limiting losses in T-notes. Also, today’s as-expected US May CPI report limited the downside in T-notes.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German Bund yield climbed to a 2.5-week high of 3.088% and is up +2.7 bp to 3.070%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +2.1 bp to 4.924%.
Swaps are discounting a 100% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.

3 Airline Stocks to Watch Amid IATA's Subdued 2026 Profit Forecast
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has sharply reduced its profit outlook for the global airline industry in 2026, citing a surge in oil prices triggered by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The industry body warned that higher fuel costs are expected to weigh heavily on airline earnings. Fuel remains one of the largest operating expenses for carriers, making airlines particularly vulnerable to disruptions in global energy markets.
IATA noted that passenger demand remains relatively resilient. Moreover, airlines may attempt to pass some of the additional fuel costs on to consumers through higher ticket prices, but competitive pressures and concerns about weakening consumer spending could limit their ability to do so.
As a result, many carriers are expected to face increased financial strain despite continued growth in air travel demand. Given this backdrop, we believe that investors would do well to keep an eye on airline stocks like Southwest Airlines, American Airlines and SkyWest.
Surge in Fuel Costs: A Bane for Airlines' Bottom Line
The fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States has revived uncertainty in financial markets. Crude oil prices have experienced significant swings in response to developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping corridor.
Oil has continued to trade at elevated levels, moving within the $90–$95 per barrel range amid concerns about rising inflationary pressures. High fuel costs are naturally hurting the bottom line of airlines. This is because fuel expenses represent a key input cost for airlines.
IATA's Revised Forecast for 2026
Due to high fuel costs, IATA nearly halved its profitability projection for 2026. Per IATA, airlines are projected to earn a combined net profit of $23 billion this year, down from an estimated $45 billion in 2025 and well below an earlier forecast of $41 billion for 2026. The industry's net profit margin is expected to shrink to 2% from 4.2% last year. The earlier projection for the 2026 net profit margin was 3.9%.
Passenger ticket revenues are, however, expected to remain strong and drive 9.4% year-over-year growth in industry revenues to $1.17 trillion. Per IATA, passenger revenues in 2026 are anticipated to be $839 billion (up 9.2% year over year), which is nearly 72% of total revenues. The increasing ticket prices are likely to cover the substantial increase in airlines' key input costs. Airlines are also relying on capacity discipline-related measures, like discontinuing unprofitable flights and consolidating routes to counter the high fuel costs.
Ancillary revenues are expected to be $165 billion. Per IATA, 5.1 billion people are likely to take to the skies in 2026, up 2.4% year over year. Cargo revenues in 2026 are expected to be $162 billion, representing a 7.2% year-over-year increase. Cargo volumes in 2026 are expected to reach 71.7 million tonnes in 2026, up marginally from year-ago levels.
Despite the top-line improvement, revenue growth is expected to lag operating expense growth of 13% to $1.12 trillion. Fuel costs are expected to rise by nearly 40% from $252 billion in 2025 to $350 billion in 2026. The average price of crude oil is anticipated at $95/barrel (Brent) for the year (up 37% from $69 in 2025). Non-fuel costs are expected to rise 4% to $767 billion, driven by a 4% uptick in labor costs. The shortage of renewal aircraft, too, has put a strain on the cost picture. Passenger load factor (% of seats filled by passengers) is expected to touch a record 84% during the year.
On a region-wise basis, North American carriers are expected to reap net profits of $9.4 billion in 2026, down from $12.4 billion in 2025. With most U.S. carriers having abandoned fuel hedging strategies, such an oil supply disruption has left them fully exposed to price spikes.
European carriers are expected to reap net profits of $9.6 billion, despite being highly dependent on Gulf imports for jet fuel. The profitability of carriers in regions like Latin America, the Middle East and the Asia Pacific is likely to decline in 2026 from the year-ago levels, mainly due to the jet fuel crisis.
The updated profitability forecast for 2026 highlights the industry's continued exposure to geopolitical risks and commodity price volatility. Until tensions in the Middle East ease and fuel prices moderate, airlines are likely to focus on cost-control measures, fuel-efficiency initiatives, and capacity adjustments to protect earnings in an increasingly uncertain operating environment.
3 Airline Stocks to Keep a Tab On
Despite the oil price volatility, air-travel demand remains upbeat. As a result, investors interested in the Zacks Transportation - Airline industry would do well to keep airline stocks on their radar for healthy gains.
Our Choices
Southwest Airlines is benefiting from its lean cost structure, expanding operations and strategic partnerships. Efforts to reward its shareholders also bode well. LUV no longer aggressively follows the practice of fuel hedging, having discontinued the practice. However, the low-cost carrier still has some hedging contracts.
LUV has a decent earnings surprise history. The company's earnings outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate in two of the trailing four quarters, missed on one occasion and came in line in the other quarter, delivering an average surprise of 247%. AmericanAirlines expects record travel during the ongoing summer season (May 21-Sept. 8, 2026). During the period, the airline expects to fly a record 75 million passengers across 750,000 flights.
American Airlines' shares have gained 6.3% over the past month. The carrier's earnings have surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate in three of the last four quarters and missed the mark once. The average earnings beat was 2.6%. American Airlines currently carries a Zacks Rank #3.
SkyWest is benefiting from strong air travel demand, despite the macroeconomic tensions, and its associated fleet modernization initiatives. A solid balance sheet enables the regional carrier to reward shareholders with share repurchases consistently. SKYW currently carries a Zacks Rank #3
SkyWest is based in St. George, UT. Its resilient business model, whereby the carrier has capacity purchase agreements with major carriers, minimizes direct exposure to fuel price fluctuations. The company's earnings outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate in three of the trailing four quarters and missed once, delivering an average surprise of 8.8%
