It also provides online marketplace services for third-party merchants; marketing services; and omni-channel solutions to customers and offline retailers, as well as online healthcare services. In addition, the company develops, owns, and manages its logistics facilities and other real estate properties to support third parties; offers asset management services and integrated service platform; leasing of storage facilities and related management services; and engages in online retail business. Further, it provides integrated data, technology, business, and user management industry solutions to support the digitization of enterprises and institutions; and technology-driven supply chain solutions and logistics services. The company was formerly known as 360buy Jingdong Inc. and changed its name to JD.com, Inc. in January 2014. JD.com, Inc. was incorporated in 2006 and is headquartered in Beijing, the People's Republic of China.

Let the chips fall where they may
President Donald Trump traveled to Beijing this week for a far-reaching summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Several U.S. business leaders, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, accompanied Trump.
Reports have emerged that several high-profile Chinese companies have been approved to purchase Nvidia's H200 AI chips, including Alibaba, Tencent Holdings, ByteDance, and JD.com, according to Reuters.
Huang believes the Chinese AI chip market could be worth as much as $50 billion to Nvidia, making this a big win for the company.
Moreover, several of Wall Street's finest issued higher price targets ahead of Nvidia's earnings report next week.
Cantor Fitzgerald analyst C.J. Muse increased his price target on Nvidia to $350, up from its previous level of $300, while maintaining an overweight (buy) rating on the stock. That represents potential gains for investors of 55% compared to Wednesday's closing price. The analyst noted that Nvidia's AI chips are likely sold out for the current fiscal year and believes investors are underestimating the company's earnings potential over the next few years.
UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri raised his price target to $275 from $245 while maintaining a buy rating on Nvidia stock. The analyst believes expectations are conservative heading into Nvidia's quarterly financial report, opening the door for a beat-and-raise quarter.
I think the analysts hit the nail on the head. Nvidia has a long track record of blowing past Wall Street's consensus estimates, and I believe this quarter will be no exception. Moreover, Nvidia generated $216 billion in revenue in fiscal 2026 (ended Jan. 25). If the company can successfully reenter the Chinese market, it could increase its annual revenue by another 23%.
At 28 times forward earnings and 21 times next year's expected earnings, investors can get Nvidia stock for a song, which is why I believe it's an unqualified buy -- and it could go much higher.

Alibaba -- May 13 before markets open
Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) is a Chinese e-commerce company that has a lot in common with Amazon. Both have powerful e-commerce engines and operate fast-growing cloud computing segments that are becoming increasingly important as AI growth accelerates.
The company last year announced plans to invest 380 billion yuan ($55.9 billion) over the next three years to improve its AI infrastructure and cloud computing capabilities. It also has its own large language model, Qwen, that functions in its e-commerce platforms and enterprise software.
Alibaba will be reporting earnings for its fiscal 2026 fourth quarter. The consensus estimate from analysts projects that the company will post quarterly sales of $36.36 billion, up 4.5% from last year, and earnings of $0.84 per share, down from $1.84 per share a year ago.
Sea Limited -- May 12 before markets open
Sea Limited (NYSE: SE) is an e-commerce company, but it's a little different from Alibaba. The company has its fingers in e-commerce and financial services, but it is also a significant player in digital entertainment. The Singapore-based company's segments include e-commerce (Shopee), fintech (Monee), and games (Garena).
Its 2025 sales were up 36.4% from a year ago to reach $22.9 billion, and net income jumped from $447.8 milion in 2024 to $1.6 billion in 2025. Investors will be looking to see whether Sea can sustain its e-commerce growth in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Brazil, and whether its fintech business will continue to expand in Southeast Asia and Latin America.
Analysts who cover the stock are looking for revenue in the first quarter of 2026 to jump 32.2% to $6.4 billion and for EPS of $0.77 per share.
JD.com -- May 12 before markets open
Continuing with the theme of e-commerce, JD.com (NASDAQ: JD) isn't nearly as big as Alibaba, carrying a market cap of $41.7 billion versus Alibaba's $328 billion. But it's known for its extensive fulfillment network and is considered the biggest retailer in China.
Revenue in the fourth quarter was $50.4 billion, up 1.5% from a year ago. The company posted a quarterly loss of $400 million or $0.29 per share -- the company's only earnings miss of the year. For the current quarter, the consensus estimate is for JD to post revenue of $45.77 billion and earnings of $0.54 per share.
Nebius Group -- May 13 before markets open
Nebius Group (NASDAQ: NBIS) is a fast-growing AI infrastructure company that provides cloud computing and graphics processing unit (GPU) capacity to run and train AI workloads. Nebius has a key partnership with Nvidia to provide full-stack AI clouds, and additional partnerships with companies such as Microsoft and Meta Platforms.
The company's revenue in the fourth quarter was $227.7 million, up 547% from the year-ago quarter. However, the company continued to post losses, with the Q4 net loss totaling $249.6 million and $0.99 per share.
Analysts are projecting first-quarter sales of $388.57 million, a 602% increase from a year ago. But EPS is still expected to be in the red, with the consensus estimate being a loss of $0.71 per share.

While management flagged on the December-quarter call that customer management revenues and physical goods GMV trends had recovered meaningfully entering the period, the rebound is likely to have come at a high cost in subsidies, margins and free cash flow. The setup follows a December quarter in which non-GAAP earnings per ADS fell 67% year over year.
Customer management revenue growth is expected to have firmed somewhat sequentially but remained constrained by an aggressive promotional cadence. Throughout January and February, BABA leaned heavily into the Lunar New Year cycle, channeling roughly RMB 3 billion in subsidies through the Qwen application to drive traffic into Taobao and Taobao Instant Commerce, including one-cent food-delivery offers that triggered tens of millions of orders within hours. China's headline retail sales decelerated to 1.7% year over year in March from 2.8% in the January-February period, indicating that the early-year demand impulse faded faster than anticipated and likely capped sequential monetization gains.
Quick commerce remained a structural drag entering the March quarter. The rebranding of Ele.me as Taobao Instant Commerce, completed during the December quarter and reinforced by deep integration into the Qwen app on Jan. 15, 2026, expanded order volumes but at the expense of margin discipline. Heavy subsidies tied to AI-led shopping campaigns are likely to have widened consolidated losses, mirroring the 78% year-over-year adjusted EBITA decline reported in the September quarter. Although management cited sequential unit economics improvement, the absolute loss base stayed elevated and full-year fiscal 2026 free cash flow is expected to have remained materially negative against the RMB 39 billion generated in the prior March quarter, with quick commerce subsidies and AI capex serving as the principal drags.
Cloud Intelligence Group growth, which accelerated to 36% in the December quarter, is expected to have remained robust but capacity-constrained as AI hardware shortages persisted and segment-level adjusted EBITA margins stayed mired in single digits despite strong public cloud demand.
Management's stated intent to scale investments beyond the existing RMB 380 billion three-year framework signals additional capex pressure ahead. The brief Feb. 13 inclusion of Alibaba on the Pentagon's 1260H list, though withdrawn within minutes, reintroduced an overhang around U.S. export controls and chip sourcing for next-generation AI infrastructure. Organizational churn, including the March departure of the Qwen division head and the rapid formation of the Alibaba Token Hub business group, added a layer of execution risk.

Alibaba shares have lost 11.8% in the past three months compared with the Zacks Internet-Commerce and the Zacks sector’s growth of 21.7% and 6.7%, respectively.
BABA faces tough competition from Amazon AMZN, PDD Holdings PDD and JD.com JD. Shares of Amazon and JD.com have returned 36.6% and 9.55 while PDD holdings has lost 1.5%, respectively, during the same period.

Alibaba's setup heading into the May 13 earnings release looks unfavorable. The March quarter is expected to have reflected continued quick commerce losses, escalating AI and cloud capex against the RMB 380 billion three-year commitment, and free cash flow pressure tied to aggressive Lunar New Year subsidies. Customer management revenue recovery likely came at a steep cost to margins as PDD Holdings and JD.com forced defensive pricing across marketplaces. With shares trading at a forward P/S above industry norms, premium valuation leaves little cushion for execution missteps or geopolitical overhang. Investors are better served stepping aside ahead of the print.
Conclusion
With quick commerce losses, mounting AI capex, free cash flow strain and intensifying competition from PDD Holdings and JD.com weighing on near-term profitability, Alibaba's premium valuation offers limited downside protection. Should You Hold or Fold Alibaba Stock Ahead of Q4 Earnings?

Retail sales rose in March, surpassing expectations as the ongoing conflict with Iran saw gasoline prices climb more than 30% over the past month. Although oil prices played a major role in boosting retail sales in March, the overall sector performed well.
The retail sector has put up a great show despite facing inflationary and tariff challenges. Sales have been on the rise this year, and the sector is poised to grow in the near term. Retail Sales Soar
Retail sales jumped 1.7% in March, the highest level in the past 12 months, after rising 0.7% in February. The jump was higher than the consensus estimate of a rise of 1.4%. The jump was expected, given that the U.S.-Iran war saw oil prices rise sharply over the past month.
Year over year, retail sales jumped 4% in March, surpassing the consensus estimate of a rise of just 0.7%.
Global oil prices have surged over 30% since the start of the war, while inflation soared to its highest level in nearly a year, with the consumer price index (CPI) rising 0.9% sequentially in March. This saw a 15.5% surge in receipts at gasoline stations.
However, consumers continued to spend even then. Retail sales excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services rose 0.7% in March. Sales at auto dealerships climbed 0.5% in March, while sales at electronics and appliance retailers rose 0.9%. Sales at furniture stores jumped 2.2%.
Online sales jumped 1%, while sales at restaurants and drinking places increased 0.1% in March. Higher demand and continued spending are boosting retail sales, and the sector is not only holding its ground but also preparing for growth in the near term.

This shift is reshaping the quality of growth within Alibaba's core commerce segment. Quick commerce is driving traffic and order frequency, but drawing in lower-spend users and deepening reliance on incentives to sustain engagement. Integration across Taobao and the broader ecosystem is improving platform stickiness, yet simultaneously increasing fulfillment complexity and operating intensity. The model appears effective at capturing demand but less efficient at extracting value, raising concerns around long-term margin normalization.
Quick commerce revenues surged 56% year over year in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, significantly outpacing the broader e-commerce segment. This growth coincided with a 57% decline in adjusted EBITA and a 74% contraction in operating income, underscoring the tangible cost of scaling. China commerce adjusted EBITA fell 43% while sales and marketing expenses expanded sharply to 25.3% of revenues, reflecting elevated user acquisition and retention spending that shows little sign of near-term moderation.

BABA's Quick Commerce Surges: Is Margin Pressure Set to Persist?

What happened
Shares of Alibaba (NYSE: BABA), the Chinese tech giant, were slipping today after it reported sluggish revenue growth in its March quarter earnings report. It also continued to make progress on its breakup plan, approving the spinoff of its cloud business.
As of 11:15 a.m. ET, the stock was down 3.8%.
So what
Alibaba continued to struggle with a challenging consumer environment in China as the e-commerce sector matures and it faces competition from Pinduoduo parent PDD Holdings and TikTok owner ByteDance.
Revenue in the quarter grew just 2% to $30.3 billion, which essentially matched the analyst consensus at $30.2 billion.
Profitability significantly improved in the quarter with adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, and amortization (EBITA) up 60% to $3.7 billion due to an increase in the core China commerce business, as well as narrower losses in the local consumer services and digital media and entertainment businesses.
On the bottom line, it said adjusted earnings per share rose 35% to $1.56, which topped estimates at $1.35.
The board also approved a full spinoff of the Cloud Intelligence Group, which will happen through a stock dividend distribution on its way to becoming a separate listed company.
It's also begun to start the process to raise external financing for international digital commerce business, and it's working on an IPO for the Cainiao logistics business and Freshippo, its grocery business.
Now what
Alibaba doesn't provide guidance, but the updates on the spinoff plan should reassure investors that there's underlying value here, as that seems like the best move for the company going forward.
Still, the company has seen minimal growth for several quarters now, finishing the fiscal year with just 2% revenue growth.
Until top-line growth reaccelerates, the stock is likely to be stuck in neutral as investors wait for the breakup plan to play out.

The payment processing fee Alibaba began charging in September 2024 had supported prior CMR figures and with that base effect fully lapsed, year-over-year comparisons turned considerably harder. Competitive intensity from PDD Holdings PDD and JD.com JD continued to force elevated subsidies across Alibaba's core commerce operations, compressing monetization efficiency and straining platform economics.
Quick commerce losses, which drove a steep 78% year-over-year decline in consolidated adjusted EBITA in the September quarter, are likely to have persisted into the December quarter as the company continued prioritizing scale over profitability. China's broader macroeconomic environment offered limited support. Consumer price growth remained fragile across October and November while producer price deflation extended into its fourth consecutive year, signaling persistent weakness in domestic demand that constrains Alibaba's core commerce business.
Cloud Intelligence Group's growth momentum is expected to have moderated from the September quarter's 34% pace as AI hardware supply constraints restricted infrastructure deployment capacity. With approximately RMB 120 billion deployed over the prior four quarters against a RMB 380 billion three-year capital expenditure commitment, free cash flow is expected to have remained under significant pressure. These structural headwinds position BABA unfavorably for near-term earnings recovery despite the cloud segment's underlying resilience.
