They lost their luster as China's economic growth cooled off, they faced intense scrutiny from antitrust regulators, and the trade war curbed the market's appetite for Chinese equities. Alibaba's high-growth days are over
Alibaba generates most of its revenue and profits from its two most significant Chinese marketplaces, Taobao and Tmall. A smaller slice of its revenue comes from its cloud infrastructure business, which operates at lower margins than its e-commerce marketplaces.
In 2021, China's antitrust regulators barred Taobao and Tmall from locking in their merchants with exclusive deals, using loss-leading promotions to gain new customers, and expanding with unapproved investments and acquisitions. Those restrictions throttled its growth and eroded its defenses against its top competitors, PDD (NASDAQ: PDD) and JD.com (NASDAQ: JD).
That pressure forced Alibaba to rely on its overseas marketplaces (including Lazada in Southeast Asia, Trendyol in Turkey, Daraz in South Asia, and AliExpress for cross-border purchases) and its Cainiao logistics business to drive its top-line growth. However, that strategy compresses its margins because those faster-growing businesses are still unprofitable.
From fiscal 2025 (which ended in March 2025) to fiscal 2028, analysts expect Alibaba's revenue and earnings per share (EPS) to grow at a CAGR of 8% and 11%, respectively. Its high-growth days are over, but it could stabilize Taobao and Tmall with AI-driven recommendations, new merchant tools, and logistics upgrades over the next few years. It also expects the AI boom to generate strong tailwinds for its cloud infrastructure business. The stable growth of its e-commerce and cloud businesses could free up more resources to expand its lower-margin international marketplaces and Cainiao's new third-party logistics services.
Tencent faces similar challenges
Tencent's core growth engine is WeChat (known as Weixin in China), a "super app" which bundles together messaging, news, e-commerce, payment, and gaming features for more than 1.41 billion monthly active users (MAUs). Its other main growth engine is its video game business, which publishes titles such as Honor of Kings, PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile, League of Legends, Clash of Clans, Pokémon Unite, and other hit games.
WeChat remains a vital app for everyday life in China, but it faces fierce competition from ByteDance's Douyin (known as TikTok overseas) and other rapidly growing apps. Meanwhile, China's government regulators are tightening their grip on its booming video game market by approving fewer titles and implementing playtime restrictions for minors. Those regulatory headwinds curbed the growth of Tencent's gaming business.
To offset that pressure, Tencent is expanding its higher-growth fintech and business services segment, which houses its WeChat Pay digital payments platform, Tencent Cloud infrastructure platform, and other enterprise-oriented services. It's also upgrading its targeted ads with new AI algorithms to squeeze more revenue from WeChat's existing users and expanding its overseas gaming business to reduce its dependence on the Chinese market.
Those new strategies are helping to stabilize Tencent's revenue and earnings growth. From 2024 to 2027, analysts expect its revenue and EPS to grow at a CAGR of 11% and 15%, respectively. The integration of its LLM into more WeChat ads, gaming, and enterprise features -- along with the growth of its gaming and cloud businesses -- should drive that growth.
Which stock is a better value?
Alibaba and Tencent are trading at 17 times and 20 times their next year's earnings, respectively. Alibaba might seem cheaper, but it's also growing at a slower rate and faces more formidable competitors in its core e-commerce market. Tencent also faces competitors in the advertising and gaming markets, but WeChat is still an irreplaceable app for its core Chinese users.
Both stocks could attract more investors if the trade tensions between the U.S. and China ease. However, Tencent seems like a more stable growth play than Alibaba -- which still needs to carefully expand its higher-growth businesses without crushing its own margins.

Cloud and AI emerged as Alibaba's primary growth engine
The most important development in 2025 was the acceleration of Alibaba Cloud, driven overwhelmingly by AI demand.
In the September 2025 quarter, Alibaba reported cloud revenue growth of 34% year over year, making it the company's fastest-growing major segment. Management also disclosed that AI-related cloud revenue continued to grow at triple-digit rates.
These numbers matter because they confirm something investors doubted for years: Alibaba's cloud business is no longer a scale story without monetization. AI workloads -- including model training, inference, and enterprise AI services -- require significantly more computing power than traditional cloud tasks. That dynamic drives higher spending per customer and improves the long-term quality of revenue.
Alibaba now operates as one of the core infrastructure providers supporting China's AI adoption. Enterprises across logistics, internet services, and industrial sectors increasingly rely on Alibaba Cloud to deploy and scale AI applications. With its integrated infrastructure comprising Qwen (Tongyi Qianwen) language models, cloud services, and AI development tools, Alibaba has built a cloud platform that increasingly resembles the roles Amazon's AWS and Microsoft's Azure play in Western markets, but is tailored to China's regulatory and enterprise environment.
For investors, 2025 changed how Alibaba Cloud fits into its long-term story. It moved from a supporting asset to the company's most credible long-term growth engine.
E-commerce stabilized, and that was enough
Alibaba's core China commerce business didn't reaccelerate in 2025 to its past trajectories, but it didn't need to. After years of concern that Taobao and Tmall were in structural decline, the business showed clear signs of stabilization.
In the half year ended Sept. 30, 2025, e-commerce customer management revenue returned to 10% growth, supported by improving user engagement and better retention. This performance is particularly satisfying considering that the giant continues to face intense competition from peers like Pinduoduo, JD.com, Douyin and Meituan.
This stabilization mattered more than headline growth rates. Investors stopped treating Alibaba's e-commerce business as a melting ice cube. Instead, they began viewing it as a mature, resilient foundation that could support investment in newer growth areas.
The bar for commerce in 2025 was simple: hold share, protect engagement, and avoid further erosion. Alibaba largely met that bar. While competitive pressure continues to weigh on margins, the commerce segment no longer dominates the risk narrative, giving management room to execute elsewhere.
Alibaba began redefining itself as a technology and AI platform
Perhaps the most underappreciated shift in 2025 was strategic rather than financial. Alibaba increasingly framed itself not just as an e-commerce leader, but as a cloud, AI, and enterprise technology platform.
This repositioning showed up across the organization. Alibaba highlighted AI-driven improvements across Taobao and Tmall and the use of AI across other businesses in logistics, enterprise software, etc. At the same time, the company emphasized its role as an infrastructure provider (primarily via its cloud and AI division) for enterprises building AI-powered workflows.
Don't get me wrong. Commerce still matters, but it no longer defines the entire strategic direction. Cloud and AI now sit at the center of Alibaba's long-term vision, with commerce acting as both a distribution channel and a data engine for its technology platform.
This identity shift matters because it expands Alibaba's opportunity set. A commerce-only Alibaba faces natural growth limits. A technology platform anchored in cloud and AI carries far more optionality over the next decade.
2025 didn't complete that transformation, but it made the direction unmistakably clear.
What does it mean for investors?
Alibaba still faces real challenges. Competition remains intense, margins face pressure, and investor sentiment toward Chinese tech can swing quickly. But 2025 delivered something investors hadn't seen in a while: coherence.
Cloud and AI now drive growth. E-commerce provides stability rather than anxiety. And management has articulated a clearer identity centered on technology and enterprise enablement.
For long-term investors, that combination matters more than short-term earnings volatility. Alibaba no longer looks like a company stuck between past success and future uncertainty. Instead, it looks like a company laying the groundwork for its next chapter.
2025 wasn't a comeback year. It was a reset year, and resets like this often mark the real beginning of a more durable recovery.

PDD (NASDAQ: PDD), China's third-largest e-commerce company after Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) and JD.com (NASDAQ: JD), went public on July 26, 2018 at $19 per ADS. On Feb. 17, 2021, its stock closed at its all-time high of $202.82.
That rally was fueled by the explosive growth of its discount marketplace, its market share gains against Alibaba and JD, and the expansion of its online agricultural business. It expanded by selling cheaper products in China's lower-tier cities, encouraging its shoppers to team up to score bigger bulk discounts, and bypassing supermarkets by directly connecting farmers to consumers. It also launched a cross-border marketplace, Temu, to connect its Chinese merchants to overseas buyers.

From 2018 to 2024, PDD's revenue grew at a CAGR of 76%. It also turned profitable in 2021, and its net income increased at a CAGR of 144% over the following three years. Those stunning growth rates made it one of the fastest-growing e-commerce companies globally.
But from 2024 to 2027, analysts expect its revenue and net income to grow at a more modest CAGR of 12% and 7%, respectively, as its business matures. It's facing stiffer competition from Alibaba and China, while the unpredictable tariffs are throttling Temu's overseas expansion.
PDD's stock has pulled back to about $110 and appears to be a bargain at ten times next year's earnings, but its high-growth days might be over. The persistent trade tensions between the U.S. and China could also continue to compress its valuations. Instead of betting on PDD's turnaround next year, investors should take a closer look at another high-growth e-commerce company, MercadoLibre (NASDAQ: MELI), which may have more upside potential.
How fast is MercadoLibre growing?
MercadoLibre, founded in Argentina in 1999 and currently headquartered in Uruguay, is the largest e-commerce company in Latin America. It established a first-mover's advantage by localizing its marketplace for different countries, expanding its logistics network across challenging terrain, and securing its customers with its Mercado Pago digital payments platform.
MercadoLibre now operates its marketplace across 19 Latin America countries, but it generates most of its revenue in Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. Its Mercado Pago platform has also expanded and evolved into a full-fledged fintech ecosystem with its own digital wallet, credit platform (Mercado Crédito), crypto trading tools, and banking services.
From 2018 to 2024, MercadoLibre's revenue grew at a CAGR of 56%. It also turned consistently profitable in 2021, and its net income grew at a CAGR of 184% over the following three years. At the end of 2024, it served over 100 million annual unique active buyers and 60 million fintech monthly active users. However, that only represents a fraction of the 668 million people (including 451 million adults) who live across the Latin American and Caribbean region.
MercadoLibre is saturating its three largest markets, but it's still expanding in smaller and higher-growth markets, such as Chile, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador. According to Grand View Research, Latin America's e-commerce market is expected to continue expanding at a robust CAGR of 17.4% from 2024 to 2030, as the region's income levels and internet penetration rates rise.
Why could MercadoLibre have more upside potential than PDD?
From 2024 to 2027, analysts expect MercadoLibre's revenue and net income to grow at a CAGR of 29% and 62%, respectively. That growth should be driven by its sales of more profitable products on its first-party marketplace and the expansion of its third-party, higher-margin credit and advertising businesses. Its improving scale should continue to dilute its logistics, payment processing, and marketing costs per order.
MercadoLibre should also profit from its competitors' setbacks. Americanas, its biggest rival in Brazil, struggled with a disastrous accounting scandal over the past two years. Singapore's Sea Limited (NYSE: SE), which launched its Shopee marketplace in Latin America in 2019, shut down most of those regional marketplaces over the following six years. Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) also struggled to expand its presence in Latin America over the past decade.
MercadoLibre's business is gradually maturing, but it still has more upside potential than PDD. It might seem a lot pricier at 34 times next year's earnings, but its stronger growth, broader diversification, and wider moat all justify that higher valuation.
