Revenues inched up 1% year over year to $607 million, backed by the catch-up of delayed sales in the first quarter of 2024. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $614.3 million. The figure also missed management’s guidance ($610-$620 million) owing to weakness across the Device Solutions and Networked Solutions segments amid strength in the Outcomes unit.
However, management highlighted steady customer demand in the first quarter, driven by grid modernization and automation, with Itron’s grid edge solutions supporting strong performance.

Itron’s bookings were $530 million and its backlog amounted to $4.7 billion at the end of the reported quarter. Notable first-quarter bookings include a key project with FirstEnergy to improve outage detection, data management and give consumers better energy insights.
In response to the mixed performance, ITRI’s shares declined 2.9% and closed the trading session at $108.05 on May 1. The stock has gained 1% in the past year against the Zacks Electronics-Testing Equipment industry’s decline of 4.9%.

Segments in Detail
Device Solutions: Revenues generated from this segment were $125.9 million (20.7% of total revenues), which dropped 1% (up 2% in constant currency) due to increased smart water sales, which were partially offset by declining sales in legacy electricity products.
Networked Solutions: Revenues of $402.7 (66.3%) million decreased 1%, largely attributed to the timing of shipments and project deployments. In addition, the prior year’s revenues included catch-up sales previously constrained, creating a tough year-over-year comparison.
Outcomes: Revenues of $78.5 million (13%) improved 14% on a year-over-year basis, driven by higher recurring revenues and increased software license sales.
Operating Details
Itron’s gross margin was 35.8%, which expanded 180 basis points on a year-over-year basis. This improvement was attributed to a more favorable product mix and continued operational efficiencies and cost discipline.
Non-GAAP operating expenses of $137 million fell 0.8% year over year.
Non-GAAP operating income was $80.3 million compared with $67.3 million in the year-ago quarter. The increase was due to improved gross profit and reduced non-GAAP operating costs.
Balance Sheet & Cash Flows
As of March 31, 2025, cash and cash equivalents totaled $1.123 billion compared with $1.05 billion as of Dec 31, 2024. Accounts receivable were $346.6 million.
As of March 31, net long-term debt was $786.1 million compared with $1.24 billion as of Dec 31, 2024.
Itron generated $72 million of cash from operations in the reported quarter compared with $41 million in the prior-year quarter.
In the first quarter, the free cash flow reached $67 million, up from $34 million in the previous year's quarter. The rise in free cash flow was attributed to stronger earnings, better working capital management and increased interest income.
Q2 2025 Guidance
Itron expects revenues to be between $605 million and $615 million, flat at midpoint compared to last year.
Non-GAAP EPS is anticipated to be in the range of $1.30-$1.40, with about 12% growth at the midpoint compared to last year.

Lobbying Update: $60,000 of NITRON GROUP LLC lobbying was just disclosed

U.S. equities finished Friday’s session with modest gains as investors digested a mix of central bank signals and looming trade policy concerns. The S&P 500 inched up 0.08% to settle at 5,667.56, while the Nasdaq Composite posted a stronger performance, climbing 0.52% to close at 17,784.05. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 32.05 points, also gaining 0.08%, to finish at 41,985.35.
The uncertainty surrounding potential tariffs added a layer of caution to trading activity, as investors remain wary of the potential drag on economic momentum. Concerns about how such policies could impact an already moderating growth environment continued to weigh on sentiment. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve maintained its benchmark interest rate in the 4.25-4.5% range, a level it has held since December.
In an environment marked by geopolitical uncertainty and shifting monetary policy, the markets continue to walk a tightrope. Against such a backdrop, value stocks stand out as a compelling investment option. Trading below their intrinsic value, these stocks offer a margin of safety during market fluctuations.
When evaluating value stocks, one of the most effective valuation metrics is the Price to Cash Flow (P/CF) ratio. Companies like Fresenius Medical Care AG FMS, EnerSys ENS, General Motors Company GM and Itron, Inc. ITRI boast a low P/CF ratio. The P/CF ratio evaluates the market price of a stock relative to the amount of cash flow that the company is generating on a per-share basis — the lower the number, the better.
Price to Cash Flow Reflects Financial Health
Value investing is considered one of the best practices when it comes to picking stocks. It is essentially about selecting stocks that are fundamentally sound but have been beaten down by some external factors. Such stocks are poised to bounce back as and when investors recognize the inherent value of companies. Certainly, the value investment strategy best suits investors with a long-term horizon.
There are different valuation metrics to determine a stock’s inherent strength. Still, a random selection of a ratio cannot serve your purpose if you want a realistic assessment of a company’s financial position. For this, the Price to Cash Flow (or P/CF) ratio is one of the key metrics.
Price-to-Cash-Flow metric evaluates the market price of a stock relative to the amount of cash flow that the company is generating on a per-share basis — the lower the number, the better. One of the important factors that makes P/CF a highly dependable metric is that operating cash flow adds back non-cash charges such as depreciation and amortization to net income, truly diagnosing a company's financial health.
Analysts caution that a company’s earnings are subject to accounting estimates and management manipulation. However, cash flow is reliable. Net cash flow unveils how much money a company is actually generating and how effectively management is deploying the same.
Positive cash flow indicates an increase in a company’s liquid assets. It gives the company the means to settle debt, meet its expenses, reinvest in its business, endure downturns and finally pay back its shareholders. Negative cash flow implies a decline in the company’s liquidity, which in turn lowers its flexibility to support these moves.
What’s the Best Value Investing Strategy?
An investment decision based solely on the P/CF metric may not yield the desired results. To identify stocks that are trading at a discount, you should expand your search criteria and also consider the price-to-book ratio, price-to-earnings ratio, and price-to-sales ratio. Adding a favorable Zacks Rank and a Value Score of A or B to your search criteria should lead to even better results as these eliminate the chance of falling into a value trap.
Here are the parameters for selecting true-value stocks:
P/CF less than or equal to X-Industry Median.
Price greater than or equal to 5: The stocks must all be trading at a minimum of $5 or higher.
Average 20-Day Volume greater than 100,000: A substantial trading volume ensures that the stock is easily tradable.
P/E using (F1) less than or equal to X-Industry Median: This parameter shortlists stocks that are trading at a discount or are equal to their peers.
P/B less than or equal to X-Industry Median: A lower P/B compared with the industry average implies that there is enough room for the stock to gain.
P/S less than or equal to X-Industry Median: The P/S ratio determines how a stock price compares to the company’s sales — the lower the ratio, the more attractive the stock is.
PEG less than 1: The ratio is used to determine a stock's value by taking the company's earnings growth into account. The PEG ratio gives a more complete picture than the P/E ratio. A value of less than 1 indicates that the stock is undervalued and that investors need to pay less for a stock that has robust earnings growth prospects.
Zacks Rank less than or equal to 2: Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or 2 (Buy) stocks are known to outperform irrespective of the market environment.
Value Score of less than or equal to B: Our research shows that stocks with a Style Score of A or B, when combined with Zacks Rank #1 or 2, offer the best upside potential.

The integration will expand Xcel Energy’s Renewable Battery Connect program, increasing the number of dispatchable residential batteries and helping accelerate the utility’s electrification goals. By utilizing stored solar energy during periods of peak demand, Xcel Energy can stabilize the grid more effectively while supporting its customers with clean energy.
Colorado’s abundant sunshine — averaging over 300 sunny days annually — makes it an ideal location for solar energy generation and battery storage. As one of the first states to adopt a Renewable Energy Standard, Colorado continues to lead in renewable innovation. Xcel Energy’s Renewable Battery Connect program is a first-of-its-kind model in the state, enabling a coordinated response to energy demand through VPP technology. By combining aggregator DERMS from Itron and battery solutions from Tesla, the program allows a network of DERs to function collectively as a single “virtual” power plant, delivering reliable energy back to the grid during critical times. The integration of Itron’s DERMS platform with Tesla’s battery technology will streamline DER coordination, customer enrollment, event dispatch and overall program optimization.
Strategic collaborations and deal wins are proving to be Itron’s key strength areas. In January 2025, it partnered with Encycle Technologies to improve energy efficiency for businesses by optimizing HVAC systems. The initiative helps reduce energy use during peak demand, easing grid stress and boosting reliability. In December 2024, Xcel Energy collaborated to harness Itron’s DERMS technology to address Colorado's evolving energy needs. In November 2024, the company joined forces with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) to enhance the availability and affordability of electric vehicle charging for PG&E's customers. In the fourth quarter, Pepco renewed its long-term partnership with Itron to continue supporting participants and advance next-generation edge demand response technologies, including Itron's distributed intelligence.

ITRI Teams With Tesla & Xcel to Deploy Virtual Power Plant in Colorado

Itron Inc. ITRI and its channel partner, National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (“NRTC”) have recently been selected by Arkansas Valley Electric Cooperative Corporation (“AVECC”) to redefine AVECC’s power grid by utilizing its existing fiber optic network and implementing Itron’s advanced smart grid technology. AVECC serves nearly 63,000 members across the Arkansas River Valley, maintaining more than 6,000 miles of distribution lines.
Backed by funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (“GRIP”) Program, the project involves deploying Itron’s Gen5 Riva smart meters connected through Itron’s fiber-enabled communications technology. The initiative was undertaken to improve grid reliability, promote clean energy adoption and empower rural communities through advanced technology.
ITRI’s Role in AVECC’s Grid Modernization Efforts
Recognizing the need to improve grid reliability and efficiency, AVECC launched its Advanced Smart Grid Project in 2018 by deploying a Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) fiber communications system. This high-speed, secure network provided connectivity to AVECC's electric substations and facilitated Internet access for community members.
However, to further enhance energy distribution, AVECC is upgrading its GPON fiber infrastructure by integrating Itron’s Fiber MiniAP devices, enabling connectivity for Itron electric smart meters across its service area. This is likely to give AVECC better grid visibility, control and analytics while allowing members to access enhanced services and detailed usage data.
The Fiber MiniAP is a highly flexible communication device that can extend industrial IoT (IIoT) network coverage in rural, low-meter-per-mile areas. It seamlessly supports both fiber and RF Mesh communications, enabling AVECC to connect smart grid assets, enhance network visibility and improve operational efficiency. As AVECC continues its smart grid journey, the deployment of Itron’s Gen5 Riva smart meters and Fiber MiniAP devices will enable utilities to harness advanced smart grid technologies for better energy management and reliability.
Strong business pipeline activities, driven by the increasing adoption of the grid edge intelligence platform, are driving ITRI’s revenue growth. In the last reported quarter, revenues of $613 million beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.6% and grew 6% year over year, exceeding the high end of the company’s guided range. Driven by momentum, it expects revenues to be between $610 million and $620 million for the first quarter of 2025.
