The second quarter of 2025 revealed a common pattern across the four U.S.-listed pure-play quantum companies, IonQ IONQ, D-Wave Quantum QBTS, Rigetti Computing RGTI and Quantum Computing Inc. QUBT. Each stock reported continued net losses as they scaled R&D and commercialization efforts, but simultaneously strengthened their balance sheets through significant fundraising to sustain ambitious technology roadmaps.
IonQ highlighted progress in advancing its Forte-class quantum computers,including the latest deals in Japan and South Korea, while reiterating its sizable cash runway. D-Wave posted a steep quarterly loss inflated by non-cash warrant charges but completed a successful $400 million At-the-Market (ATM) equity offering. Rigetti launched its Cepheus-1-36Q quantum computer with error-rate reductions and also made a $350 million equity raise that lifted its cash reserve. Last but not least, QUBT recorded only modest revenues but secured new academic, commercial, and government contracts while fortifying its position with a $188 million financing that boosted cash to $349 million.
Collectively, these companies remain far from profitability right now. However, these are leveraging investor capital and government partnerships to turn today’s financial losses into future quantum breakthroughs. For investors, this is the right time to dig deeper to assess whether backing these loss-making stocks now could, despite the risks, translate into meaningful long-term gains. Let's find out.

IonQ
In the second quarter, the company posted a net loss of $177.5 million, but simultaneously secured the largest-ever single institutional equity raise in the quantum industry, lifting its pro forma cash position to $1.6 billion. Management emphasized that this capital will underpin the expansion of its quantum computing and networking roadmap, including the acquisitions of Lightsynq and Capella and the proposed $1.075 billion purchase of Oxford Ionics, aimed at scaling to 800 logical qubits by 2027. IonQ’s commercial highlights included a $22 million EPB deal to build America’s first commercial quantum hub and new partnerships across Japan, South Korea, Sweden, and Australia.

D-Wave
D-Wave also reported steep second-quarter losses, with a net loss of $167 million, heavily influenced by non-cash warrant revaluation charges. Yet its financial story was dominated by a successful fundraising round that added more than $500 million in equity, including $400 million gross proceeds from the fourth At-the-Market (ATM) equity program, boosting its cash balance to $819 million. These funds are intended to be used for acquisitions, accelerating R&D toward its 100,000-qubit roadmap and enhancing cryogenic packaging and error suppression.
Alongside the financing, D-Wave highlighted continued traction in annealing-based quantum solutions and recurring government contracts, highlighting its positioning as the only provider with a “production-ready” quantum system today. Rigetti
Rigetti’s second-quarter performance also revealed the contrast between technological progress and deepening losses. The company introduced Cepheus-1-36Q, the industry’s largest multi-chip quantum computer, achieving record improvements in error rates. Yet, revenues fell to just $1.8 million, weighed down by the expiration of U.S. National Quantum Initiative funding and weaker gross margins. The company incurred $39.7 million in net loss, including significant non-cash charges from warrant and earn-out liabilities. Despite these setbacks, Rigetti bolstered its balance sheet with a $350 million equity raise, closing the quarter with $571.6 million in cash and no debt.
RGTI management emphasized that this liquidity provides critical runway for continued R&D, strategic partnerships and scaling toward its 100+ qubit roadmap, even as profitability remains distant. The stock also carries a Zacks Rank #3.

Quantum Computing
QUBT’s second-quarter results highlighted the company’s early-stage nature, with revenues of just $61,000 against a steep net loss of $36.5 million, largely due to a non-cash warrant liability adjustment. Despite this widening loss profile, QUBT bolstered its balance sheet through a $200 million financing round, lifting its cash reserves to $349 million by quarter-end. This underscores the company’s reliance on external capital to sustain operations and fund growth initiatives.
Quantum Computing management is channeling these resources into advancing its quantum-photonic machines, scaling its newly operational Arizona chip foundry and expanding commercial adoption across research, enterprise and government sectors. The company, with a Zacks Rank #3, is projected to report a loss of 17 cents per share in 2025, 77% narrower than the year-ago period’s net loss per share.

The S&P 500 experienced its longest losing streak of 2025, dropping for five consecutive trading days as of Thursday. It is also the first time this year that the index has endured such a drop, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
The S&P 500 declined 1.5% over the past five sessions, pressured by selling in big tech names as investors rotated away from the tech sector on AI bubble fears and overvaluation concerns. This downturn was exacerbated by disappointing Target TGT and Walmart WMT earnings, renewed tariff impacts and fading hopes of a Fed rate cut in September (read: Value Outshines Growth: 5 ETF Winners Over the Past Week).
Ahead of Powell's speech, CME Group's FedWatch Tool is currently indicating a 73.6% chance that the Fed will lower rates by a quarter point next month, down from 92.1% a week ago.
The market sell-off has fueled a rally in inverse single-stock ETFs. Inverse single-stock ETFs are designed to deliver the opposite daily return of a specific company’s stock by using derivatives. For example, if the underlying stock drops 1% in a day, the inverse ETF targeting that stock would ideally increase about 1%.
Some ETFs offer leveraged exposure, such as -2x or -3x, which attempt to deliver two or three times the inverse of the stock’s daily move. This allows investors to gain inverse exposure to a particular stock without having to sell the stock directly.

While inverse single-stock ETFs surge amid the sell-off, they come with significant risks due to their lack of diversification and exposure to the volatility of a single stock. They are typically more suited for experienced investors who understand and are willing to accept these risks. Here are some of the downsides of these ETFs:
Daily Reset and Compounding Risks: The performance of inverse ETFs could vary significantly from the actual performance of their underlying stock over a longer period when compared to a shorter period (such as weeks or months). These funds run the risk of huge losses in fluctuating or seesawing markets.
Risk of Significant Losses: As the ETF is tied to a single stock, a surprise rally in the company’s shares can quickly erode gains and generate steep losses for inverse ETF holders.

Foolish take
Most insider sales involve the conversion of stock options into ordinary shares, which are then sold like any other stock. These transactions are usually pre-planned, with the trading schedule reported beforehand in the company's proxy filings.
This trade report is no different. Inder Singh has been an IonQ director since 2021, accepting the role of lead independent director earlier this year. With executive-level experience from cable giant Comcast and microchip architecture specialist Arm Holdings, Singh adds valuable business and technology expertise to the boardroom.
80% of Singh's annual compensation consists of restricted stock awards. He can access this income source by selling shares on the open market. So investors shouldn't see this stock sale as an IonQ director backing out of his stock holdings due to concerns out the business, or stock valuation, or anything else. Singh is simply converting some of his stock awards into cash, as many business insiders do on a regular basis.
At the same time, Singh is getting an extraordinary cash value out of these shares, since IonQ's stock soared to lofty heights at the end of 2024. The stock still commands a price-to-sales ratio of 162, even though quantum computing systems are many years away from doing useful work and fueling IonQ's business operations.

Director Sells 50K IonQ Shares Worth $2.2 Million

Investors considering a purchase of Ionq Inc (Symbol: IONQ) stock, but tentative about paying the going market price of $35.75/share, might benefit from considering selling puts among the alternative strategies at their disposal. One interesting put contract in particular, is the January 2027 put at the $20 strike, which has a bid at the time of this writing of $3.35. Collecting that bid as the premium represents a 16.8% return against the $20 commitment, or a 11.9% annualized rate of return (at Stock Options Channel we call this the YieldBoost).
Selling a put does not give an investor access to IONQ's upside potential the way owning shares would, because the put seller only ends up owning shares in the scenario where the contract is exercised. And the person on the other side of the contract would only benefit from exercising at the $20 strike if doing so produced a better outcome than selling at the going market price. So unless Ionq Inc sees its shares fall 43.3% and the contract is exercised (resulting in a cost basis of $16.65 per share before broker commissions, subtracting the $3.35 from $20), the only upside to the put seller is from collecting that premium for the 11.9% annualized rate of return.

The company is on a positive trajectory, having reported second-quarter revenues of $20.7 million compared to $11.4 million last year, and anticipates third-quarter revenues of $25 million, nearly double the previous year’s figures. This revenue growth indicates that the company’s acquisition strategy is effective and its business model is solid.
Can IONQ Become the NVIDIA in Quantum Computing?
IonQ aspires to become the NVIDIA of quantum computing by relying on consistent revenue growth and successful acquisitions, with more anticipated in the future. However, despite revenue growth, IonQ hasn’t generated any profit. In the second quarter, IonQ had an operating expense of $181.3 million, which resulted in an operating loss of $160.6 million, way more than $48.9 million loss a year ago.
The operating loss exceeded revenue growth, which can compel IonQ to face financial challenges and jeopardize its aim to become the NVIDIA of quantum computing. NVIDIA, in reality, is in a better position to compete against pure-play quantum computing stocks like IonQ. This is because NVIDIA aims to integrate its graphics processing units (GPUs) and quantum processing units (QPUs) in a hybrid quantum system to efficiently manage calculation errors. Utilizing its GPU framework serves as an effective bridge from current classical computers to quantum technology.
Additionally, in contrast to IonQ, NVIDIA has reported an operating income of $21.6 billion in the fiscal first quarter, up 28% year over year. Its revenues also jumped 69% year over year to $44.1 billion. Being a profitable enterprise will enable NVIDIA to effectively tackle the challenges of quantum computing and expand its operations. Therefore, it is premature to determine that IonQ could become the NVIDIA of quantum computing.
Here’s How to Trade IONQ Stock Now
The series of acquisitions indicates that IonQ has bold plans to grow in the quantum computing industry, which is projected to reach a value of $100 billion by 2035, according to McKinsey. This should encourage stakeholders to remain invested in IonQ stock.
However, new investors should proceed with caution. Quantum computing is still in its early stages, and IonQ is not yet profitable. Several leading CEOs have stated that the widespread use of quantum computing technology is still years away and that it remains prone to errors. Therefore, IonQ is a risky investment suitable only for high-risk-tolerance investors.
Let’s not forget that IonQ is an overpriced stock and could see its price fall when the market corrects itself. IonQ’s forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio stands at 126.59 compared to 4.14 for the Computer-Integrated System industry.

IonQ, Inc.’s IONQ shares surged 457.9% over the past year, driven by its significant advancements in quantum computing. IonQ has offered its customers quantum systems via platforms like Microsoft Corporation’s MSFT Azure, Amazon.com, Inc.’s AMZN Amazon Web Services, and Alphabet Inc.’s GOOGL Google Cloud.

Reasons to Be Bullish on IONQ
IonQ has prepared the groundwork for its quantum computers to seamlessly integrate into real-world applications. IonQ is preparing compatible trapped-ion quantum computers for major cloud platforms. IonQ has already acquired several companies, including Qubitekk, ID Quantique, and Lightsynq Technologies, to enhance its presence in the quantum field and has secured contracts from the U.S. Air Force Research Lab, which is expected to drive significant growth for the company in the next two years.
IonQ’s revenues have increased significantly since its initial public offering in 2021. Management projects revenues between $82 million and $100 million this year, significantly higher than $43.1 million in 2024.
The company is on a positive trajectory, having reported second-quarter revenues of $20.7 million compared to $11.4 million last year, and anticipates third-quarter revenues of $25 million, nearly double the previous year’s figures. This revenue growth indicates that the company’s acquisition strategy is effective and its business model is solid.
Can IONQ Become the NVIDIA in Quantum Computing?
IonQ aspires to become the NVIDIA of quantum computing by relying on consistent revenue growth and successful acquisitions, with more anticipated in the future. However, despite revenue growth, IonQ hasn’t generated any profit. In the second quarter, IonQ had an operating expense of $181.3 million, which resulted in an operating loss of $160.6 million, way more than $48.9 million loss a year ago.
The operating loss exceeded revenue growth, which can compel IonQ to face financial challenges and jeopardize its aim to become the NVIDIA of quantum computing. NVIDIA, in reality, is in a better position to compete against pure-play quantum computing stocks like IonQ. This is because NVIDIA aims to integrate its graphics processing units (GPUs) and quantum processing units (QPUs) in a hybrid quantum system to efficiently manage calculation errors. Utilizing its GPU framework serves as an effective bridge from current classical computers to quantum technology.
Additionally, in contrast to IonQ, NVIDIA has reported an operating income of $21.6 billion in the fiscal first quarter, up 28% year over year. Its revenues also jumped 69% year over year to $44.1 billion. Being a profitable enterprise will enable NVIDIA to effectively tackle the challenges of quantum computing and expand its operations. Therefore, it is premature to determine that IonQ could become the NVIDIA of quantum computing.
Here’s How to Trade IONQ Stock Now
The series of acquisitions indicates that IonQ has bold plans to grow in the quantum computing industry, which is projected to reach a value of $100 billion by 2035, according to McKinsey. This should encourage stakeholders to remain invested in IonQ stock.
However, new investors should proceed with caution. Quantum computing is still in its early stages, and IonQ is not yet profitable. Several leading CEOs have stated that the widespread use of quantum computing technology is still years away and that it remains prone to errors. Therefore, IonQ is a risky investment suitable only for high-risk-tolerance investors.
Let’s not forget that IonQ is an overpriced stock and could see its price fall when the market corrects itself. IonQ’s forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio stands at 126.59 compared to 4.14 for the Computer-Integrated System industry.
