Delta Air Lines, Inc. provides scheduled air transportation for passengers and cargo in the United States and internationally. The company operates through two segments, Airline and Refinery. Its domestic network centered on core hubs in Atlanta, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Detroit, and Salt Lake City, as well as coastal hub positions in Boston, Los Angeles, New York-LaGuardia, New York-JFK, and Seattle; and international network centered on hubs and market presence in Amsterdam, Bogota, Lima, Mexico City, London-Heathrow, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Sao Paulo, Seoul-Incheon, and Tokyo. The company sells its tickets through various distribution channels, including delta.com and the Fly Delta app; acts as a reservations specialists; and operates online travel and traditional brick and mortar agencies. It also provides aircraft maintenance and engineering support, repair, and overhaul services; and vacation packages to third-party consumers. The company operates through a fleet of approximately 1,273 aircrafts. Delta Air Lines, Inc. was founded in 1924 and is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

However, absolute liabilities remain high, which weighs on the valuation, especially given the industry’s cyclicality. Revenue and assets are growing, and equity has increased significantly, confirming a recovery in scale and the balance sheet base. At the same time, EBITDA and operating profit have declined relative to the stronger quarters of last year, while TTM net income looks weaker than in previous periods, indicating pressure on current momentum. Dividend yield is low and declining, so the dividend factor provides almost no support to the investment case. Overall, the picture is rather neutral-to-positive in terms of business quality, but with clear liquidity and cyclicality risks, so the target forecast should be slightly reduced, while maintaining a moderately constructive view on long-term value.

Stocks whipsawed Wednesday afternoon and briefly erased their losses before selling off again into the close after the FOMC kept interest rates unchanged in a hawkish Fed hold. Three Fed members dissented in favor of a quarter-point rate hike, and Fed Chair Warsh said the Fed is committed to “deliver price stability.” The 10-year T-note yield rose +4 bp to 4.64%.
Earnings results from Microsoft and Meta Platforms after Wednesday’s close will be looked at to see whether the vast spending behind the buildout of artificial intelligence can deliver adequate returns.
The FOMC, as expected, kept the fed funds target range unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75% in a 9-3 vote, with Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan voting for a quarter-point rate hike.
The post-FOMC statement said, "Economic activity is expanding at a solid pace despite elevated uncertainty that owes, in part, to the conflict in the Middle East," adding that "productivity growth and capital investment are strong." Inflation remains elevated "in part reflecting supply shocks that have driven price increases in certain sectors, including energy."
Fed Chair Warsh said, "The economy is showing impressive resilience" even with recent shocks and policymakers "will not hesitate to act" if inflation remains elevated.
Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) jumped by more than +6% on Wednesday as the recent lull in hostilities came to an abrupt end after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US airbase and command center in Jordan with ballistic missiles. The IRGC also claimed to have hit and halted three tankers attempting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the US and Saudi Arabia launched a joint attack on "Iran-aligned terrorists" in Iraq after the IRGC directed them to target US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.
Tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf. Also, diplomatic attempts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz appear to be at an impasse. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi said Oman's proposal for a route through the Strait of Hormuz, with 50% under Iran's control and 50% under Oman's, would not address Iran's concerns and that the inbound passage and part of the outbound channel must be entirely under Iran's control.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -6.4% in the week ended July 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -3.6% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -9.9%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +7 bp to an 11.5-month high of 6.76% from 6.69% the prior week.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are awaiting results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms today, and Amazon.com and Apple on Thursday. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 87% of the 216 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 56% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on September 15-16.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.65%. China's Shanghai Composite rebounded from a 1-week low and closed up +0.40%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2.25-month low and closed down -1.49%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Wednesday closed down -1 tick. The 10-year T-note yield rose +3.3 bp to 4.639%. T-notes were under pressure from Wednesday’s +6% surge in crude oil prices, which raises inflation expectations and is hawkish for Fed policy. Also, the FOMC's hawkish hold on interest rates weighed on T-note prices after three Fed members dissented in favor of a 25 bp rate hike, and Fed Chair Warsh said policymakers "will not hesitate to act" if inflation remains elevated.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose +5.6 bp to 3.160%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +9.2 bp to 5.036%.
The German Jun import price index eased to 6.1% y/y from 6.8% y/y in May.
The markets are discounting a 90% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at their next policy meeting on September 10.

Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks fell sharply on Wednesday, weighing on the broader market. Stocks Tumble as Chipmakers Plunge, Oil Spikes

Stock indexes are falling today, with the S&P 500 sliding to a 1-month low and the Nasdaq 100 sinking to a 3-month low. Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks are selling off today, leading the overall market lower. Also, heightened geopolitical risks are weighing on stocks as crude prices surged, and bond yields jumped when President Trump said the US will “hit Iran hard” after a recent attack from Iran that targeted a US base in Jordan.

The markets are awaiting the results of the 2-day FOMC meeting that ends early this afternoon, with policymakers expected to keep interest rates unchanged. Also, earnings results from Microsoft and Meta Platforms after today’s close will be looked at to see whether the vast spending behind the buildout of artificial intelligence can deliver adequate returns. The 10-year T-note yield is up +4 bp to 4.64%.
Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) jumped by more than +7% today as the recent lull in hostilities came to an abrupt end after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US airbase and command center in Jordan with ballistic missiles. The IRGC also claimed to have hit and halted three tankers attempting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the US and Saudi Arabia launched a joint attack on "Iran-aligned terrorists" in Iraq after the IRGC directed them to target US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.
Tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf. Also, diplomatic attempts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz appear to be at an impasse. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi said Oman's proposal for a route through the Strait of Hormuz, with 50% under Iran's control and 50% under Oman's, would not address Iran's concerns and that the inbound passage and part of the outbound channel must be entirely under Iran's control.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -6.4% in the week ended July 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -3.6% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -9.9%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +7 bp to an 11.5-month high of 6.76% from 6.69% the prior week.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are awaiting results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms today, and Amazon.com and Apple on Thursday. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 87% of the 216 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 34% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the conclusion of today’s FOMC meeting.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.73%. China's Shanghai Composite rebounded from a 1-week low and closed up +0.40%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2.25-month low and closed down -1.49%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are down -9 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +3.0 bp to 4.637%. T-notes are under pressure today from a +7% surge in crude oil prices, which raises inflation expectations and is hawkish for Fed policy. Also, long liquidation and position evening are weighing on T-notes ahead of the FOMC’s interest rate decision later today.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +5.0 bp to 3.154%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +7.7 bp to 5.021%.
The German Jun import price index eased to 6.1% y/y from 6.8% y/y in May.
The markets are discounting an 88% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.

Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks are sharply lower today, weighing on the broader market. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index ($SOX) dropped to a 2.5-month low and is down more than -3%. Also, Applied Materials (AMAT), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), and ARM Holdings (ARM) are down by more than -5%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is down more than -4%. Also, Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL), Marten Transport Ltd (MRTN), Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings (KNX), and XPO Inc (XPO) are down more than -1%.

Stocks Tumble Ahead of FOMC as Chipmakers Plunge

Southwest Airlines Co. LUV has a stronger investment case after a sharp earnings rebound and a major stock rally. Better revenue productivity, solid liquidity and shareholder returns support the recovery story.
The case is still balanced. Fuel exposure, Boeing-related execution risk and a valuation premium to the airline sub-industry limit how aggressively investors may want to chase the shares.
LUV’s Earnings Beat Strengthens the Bull Case
Southwest Airlines reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of 94 cents per share, up 118.6% year over year. The result was 80.8% above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 52 cents.
The earnings beat came despite a revenue miss. Operating revenues of $8.43 billion rose 16.4% but missed the consensus mark by 1.7%, showing that cost control and stronger unit economics were central to the quarter’s upside.

Southwest Airlines Restores Margin Momentum
Adjusted operating income climbed 138.8% to $585 million. Adjusted operating margin expanded 3.3 percentage points to 6.7%, despite an $889 million year-over-year increase in fuel expense.
The improvement was not driven by broad volume growth. Capacity increased only 0.2%, while adjusted revenue per available seat mile jumped 20.1%, helped by higher fares, disciplined capacity, assigned and extra-legroom seating, bag fees and better revenue management.
LUV’s Valuation Sends Mixed Signals
LUV trades at 0.66X forward 12-month price-to-sales. That is above 0.53X for the Zacks airline sub-industry but below Southwest Airlines' five-year median of 0.88X.
That creates a split valuation picture. The stock may look inexpensive against its own history, but it does not offer a clear discount to direct industry benchmarks. Delta Air Lines DAL and American Airlines Group AAL remain relevant peers for investors comparing airline demand, pricing and cost exposure; Delta Air Lines operates a global network serving more than 290 destinations, while American Airlines' investor relations site provides financial information for stockholders and analysts.
Southwest Airlines Has Moderate Target Upside
Southwest Airlines' $55 price target compares with a reported share price of $46.31. The target still implies upside, but the stock has already gained 12.1% year to date and 50.8% over the trailing 12 months.
After that move, execution matters more. Further appreciation likely depends on whether Southwest Airlines can sustain unit-revenue gains while managing fuel, retrofit costs and fleet-delivery risk.
LUV’s Liquidity Supports the Turnaround
Southwest Airlines ended the second quarter with $5.3 billion of liquidity, including $3.8 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Gross leverage was 2.1 times, and first-half operating cash flow reached nearly $2 billion.
Capital allocation also supports flexibility. The company paid $181 million in dividends in the first half of 2026 and repurchased $1.25 billion of common stock in the first quarter, while management expects 2026 net capital spending near the low end of, or below, the prior $3.0-$3.5 billion range.

The bottom line: Southwest Airlines has improved its earnings profile, but investors still need confirmation that the rebound can withstand fuel volatility, higher nonfuel costs and Boeing-related execution challenges.

Stocks Pressured by Renewed US-Iran Hostilities

Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. ODFL reported second-quarter 2026 earnings of $1.68 per share, up 32.3% year over year. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.52 by 10.5%.
Revenues rose 10.4% to $1.55 billion and inched past the consensus mark of $1.54 billion by 0.8%. The upside reflected stronger yield, with LTL revenue per hundredweight increasing 15.2%, despite lower freight volumes.
ODFL Gains From Stronger Yield
LTL services revenues increased 10.3% year over year to $1.54 billion. Other services revenues advanced 19.5% to $15.1 million, supporting broad-based top-line growth during the quarter.
The revenue increase was primarily driven by pricing and mix. LTL revenue per hundredweight, excluding fuel surcharges, improved 5.5% from the year-ago period. Management linked the increase to its disciplined approach to yield management, which is intended to offset cost inflation and fund continued investment in capacity, technology and employees.
Old Dominion Faces Continued Volume Pressure
LTL tons per day declined 4.1% year over year to 31,804. The decrease reflected a 5.7% drop in LTL shipments per day to 42,332, partly offset by a 1.7% increase in LTL weight per shipment to 1,503 pounds.
LTL revenue per shipment climbed 17.2% to $568.55. Excluding fuel surcharges, revenue per shipment rose 7.2% to $446.44, helping offset weaker shipment activity. LTL intercity miles fell 4.8%, while the average length of haul edged down 0.3% to 909 miles.

ODFL Delivers Sharp Margin Expansion
Total operating expenses increased 3.7% year over year to $1.09 billion, a much slower pace than revenue growth. Salaries, wages and benefits rose 2.3% to $687.3 million, while operating supplies and expenses increased 24.7% to $177.7 million.
The operating ratio (operating expenses as a percentage of revenues) improved 450 basis points to 70.1%. Direct operating costs as a percentage of revenues improved 230 basis points. Overhead efficiency also benefited from $17.2 million in net gains on property and equipment disposals, supporting the year-over-year margin expansion.
Old Dominion Posts Strong Profit Growth
Operating income surged 30% year over year to $465.3 million. Net income advanced 30.5% to $350.6 million, while the net margin expanded to 22.6% from 19.1% in the prior-year quarter.
The company maintained high service quality, reporting 99% on-time service and a claims ratio of 0.1%. Management said improving demand trends, disciplined pricing and operational execution helped produce profitable revenue growth while preserving the company’s customer-service standards.
ODFL Generates Healthy Cash Flow
Net cash provided by operating activities was $272.7 million in the second quarter and $646.3 million for the first half of 2026. Capital expenditures were $77 million in the quarter and $139.6 million through the first six months.
Old Dominion, currently carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), ended June with $283.9 million in cash and cash equivalents, up from $120.1 million at the end of 2025. Total assets were $5.74 billion, while total shareholders’ equity reached $4.55 billion. Current maturities of long-term debt were $20 million and no long-term debt remained on the balance sheet. Old Dominion Raises Capital Spending Plan
The company now expects 2026 capital expenditures of about $380 million (earlier guidance was for $265 million). The plan includes $180 million for real estate and service-center expansion, $155 million for tractors and trailers, and $45 million for information technology and other assets.
The updated spending plan is significantly higher than the $265 million anticipated after the first quarter. This increase primarily reflects additional planned investment in real estate, service centers, tractors and trailers.
During the first half of 2026, ODFL used $239.7 million for share repurchases and paid $120.7 million in cash dividends. Management said continued investment in its network and workforce should provide the capacity needed to support customers as freight demand evolves and position the company to pursue additional market share.
Q2 Performance of Some Other Transportation Companies
Delta Air Lines DAL reported second-quarter 2026 earnings (excluding 88 cents from non-recurring items) of $1.56 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.51. Earnings declined in double digits (% wise) from a year ago as sharply higher fuel costs pressured profitability.
Revenues rose on a year-over-year basis to $17.67 billion but missed the consensus estimate of $17.76 billion. Broad demand strength lifted adjusted total revenue per available seat mile, or TRASM, 12.4%, while premium and diversified revenue streams continued to expand.
United Airlines UAL reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.99 per share, down 48.6% year over year but above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.92 by 3.7%.
Operating revenues rose 16% to $17.67 billion and were essentially in line with the $17.68-billion consensus mark. A 12.1% increase in total revenue per available seat mile, and broad-based gains across premium, loyalty and cargo revenues supported the top line despite sharply higher fuel costs.

ODFL Q2 Earnings Beat Estimates on Yield and Cost Discipline

Werner Enterprises, Inc. (WERN) reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of 22 cents per share, which matched the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The figure surged more than 100% from the year-ago quarter.
Revenues of $933.9 million surpassed the consensus mark of $932 million by 0.2%. The top line increased 24% year over year owing to a $184.9 million, or 36%, increase in Truckload Transportation Services (TTS) revenues, partially offset by a decline in Werner Logistics revenues of $9.4 million. A portion of the TTS revenue increase was owing to $65.4 million higher fuel surcharge revenues.
Adjusted operating income increased 67% year over year to $27.6 million. The adjusted operating margin expanded 80 basis points to 3%, reflecting stronger underlying performance despite acquisition-related and restructuring costs.

Werner's Truckload Segment Drives Growth
Truckload Transportation Services revenues rose 36% year over year to $702.6 million. Trucking revenues, excluding fuel surcharges, increased 27% year over year to $572.2 million, aided by FirstFleet, higher rates and improved asset utilization.
Adjusted segment operating income jumped 153% year over year to $32.3 million. The adjusted operating margin, excluding fuel surcharges, improved 270 basis points to 5.5%, supported by FirstFleet contributions, better One-Way profitability and lower insurance and claims expense in the legacy business.
Average TTS trucks increased 16.3% year over year to 8,712. The quarter-end fleet totaled 8,695 trucks, up 15.2% year over year, while average revenue per truck per week rose 9.1% to $5,053.
WERN's Dedicated Fleet Benefits From FirstFleet
Dedicated trucking revenues, net of fuel surcharges, increased 51.4% year over year to $434.3 million. Average Dedicated trucks rose 43.7% year over year to 6,976, reflecting the FirstFleet acquisition and organic fleet growth.
Dedicated trucks represented 80% of the total TTS fleet at quarter-end. Average revenue per truck per week improved 5.4% year over year to $4,789, while the company maintained customer retention above 95%.
Werner said that integration and synergy realization related to FirstFleet were running ahead of schedule. Continuity among acquired drivers, associates and customers also supported the segment's profitability improvement.
Werner's One-Way Restructuring Shows Progress
One-Way Truckload revenues, excluding fuel surcharges, declined 15.9% to $137.9 million as average trucks decreased 34.1% to 1,736. The smaller fleet reflected the company's restructuring actions.
Productivity improved substantially. Revenue per total mile increased 10.4%, while total miles per truck per week rose 15.7%. Average completed trip length increased 17.9% to 685 miles, and the percentage of empty miles declined to 14.94%.
Management attributed the improvement to higher spot rates, contractual rate increases and better freight selection. The restructuring also contributed to margin improvement within the broader TTS segment.
WERN's Logistics Business Faces Margin Pressure
Werner’s Logistics revenues declined 4% year over year to $211.7 million.
Truckload Logistics revenues, representing 72% of segment revenues, fell 10% year over year as shipments decreased 29%, partly offset by a 26% year-over-year increase in revenue per shipment. Intermodal revenues rose 18% year over year, supported by a 17% increase in shipments. Final Mile revenues increased 14% year over year and 13% sequentially.
The segment posted an adjusted operating loss of $2.7 million against adjusted operating income of $5.9 million a year earlier. Higher purchased transportation costs, lower volumes and gross-margin contraction reduced the adjusted operating margin to negative 1.3%.
WERN Maintains Strong Liquidity and Cash Flow
As of June 30, 2026, Werner had cash and cash equivalents of $57.02 million compared with $61.54 million at the prior-quarter end. Long-term debt (net of current portion) was $793 million compared with $869.6 million at the prior-quarter end.
Operating cash flow increased 84% year over year to $84.7 million in the second quarter. Net capital proceeds totaled $9.7 million compared with capital expenditures of $65.6 million in the prior-year quarter, producing free cash flow of $94.4 million.
The company did not repurchase shares during the quarter. Five million shares remained available under its repurchase authorization.
Werner Updates 2026 Guidance
Werner now expects 2026 TTS average truck count growth of 16-18%, down from the previous 23-28% range, as anticipated fleet additions are likely to shift beyond year-end.
Dedicated revenue per truck per week is projected to rise 3-5%, compared with the prior flat-to-3% outlook. The company expects One-Way revenue per total mile to increase 10-13% in the third quarter.
Full-year net capital expenditures are now forecasted to be between $215 million and $250 million, up from $185-$225 million, as Werner refreshes its tractor fleet. The projected tax rate remains in the range of 25.5%-26.5%.

Werner Q2 Earnings Meet Estimates as TTS Margins Improve

Landstar System, Inc. (LSTR) reported solid second-quarter 2026 results, wherein its earnings and revenues surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate as well as improved year over year.
Quarterly earnings of $1.44 per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.42 by 1.4%. Earnings rose 20% from $1.20 a year earlier.
Revenues of $1.43 billion surpassed the consensus mark of $1.32 billion by 8.3% and increased 18.2% year over year. Higher truck rates and modest load growth drove the top line, with truck revenue per load climbing 17% year over year.

LSTR's Truck Business Powers Revenue Growth
Truck transportation revenues increased 19.3% year over year to $1.33 billion and represented 93% of total revenues. The number of truckloads rose 1.9% year over year to 510,250, while revenue per truckload increased to $2,614 from $2,234.
Van-equipment revenues grew 21.4% year over year to $717.51 million, supported by a 4.8% year-over-year increase in loads and a 15.8% rise in revenue per load. Unsided and platform revenues increased 22.8% year over year to $492.17 million as loads rose 2.4% and revenue per load jumped 19.9%.
Consumer durables remained the largest market served, accounting for 28.3% of transportation logistics revenues. Revenues from that market increased 24% year over year, while energy revenues surged 76%. Building products revenues rose 24% year over year, machinery revenues increased 17% and automotive revenues advanced 5%.
Landstar's Other Services Deliver Mixed Results
Rail intermodal revenues increased 26% year over year to $27.76 million. Rail loads rose 9% year over year to 8,520, while revenue per load increased 15.7% to $3,258, providing growth from both volume and pricing.
Ocean and air-cargo revenues declined 2.1% year over year to $49.74 million as a 3.8% year-over-year decrease in loads offset a 1.8% increase in revenue per load. Other truck transportation revenues fell 1.6% year over year to $99.07 million.
Less-than-truckload revenues edged down 0.7% year over year to $25.12 million. A 24.9% reduction in loadings more than offset a 32.1% improvement in revenue per load, reflecting a sizable shift in the mix of shipments handled during the quarter.
LSTR's Profitability Improves Despite Insurance Pressure
Gross profit increased 21.1% year over year to $132.34 million, and gross margin expanded 20 basis points from the year-ago reported quarter to 9.2%. Variable contribution, which excludes purchased transportation and agent commissions, rose 17% year over year to $199.43 million. The related margin contracted 20 basis points from the year-ago reported quarter to 13.9%.
Insurance and claims expense increased 29.3% year over year to $39.36 million, mainly due to unfavorable development of prior-year claims. Selling, general and administrative expenses rose 22.4% year over year to $68.19 million, partly limiting operating leverage despite strong revenue growth.
Landstar's Capacity Trends Support Freight Demand
The company added a net 68 trucks provided by business capacity owners during the quarter, its strongest quarterly increase since the first quarter of 2022. BCO trucks totaled 8,544 at the second-quarter end.
BCO-hauled loads increased 10.1% year over year to 224,600, while revenues generated through BCO capacity rose 22% year over year to $563.07 million. The stronger utilization of this dedicated capacity supported Landstar's truck performance.
Management said that truck volumes and revenue per load outpaced normal seasonal patterns. July truckloads were about 5% above the prior-year level, while truck revenue per load was approximately 26% higher, indicating continued momentum entering the third quarter.
LSTR's Balance Sheet Remains Strong
At the end of second-quarter 2026, Landstar had cash and cash equivalents of $294.35 million compared with $353.25 million recorded at the prior-quarter end. Additionally, long-term debt (excluding current maturities) totaled $42.08 million at the end of the second quarter compared with $43.14 million at the prior-quarter end.
Cash flow from operations totaled $27.8 million in the first half, while capital expenditures were $8.7 million and free cash flow was $19.1 million. First-half free cash flow declined from $58.4 million reported in the second quarter of 2025.
Dividend Hike Update & Share Buybacks
Concurrent with its second-quarter 2026 earnings release, Landstar’s board of directors approved a dividend hike of 10%, thereby raising its quarterly cash dividend to 44 cents per share ($1.76 annualized) from 40 cents ($1.60 annualized). The raised dividend will be paid out on Sept. 9, 2026, to shareholders of record at the close of business on Aug. 18. The move reflects LSTR’s intention to utilize free cash to enhance its shareholders’ returns.

Landstar did not purchase shares in the second quarter of 2026. However, during the first half of 2026, Landstar purchased 150,923 shares of its common stock for $22.6 million. Overall, Landstar returned nearly $120 million to shareholders through dividends ($95.3 million) and share repurchases ($24.1 million) during the first half of 2026.

Landstar Q2 Earnings & Revenues Top Estimates, Improve Year Over Year

GE Aerospace trades at a premium due to recurring revenue expectations, while Delta is priced as a highly cyclical stock.
Delta Air Lines has diversified its revenue beyond main cabin ticketing, and in doing so made its revenue streams a lot less cyclical.
The valuation discrepancy between GE Aerospace (NYSE: GE) and Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) speaks volumes about how investors view the commercial aerospace industry. While that view has historical precedent, I think the industry has changed, and the market is at least mispricing Delta Air Lines.
How the market thinks about the commercial aerospace industry
The chart below goes a long way to explaining matters. Network airlines like Delta and United Airlines are trading on very attractive valuations relative to aerospace equipment supplier GE Aerospace. The interesting thing is that GE, and its joint venture with Safran, CFM International, are leading players in the commercial engine market that powers airlines' flight departures, so why the valuation discrepancy between the main users of aircraft engines and the key supplier of them?

The commercial aerospace market in history
The answer lies in the traditional cyclicality of commercial airlines and their historical inability to generate the return on invested capital necessary to cover their cost of capital, due to the industry's continuous boom-and-bust cycles. When the going is good, airlines traditionally rush to build capacity and expand routes, only to eventually walk into a slowdown, burdened with relatively high fixed costs that push them to maintain capacity while hoping for a rebound.
Unfortunately, these dynamics have led to wild swings in profitability. While you might think the capital markets would be wary of the industry, the reality is that the debt is backed by credible assets: the aircraft.
As such, it's traditionally been a great market for bondholders and equipment suppliers, who benefit from the transfer of capital from bond and equity markets to airline industry assets, but a lousy one for equity holders. Warren Buffett himself is on record decrying investing in airlines, although interestingly, Berkshire Hathaway has taken a stake in Delta since Buffett handed over control to Greg Abel.
Why the market prices in a premium for GE Aerospace over Delta Air Lines
As such, the market accords GE Aerospace a premium valuation as it believes its growing installed base of aircraft engines will generate highly lucrative recurring services revenue, as aircraft engines can be used for over 40 years. In contrast, Delta Air Lines is rated lower because the market is pricing in the traditional volatility and cyclicality of its earnings.
Delta Air Lines' stock is attractive
While GE Aerospace's valuation arguably bakes in positive assumptions about long-term growth, Delta Air Lines' valuation looks too generous, not least because the airline has made great strides in diversifying its income streams away from an overreliance on main cabin ticketing.
For example, in the recently reported quarter, Delta's premium cabin revenue of $6.92 billion exceeded its main cabin revenue of $6.85 billion. In addition, its loyalty travel awards revenue of $1.25 billion and travel-related services revenue (ancillary and non-ticket) of $589 million meant that less than 44% of its $15.6 billion in passenger revenue came from the main cabin. Throw in "other" revenue (which contains a significant portion of co-branded credit card remuneration), which grew a whopping 50% to $3.9 billion in the quarter.
Whichever way you look at it, Delta is no longer an airline reliant on cyclical main cabin revenue. Therefore, it deserves a valuation closer to the long-term growth potential the market believes in for GE Aerospace.

Delta's Profits vs. GE's Premiums: Is the Market Mispricing These 2 Stocks?

United Airlines Holdings (UAL) has a balanced investment setup after a strong revenue quarter. Demand, premium revenue and loyalty trends support the recovery case, but fuel and labor costs are pressuring margins.
The stock’s appeal depends on whether United Airlines can turn revenue strength into steadier earnings expansion. Rising estimates and liquidity help, while execution risk keeps the case from looking clear-cut.
UAL’s Earnings Beat Masks Profit Pressure
United Airlines reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.99 per share, above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.92. Still, earnings declined 48.6% year over year as higher fuel costs weighed on profitability.
United Airlines Holdings Inc Price and EPS Surprise
Adjusted operating income fell 46.3% to $951 million. Adjusted operating margin narrowed 6.2 percentage points to 5.4%, showing that the earnings beat did not erase the pressure from cost inflation.
United Airlines’ Outlook Supports Recovery
United Airlines now expects 2026 adjusted earnings of $9-$11 per share. For the third quarter, adjusted earnings are projected to be in the range of $2.50-$3.50 per share, based on an assumed all-in fuel price of about $3.69 per gallon.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for current-year earnings has increased 4.7% in the past four weeks. Management also expects third- and fourth-quarter total revenue per available seat mile growth to exceed the second quarter’s 12.1% increase.
UAL’s Valuation Offers a Mixed Signal
UAL trades at 0.54X forward 12-month price-to-sales, close to 0.53X for the airline sub-industry. The multiple is also above United Airlines' five-year median of 0.33X, limiting the argument that the stock is uniformly cheap.
The forward price-to-earnings ratio of 9.4 and PEG ratio of 0.9 add support to the valuation case. Delta Air Lines DAL and American Airlines Group AAL remain useful peer comparisons for investors weighing airline demand, pricing and cost exposure across the group. Delta Air Lines operates a broad global network, while American Airlines Group is the parent of American Airlines and trades under AAL.
United Airlines Has Limited Target Upside
United Airlines' $131 price target compares with the reported share price of $120.57. That implies positive but moderate appreciation potential from the cited level.
The modest spread puts more weight on execution. Continued earnings delivery, fare realization and fuel-cost recovery are central to whether UAL becomes more attractive from here.
UAL’s Balance Sheet Adds Flexibility and Risk
United Airlines ended the second quarter with $19.6 billion of available liquidity and trailing 12-month net leverage of 2.2 times. That liquidity gives the airline room to fund fleet and customer-facing investments while managing cyclical swings.
Debt remains part of the risk profile. Debt, finance lease obligations and other financial liabilities stood at $26.46 billion, making balance-sheet discipline important as United Airlines works through fuel volatility and capital spending needs.
United Airlines’ Scores Favor Selective Patience
The bottom line: United Airlines has revenue momentum, a reasonable valuation and improving estimates, but margin compression keeps the investment case mixed. Fuel, labor and execution risks still matter.
