CSX Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, provides rail-based freight transportation services. The company offers rail services; and transportation of intermodal containers and trailers, as well as other transportation services, such as rail-to-truck transfers and bulk commodity operations. It also transports chemicals, agricultural and food products, minerals, automotive, forest products, fertilizers, and metals and equipment; and coal, coke, and iron ore to electricity-generating power plants, steel manufacturers, and industrial plants, as well as exports coal to deep-water port facilities. In addition, the company provides intermodal services through a network of approximately 30 terminals transporting manufactured consumer goods in containers; and drayage services, including the pickup and delivery of intermodal shipments. It serves the automotive industry with distribution centers and storage locations, as well as connects non-rail served customers through transferring products, such as plastics and ethanol from rail to trucks. The company operates approximately 20,000 route mile rail network, which serves various population centers in 26 states east of the Mississippi River, the District of Columbia, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, as well as owns and leases approximately 3,500 locomotives. It serves production and distribution facilities through track connections. CSX Corporation was incorporated in 1978 and is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida.

Top Stock Reports for Caterpillar, Texas Instruments & Boeing

Norfolk Southern Corporation NSC posted earnings (excluding 22 cents from non-recurring items) of $2.65 per share for the first quarter of 2026, topping the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.51. The adjusted figure was down 1.5% from $2.69 a year ago.
Railway operating revenues were $3.0 billion, edging past the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.99 billion and rising 0.2% year over year. The adjusted operating ratio (operating expenses as a % of revenues) in the quarter landed at 68.7%, as higher costs and fuel headwinds weighed on profitability. The year-ago value of the metric was 67.9%. A lower value of the metric is preferable.

NSC Navigates Volatile Volumes and Weather Disruptions
First-quarter performance reflected a mixed demand and operating backdrop. Management pointed to volatile volumes, severe winter weather and a sharp rise in fuel prices in March, but noted that service execution improved as conditions normalized late in the quarter.
The volume decline was modest at 1% year over year, suggesting a relatively steady demand base even amid macro uncertainty. As conditions improved, the railroad said it captured momentum exiting the quarter, underscoring the strength of the operating foundation. In the market outlook, the company also flagged that the competitive environment following its merger announcement is expected to pressure volumes in the short to medium term.
Norfolk Southern Mix Shows Resilience Across Segments
Merchandise remained the largest contributor, with revenues rising 1% year over year to $1.88 billion on a 1% increase in units. Revenue per unit for the franchise was essentially flat year over year, indicating stable pricing and mix despite a choppy backdrop.
Intermodal revenues dipped 1% to $749 million as units declined 4%, though revenue per unit improved 3%. Coal revenues slipped 2% to $364 million, even as volumes increased 9%, as revenue per unit fell 9%, reflecting weaker realization.
NSC Profitability Reflects Merger and Incident Impacts
On a GAAP basis, earnings were $2.43 per share compared with $3.31 in the year-ago period, while income from railway operations fell 23% to $877 million. Operating expenses rose 15% to $2.12 billion, caused in part by $52 million of merger-related expenses and $10 million of net expenses tied to the Eastern Ohio incident.
Excluding merger-related costs and the incident impacts, adjusted income from railway operations was $939 million, down 2% year over year. The adjusted expense base was $2.06 billion, up 1%, as productivity gains partially offset inflation and higher fuel costs.
Norfolk Southern Cash Use Tilts Toward Investment and Dividends
NSC, currently carrying a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $1.34 billion, down from $1.53 billion at the end of fiscal 2025. Long-term debt was $16.49 billion at March 31, 2026, and total debt stood at $17.10 billion, keeping leverage broadly steady. Operating cash flow was $344 million in the first three months of 2026 compared with $950 million a year ago, reflecting working-capital movement and lower earnings. Norfolk Southern invested $382 million in property additions and returned $303 million to shareholders through dividends, while it did not repurchase shares during the quarter.
NSC Reiterates 2026 Expense and Capex Guardrails
Looking ahead, management reiterated its 2026 framework centered on safety, consistent service and disciplined execution. Adjusted operating expense is still expected in a range of $8.2 billion to $8.4 billion, with the company noting that prolonged elevated fuel prices could influence the outlook.
Capital spending is projected at $1.9 billion for 2026, representing a planned reduction of about $300 million, or 14%, from 2025 levels. The company also highlighted a new partnership with Jaguar Transport Holdings, as part of its freight growth focus, emphasizing deal structures and capabilities aimed at creating added customer value.
Q1 Performances of Other Transportation Companies
CSX Corporation’s CSX first-quarter 2026 earnings per share of 43 cents surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 39 cents and increased 26% on a year-over-year basis. Results were aided by revenue growth and a reduction in operating expenses.
Total revenues of $3.48 billion missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.51 billion. The top line increased 2% year over year on the back of higher merchandise pricing, intermodal volume growth, higher domestic coal revenues and increased fuel surcharge revenues. These were partially offset by a decrease in export coal revenues, including the impact of lower benchmark rates.
J.B. Hunt Transport Services JBHT posted first-quarter 2026 earnings per share of $1.49, up 27% from $1.17 a year ago. The result topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 4 cents.
Operating revenues totaled $3.06 billion, rising 4.6% year over year. Revenues beat the consensus mark of $2.94 billion, resulting in a 3.9% surprise, as demand proved resilient across several service offerings, led by Intermodal volume growth and higher revenue per load in select highway-related businesses.

Norfolk Southern Q1 Earnings & Revenues Top Estimates, Expenses Up Y/Y

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Thursday closed down -0.41%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.36%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.57%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) fell -0.42%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) fell -0.59%.
Stock indexes erased early gains on Thursday and settled lower as peace talks with Iran remain in limbo. The US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The US said it was waiting for a response from Iran before peace talks could restart, and Iran said it will not resume negotiations while a US naval blockade on its ports is in place. Stock losses accelerated on Thursday amid signs the war in Iran will persist after President Trump said a deal with Iran will only be made "when it's appropriate and good" for the US and its allies.

Stock index initially moved higher on Thursday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting new all-time highs amid a rally in chipmakers that boosted the broader market. Texas Instruments rose more than +19% to lead chipmakers higher after reporting strong earnings. Other positive earnings were also supportive of the market, with United Rentals up +22% and Comcast up more than +7% after reporting better-than-expected Q1 revenue. Also, Keurig Dr. Pepper rose more than +7% after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 net sales.
The weakness in software stocks on Thursday was a negative factor for the broader market, with ServiceNow falling more than -17% after reporting disappointing earnings and saying the war in the Middle East has delayed some sales deals. Also, IBM fell more than -8% after reporting Q1 results that featured an underwhelming read for its software business.
Thursday’s US economic news was mixed for stocks. Weekly initial unemployment claims rose by +6,000 to 214,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of 210,000. Also, the Mar Chicago Fed national activity index fell -0.23 to a 4-month low of -0.20, weaker than expectations of -0.13. Conversely, the Apr S&P manufacturing PMI rose +1.7 to 54.0, stronger than expectations of 52.5 and the strongest level in nearly 4 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) rose more than +3% on Thursday as the Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. Gains in crude oil accelerated on Thursday after Axios reported that Iran laid more mines in the Strait of Hormuz this week, and President Trump ordered the US Navy to "shoot and kill" any Iranian boats laying mines with "no hesitation." The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait.
Earnings season continues this week. So far, 81% of the 123 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
The markets are discounting a 1% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the April 28-29 policy meeting.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Thursday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2-week low and closed down -0.19%. China's Shanghai Composite fell from a 1.25-month high and closed down -0.32%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 fell from a record high and closed down -0.75%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Thursday closed down -7.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +1.9 bp to 4.322%. Jun T-notes fell to a 1.5-week low on Thursday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 1.5-week high of 4.349%. Soaring crude oil prices on Thursday pushed inflation expectations higher and weighed on T-notes, as the 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 5-week high of 2.429%. Losses in T-notes were limited after weekly US jobless claims rose more than expected, a dovish factor for Fed policy.
European government bond yields moved higher on Thursday. The 10-year German bund yield rose +0.1 bp to 3.009%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose to a 3.5-week high of 4.973% and finished up by +2.9 bp to 4.939%.
The Eurozone Apr S&P manufacturing PMI unexpectedly rose +0.6 to 52.2, stronger than expectations of a decline to 50.9 and the fastest pace of expansion in nearly four years. However, the Apr composite PMI fell -2.1 to 48.6, weaker than expectations of 50.1 and the weakest level in 17 months.
Eurozone Mar new car registrations rose +12.5% y/y to 1.158 million units, the biggest increase in nearly two years.
The UK Apr S&P manufacturing PMI unexpectedly rose +2.6 to 53.6, stronger than expectations of a decline to 50.3 and the fastest pace of expansion in nearly four years.
Swaps are discounting a 9% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on April 30.
US Stock Movers
ServiceNow (NOW) closed down more than -17% to lead software stocks lower and lead losers in the S&P 500 after cutting its full-year subscription adjusted gross margin forecast to 81.5% from 82%, weaker than the consensus of 82.1%. Also, Workday (WDAY) closed down more than -9% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Salesforce (CRM) closed down more than -8% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials. In addition, IBM (IBM) and Atlassian (TEAM) closed down more than -8%, and Intuit (INTU), Adobe Systems (ADBE), and Autodesk (ADSK) closed down more than -6%. Finally, Oracle (ORCL) closed down more than -5%, and Microsoft (MSFT) closed down -4%.
Texas Instruments (TXN) closed up more than +19% to lead chipmakers higher and gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q1 revenue of $4.83 billion, better than the consensus of $4.53 billion, and forecasting Q2 revenue of $5.00 billion to $5.40 billion, well above the consensus of $4.85 billion. Also, ON Semiconductor (ON) and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed up more than +9%, and NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) closed up more th +6%. In addition, Analog Devices (ADI) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +5%, and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed up more than +3%. Finally, Intel (INTC) closed up more than 2%.
ASGN Inc (ASGN) closed down more than -51% after reporting Q1 revenue of $968.3 million, below the consensus of $972.9 million, and forecasting Q2 revenue of $970 million to $1.00 billion, weaker than the consensus of $1.02 billion.
Medpace Holdings (MEDP) closed down more than -22% after forecasting full-year EPS of $16.68 to $17.50, the midpoint below the consensus of $17.12.

Comcast (CMCSA) closed up more than +7% after reporting Q1 revenue of $31.46 billion, stronger than the consensus of $30.35 billion.

Stocks Settle Lower on US-Iran Stalemate

In the latest look at the underlying components of the S&P 500 ordered by largest market capitalization, Sherwin-Williams Co (Symbol: SHW) has taken over the #142 spot from CSX Corp (Symbol: CSX), according to The Online Investor.
Market capitalization is an important data point for investors to keep an eye on, for various reasons. The most basic reason is that it gives a true comparison of the value attributed by the stock market to a given company's stock. Many beginning investors look at one stock trading at $10 and another trading at $20 and mistakenly think the latter company is worth twice as much — that of course is a completely meaningless comparison without knowing how many shares of each company exist. But comparing market capitalization (factoring in those share counts) creates a true "apples-to-apples" comparison of the value of two stocks. In the case of Sherwin-Williams Co (Symbol: SHW), the market cap is now $82.90 billion, versus CSX Corp (Symbol: CSX) at $80.35 billion.

Sherwin-Williams Takes Over #142 Spot From CSX

CSX Corporation CSX reported mixed first-quarter 2026 results wherein earnings surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate while revenues missed the mark.
Quarterly earnings per share of 43 cents surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 39 cents and increased 26% on a year-over-year basis. Results were aided by revenue growth and a reduction in operating expenses.
Total revenues of $3.48 billion missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.51 billion. The top line increased 2% year over year on the back of higher merchandise pricing, intermodal volume growth, higher domestic coal revenue and increased fuel surcharge revenue. These were partially offset by a decrease in export coal revenue, including the impact of lower benchmark rates.
CSX Corporation Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
First-quarter operating income increased 20% year over year to $1.25 billion. Total expenses decreased 6% year over year. CSX’s operating margin during the March quarter rose to 36% from 30.4% in the year-ago quarter. Total volumes inched up 3% year over year, boosted by intermodal volumes.
Q1 Segmental Performance of CSX
Merchandise revenues grew 2% year over year to $2.18 billion (matched with our estimate figure) in the reported quarter. Merchandise volumes rose marginally to $631 million. Segmental revenue per unit inched up 2% year over year.
Intermodal revenues increased 5% year over year to $518 million (below our estimate of $551.5 million). Segmental volumes increased 6% while revenue per unit was down 1% year over year.
Coal revenues slid 1% year over year to $458 million in the reported quarter. Coal volumes inched down 1% year over year, while segmental revenue per unit fell marginally.
Trucking revenues totaled $202 million (above our estimate of $183.4 million), flat year over year. Other revenues rose 1% year over year to $116 million in the reported quarter.
CSX’s Liquidity
CSX exited the first quarter of 2026 with cash and cash equivalents of $964 million compared with $670 million at the end of the prior quarter. Long-term debt of $18.2 billion was flat sequentially.
CSX's 2026 Guidance
For 2026, CSX now expects mid-single digit revenue growth (including fuel, based on the current forward curve for diesel) compared with the prior guidance of low single-digit revenue growth.
Operating margin expansion is now anticipated toward the higher end of the 200-300 basis point range, while previously it was expected to be around 200-300 basis points.
Free Cash flow is now anticipated to increase more than 60% compared with the prior expectation of growth of at least 50%.
CSX continues to expect capital expenditures to be below $2.4 billion.

Q1 Performances of Other Transportation Companies
Delta Air Lines (DAL) reported first-quarter 2026 earnings (excluding $1.08 from non-recurring items) of 64 cents per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 61 cents. Earnings increased 39.1% on a year-over-year basis due to high labor costs. Adjusted revenues in the March-end quarter were $14.2 billion, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $14 billion and increasing on a year-over-year basis.
United Airlines Holdings, Inc. (UAL) reported solid first-quarter 2026 results wherein the company’s earnings and revenues beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate as well as improved on a year-over-year basis.
UAL's first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) (excluding 95 cents from non-recurring items) of $1.19 surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.08 and increased 30.8% on a year-over-year basis. The reported figure lies within the guided range of $1.00-$1.50.
Operating revenues of $14.6 billion outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $14.3 billion and increased 10.5% year over year. Passenger revenues (which accounted for 90.1% of the top line) increased 11% year over year to $13.1 billion. UAL flights transported 42,486 passengers in the first quarter, up 4.1% year over year.
Cargo revenues fell 1.6% year over year to $422 million. Revenues from other sources rose 10.5% year over year to $1.02 billion.
J.B. Hunt Transport Services JBHT posted first-quarter 2026 earnings per share of $1.49, up 27% from $1.17 a year ago. The result topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate by $0.04, a 2.8% surprise.
Operating revenues totaled $3.06 billion, rising 4.6% year over year. Revenues beat the consensus mark of $2.94 billion, resulting in a 3.9% surprise, as demand proved resilient across several service offerings, led by Intermodal volume growth and higher revenue per load in select highway-related businesses.

CSX Q1 Earnings Beat Estimates, Revenues Lag, 2026 View Raised

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.07%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.05%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.03%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are up +0.07%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are up +0.10%.
Stock indexes recovered from early losses today and are trading slightly higher as a rally in chipmakers gives the broader market a boost. Texas Instruments is up more than +16% to lead chipmakers higher after reporting strong earnings. Other positive earnings results are also liftin stocks, with United Rentals up +20% and Comcast up more than +7% after reporting better-than-expected Q1 revenue. Also, Keurig Dr. Pepper is up more than +6% after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 net sales.

Stock indexes initially moved lower today as peace talks with Iran remain in limbo. The US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The US said it was waiting for a response from Iran before peace talks could restart, and Iran said it will not resume negotiations while a US naval blockade on its ports is in place. Higher crude oil prices are raising inflation expectations and pushing bond yields higher, with the 10-year T-note yield climbing to a 1.5-week high of 4.34%.
The weakness in software stocks is also pressuring the broader market today, with ServiceNow down more than 16% after reporting disappointing earnings and saying the war in the Middle East has delayed some sales deals. Also, IBM is down more than -9% after reporting Q1 results that featured an underwhelming read for its software business.
Today’s US economic news was mixed for stocks. Weekly initial unemployment claims rose by +6,000 to 214,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of 210,000. Also, the Mar Chicago Fed national activity index fell -0.23 to a 4-month low of -0.20, weaker than expectations of -0.13. Conversely, the Apr S&P manufacturing PMI rose +1.7 to 54.0, stronger than expectations of 52.5 and the strongest level in nearly 4 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up nearly +1% today as the Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait.
Earnings season continues this week. So far, 79% of the 101 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
The markets are discounting a 1% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the April 28-29 policy meeting.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2-week low and is down -0.05%. China's Shanghai Composite fell from a 1.25-month high and closed down -0.32%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 fell from a record high and closed down -0.75%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -1 tick. The 10-year T-note yield is up +0.2 bp to 4.305%. Jun T-notes fell to a 1.5-week low today, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 1.5-week high of 4.337%. An increase in inflation expectations is weighing on T-notes, as the 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 1-month high of 2.409% today. T-notes recovered most of their losses after weekly US jobless claims rose more than expected, a dovish factor for Fed policy.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +0.5 bp to 3.013%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose to a 3.5-week high of 4.973% and is up by +1.0 bp to 4.920%.
The Eurozone Apr S&P manufacturing PMI unexpectedly rose +0.6 to 52.2, stronger than expectations of a decline to 50.9 and the fastest pace of expansion in nearly four years. However, the Apr composite PMI fell -2.1 to 48.6, weaker than expectations of 50.1 and the weakest level in 17 months.
Eurozone Mar new car registrations rose +12.5% y/y to 1.158 million units, the biggest increase in nearly two years.
The UK Apr S&P manufacturing PMI unexpectedly rose +2.6 to 53.6, stronger than expectations of a decline to 50.3 and the fastest pace of expansion in nearly four years.
Swaps are discounting a 10% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on April 30.
US Stock Movers
Texas Instruments (TXN) is up more than +16% to lead chipmakers higher and gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q1 revenue of $4.83 billion, better than the consensus of $4.53 billion, and forecasting Q2 revenue of $5.00 billion to $5.40 billion, well above the consensus of $4.85 billion. Also, ON Semiconductor (ON) is up more than +9%, and Microchip Technology (MCHP) is up more than +7%. In addition, NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) and Analog Devices (ADI) are up more than +6% and Marvell Technology (MRVL) and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) are more than +4%. Finally, Intel (INTC) is up more than 2%.

Finally, Intuit (INTU) and Adobe Systems (ADBE) are down more than -7%, Autodesk (ADSK) is down more than -6%, and Oracle (ORCL) is down more than -4%.

Stocks Pressured as Peace Talks with Iran Remain in Limbo

In trading on Thursday, railroads shares were relative leaders, up on the day by about 3.3%. Leading the group were shares of CSX, up about 6% and shares of Union Pacific up about 5.6% on the day.
Also showing relative strength are waste management shares, up on the day by about 2.8% as a group, led by Waste Connections, trading up by about 7.3% and Casella Waste Systems, trading up by about 4.3% on Thursday.
