The Retail Bank segment provides personal financial services, such as consumer lending, consumer deposit gathering, and mortgage loan origination; and various consumer products that include deposit accounts, installment loans, credit cards, student loans, home equity lines of credit, and residential mortgage loans. The Wealth Management segment offers products and services comprising financial planning, trust and fiduciary services, investment management and advisory, brokerage, private banking, and business transition planning services for affluents, high-net worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families, business owners, and executives, and institutional clients. The Finance segment comprises securities portfolio, and asset and liability management activities. It operates in Texas, California, Michigan, Arizona, and Florida, the United States; and Canada and Mexico. The company was formerly known as DETROITBANK Corporation and changed its name to Comerica Incorporated in July 1982. Comerica Incorporated was founded in 1849 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

Oracle faded after a strong rally
The tech company Oracle is not one of the "Magnificent Seven," but it has emerged as a strong beneficiary of artificial intelligence (AI), thanks to its specialized data centers that contain huge clusters of graphics processing units (GPUs) to train large language models (LLMs) that power AI.
In September, the company reported strong earnings for the first quarter of its fiscal 2026, along with blowout guidance. Remaining performance obligations increased 359% year over year to $455 billion, as it signed data center agreements with major hyperscalers, including OpenAI.
Management then said it expects to generate $18 billion in cloud infrastructure revenue in fiscal 2026, followed by $32 billion, $73 billion, $114 billion, and then $144 billion annually over the next four fiscal years, in that order. The stock popped about 40% at the time.
But Oracle has largely retraced these gains, as concerns about AI valuations and other obstacles proliferated. Reports about higher costs for its AI infrastructure build-out and thinner margins have contributed to the struggles. It appears that Tepper has concerns about the company as well because Appaloosa sold all of its 150,000 shares in the third quarter.
Buying the sector that Wall Street is bullish on
In the third quarter, Appaloosa piled into the financials sector, snapping up shares and initiating positions in several regional banks and other related financial companies. Its purchases were:
925,000 shares of the bank core-processing technology company Fiserv.
1.4 million shares in Truist Financial.
Over 2 million shares in KeyCorp.
600,000 shares in Citizens Financial Group.
462,500 shares in Comerica.
195,000 shares in Western Alliance Bancorp.
285,000 shares in Zions Bancorporation.
The financials sector has somewhat struggled this year, with both the large-bank Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund and the State Street SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF trailing the broader market. But many Wall Street analysts are bullish on financials. Morgan Stanley's chief U.S. equity strategist, Mike Wilson, recently said his team is overweight in financials, while SoFi's head of investment strategy, Liz Thomas, has also remained bullish on the sector.
I would agree that the outlook for financials is strong. Several of the regional banks that Tepper invested in may ultimately be acquired, as regional banks require significantly more scale to compete with the large money-center banks. In fact, Comerica was acquired in October, so Tepper and Appaloosa may have enjoyed a nice premium on that one.
Furthermore, banks are poised for deregulation. Specifically, the Federal Reserve may lower regulatory capital requirements, the capital that banks must hold for unexpected losses.
The less capital that banks are required to hold, the more they can deploy into lending to boost returns, as well as shareholder distributions. Since the Great Recession, bank lending has really been minimal, which is part of what led to the rise of private credit. Lower capital requirements could lead to increased bank lending.
While historically strong credit is likely to normalize some, there is no evidence that credit quality in the banking system has experienced significant deterioration. For all of these reasons, I am bullish on the sector.

Billionaire David Tepper Dumped Appaloosa's Stake in Oracle and Is Piling Into a Sector That Wall Street Thinks Will Outperform

State Street Corporation STT has entered a strategic co-operation agreement with Albilad Capital to support the latter’s securities services offerings in Saudi Arabia, reaching a milestone in its long-term investment and commitment to the Kingdom’s growing financial sector.
Albilad Capital is Saudi Arabia’s leading financial institution that specializes in securities services and asset management.
The agreement aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which focuses on creating a diversified and resilient economy underpinned by a modern financial infrastructure. By integrating State Street’s global product suite with Albilad Capital’s deep local expertise, the partnership aims to enhance operational efficiency, improve market competitiveness and accelerate the development of the Kingdom’s capital markets.
Notably, the signing ceremony, held in Riyadh on Oct. 29, 2025, was attended by senior executives from both firms and other dignitaries, marking a new chapter in Saudi Arabia’s financial market development.
STT Aims to Deepen Presence in Saudi Arabia
State Street has been active in the Kingdom for more than 25 years, establishing local operations in 2020. The firm currently manages $127 billion in assets under custody and/or administration and $60 billion in assets under management for clients in the region.
This alliance sets the stage for future expansion. Oliver Berger, the head of strategic growth markets at State Street, described the agreement as “the first step in a long-term strategic relationship,” adding that it will pave the way for introducing additional investment services, including leveraging both firms’ ETF capabilities to attract foreign direct investment into the Kingdom.
Commenting on the partnership, Ron O’Hanley, the chairman and CEO of State Street, emphasized the firm’s intent to expand its presence and deliver world-class securities services in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets. He noted that the alliance would allow both companies to meet rising demand for sophisticated investment solutions, while helping the Kingdom advance toward becoming a leading global financial hub.
State Street’s Other Efforts to Expand Global Presence
STT has continuously been taking efforts to deepen its presence globally through buyouts and collaborations. It has acquired its long-standing partner, PriceStats, a top provider of daily global inflation data generated from digitally collected prices on millions of consumer products.
Last month, it acquired global custody and related businesses outside of Japan from Mizuho Financial Group, Inc. In May 2025, it collaborated with smallcase to cater to investors in India seeking global exposure, while in April, the company partnered with Ethic Inc. to offer customized investment solutions to institutional and financial intermediary clients.
Last year, State Street joined forces with Bridgewater Associates to boost its core alternative investment strategies, partnered with Apollo Global to enhance investors' accessibility to private markets, acquired a 5% stake in Australia-based Raiz Invest Limited, and partnered with Taurus and CF Global Trading.
Moreover, STT restructured the nearly 20-year-old European component of the International Financial Data Services LP joint venture (JV) arrangement in Luxembourg and Ireland, and consolidated its India-based operations to assume full ownership of its two JVs.
These efforts are expected to result in revenue and cost benefits for the company. Over the last four years (2020-2024), STT’s revenues witnessed a compound annual growth rate of 2.7%, with the upward trend continuing in the first nine months of 2025.

STT Partners With Albilad Capital to Fortify Saudi Securities Market

Huntington Bancshares HBAN has agreed to acquire several business units of Janney Montgomery Scott LLC, a financial services firm majority-owned by KKR & Co. Inc. KKR, as part of a push to expand its capital markets operations, according to a Bloomberg News report published on MSN.
Under the terms of the deal, Huntington will purchase Janney’s merger and acquisition advisory, public finance, and fixed-income sales and trading units. These businesses will be integrated into Huntington’s subsidiaries, including Capstone Partners, its investment banking advisory arm, and Huntington Securities, which focuses on capital markets and trading services.
Financial details of the transaction were kept under wraps.
Rationale Behind HBAN Acquisition Deal
The planned acquisition will enhance HBAN’s advisory and capital markets capabilities, while expanding its reach with institutional and public-sector clients. The move marks a significant step in its long-term strategy to diversify revenue sources beyond traditional lending and deposit services.

Earlier this month, HBAN has entered a definitive agreement to acquire Cadence Bank, a regional financial institution with $53 billion in assets headquartered in Houston, TX, and Tupelo, MS. The deal expands Huntington’s footprint across several high-growth markets, including Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Atlanta, Nashville, Orlando and Tampa, providing a strong foundation for organic investment and long-term growth. In March 2024, HBAN announced plans to expand its commercial banking business in Texas, following its footprint extension in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in early 2024.
As part of its ongoing geographic and vertical expansion, the company broadened its middle-market banking presence in Texas. In January 2025, Huntington introduced two verticals — the Financial Institutions Group and the Aerospace & Defense Group — as part of its ongoing geographic and vertical expansion. Both verticals offer advisory services and corporate banking solutions, including liquidity and treasury management, capital markets, and corporate finance.
These efforts are expected to broaden HBAN’s market presence and attract customers from across the region.

Huntington to Acquire Key Units From KKR-Owned Janney Scott

The Cincinnati-based Fifth Third Bancorp (NASDAQ: FITB) shook up the regional banking landscape a month ago by announcing a $10.9 billion acquisition of the Dallas, Texas-based Comerica (NYSE: CMA). The all-stock deal continues a run of bank deals that are starting to kick into high gear as the Trump administration opens the flood gates for bank mergers and acquisitions (M&A).
The deal will create the ninth-largest bank in the U.S., with $288 billion in assets. The acquisition gives Fifth Third the No. 1 retail-deposit franchise in Michigan, while also helping the bank continue its expansion in fast-growing markets such as Texas.

Once the acquisition closes, the pro forma bank will have over two-thirds of its loan book in commercial real estate and commercial and industrial loans. It will also run other strong fee businesses in commercial payments and asset and wealth management.
Last year, Comerica lost a contract with the U.S. Department of Treasury managing the agency's Direct Express program, where it helped the agency distribute federal benefits through pre-paid cards. The contract provided the bank with roughly $3 billion in non-interest-bearing deposits, essentially free funding that the bank could use to originate loans or buy securities. The Treasury Department then awarded the contract to Fifth Third.
Why the deal makes sense for investors
Most bank investors aren't big fans of bank acquisitions and mergers, especially large ones like this. They can be difficult to integrate and typically involve the immediate destruction of the acquirer's equity, which must be earned back through strong execution.
But Fifth Third said the acquisition of Comerica will not be dilutive to tangible book value or the bank's net worth, which is a big positive. Fifth Third plans to cut about 35% of Comerica's expenses, which is high but not out of the ordinary when it comes to bank acquisitions. The acquisition is also expected to be 9% accretive to earnings in 2027 and result in a 22% internal rate of return, assuming no revenue synergies.
Management also expects the acquisition to improve Fifth Third's return profile, boosting the bank's return on assets to 1.3% to 1.4% and return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) to an attractive 19% or higher.
The deal doesn't come without challenges. Fifth Third will face the difficult task of integrating two large and sprawling institutions. Management will also attempt to fix issues at Comerica, a bank that hasn't grown loan balances in roughly 10 years. However, banks of Fifth Third's size are more or less in no-man's land -- too small to compete with giants like Bank of America but big enough where regulation and tech demands are significant and require more scale.
The time to make a big deal and grow is now when there's a friendly regulatory regime in place that's essentially promoting consolidation within the industry. The fact that Fifth Third made a big deal without destroying tangible book value should be looked upon favorably.

The 3M Company Board of Directors today declared a dividend on the company's common stock of $0.73 per share for the fourth quarter of 2025. The dividend is payable Dec. 12, 2025, to shareholders of record at the close of business on Nov. 14, 2025. 3M has paid dividends to its shareholders without interruption for more than 100 years.
Prudential Financial announced today the declaration of a quarterly dividend of $1.35 per share of Common Stock, payable on December 11, 2025, to shareholders of record at the close of business on November 18, 2025.
The Board of Directors of Comerica declared a quarterly cash dividend for common stock of 71 cents per share. The dividend is payable Jan. 1, 2026, to shareholders of record at the close of business on Dec. 15, 2025.
Enbridge announced that its Board of Directors has declared a quarterly dividend of $0.9425 per common share, payable on December 1, 2025 to shareholders of record on November 14, 2025. The amount of the dividend is consistent with the September 1, 2025 dividend.
Capital One Financial today announced a quarterly dividend of $0.80 per common share payable December 1, 2025, to stockholders of record at the close of business on November 17, 2025. The company has announced dividends on its common stock every quarter since it became an independent company on February 28, 1995.

Huntington Bancshares Incorporated HBAN has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Cadence Bank, a regional financial institution with $53 billion in assets headquartered in Houston, Texas and Tupelo, MS.
The all-stock transaction, valued at approximately $7.4 billion, establishes Huntington’s strategic presence across the South with immediate scale in Texas and Mississippi.
Terms & Financial Details of the HBAN Deal
Under the agreement, Cadence shareholders will receive 2.475 shares of Huntington common stock for each share of Cadence common stock. Based on Huntington’s closing price of $16.07 on Oct. 24, 2025, the deal implies a value of $39.77 per Cadence share.
The transaction is expected to be 10% accretive to Huntington’s earnings per share, mildly dilutive to regulatory capital at close, and 7% dilutive to tangible book value per share, with an earn-back period of about three years, including merger expenses.
The deal, subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals, is anticipated to close in the first quarter of 2026, with system conversion expected in the second quarter of 2026. Following completion, Cadence Bank’s teams and branches will transition to the Huntington brand.

NTRS’ Credit Quality: Mixed Bag
Total allowance for credit losses was $206.7 million, down 6% year over year.
Total non-accrual assets increased to $78.8 million as of Sept. 30, 2025, from $73.1 million in the year-ago period. NTRS reported provision benefits of $17 million in the third quarter compared with a provision for credit losses of $8 million in the year-ago quarter.
Northern Trust’s Capital & Profitability Ratios Decline
Under the Standardized Approach, as of Sept. 30, 2025, the Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio was 12.4%, down from 12.6% in the prior-year quarter. The total capital ratio was 15.1%, down from 15.6% in the year-ago quarter. The Tier 1 leverage ratio was 8.0%, down from 8.1% in the prior-year quarter.
The return on average common equity was 14.8% compared with the year-earlier quarter’s 15.4%.

NTRS Q3 Earnings Beat on Higher NII & AUM Growth Despite Rising Costs

Comerica Incorporated CMA has reported third-quarter 2025 earnings per share (EPS) of $1.35, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.28. In the prior-year quarter, the company reported an EPS of $1.37.
Results have benefited from a rise in net interest income (NII) and deposit balance. Yet, lower loan balances, a decline in non-interest income, a rise in expenses, and weak asset quality were concerning.
Net income attributable to common shareholders was $175 million, which declined 1.1% from the year-ago quarter.
Comerica's Revenues & Expenses Rise
Total quarterly revenues were $838 million, up 3.3% year over year. The top line missed the consensus estimate by 0.7%.
Quarterly NII rose 7.5% on a year-over-year basis to $574 million. The net interest margin increased 29 basis points year over year to 3.09%.
Total non-interest income was $264 million, down 4.7% on a year-over-year basis.
Non-interest expenses totaled $589 million, up 4.8% year over year.
The efficiency ratio was 70.23% compared with the prior-year quarter’s 68.8%. A rise in this ratio indicates declining profitability.
CMA’s Loans Balance Decline & Deposit Rise
As of Sept. 30, 2025, total loans fell marginally on a sequential basis to $50.9 billion. Total deposits rose 4.3% from the previous quarter to $62.6 billion.
Comerica's Credit Quality Deteriorates
The company recorded a provision for credit loss of $22 million in the third quarter compared with $14 million in the year-ago quarter.
The allowance for credit losses was $725 million, which rose marginally year over year.
Total non-performing assets rose 4% year over year to $260 million.
The allowance for credit losses to total loans ratio was 1.43% as of Sept. 30, 2025, unchanged from the year-ago reported level. Also, the company recorded net charge-offs of $32 million, significantly up from $11 million in the year-ago quarter.
CMA's Capital Position Mixed Bag
The total capital ratio was 14.12%, down from 14.29% in the year-ago quarter. The Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio was 11.90%, down from 11.96% in the prior-year quarter.
As of Sept. 30, 2025, CMA's tangible common equity ratio was 8.34%, up from 8.01% in the prior-year quarter.

This month, Comerica entered a definitive merger agreement with Fifth Third Bancorp FITB, under which the latter will acquire CMA in an all-stock transaction valued at $10.9 billion.
The transaction is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2026 and will combine two banking franchises to form the ninth-largest U.S. bank, with nearly $288 billion in assets, $224 billion in deposits, and $174 billion in loans.
The combined entity will operate in 17 of the 20 fastest-growing markets in the country, including key regions in the Southeast, Texas, and California, while reinforcing its leadership in the Midwest. Also, the combined loan book will have a more balanced composition, reducing commercial loan concentration from 44% to 36%. That diversification can prove critical in volatile credit cycles, helping stabilize earnings even if regional economies weaken.

Comerica Q3 Earnings Top Estimates on Higher NII, Provision Up

Fifth Third Bancorp FITB reported third-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of 93 cents, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 87 cents. In the prior-year quarter, the company posted an EPS of 85 cents.
FITB shares rose 2.7% in the early-market trading on better-than-expected results. A full day’s trading session will depict a clearer picture.
Results have benefited from a rise in net interest income (NII), fee income and loan balances. However, higher expenses and weak asset quality were headwinds.
Results included a negative 2-cent impact of certain items. After considering this, the company has reported net income available to common shareholders (GAAP basis) of $608 million, up 14% year over year.
FITB’s Quarterly Revenues & Expenses Rise
Total quarterly revenues (FTE) in the reported quarter were $2.3 billion, which increased 8% year over year. Further, the top line surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.5%.
Fifth Third’s NII (on an FTE basis) was $1.52 billion, up 7% year over year. Our estimate for NII was pegged at $1.51 billion. This improvement was driven by the benefits from proactive deposit and wholesale funding management, decreasing interest-bearing liabilities costs, an improved earning asset mix and the benefit of fixed-rate asset repricing.
The net interest margin (on an FTE basis) increased year over year to 3.13% from 29%. Our estimate for net interest margin was 3.05%.
Non-interest income rose 10% year over year to $781 million. This rise was primarily due to an increase in revenues from wealth and asset management revenues, capital markets fees, and consumer banking revenues. Our estimate for non-interest income was pinned at $769 million.
Non-interest expenses increased 2% year over year to $1.27 billion. The increase was primarily due to a rise in all cost components, except for compensation and benefits, and other non-interest income. Our estimate for the metric was the same as reported.
The efficiency ratio was 54.9%, lower than the year-ago quarter’s 58.2%. A decline in the ratio indicates an improvement in profitability.
FITB Loans & Deposits Balance Increase Sequentially
As of Sept. 30, 2025, portfolio loans and leases rose slightly to $123.1 billion from the previous quarter. Total deposits inched up 1.4% from the previous quarter to $166.6 billion. Our estimates for portfolio loans and leases and deposits were $116.1 billion and $163.7 billion, respectively.
FITB’s Credit Quality Deteriorates
The company has reported a provision for credit losses of $197 million, up 23% from the year-ago quarter. Our estimate for the metric was pinned at $218 million.
Moreover, the total non-performing portfolio loans and leases were $801 million, up 10.5% year over year.
Net charge-offs in the third quarter increased to $339 million or 1.09% of average loans and leases (on an annualized basis) from $142 million or 0.48% in the prior-year quarter. Our estimate for net charge-offs was $144 million.
The total allowance for credit losses declined 1.1% to $2.42 billion year over year. Our estimate for allowance for credit losses was pinned at $2.63 billion.
Fifth Third’s Capital Position Mixed
The Tier 1 risk-based capital ratio was 11.60% compared with 12.07% posted in the prior-year quarter. The CET1 capital ratio was 10.54%, down from 10.75% in the year-ago quarter. The leverage ratio was 9.24% compared with the year-earlier quarter’s 9.11%.
FITB’s Recent Development
This month, FITB entered a definitive merger agreement to acquire Comerica Incorporated CMA. The impending acquisition serves as a strategic acceleration of Fifth Third’s long-term growth plan, enhancing scale, profitability and geographic reach.
This transaction, expected to close at the end of the first quarter of 2026, will bring together two banking franchises to create the ninth-largest U.S. bank with nearly $288 billion in assets, $224 billion in deposits and $174 billion in loans.
Financially, the deal is projected to boost FITB’s earnings per share by 9% by 2027, while driving the combined efficiency ratio into the low-to-mid-50% range, roughly 200 basis points better than the current performance levels.

Fifth Third Q3 Earnings Top Estimates on Higher NII, Stock Gains

(RTTNews) - Comerica Inc. (CMA), a financial services company, on Friday reported that net income attributable to shareholders decreased in the third quarter compared with the previous year.
For the third quarter, net income attributable to common shareholders decreased to $175 million from $177 million in the previous year.
Earnings per share were $1.35 versus $1.33 last year.
Net interest income decreased to $574 million from $534 million in the previous year.
Noninterest income declined to $264 million from $277 million in the prior year.
Total loan increased to 50.76 billion from 50.67 billion in the previous year.
Deposits declined to 62.74 billion from 63.90 billion in the previous year.
