The Cigna Group, together with its subsidiaries, provides insurance and related products and services in the United States. Its Evernorth Health Services segment provides a range of coordinated and point solution health services, including pharmacy benefits, home delivery pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, distribution, and care delivery and management solutions to health plans, employers, government organizations, and health care providers. The company's Cigna Healthcare segment offers medical, pharmacy, behavioral health, dental, and other products and services for insured and self-insured customers; Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Medicare Part D plans for seniors, as well as individual health insurance plans; and health care coverage in its international markets, as well as health care benefits for mobile individuals and employees of multinational organizations. In addition, it offers permanent insurance contracts sold to corporations to provide coverage on the lives of certain employees for financing employer-paid future benefit obligations. The company distributes its products and services through insurance brokers and consultants; directly to employers, unions and other groups, or individuals; and private and public exchanges. The company was formerly known as Cigna Corporation and changed its name to The Cigna Group in February 2023. The Cigna Group was founded in 1792 and is headquartered in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

Noteworthy Monday Option Activity: CI, RDNT, SOFI

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Thursday closed up by +0.21%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up by +1.34%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down by -0.35%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) rose +0.23%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) fell -0.33%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Thursday, with the S&P 500 posting a 6-week high and the Dow Jones Industrials climbing to a new all-time high. The broader market found underlying support on Thursday after bond yields moved lower amid a jump in weekly jobless claims, which is dovish for Fed policy. Also, managed healthcare stocks staged a rally on Thursday, a supportive factor for the overall market, and Visa shares surged more than +6% to boost the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

However, the Nasdaq 100 fell to a 1-week low due to a sell-off in Oracle, which is viewed as a bellwether of the AI investment boom. Oracle tumbled more than 10% on Thursday, leading AI-infrastructure shares lower, after reporting Q2 cloud sales that missed estimates and raising its 2026 capital spending outlook by $15 billion to $50 billion. Oracle’s results reignited worries about tech valuations and whether the capital outlays on AI infrastructure will pay off.
US weekly initial unemployment claims rose by +44,000 to a 3-month high of 236,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of 220,000.
The US Sep trade deficit unexpectedly shrank to -$52.8 billion versus expectations of a widening to -$63.1 billion and the smallest deficit in 5.25 years.
The markets are discounting a 24% chance that the FOMC will cut the fed funds target range by 25 bp at the January 27-28 FOMC meeting.
Q3 corporate earnings season is drawing to a close as 496 of the 500 S&P companies have released results. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 83% of reporting S&P 500 companies exceeded forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. Q3 earnings rose +14.6%, more than doubling expectations of +7.2% y/y.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Thursday. The Euro Stoxx 50 rallied to a 4-week high and closed up +0.80%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed down -0.70%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -0.90%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Thursday closed up by +7.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -0.6 bp to 4.141%. T-notes found support on Thursday on positive carryover from Wednesday when the FOMC cut its 2025 and 2026 US core PCE price estimates, and Fed Chair Powell said that he doesn't think a rate hike is anybody's base case for the Fed's next policy move. T-notes held their gains after weekly jobless claims unexpectedly rose to a 3-month high, a dovish factor for Fed policy. Decent demand for the Treasury’s $22 billion auction of 30-year T-bonds was also positive for T-notes as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.36, right on the 10-auction average.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield fell -0.7 bp to 2.843%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -2.2 bp to 4.484%.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on December 18.
US Stock Movers
Cruise line operators moved higher on Thursday. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL) closed up more than +7% to lead gainers in the S&P 500. Also, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) closed up more than +6%, and Carnival (CCL) closed up more than +5%
Managed healthcare stocks rallied on Thursday. Elevance Health (ELV) closed up more than +5%, and Centene (CNC) and Molina Healthcare (MOH) closed up more than +4%. Also, Humana (HUM) and Cigna Group (CI) closed up more than +3%. In addition, HCA Healthcare (HCA) and UnitedHealth Group (UNH) closed up more than +2%.
Fertilizer stocks rose on Thursday after Ukraine said its drones attacked two fertilizer plants in western Russia. Mosaic (MOS) closed up more than +6%, and Intrepid Potash (IPI) closed up more than +5%. Also, CF Industries Holdings (CF) closed up more than +2%.
Chip makers retreated on Thursday, weighing on the Nasdaq 100. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Intel (INTC), and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed down more than -3%. Also, Nvidia (NVDA), Broadcom (AVGO), Applied Materials (AMAT), GlobalFoundries (GFS), and Micron Technology (MU) closed down more than -1%.
Oracle (ORCL) closed down more than -10% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 adjusted revenue of $16.06 billion, below the consensus of $16.21 billion, and raising its 2026 capital spending outlook by $15 billion to $50 billion.
Oxford Industries (OXM) closed down more than -21% after cutting its 2026 adjusted EPS forecast to $2.20-$2.40 from a previous estimate of $2.80-$3.20, well below the consensus of $2.91.
Lovesac Co (LOVE) closed down more than -8% after cutting its 2026 net sales forecast to $685 million-$705 million from a previous forecast of $710 million-$740 million, weaker than the consensus of $713.7 million.
Stellantis NV (STLA) closed down more than -3% after BNP Paribas Exane downgraded the stock to underperform from neutral.
Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) closed down more than -1% after Citigroup downgraded the stock to neutral from buy.
Gemini Space Station Inc (GEMI) closed up more than +31% after the company’s application for a derivatives exchange was approved by the Commodity Futures Exchange Commission.
Ciena Corp (CIEN) closed up more than +8% after reporting Q4 revenue of $1.35 billion, better than the consensus of $1.29 billion.
Visa (V) closed up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after Bank of America Global Research upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $382.
Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) closed up more than +2% after Goldman Sachs initiated coverage on the stock with a buy recommendation and a price target of $120.
West Pharmaceutical Services (WST) closed up more than +1% after Nephron Research LLC upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $367.

Most Stocks Recover from Oracle Sell-Off

Key Points
UnitedHealth Group stock is trading at an attractive price-to-earnings ratio right now.
UnitedHealth's management has a solid plan to improve profit margins.
I love buying beaten-down stocks when they're bottoming out -- particularly when I know it's just a matter of time before they bounce back. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I grabbed shares of both Delta Air Lines and Royal Caribbean Cruises when they were trading for pennies on the dollar because I knew they would both rebound when travel restrictions lifted and vacations were possible once again. I held both stocks for two years and more than doubled my investment in both.
Looking at the market today, one name that I can put in a similar category is healthcare giant UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH). The primary difference I see compared to Delta and Royal Caribbean is that those travel stocks were victims of circumstance, while UnitedHealth Group's stock suffered this year because the company made some bad decisions.

But either way, I feel really confident that UNH stock will rebound in 2026. Considering the stock also has a strong dividend yield of 2.5%, I'll strongly consider picking up shares when I rebalance my portfolio at the end of the year.
About UnitedHealth Group stock
UnitedHealth Group is a Minnesota-based managed care company that generates revenue by offering Medicare and Medicaid supplemental plans, including Medicare Advantage, as well as health insurance plans for individuals and businesses. The company is the largest managed care company in the U.S., boasting roughly 23% of the market share. CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) at 19.9% and Cigna Group (NYSE: CI) at 13.5% are the only other two companies with a market share of more than 10%.
Share prices are trading down about 35% so far this year, with much of the drop happening after UnitedHealth Group's shockingly bad first-quarter earnings report, in which it missed analysts' expectations for the first time since 2008. The stock's performance this year is far worse than either CVS, which also has a robust retail business, or Cigna.
But in today's what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world, I'm more focused on the short-term performance. Over the last three months, UNH stock has actually outperformed its competitors, suggesting that the company has hit bottom -- and the recovery has yet to begin in earnest.
Why I'm confident in a UnitedHealth Group rebound
The biggest problems facing UNH are solvable; they just require time. Management acknowledged that it had badly misjudged how much it would be charged for services by hospitals and doctors when setting 2025 customer premiums. When it realized its mistake, it adjusted its 2025 full-year guidance to note an increase in medical costs by $6.5 billion. It also raised 2026 premiums.
However, that doesn't really help things this year. As much as UNH can try to cut costs, it's unable to achieve the profit margin this year that it had expected due to that mistake. Management announced that it plans to rectify the problem in 2026 and 2027 by adjusting its Medicare Advantage bids and working with Medicare so it can expect a target margin range between 2% and 4%. It's also planning to drop some Medicare Advantage plans and will consider exiting some commercial markets if it can't negotiate the rates that it wants.
Earnings in the third quarter showed revenue of $113.2 billion, up 12% from last year. But earnings of $4.3 billion were down sharply from the $8.7 billion that UnitedHealth Group achieved in Q3 2024, and the margin dropped to 2.1% from 6%.
In short, UnitedHealth Group is generating more revenue, but its inflated costs are eroding its profits. That's what UNH needs to fix in 2026.
"We remain focused on strengthening performance and positioning for durable and accelerating growth in 2026 and beyond, and our results this quarter reflect solid execution toward that goal," CEO Stephen Hemsley said in a release.
UnitedHealth Group is a stock that pays you back
That brings us to one of the best reasons to have UnitedHealth Group stock -- the dividend yield of 2.25%, or $2.21 per share. That's significantly better than the average yield in the healthcare sector, which is only 1.6%.
Healthcare companies are some of the best places to find reliable dividends because they are established, stable companies, rather than being in hypergrowth mode like many tech stocks. Even with UnitedHealth Group's falling margins, the stock's payout ratio is only 50%, so I'm comfortable knowing that it won't go away. In fact, UnitedHealth Group has increased its dividend annually for the last 16 years.
As the stock price increases in 2026 -- as I fully expect it will after UnitedHealth Group addresses its profit margin problem -- you can expect the dividend yield to decrease. But the quarterly payout remains the same, with another likely increase to come, meaning that you'll have extra money to reinvest in your portfolio or to use elsewhere.
UnitedHealth Group is far from the perfect stock, but it is an appealing buy because it can learn from its errors and negotiate better prices in 2026 and 2027. The current price-to-earnings ratio of 17.2 indicates that the stock is a huge bargain right now, trading below its five-year P/E mean of 25.2.
The market will show UNH stock some love when those margins improve, but buying now means getting in at a lower price and enjoying the ride higher. And that's always a fun trip for any investor.

Meet the 2.5% Yield Dividend Stock That Could Soar in 2026

CVS Health’s CVS Health Care Benefits segment recorded a medical benefit ratio (MBR) of 92.8% in the third quarter of 2025 compared with 95.2% in the prior year. The metric shows the percentage of premium revenues spent on medical benefits for the Insured members. Management uses MBR to assess the underlying business performance and underwriting of its insurance products, compare actual results with expected results and identify the trends across reporting periods.
The improvement in the quarter was driven by the year-over-year impact of premium deficiency reserves (PDR) recorded as healthcare costs. During the third quarter of 2024, CVS recorded approximately $1.1 billion in PDR, which did not repeat this time, while $174 million of PDR recorded during the first half of 2025 was utilized. Additionally, higher favorable prior-period development and better underlying performance in the Government business drove the improvement.
However, the decrease in MBR was partially offset by changes in the seasonality of the Medicare Part D program due to the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act, as well as higher acuity in the individual exchange product line. MBR was impacted by approximately 100 basis points from provider liabilities for matters dating back to 2018 and worsening individual exchange risk adjustment expectations, with both contributing roughly the same.
CVS Health continues to expect full-year 2025 MBR at approximately 91% at the low end of the Health Care Benefits adjusted operating income guidance range. This outlook takes into account a “thoughtful and prudent view” on medical cost trends through the rest of the year.

VHT, CVS, BMY, CI: ETF Inflow Alert

Shares of Select Medical Holdings Corporation SEM have declined 5.4% since it reported third-quarter 2025 results on Oct. 30. The quarterly results were affected by an elevated expense level. Additionally, a decline in patient days exerted pressure on profitability in the Critical Illness Recovery Hospital segment and lower revenue per visit did the same for the Outpatient Rehabilitation unit. Nevertheless, the downside was partly offset by solid revenue growth in the Rehabilitation Hospital segment, driven by higher admissions and improved occupancy. A hiked 2025 EPS guidance also remains an added positive.
Select Medical reported third-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of 23 cents, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 27.8%. However, the bottom line declined 11.5% year over year.
Net operating revenues advanced 7.2% year over year to $1.4 billion. The top line beat the consensus mark by 2.9%.

Select Medical’s Q3 Performance
Total costs and expenses were $1.3 billion, which increased 6% year over year and came higher than our estimate of $1.26 billion. The year-over-year rise was due to higher costs of services, exclusive of depreciation and amortization.
Adjusted EBITDA improved 7.5% year over year to $111.7 million, which beat our estimate of $104.4 million.
Select Medical’s Segmental Update
Critical Illness Recovery Hospital
The segment recorded revenues of $609.9 million in the third quarter, which grew 4.6% year over year, and surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $602 million and our estimate of $602.4 million. The unit benefited on the back of a 2.1% year-over-year increase in admissions and a 6.6% rise in revenue per patient day. Patient days slipped 1.9% year over year. The occupancy rate remained flat year over year at 65%.
Adjusted EBITDA advanced 10.5% year over year to $56.1 million but fell short of the consensus mark and our estimate of $66 million. The adjusted EBITDA margin of 9.2% improved 50 basis points (bps) year over year.
Rehabilitation Hospital
The unit’s revenues rose 16.2% year over year to $328.6 million, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $303 million and our estimate of $303.4 million. The favorable performance stemmed from year-over-year increases of 11.2% and 11.1%, respectively, in admissions and patient days. The occupancy rate was 83%, which improved 100 bps year over year in the quarter under review.
Adjusted EBITDA improved 13% year over year to $68 million, which beat the consensus mark of $59 million and our estimate of $58.8 million. However, the adjusted EBITDA margin of 20.7% deteriorated 60 bps year over year.
Outpatient Rehabilitation
Revenues totaled $325.4 million in the segment, which rose 4.3% year over year, and came higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $313 million and our estimate of $312.8 million. The unit’s performance was aided by a 5.5% year-over-year increase in visits. Revenue per visit dipped 1% year over year.
Adjusted EBITDA tumbled 14.6% year over year to $24.2 million and lagged the consensus mark and our estimate of $46.6 million. The adjusted EBITDA margin of 7.4% deteriorated 170 bps year over year.
Select Medical’s Financial Position (As of Sept. 30, 2025)
Select Medical exited the third quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $60.1 million, which inched up 0.6% from the 2024-end level.
Total assets of $5.7 billion increased 1.4% from the 2024-end figure.
Long-term debt, net of the current portion, amounted to $1.7 billion, up 3.1% from the figure as of Dec. 31, 2024.
Total equity of $2 billion inched up 1.2% from the 2024-end level.
Select Medical generated net cash from operations of $175.3 million in the reported quarter, which fell 3.1% year over year.

Select Medical bought back shares worth around $96.5 million in the first nine months of 2025.
On Oct. 29, 2025, management approved a cash dividend of 6.25 cents per share, which will be paid out on Nov. 25 to its shareholders of record as of Nov. 12.

Management still estimates revenues within $5.3-$5.5 billion, the mid-point of which represents a 4.1% increase from the 2024 figure.

Of the Medical sector players that have reported third-quarter 2025 results so far, the bottom-line results of The Cigna Group CI, Tenet Healthcare Corporation THC and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated UNH beat the respective Zacks Consensus Estimate.
Cigna reported third-quarter 2025 adjusted EPS of $7.83, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.7%. The bottom line advanced 4% year over year. Adjusted revenues of $69.6 billion rose 9% year over year. The top line beat the consensus mark by 3.6%. Cigna’s medical customer base came in at 18.1 million as of Sept. 30, 2025, which declined 5.2% year over year. Adjusted income from operations totaled $2.1 billion, which declined 1% year over year.
The Evernorth Health Services unit recorded revenues of $60.4 billion in the third quarter, which advanced 15% year over year. Adjusted operating income, on a pre-tax basis, rose 1% year over year to $1.9 billion and beat the consensus mark by 1.1%. However, the adjusted pre-tax margin of 3.2% deteriorated 40 bps year over year. The Cigna Healthcare segment’s revenues of $10.9 billion tumbled 18% year over year in the quarter under review. Pre-tax adjusted operating income dropped 12% year over year to $1 billion.
Tenet Healthcare’s third-quarter 2025 adjusted EPS of $3.70 surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 11.1%. The bottom line increased 26.3% year over year. Net operating revenues advanced 3.2% year over year to $5.3 billion. The top line beat the consensus mark by 1%. Adjusted net income of $328 million climbed 16.3% year over year in the quarter under review. Adjusted EBITDA improved 12.4% year over year to $1.1 billion.
The Hospital Operations and Services segment recorded net operating revenues of $4 billion, which inched up 0.7% year over year. Adjusted EBITDA climbed 12.6% year over year to $607 million in the third quarter. Adjusted EBITDA margin of 15.1% improved 160 bps year over year. The Ambulatory Care segment’s net operating revenues rose 11.9% year over year to $1.3 billion. Adjusted EBITDA was $492 million, which advanced 12.1% year over year. Adjusted EBITDA margin improved 10 bps year over year at 38.6%.
UnitedHealth Group reported third-quarter 2025 adjusted EPS of $2.92, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.75. However, the bottom line declined 59.2% year over year. Revenues rose 12% year over year to $113.2 billion. The top line missed the consensus mark by 0.2%. UnitedHealth’s third-quarter premium of $89 billion increased from $77.4 billion a year ago. UNH’s medical care ratio (MCR) was 89.9% in the third quarter, which deteriorated 470 bps from the year-ago period.
UnitedHealth’s operating earnings declined 50% year over year to $4.3 billion in the third quarter. The net margin deteriorated 390 bps to 2.1% from the year-ago period. Revenues of the health benefits business of UnitedHealth, UnitedHealthcare, advanced 16% year over year to $87.1 billion in the third quarter. Revenues in the Optum business line were $69.2 billion, which rose 8% year over year. The UnitedHealthcare business catered to 50.1 million people as of Sept. 30, 2025, which grew 1.6% year over year.

Looking at the underlying holdings of the ETFs in our coverage universe at ETF Channel, we have compared the trading price of each holding against the average analyst 12-month forward target price, and computed the weighted average implied analyst target price for the ETF itself. For the BlackRock U.S. Carbon Transition Readiness ETF (Symbol: LCTU), we found that the implied analyst target price for the ETF based upon its underlying holdings is $84.07 per unit.

The Nasdaq 100 was under pressure on Tuesday due to weakness in AI-infrastructure stocks and semiconductor makers. CoreWeave fell more than -16% to lead AI stocks lower after it said a data center delay would negatively impact Q4 earnings expectations. Also, Nvidia closed down by more than -2% after SoftBank Group sold its entire stake in the company for $5.83 billion.
Also weighing on stocks on Tuesday was a weekly report from ADP that showed US private employers shed an average of 11,250 jobs per week over the four weeks ending October 25, 2025, suggesting the labor market has weakened. In addition, the US Oct NFIB small business optimism index fell -0.6 to a 6-month low of 98.2, weaker than expectations of 98.3.
On Sunday, a group of eight Senate Democrats broke with their party to vote with Republicans to advance a bill to reopen the government. The bill would provide full-year funding for some departments, fund other agencies through January 30, and provide pay for furloughed government workers. The bill will also resume withheld federal payments to states and localities and recall agency employees who were laid off during the shutdown.
The markets are discounting a 67% chance of another -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on December 9-10.
Q3 corporate earnings season is nearly over, as 456 of the S&P 500 companies have reported earnings results. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 82% of reporting S&P 500 companies exceeded forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. Q3 earnings rose +14.6%, more than doubling expectations of +7.2% y/y.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 rose to a 1.5-week high and closed up +1.08%. China’s Shanghai Composite fell from a 1.5-week high and closed down -0.39%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -0.14%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Tuesday closed up by +11 ticks. The cash Treasury market was closed on Tuesday for the Veterans Day holiday. T-notes moved higher Tuesday after a report from ADP showed that private-sector US employers shed more jobs than they created in the four weeks ending October 25, a dovish factor for Fed policy.
Gains in T-notes were limited amid progress on ending the US government shutdown. The Senate passed a temporary CR on Monday, and the House will vote on the measure on Wednesday, which is expected to pass and go to President Trump, who said he will sign the bill into law.
European government bond yields moved lower on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield fell -1.0 bp to 2.658%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell to a 2-week low of 4.374% and finished down -7.4 bp to 4.387%.
The German Nov ZEW survey expectations of economic growth unexpectedly fell -0.8 to 38.5, versus expectations of an increase to 41.0.
ECB Executive Board member Elderson said the current level of ECB interest rates “is appropriate, but we will continue to be data-dependent and decide on rates one meeting at a time.”
ECB Governing Council member Kocher said, “The ECB is in a good position on interest-rate policy, and the expectation is that not much more will happen in the next few months.”
UK Sep employment change unexpectedly fell -22,000, weaker than expectations of a +5,000 increase and the biggest decline in 1.5 years. The Sep ILO unemployment rate rose +0.2 to a 4.5-year high of 5.0%, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of 4.9%.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on December 18.
US Stock Movers
Recently beaten-down pharmaceutical makers and health insurance stocks rallied on Tuesday, helping support gains in the broader market. Viatris (VRTS) closed up more than +10% to lead gainers in the S&P 500. Also, Moderna (MRNA) closed up more than +6% and Merck & Co (MRK) closed up more than +4% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. In addition, Amgen (AMGN) and Pfizer (PFE) closed up more than +4%, and Elevance Health (ELV), Gilead Sciences (GILD), Cigna Group (CI), Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY), Centene (CNC), and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN) closed up more than +3%.
Surmodics Inc. (SRDX) closed up more than +49% after a federal court rejected a request by the FTC and some state regulators for a preliminary injunction blocking the company’s acquisition by GTCR.
RealReal (REAL) closed up more than +37% after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $687 million-$690 million from a previous forecast of $667 million-$674 million, stronger than the consensus of $675 million.
Paramount Skydance (PSKY) closed up more than +9% after announcing an additional 1,600-person workforce reduction and a goal to achieve at least $3 billion in cost savings.
Kodiak Sciences (KOD) closed up more than +6% after HC Wainwright & Co LLC upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $24.
FedEx (FDX) closed up more than +5% after CFO Dietrich told investors at an industry conference that the company’s adjusted earnings in its fiscal second quarter will surpass the $4.05 a share generated last year.
Viasat Inc. (VSAT) closed up more than +3% after JPMorgan Chase upgraded the stock to overweight from neutral with a price target of $50.
Linde Plc (LIN) closed up more than +1% after UBS upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $500.
Chip stocks slid on Tuesday, weighing on the Nasdaq 100. Micron Technology (MU), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -4%. Also, ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -3%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Applied Materials (AMAT), and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -2%. In addition, Broadcom (AVGO), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Intel (INTC), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed down more than -1%.

Gemini Space Station Inc (GEMI) closed down more than -16% after reporting a Q3 loss of -$6.67 per share, a larger loss than the consensus of -$3.24.

Six Flags Entertainment Corp (FUN) closed down more than -5% after CFRA downgraded the stock to hold from buy and cut its price target to $9 from $18.

Stocks Settle Mostly Higher on Government Reopening Optimism

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Monday closed up +1.54%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.81%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +2.20%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) rose +1.56%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) rose +2.22%.
US stock indexes settled sharply higher on Monday in hopes that the US government will soon reopen. On Sunday, a group of eight Senate Democrats broke with their party to vote with Republicans to advance a bill to reopen the government. The move boosted market sentiment and sparked a risk-on mood in asset markets. The Senate must still schedule a final vote, and the measure must pass the House before reaching President Trump for his signature. The bill would provide full-year funding for some departments, fund other agencies through January 30, and provide pay for furloughed government workers. The bill will also resume withheld federal payments to states and localities and recall agency employees who were laid off during the shutdown.

Stocks added to their gains Monday afternoon after the White House expressed support for the bipartisan deal to end the US government shutdown. House Speaker Johnson said he would give House lawmakers 36 hours’ notice to return to the Capitol once the Senate passes the bill. The ending of the shutdown would remove a growth headwind and uncertainty clouding the economic outlook.
Positive comments from San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly on Monday were supportive for stocks and bonds when she said, “So far, the effects of the tariffs have largely been confined to goods, with little spillover into services inflation or inflation expectations, which remain relatively well-anchored around our 2% target.” She added that “we also see a labor market that’s softening and wage growth that is moderating, so you’re really not going to see a lot of pressure on the cost side of labor, meaning we don’t want to make the mistake of holding on too long to high interest rates only to find out we’ve injured the economy.”
Comments from St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem on Monday were hawkish when he said he expects “a substantial rebound in the US economy in the first quarter, and there’s limited room for further interest rate reductions without monetary policy becoming overly accommodative.”
The US government shutdown, now in its seventh week —the longest in history —is weighing on market sentiment and the US economy. The government shutdown is delaying a host of government reports and is having an adverse effect on the US economy.
The markets are discounting a 63% chance of another -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on December 9-10.
The US Supreme Court last Wednesday appeared skeptical about whether President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs are legal. Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Gorsuch and Coney questioned President Trump’s use of an emergency-powers law to collect tariffs, with Roberts saying the tariffs were an “imposition of taxes on Americans, and that has always been the core power of Congress.” The Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling by late this year or early in 2026. Lower courts have already ruled that Mr. Trump’s reciprocal tariffs are illegal, finding they are based on a specious claim of emergency authority under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act. If the US Supreme Court upholds those rulings and strikes down the tariffs, then the US government may have to refund the reciprocal and fentanyl-linked tariffs already collected, totaling more than $80 billion, and Mr. Trump’s power to impose tariffs may be limited to well-founded sections of US trade law, such as sections 232, 301, and 201.

Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Monday closed down -5.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose by +1.5 bp to 4.112%. T-notes were under pressure on Monday amid a stock rally, which curbed safe-haven demand for government debt. Also, hopes that the US government shutdown might be nearing an end have reduced safe-haven demand for T-notes. In addition, hawkish comments from St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem weighed on T-notes when he said there’s limited room for further Fed interest rate cuts.
Losses in T-notes were limited after San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said the US economy is probably suffering a downturn in demand, while tariff-related inflation appears to be contained for now, and warned against keeping interest rates too high for too long. T-notes also garnered support from strong demand seen for the Treasury’s $58 billion auction of 3-year T-notes that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.85, well above the 10-auction average of 2.61 and the highest in more than two years.
T-note prices have underlying support from the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now the longest in history and could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
European government bond yields were mixed on Monday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 1-month high of 2.697% and finished up +0.2 bp to 2.668%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell from a 2.5-week high of 4.509% and finished down -0.4 bp to 4.461%.
The Eurozone Nov Sentix investor confidence index unexpectedly fell -2.0 to -7.4, weaker than expectations of an increase to -4.0.
Swaps are discounting a 4% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on December 18.
US Stock Movers
AI infrastructure and semiconductor stocks rallied on Monday and gave the broader market a lift. Palantir Technologies (PLTR) closed up more than +9% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Micron Technology (MU) and Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +6%. Also, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Lam Research (LRCX) closed up more than +4%, and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Broadcom (AVGO), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Applied Materials (AMAT), and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed up more than +2%. In addition, Analog Devices (ADI) and GlobalFoundries (GFS) closed up more than +1%.
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks moved higher on Monday, a supportive factor for the overall market. Nvidia (NVDA) closed up more than +5% and Tesla (TSLA) and Alphabet (GOOGL) closed up more than +3%. Also, Amazon.com (AMZN), Meta Platforms (META), and Microsoft (MSFT) closed up more than +1%. In addition, Apple (AAPL) closed up +0.36%.
Gold-producing stocks jumped on Monday after the price of COMEX gold rallied more than +2% to a 2-week high. Anglogold Ashanti Plc (AU), Barrick Mining (B), Gold Fields Ltd (GFI), and Newmont (NEM) closed up more than +5%.
TreeHouse Foods (THS) closed up more than +22% after Investindustrial agreed to buy the company for about $2.9 billion, or about $22.50 a share.
Albemarle (ALB) closed up more than +6% after Scotiabank raised its price target on the stock to $85 from $70.
Celestica (CLS) closed up more than +6% after Citigroup upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $375.
Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) closed up more than +4% after Leerink Partners upgraded the stock to outperform from market perform with a price target of $1,104.
Tyson Foods (TSN) closed up more than +2% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of $1.15, stronger than the consensus of 84 cents.
Health insurance stocks retreated on Monday as US lawmakers moved closer to ending the government shutdown without addressing the health care system. As a result, Oscar Health (OSCR) closed down more than -17% and Centene (CNC) closed down more than -8% to lead losers in the S&P 500. Also, Molina Healthcare (MOH) closed down more than -7% and Humana (HUM) closed down more than -5%. In addition, Elevance Health (ELV) closed down more than -4%, and HCA Healthcare (HCA) and Universal Health Services (UHS) closed down more than -3%. Finally, Cigna Group (CI) closed down more than -2%.
Metsera (MTSR) closed down by more than -15% after Novo Nordisk A/S declined to further raise its offer to buy the company, bringing a bidding war with Pfizer to an end.
Monday.com (MNDY) closed down more than -12% after forecasting Q4 revenue of $328 million to $330 million, weaker than the consensus of $333.7 million.
Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) closed down more than -11% after B. Riley Securities downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $15.
Ball Corp (BALL) closed down more than -5% after CEO Fisher said he was stepping down, effective immediately.

She added that "we also see a labor market that's softening and wage growth that is moderating, so you're really not going to see a lot of pressure on the cost side of labor, meaning we don't want to make the mistake of holding on too long to high interest rates only to find out we've injured the economy."
Comments today from St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem were hawkish when he said he expects "a substantial rebound in the US economy in the first quarter, and there's limited room for further interest rate reductions without monetary policy becoming overly accommodative."
The US government shutdown, now in its seventh week —the longest in history —is weighing on market sentiment and the US economy. The government shutdown is delaying a host of government reports and is having an adverse effect on the US economy.
The markets are discounting a 63% chance of another -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on December 9-10.
The US Supreme Court last Wednesday appeared skeptical about whether President Trump's reciprocal tariffs are legal. Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Gorsuch and Coney questioned President Trump's use of an emergency-powers law to collect tariffs, with Roberts saying the tariffs were an "imposition of taxes on Americans, and that has always been the core power of Congress." The Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling by late this year or early in 2026. Lower courts have already ruled that Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs are illegal, finding they are based on a specious claim of emergency authority under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act. If the US Supreme Court upholds those rulings and strikes down the tariffs, then the US government may have to refund the reciprocal and fentanyl-linked tariffs already collected, totaling more than $80 billion, and Mr. Trump's power to impose tariffs may be limited to well-founded sections of US trade law, such as sections 232, 301, and 201.
Q3 corporate earnings season is nearing its end as 455 of the S&P 500 companies have reported earnings results. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 82% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. Q3 profits have risen +14.6% thus far, more than doubling expectations of +7.2% y/y.
Overseas stock markets are higher today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +1.99%. China's Shanghai Composite rose to a 1-week high and closed up +0.53%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +1.26%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) today are down -5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +0.8 bp to 4.104%. T-notes are under pressure today amid a stock rally, which has curbed safe-haven demand for government debt. Also, hopes that the US government shutdown might be nearing an end have reduced safe-haven demand for T-notes. In addition, supply pressures are weighing on T-notes as the Treasury will auction $125 billion of T-notes and T-bonds in the week's November quarterly refunding, beginning with today's $58 billion auction of 3-year T-notes.
Losses in T-notes are limited due to dovish comments from San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly, who said the US economy is probably suffering a downturn in demand while tariff-related inflation appears to be contained for now, and warned against keeping interest rates too high for too long.
T-note prices have underlying support from the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now the longest in history and could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
European government bond yields fell from early highs today and turned lower. The 10-year German bund yield dropped from a 1-month high of 2.697% and is down -0.2 bp to 2.664%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell from a 2.5-week high of 4.509% and is down -1.5 bp to 4.451%.
The Eurozone Nov Sentix investor confidence index unexpectedly fell -2.0 to -7.4, weaker than expectations of an increase to -4.0.
Swaps are discounting a 4% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on December 18.
US Stock Movers
AI infrastructure and semiconductor stocks are rallying today, boosting the broader market. Palantir Technologies (PLTR) is up more than +7% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Micron Technology (MU) is up more than +6%. Also, Western Digital (WDC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are up more than +5%, and Lam Research (LRCX) is up more than +3%. In addition, ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Broadcom (AVGO), and Marvell Technology (MRVL) are up more than +2%. Finally, Applied Materials (AMAT), KLA Corp (KLAC), and GlobalFoundries (GFS) are up more than +1%.
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks are climbing today, a supportive factor for the overall market. Nvidia (NVDA) and Tesla (TSLA) are up more than +3%, and Alphabet (GOOGL) is up more than +2%. Also, Meta Platforms (META) and Microsoft (MSFT) are up more than +1%. In addition, Apple (AAPL) is up +0.82% and Amazon.com (AMZN) is up +0.76%.
Gold-producing stocks are climbing today with the price of COMEX gold up more th +2% at a 2-week high. Anglogold Ashanti Plc (AU), Barrick Mining (B), Gold Fields Ltd (GFI), and Newmont (NEM) are up more than +3%.
TreeHouse Foods (THS) is up more than +23% after Investindustrial agreed to buy the company for about $2.9 billion, or about $22.50 a share.
Albemarle (ALB) is up more than +5% after Scotiabank raised its price target on the stock to $85 from $70.
Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) is up more than +4% after Leerink Partners upgraded the stock to outperform from market perform with a price target of $1,104.
Celestica (CLS) is up more than +4% after Citigroup upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $375.
Tyson Foods (TSN) is up more than +2% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of $1.15, stronger than the consensus of 84 cents.
Health insurance stocks are under pressure as US lawmakers move closer to ending the government shutdown without addressing the health care system. As a result, Oscar Health (OSCR) is down more than -15% and Centene (CNC) is down more than -8% to lead losers in the S&P 500. Also, Molina Healthcare (MOH) is down more than -6%, and HCA Healthcare (HCA) and Elevance Health (ELV) are down more than -4%. In addition, Humana (HUM) and Universal Health Services (UHS) are down more than -3%, and Cigna Group (CI) is down more than -1%.
Metsera (MTSR) is down by more than -15% after Novo Nordisk A/S declined to further raise its offer to buy the company, bringing a bidding war with Pfizer to an end.
Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) is down more than -14% after B Riley Securities downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $15.
Monday.com (MNDY) is down more than -13% after forecasting Q4 revenue of $328 million to $330 million, weaker than the consensus of $333.7 million.
Ball Corp (BALL) is down more than -4% after CEO Fisher said he was stepping down, effective immediately.
