Its Overseas General Insurance segment provides coverage for traditional commercial property and casualty; specialty categories, such as financial lines, marine, energy, aviation, political risk, and construction; and group accident and health, and traditional and specialty personal lines for corporations, middle markets, and small customers through retail brokers, agents, and other channels. The company's Global Reinsurance segment offers traditional and specialty reinsurance under the Chubb Tempest Re brand to property and casualty companies. Its Life Insurance segment provides protection and savings products comprising whole life, endowment plans, individual and life, group term life, health protection, personal accident, credit life, universal life, group employee benefits, and unit linked contracts. It markets its products primarily through insurance and reinsurance brokers. The company was formerly known as ACE Limited and changed its name to Chubb Limited in January 2016. Unum Group’s UNM first-quarter 2026 operating net income of $2.14 per share missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3.4%. The bottom line decreased 9.7% year over year.
The quarterly results were adversely impacted by higher benefit costs and weaker international profitability. However, premium growth and strong sales momentum partly offset the decline.

Operational Update
Total operating revenues of Unum Group were $3.4 billion, up 8.5% year over year. The top line surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 14.4%.
Premium increased 3.4% from the prior-year quarter to $2.8 billion, which is higher than our estimate of $2.5 billion. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $2.7 billion.
Total benefits and expenses increased 7.2% year over year to $3.1 billion, largely attributable to higher policy benefits, commissions and other expenses. The figure was higher than our estimate of $2.5 billion.
Quarterly Segment Update
Unum U.S.: Premium income was $1.8 billion, up 3.3% year over year.
Adjusted operating income increased 2.7% year over year to $338 million. It excludes the amortization of the deferred gain on reinsurance of $4.4 million and the impact of non-contemporaneous reinsurance of $0.6 million. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $328 million, while our estimate was $341 million.
The group disability line of business reported a 10.6% decrease in adjusted operating income while the group life and accidental death and dismemberment line of business reported a 66.3% increase. The supplemental and voluntary line of business reported a decrease of 17.4%.
Unum International: Premium income of $286.7 million increased 16.2% year over year.
Adjusted operating income was $30.9 million, down 20.2% year over year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $41 million, while our estimate was $47.5 million.
The Unum U.K. line of business premium income totaled £172.1 million, up 6.6% from the year-ago quarter, primarily due to in-force block growth, sales, and favorable persistency. Adjusted operating income, in local currency, was £20.4million was down 30.8% year over year.
The benefit ratio, excluding the reserve assumption updates, was 72.9%, which deteriorated 580 basis points (bps), primarily due to higher average claim size and increased claim incidence in the group long-term disability business.
Sales increased 15% to £24.5 million.
Persistency increased in the supplemental product line, but decreased in the group long-term disability and the group life product line.
Colonial Life: Premium income increased 3.4% from the prior-year figure to $472.2 million, driven by stable overall persistency and prior period sales.
Sales increased 0.9% from the year-ago figure to $106.3 million.
Adjusted operating income increased 10.5% from the prior-year period to $127.8 million. Our estimate was $115.9 million, while the Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $120.8 million.
Persistency was 78.1% for the first three months of 2026, remained same year over year. The benefit ratio, excluding the reserve assumption updates, improved 170 bps year over year to 46.7%.
Closed Block: Premium income decreased 11.1% to $194.4 million. Adjusted operating loss was $145.3 million compared to income of $8 million a year ago, primarily due to group policy terminations, higher claim incidence in long-term care, and lower net investment income. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $13.8 million.
Corporate: The segment incurred an adjusted operating loss of $43.6 million, wider than the year-ago quarter’s loss of $41.1 million, primarily due to decreased net investment income. Our estimate for loss was $49 million, while the Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at a loss of $45.2 million.
Capital Management
As of March. 31, 2026, the weighted average risk-based capital ratio for Unum Group’s traditional U.S. insurance companies was approximately 460%.
Unum Group exited the first quarter with holding company liquidity worth $1.7 billion.
Book value per share grew 6.2% year over year to $67.76 as of March 31, 2026.

What stock did Warren Buffett sell?
From early 2024 through his retirement, Buffett sold about three-quarters of Berkshire's Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) stake. However, Berkshire Hathaway still holds a $61.6 billion stake in Apple, making it the company's largest single investment.
Buffett likely sold Apple for three reasons: to rebalance Berkshire's portfolio (Apple had accounted for nearly half its entire portfolio at its peak), to avoid higher corporate taxes, and to raise more cash to buy safer -- and higher-yielding -- short-term U.S. Treasuries.
What stock did Warren Buffett buy instead?
After reducing Berkshire's exposure to Apple, Buffett ramped up its purchases of Chubb (NYSE: CB), the world's largest publicly traded provider of property, casualty, and supplemental insurance. Warren Buffett Quietly Sold 75% of His Biggest Holding. This Is Where the Money Went.

AMERISAFE, Inc. AMSF reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings per share of 50 cents, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 52 cents. The bottom line declined 16.7% year over year.
Operating revenues increased 7.9% year over year to $81.75 million but missed the consensus estimate by 0.9%.
The quarterly result was affected by higher expenses and weaker underwriting margins, with additional pressure from lower fee income and weaker investment income. Stronger premium growth partially offset the downside.

Net premiums earned of $75.1 million advanced 9% year over year. The metric missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.8%. The reported figure missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.5%. Fee and other income fell 63.3% year over year.
Total expenses escalated 13.9% year over year to $69.9 million due to higher loss and loss adjustment expenses incurred, underwriting and other operating costs and policyholder dividends.
AMERISAFE’s pre-tax underwriting profit amounted to $5.1 million, which fell 31.5% year over year. Operating net income of $9.5 million declined 17.4% year over year in the reported quarter.
The net combined ratio deteriorated 410 basis points year over year to 93.2. The Zacks Consensus Estimates was pegged at 92.7.
Financial Update (as of March 31, 2026)
AMERISAFE exited the first quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $34.2 million, down from $61.9 million at the end of 2025. Total assets declined to $1.12 billion from $1.13 billion at the end of 2025.
Shareholders’ equity decreased to $246.6 million from $251.6 million a year ago.
Book value per share was $13.18, down 3.7% year over year. Return on average equity declined 70 basis points year over year to 13.1%.
Capital Deployment Update
AMERISAFE bought back common shares worth $4 million during the first quarter. As of March 31, 2026, it had $12.9 million left under its share buyback program.
Management approved a quarterly cash dividend of 41 cents per share, which will be paid on June 19, 2026, to shareholders of record as of June 12, 2026.

The Progressive Corporation PGR reported first-quarter 2026 earnings per share of $4.96, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.5%. The bottom line increased 6.7% year over year. PGR’s net premiums written were $23.6 billion in the reported quarter, up 6.5% from $22.2 billion a year ago. Net premiums earned grew 8% to $20.9 billion, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.5%.
Progressive’s operating revenues grew 8.2% year over year to $22.3 billion, driven by higher net premiums earned, an increase in net investment income, a rise in fees and other revenues and higher service revenues. The top line missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.2%
The Travelers Companies, Inc. TRV reported first-quarter 2026 core income of $7.71 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 10.5%. The bottom line surged fourfold year over year. The increase was primarily driven by lower catastrophe losses and higher net investment income. Travelers’ total revenues remain flat at $11.9 billion. The top-line figure, however, missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3.7%.
Net written premiums increased 2% year over year to a record $10.3 billion, driven by strong growth across Business Insurance and Bond & Specialty Insurance segments. TRV’s net investment income increased 8.4% year over year to $1 billion, primarily due to the long-term fixed income investment portfolio.

It's an entirely new era for Berkshire Hathaway, with longtime CEO Warren Buffett retiring on Dec. 31 and his understudy, Greg Abel, taking the reins.

Many of the billion-dollar wagers in Berkshire's portfolio are driven by sustainable competitive advantages.
This year marks a new era in Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) storied history. After leading Berkshire for well over half a century and seeing the company he built reach a $1 trillion market cap, billionaire Warren Buffett retired as CEO on Dec. 31.
The person responsible for filling some impossibly big shoes is the Oracle of Omaha's longtime understudy, Greg Abel. Abel has been with Berkshire for over a quarter-century, and he has a nose for value just like his predecessor.

Although Buffett remains chairman of the board, Berkshire Hathaway's day-to-day operations, including the management and oversight of its $320 billion investment portfolio, fall to Abel. As of the closing bell on April 16, Berkshire's new boss has the final say over 48 positions.
Greg Abel's portfolio is highly concentrated in 10 core holdings
Warren Buffett's and Greg Abel's investment philosophies are very similar. In addition to value being of the utmost importance, both favor robust capital-return programs, strong management teams, and companies with sustainable competitive advantages.
Perhaps most importantly, Berkshire's former and current bosses believe in apportioning an outsize percentage of the company's capital into their best ideas. Just 10 positions account for nearly 79% of Berkshire Hathaway's invested assets:
Bank of America: $27,680,505,428

Occidental Petroleum: $15,067,219,181

Several of these "best idea" stocks share similarities. For instance, all 10 pay dividends to their shareholders, with some also actively repurchasing their shares. Apple has the largest share repurchase program on Wall Street, with the iPhone maker spending roughly $841 billion since 2013 to retire over 44% of its outstanding shares.
Buffett and Abel also view seven out of these 10 core positions as indefinite holdings. With the exception of Bank of America, Chevron, and Chubb, the remaining seven companies are expected to be fixtures in Berkshire's portfolio for decades to come. This includes Coca-Cola, American Express, and Moody's, the three longest-tenured holdings that are currently generating annual yields on cost of 63%, 45%, and 41%, respectively.
Investors can see Abel's influence among these 10 core holdings, as well. Abel is a huge fan of Japan's five trading houses, commonly known as the "sogo shosha," and was instrumental in building up sizable stakes in Mitsubishi and Mitsui.
Berkshire Hathaway has 20 additional billion-dollar wagers
On top of overseeing 10 positions that range from nearly $11 billion to $60 billion, Abel is responsible for 20 additional billion-dollar wagers in Berkshire Hathaway's $320 billion investment portfolio:

You'll note that the other three members of the sogo shosha are in this grouping (Itochu, Marubeni, and Sumitomo), and that they collectively make up five of Berkshire's 16 largest holdings by market value.
But what really stands out about these billion-dollar wagers is the emphasis on sustainable competitive advantages. For instance, Sirius XM and VeriSign operate as legal monopolies. Sirius XM is the only licensed satellite radio operator, while VeriSign is the registrar of ".com" and ".net" domains. Growth may not be off the charts for either company, but they possess unmatched competitive edges.
Abel is also overseeing close to $4.7 billion in combined investments in payment facilitators Visa and Mastercard. Whereas many of their peers double dip and act as lenders, Visa and Mastercard are solely focused on collecting merchant fees for facilitating payments. This means neither Visa nor Mastercard has to worry about setting aside capital for credit delinquencies or loan losses during periods of economic turbulence.
And we can't forget about Domino's Pizza, which is a stock the Oracle of Omaha added to for six consecutive quarters leading up to his retirement. Domino's ability to build consumers' trust and its track record of meeting or exceeding five-year growth initiatives made it a go-to investment for Berkshire's now-retired billionaire boss.

Rounding things out are the 18 relatively smaller holdings that Greg Abel oversees, ranging from $5 million to approximately $692 million:

Many of these "smaller" positions fall into two categories: companies that have been reduced or are being removed from Berkshire's investment portfolio, or investments made by Ted Weschler or Todd Combs, the latter of whom left Berkshire to join JPMorgan Chase in December 2025.
For example, Berkshire's stake in e-commerce and cloud infrastructure services titan Amazon was slashed by 77% during the December-ended quarter. Historically, a 77% reduction in a mid-tier position in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio has been a strong signal that a company would soon be getting the heave-ho. Though Amazon is historically inexpensive relative to its future cash flow, it's not a value stock in the traditional sense of the term -- and that may be a problem for Greg Abel.
While it's possible that some of these smaller positions can eventually become billion-dollar wagers, these investments are better viewed as trading opportunities for Weschler and his team.
