Bargain hunters are wise to pay careful attention to insider buying, because although there are many various reasons for an insider to sell a stock, presumably the only reason they would use their hard-earned dollars to make a purchase, is that they expect to make money. Today we look at two noteworthy recent insider buys.
On Friday, Elevance Health's CEO, Gail Boudreaux, made a $2.44M purchase of ELV, buying 8,500 shares at a cost of $286.94 each. Investors are able to buy ELV even cheaper than Boudreaux did, with the stock trading as low as $274.40 at last check today -- that's 4.4% below Boudreaux's purchase price. Elevance Health is trading up about 0.9% on the day Monday.
And at BRCC, there was insider buying on Friday, by Kathryn P. Dickson who bought 16,000 shares at a cost of $1.25 each, for a trade totaling $20,000. BRCC is trading up about 7% on the day Monday. Dickson was up about 42.4% on the purchase at the high point of today's trading session, with BRCC trading as high as $1.78 at last check today.

Monday 7/21 Insider Buying Report: ELV, BRCC

(RTTNews) - BRC Inc. (BRCC), a mission-driven, Veteran-founded premium beverage company, has priced an underwritten public offering of 28,000,000 shares of its Class A Common Stock at $1.25 per share.
The offering is expected to generate approximately $35 million in gross proceeds, before deducting underwriting fees and other expenses, and excludes the underwriter's 30-day option to purchase up to an additional 4,200,000 shares. The offering is anticipated to close on or around July 18, 2025, subject to standard closing conditions.
Thursday, BRCC closed at $1.77, up 17.22%, and was trading after hours at $1.80, a further gain of 1.69%, on the NYSE.

New Strong Sell Stocks for May 23rd

Consumer stocks were flat to higher pre-bell Thursday with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) inactive and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) 0.5% higher recently.
BRC (BRCC) shares were up over 3% amid a sales and distribution agreement with Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) under which the latter will sell and distribute Black Rifle Energy beverages in its company-owned direct store territories across the US.
Shoe Carnival (SCVL) shares were up over 2% after the company reported higher fiscal Q2 adjusted earnings and net sales. The company also narrowed its guidance for fiscal 2024 adjusted EPS and net sales.
G-III Apparel Group (GIII) shares were over 1% higher after the company reported a fiscal Q2 non-GAAP net income of $0.52 per diluted share, up from $0.40 a year earlier. The company also raised its outlook for fiscal 2024 non-GAAP net income per share.

Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Flat to Higher Pre-Bell Thursday

International Flavors (IFF) came out with quarterly earnings of $1.16 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.01 per share. This compares to earnings of $0.86 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.
This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of 14.85%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this ingredients producer for food, cosmetics and consumer products industries would post earnings of $0.84 per share when it actually produced earnings of $1.13, delivering a surprise of 34.52%.
Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates three times.
International Flavors, which belongs to the Zacks Consumer Products - Staples industry, posted revenues of $2.89 billion for the quarter ended June 2024, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.34%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $2.93 billion. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates three times over the last four quarters.
The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.
International Flavors shares have added about 16.9% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's gain of 8.7%.

International Flavors (IFF) Beats Q2 Earnings and Revenue Estimates

If you invested $10,000 in shares of coffee giant Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) 30 years ago, you would have well over $900,000 today. It's been a great long-term investment, but 2024 has been a different story.
As of this writing, Starbucks stock is down 24% year to date, greatly underperforming the S&P 500's nearly 17% gain. What are coffee aficionados to do when looking for a caffeinated investment opportunity?
As it turns out, there are two other coffee stocks outperforming the broad market this year: Dutch Bros (NYSE: BROS) and Black Rifle Coffee (NYSE: BRCC). Here's what investors need to know.

1. Dutch Bros
Dutch Bros is a drive-thru coffee chain with 831 locations as of the end of the first quarter. And business is booming. In Q1, the company's same-store sales were up a whopping 10%, and this number is quite noteworthy.
Once a location has been open for 15 months, Dutch Bros considers it part of the comparable-store base for measuring same-store sales. It's opened over 150 new locations in the past year, and these newer shops are excluded from that figure. This metric is a good way of monitoring the health of the business with an established base of customers.
Dutch Bros' 10% same-store sales growth last quarter was partially due to an increase in customer traffic. This stands in stark contrast to Starbucks in its fiscal 2024 second quarter (ended Mar. 31) when the company saw a 7% year-over-year drop in transactions in North America -- the same time and place Dutch Bros was enjoying solid growth.
This doesn't mean Starbucks is doomed. But management's commentary about the weather and the need to offer better promotions to drive traffic has a hollow ring to it when looking at the results from Dutch Bros.
Dutch Bros stock has climbed this year on the strength of its Q1 results. The brand indeed seems healthy, which is good in light of the company's goals.
Management plans to open at least 150 new locations this year, and it intends to continue opening new locations at a brisk pace as it marches toward 4,000 locations long term. Given the brand's popularity, this could be a winning strategy, and it's one of the most aggressive growth plans in the restaurant industry.
2. Black Rifle Coffee
Black Rifle Coffee sells coffee beans and grounds direct to consumers through a subscription service. It also operates a select few stores, has ready-to-drink options in convenience stores, and is increasingly getting its products into major retailers such as Walmart. And its growing presence in retail stores -- known as wholesale revenue -- is what's really impressing investors right now.
The comparison to Starbucks is again enlightening. In its fiscal 2023, channel development revenue for Starbucks was roughly flat year over year -- this includes coffee in grocery stores and ready-to-drink products at convenience stores. But management noted a drop in ready-to-drink sales last year.
In the first half of fiscal 2024, Starbucks' channel development revenue is down 10% year over year. In part, this is due to the sale of its Seattle's Best Coffee brand, but management also noted "SKU optimization," which could mean it pulled some products from shelves because they weren't selling well.
By contrast, Black Rifle Coffee seems to be thriving in grocery stores and convenience channels. In Q1 2024, the company's wholesale revenue increased 51% year over year compared to a 48% increase in distribution, suggesting it's generating more sales per point of distribution.
When it comes to ready-to-drink coffee products, Black Rifle Coffee is now in nearly 87,000 doors as of last quarter, up 38%. And data suggests the company is growing sales in its areas of distribution faster than comparable products. Moreover, management recently restructured operations for its ready-to-drink business, hoping to drive better profitability as production scales for these products.
Black Rifle Coffee stock hit an all-time low in late 2023, which is important context for its gains in 2024 so far. However, investors have been increasingly encouraged as the brand has found traction outside of its traditional subscription business. It's why the stock is winning so far this year.
Don't count it out completely, but Starbucks does have some work to do when it comes to winning back some customers and boosting its profit margins. By comparison, Dutch Bros and Black Rifle Coffee are early in their growth stories. Considering both companies have long-term expansion plans, these stocks could continue to outperform the industry leader and the broad market.

Starbucks Stock Is Underperforming the S&P 500 in 2024, but These Other 2 Coffee Stocks Are Soaring.

With only a garage and a one-pound roaster, three friends founded Black Rifle Coffee (NYSE: BRCC) in 2014. It started as a direct-to-consumer (DTC) coffee company with a strongly patriotic brand identity. And from those humble beginnings, things have really taken off. The company, which generated nearly $400 million in revenue last year, expects to generate at least $430 million this year.
While the business has been successful (going from nothing to $400 million in 10 years is impressive), Black Rifle Coffee's reception on the stock market has been another story. Shares started off at $10 in 2021 through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). And on Feb. 7, 2022 -- the day the SPAC completed its merger with Black Rifle Coffee -- the stock closed above $16. But after climbing for much of March to a peak above $30 in early April, the shares consistently tumbled lower, dropping to below $3 per share late last year.
Now, however, it appears that Black Rifle Coffee stock is finally back on track. From that low, it has risen by more than 100% over the last eight months to around $6 a share. That's a far better return over that time than the S&P 500 or larger coffee companies Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) and Dutch Bros (NYSE: BROS) have delivered.

Are things suddenly going better for Black Rifle Coffee, or is this a case of stock market irrationality?
Black Rifle Coffee's growth deserves attention
DTC sales aren't the heartbeat of Black Rifle Coffee's business anymore. In the first quarter, the company's DTC segment accounted for only 33% of total sales. Moreover, DTC sales were down 11% year over year.
Nowadays, the company sells most of its products in retail stores. It's coffee is easier than ever to find because the company has struck deals with retailers including Walmart and 7-Eleven. It also more recently inked an agreement with beverage giant Keurig Dr Pepper.
Walmart is the largest brick-and-mortar retail business in the country, so it's obvious how getting on its shelves has catalyzed revenue growth for Black Rifle Coffee. Keurig Dr Pepper owns some of the most popular home-brewing devices, again extending Black Rifle Coffee's reach.
The 7-Eleven partnership is also significant, as are similar deals with its convenience store peers Circle K and Casey's General Stores. Black Rifle Coffee started making canned ready-to-drink beverages that are now available in more than 87,000 stores.
In terms of growth rates over the last few years, Dutch Bros still takes the prize among these three coffee stocks. But Black Rifle Coffee is putting up pretty good numbers of its own.

I believe it's reasonable to think this is a coffee brand with staying power. The company puts an extra emphasis on veterans and first responders with its corporate values and charitable giving. The company also set the long-term goal of hiring 10,000 veterans. Considering that some veterans struggle to find work after exiting the military, that's the kind of mission that people can rally behind. After all, many people either are veterans or are related to veterans.
Why Black Rifle Coffee stock is up
After that initial period of enthusiasm, investors seemed to give up on Black Rifle Coffee stock, dropping its price-to-sales (P/S) ratio to well below 1 -- a cheap valuation.

It's unusual for a high-growth company such as Black Rifle Coffee to trade at a P/S below 1, but it can happen if the business is burning cash. And this company was.
However, in Q1, it posted its first quarter of positive net income since it went public. Granted, that profit was meager at less than $2 million. But management also said it expects to post a full-year profit. With the business apparently having turned a corner, investors are responding accordingly.
If Black Rifle Coffee can sustain profitable growth, I believe this business will be worth a lot more several years from now. But is that expectation reasonable?
Regarding profits, I believe Black Rifle Coffee is on a more sustainable path. Its canned beverages are taking market share and providing some of its top-line growth. And management just made changes to manufacturing and distribution that should result in higher profit margins.
Regarding growth, Black Rifle Coffee is still relatively small, with less than $400 million in 2023 revenue. I believe its brand message has enough appeal to develop a loyal customer base, and can support much larger revenue.
It's not a sure bet. But Black Rifle Coffee's business is on a good trajectory and its stock trades at a reasonable price. Therefore, it could make a good addition to a balanced portfolio of stocks.

This Coffee Stock Has Quietly Doubled in Just the Last 8 Months, and It Isn't Dutch Bros or Starbucks

BRC Inc. (BRCC) reported $98.39 million in revenue for the quarter ended March 2024, representing a year-over-year increase of 17.9%. EPS of $0.01 for the same period compares to -$0.08 a year ago.
The reported revenue compares to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $97.78 million, representing a surprise of +0.63%. The company delivered an EPS surprise of +133.33%, with the consensus EPS estimate being -$0.03.
