Stocks also have support from a +42% surge in Oracle to a record high, leading technology stocks higher after it gave an aggressive outlook for its cloud business, driven by demand for AI infrastructure.
The Dow Jones Industrials are being pressured today by weakness in Apple, which is down more than -2% on market disappointment in the launch of the latest versions of the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. Also, the escalation of geopolitical tensions in Europe is negative for stocks after Poland shot down drones that crossed into its territory during Russia’s latest air strike on Ukraine, calling it an “act of aggression.”
Signs of ongoing deflation in China are negative for China’s economy and global growth prospects. China’s Aug CPI fell -0.4% y/y, weaker than expectations of -0.2% y/y and the steepest decline in 6 months. Also, China’s Aug PPI fell -2.9% y/y, right on expectations, and the thirty-fifth consecutive month that producer prices have declined on a year-on-year basis.
US MBA mortgage applications rose +9.2% in the week ended September 5, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +6.6% and the refinancing sub-index up +12.2%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell -15 bp to an 11-month low of 6.49% from 6.64% in the prior week.
The US Aug final-demand PPI eased to +2.6% y/y from +3.1% y/y in July, a smaller increase than expectations of +3.3% y/y. Aug PPI ex-food and energy eased to +2.8% y/y from +3.4% y/y in July, a smaller increase than expectations of +3.5% y/y.
Market focus this week will be on any trade or tariff news. On Thursday, the US Aug CPI is expected to climb to +2.9% y/y from +2.7% y/y in July, and Aug CPI ex-food and energy is expected to increase +3.1% y/y, unchanged from July’s +3.1%. Also, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to fall by -2,000 to 235,000. On Friday, the University of Michigan’s Sep US consumer sentiment index is expected to slip -0.2 to 58.0.
The markets are now pricing in a 100% chance of a -25 bp rate cut and a 12% chance of a -50 bp rate cut at the upcoming FOMC meeting on Sep 16-17. After the fully expected -25 bp rate cut at the Sep 16-17 meeting, the markets are discounting a 79% chance of a second -25 bp rate cut at the Oct 28-29 meeting. The markets are now pricing in an overall -74 bp rate cut in the federal funds rate by year-end to 3.64% from the current 4.38% rate.
Overseas stock markets today are mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell from a 1.5-week high and is down -0.17%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed up +0.13%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +0.87%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) today are up by +4 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down by -3.1 bp to 4.057%. T-notes erased early losses and moved higher today after US Aug producer prices eased more than expected, a dovish factor for Fed policy and cementing expectations for at least a 25 bp rate cut at next week’s FOMC meeting.
Strength in stocks today is limiting gains in T-note prices. Also, supply pressures are weighing on T-notes as the Treasury will auction $39 billion of 10-year T-notes later today as part of this week’s $119 billion slate of T-note and T-bond auctions.
Concerns about Fed independence are negatively impacting T-note prices due to President Trump’s attempt to fire Fed Governor Cook and Stephen Miran’s intention to hold a Fed Governor position while remaining technically in his White House role on the Council of Economic Advisors.
European government bond yields today are mixed. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 1-month low of 2.631% and is down -0.5 bp to 2.654%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +1.2 bp to 4.636%.
Swaps are discounting no chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at Thursday’s policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
Oracle (ORCL) is up more than +42% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after giving a robust forecast for its cloud-infrastructure business, a sign of strong AI-related demand. After fiscal year 2026, the company sees cloud infrastructure revenue in the subsequent four years of $32 billion, $73 billion, $114 billion, and $114 billion.
Stocks tied to AI computing infrastructure are rallying after Oracle forecasted faster-than-expected revenue growth in its cloud infrastructure unit. CoreWeave (CRWV) is up more than +19% and Broadcom (AVGO) is up more than +10% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, Arista Networks (ANET) is up more than +5%, and Nvidia (NVDA) is up more than +4% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones industrials. In addition, Super Micro Computer (SMCI) is up more than +4% and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is up more than +3%.
Today’s rally in AI-infrastructure stocks is also boosting power-producing stocks, as the increase in AI usage will require more power. Vertiv Holdings (VRT) is up more than +11%, and Vistra Corp (VST) is up more than +6%. Also, Constellation Energy (CEG) and GE Vernova (GEV) are up more than +5%, and Talen Energy (TLN) is up more than +4%.
Travere Therapeutics (TVTX) is up more than +27% after the FDA informed the company that an advisory committee is no longer needed for its supplemental drug application for the treatment of a rare kidney disorder.
GameStop (GME) is up more than +5% after reporting Q2 hardware and accessories net sales of $592.1 million, well above the consensus of $434.8 million.
Bill Holdings (BILL) is up more than +4% after the Financial Times reported that Elliot Management has built a large stake in the company.
Johnson Controls International Plc (JCI) is up more than +3% after raising its quarterly cash dividend to 40 cents per share, above expectations of 37 cents per share.
Synopsys (SNPS) is down more than -34% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $12.76-$12.80, well below the consensus of $15.11.
Chewy (CHWY) is down more than -15% despite reporting better-than-expected Q2 results, with analysts citing disappointment that the results weren’t even better.
Humana (HUM) is down more than -2%, adding to Tuesday’s -12% plunge, after a post on LinkedIn, cited by analysts at Leerink Partners, stated that changes in the thresholds for Medicare quality ratings that pay bonuses to health plans are harder to get. Humana receives most of its revenue from selling private Medicare Advantage plans. Other health insurers are also under pressure, with HCA Healthcare (HCA), Molina Healthcare (MOH), and Elevance Health (ELV) down more than -3%, and Centene (CNC) down more than -2%.
Trade Desk Inc (TTD) is down more than -7% after Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock to equal weight from overweight.
Apple (AAPL) is down more than -2% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials on market disappointment in the launch of the latest versions of the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods.
HP Inc (HPQ) is down more than -2% after Evercore ISI downgraded the stock to in line from outperform.

Stocks Supported as US Producer Prices Ease and Bond Yields Fall

Cisco Systems CSCO shares are trading at a premium, as suggested by the Value Score of D.
In terms of the forward 12-month price/sales, CSCO is trading at a premium of 4.45X, higher than the Zacks Computer Networks industry’s 4.16X. However, Cisco shares are trading at a discount compared with Arista Networks ANET and Broadcom AVGO. In terms of the forward 12-month P/S, Arista Networks and Broadcom shares are trading at 18.19X and 21.43X, respectively.

Meanwhile, year to date (YTD), CSCO shares have appreciated 13.8%, underperforming the Zacks Computer & Technology sector, as well as close peers Broadcom and Arista Networks. While the broader sector has appreciated 15.9%, shares of Broadcom and Arista Networks have appreciated 46.1% and 28.4%, respectively, over the same time frame.
CSCO shares have dropped 4.4% since the fourth-quarter fiscal 2025 results were reported on Aug. 13. The drop can be attributed to apparently slowing momentum in networking revenues, which grew 12% year over year to $7.63 billion, in the reported quarter.

However, growing AI Infrastructure orders from webscale customers is expected to boost CSCO’s prospects. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, AI Infrastructure orders from webscale customers exceeded $800 million, bringing the total revenues to $2 billion in fiscal 2025, double the management’s original expectation. Product orders from service providers and cloud customers jumped 49% year over year in the reported quarter. This was driven by triple-digit order growth in webscale customers, with orders from each of the four out of the top six webscale customers growing in the triple digits.

Expanding Portfolio to Boost Cisco’s Prospects
Cisco’s aggressive AI push and growing security dominance have been major growth drivers. Rapid acceleration in the capacity requirements of the network due to unprecedented levels of network traffic and an ever-evolving threat landscape bodes well for Cisco’s prospects. The AI opportunity further gets a boost from Cisco’s partnership with NVIDIA NVDA.
Cisco’s expanded partnership with NVIDIA, under which the companies plan to offer solutions that help build AI-ready data center networks, is a game-changer. Integration of Cisco Nexus switches with NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X architecture is offering low-latency, high-speed networking for AI clusters, driving enterprise AI orders. The Cisco Secure AI factory with NVIDIA provides a trusted blueprint for building secure AI-ready data centers for enterprises, sovereign cloud providers and newly emerging Neocloud providers.
Networking product orders grew double digits (for the fourth consecutive quarter) in the fiscal fourth quarter, driven by webscale infrastructure, switching, enterprise routing, industrial IoT and servers. Silicon One powered smart switches are very much in demand. Orders for the industrial IoT portfolio, comprised of ruggedized catalyst products, grew double digits (for the fifth consecutive quarter). Cisco expects momentum to continue in fiscal 2026 as more and more strategic infrastructure and manufacturing come onshore to the United States.
Cisco’s security business is benefiting from strong demand for both Cisco Secure Access, Hypershield and XDR. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, orders grew mid-single-digit. Splunk and Cisco synergies reported 14% year-over-year growth in new logos for Splunk. Secure Access, XDR, Hypershield and AI Defense added 750 new customers collectively in the reported quarter.
CSCO Offers Positive 2026 Guidance
For fiscal 2026, CSCO expects revenues to be $59-$60 billion compared with $56.7 billion reported in fiscal 2025. Non-GAAP earnings are expected between $4 per share and $4.06 per share compared with $3.81 per share reported in fiscal 2025.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for CSCO’s fiscal 2026 revenues is pegged at $56.58 billion, indicating growth of 5.2% on a year-over-year basis. The consensus mark for CSCO’s fiscal 2026 earnings is currently pegged at $4.04 per share, up three cents over the past 30 days, indicating year-over-year growth of 6%.

Here’s Why CSCO Stock is a Hold Right Now
An expanding portfolio makes Cisco well-positioned for sustained growth in an evolving tech landscape. AI push is noteworthy, along with a growing footprint in the security space. These trends bode well for CSCO’s long-term prospects.
However, a stretched valuation is a headwind. A challenging macroeconomic condition due to tariffs, as well as stiff competition in the networking and security domain, is expected to hurt Cisco’s prospects in the near term.

Is Cisco Stock's 4.42X PS Still Worth it? Buy, Sell, or Hold?

In trading on Wednesday, the First Trust NASDAQ Technology Dividend Index Fund ETF is outperforming other ETFs, up about 5% on the day. Components of that ETF showing particular strength include shares of Oracle, up about 42.9% and shares of Broadcom, up about 10.2% on the day.
And underperforming other ETFs today is the VanEck Rare Earth/Strategic Metals ETF, down about 4.2% in Wednesday afternoon trading. Among components of that ETF with the weakest showing on Wednesday were shares of Sigma Lithium, lower by about 3.2%, and shares of MP Materials, lower by about 2.1% on the day.

Wednesday's ETF Movers: TDIV, REMX

In early trading on Wednesday, shares of Broadcom topped the list of the day's best performing components of the Nasdaq 100 index, trading up 6.9%. Year to date, Broadcom registers a 55.3% gain.
And the worst performing Nasdaq 100 component thus far on the day is Synopsys, trading down 33.6%. Synopsys is lower by about 17.3% looking at the year to date performance.
Two other components making moves today are Cadence Design Systems, trading down 8.7%, and Constellation Energy, trading up 5.3% on the day.

In early trading on Wednesday, shares of Oracle topped the list of the day's best performing components of the S&P 500 index, trading up 35.4%. Year to date, Oracle registers a 96.2% gain.
And the worst performing S&P 500 component thus far on the day is Synopsys, trading down 33.6%. Synopsys is lower by about 17.3% looking at the year to date performance.
Two other components making moves today are Cadence Design Systems, trading down 8.7%, and Broadcom, trading up 6.9% on the day.

Here's why shares of these two companies can be smart picks now.
1. Broadcom
Broadcom has emerged as a key player in AI infrastructure, with a diversified portfolio of custom AI accelerators, advanced networking solutions, and enterprise software. The company serves several hyperscale customers and large AI model developers, providing them with the custom AI chips and networking technologies required to build large-scale AI clusters.
The numbers highlight the success of Broadcom's business model. In the third quarter of fiscal 2025 (ended Aug. 3), Broadcom reported revenue of $16 billion, up 22% on a year-over-year basis. AI semiconductor sales rose 63% year over year to $5.2 billion.
A major driver of this growth is the company's expanding custom accelerator or XPU business, as hyperscalers have been increasingly opting for custom AI silicon to improve performance and optimize costs. Demand from its existing three hyperscale customers continues to soar. Broadcom expects each of these three customers to deploy 1 million AI clusters by 2027, with a significant portion of these AI clusters involving custom accelerators.
Broadcom has also secured more than $10 billion in AI rack orders from a fourth hyperscaler customer, most likely OpenAI, and expects to commence shipping in 2026.
Networking has also become a significant catalyst for growth. As hyperscalers build massive AI clusters, they are increasingly facing challenges with speed, latency, and power efficiency. Broadcom's Ethernet switches and fabric routers are designed to address these bottlenecks, enabling efficient connection and network congestion management within data centers, as well as across data centers located on multiple sites.
By leveraging open Ethernet standards, Broadcom's Tomahawk switches and Jericho fabric routers provide higher flexibility at lower costs compared to proprietary networking solutions. Hence, Broadcom is well positioned to capture an even larger share of the AI networking market.
The company's enterprise software segment is also gaining momentum. VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0, launched this year, enables enterprises to run AI and other workloads securely on private or hybrid cloud environments at lower costs. Software revenue grew 17% year over year to $6.8 billion in the third quarter.
Broadcom's stock is not inexpensive, trading at approximately 36 times forward earnings. However, the valuation seems justified considering the company's leadership in custom AI compute, networking, and enterprise software. With a solid backlog of $110 billion and an expanding customer base, Broadcom looks well positioned as a long-term AI growth story.
2. Meta Platforms
Meta Platforms is no longer just a social media company or a digital advertising giant. By combining an unmatched user base with massive AI investment, the company has rapidly transformed itself into a global AI powerhouse.
In the second quarter of fiscal 2025 (ended June 30), Meta's revenue climbed 22% year over year to $47.5 billion, while net income was a solid $18.3 billion. Operating margin expanded to 43%, and free cash flow reached $8.5 billion. The company returned nearly $11.1 billion through buybacks and dividends, while still ending the quarter with $47.1 billion in cash and $28.8 billion in debt.
Meta is aggressively leveraging advanced AI technologies to enhance content recommendations, user engagement, ad targeting, and ad monetization across its platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads.
The company's AI-powered Andromeda ad retrieval models, generative ads recommendation system (GEM), and Lattice ad ranking models have helped boost ad conversion rates on Facebook and Instagram. Instagram Threads is also rapidly gaining traction, with more than 350 million monthly active users as of the end of the first quarter. Threads will soon become a solid monetization avenue for the company in the coming quarters.
Another significant competitive advantage is Meta's open-source Llama ecosystem. Llama models are now used widely by developers, who are often key decision-makers in enterprise technology adoption.
Meta has also planned to spend $66 billion to $72 billion in fiscal 2025 to expand its generative AI capacity by investing in servers, networking, and data centers. The company plans to increase capital investments in AI data center capacity even more in 2026. These investments in AI infrastructure capacity are expected to prove highly lucrative, as the company begins to increasingly utilize in-house AI capabilities at scale to enhance its core businesses.
Despite the many pros, Meta faces significant risks. The company's digital advertising business is highly exposed to the overall state of the economy. The company also faces competitive pressures, while high AI-related capital expenditures can prove to be a drag on its profitability in the short term. But it is undeniable that the long-term prospects of scaling its AI infrastructure and Llama ecosystem remain attractive.
Meta trades at nearly 28.5 times forward earnings, which is not a cheap valuation. However, with strong financials, a growing moat built around its app ecosystem and AI infrastructure, and a commitment to returning significant value to shareholders, the stock appears to be a worthwhile buy now.

Broadcom AVGO shares have risen 13% since the company reported third-quarter fiscal 2025 results on Sept. 4. The company reported non-GAAP earnings of $1.69 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.81% and jumping 28% year over year. Revenues rallied 22% year over year to $15.95 billion and beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.78%.
Strong portfolio and rich partner base are helping drive AVGO’s prospects. Broadcom is benefiting from an expanding portfolio, rich partner base, solid VMware business, strong balance sheet and impressive free cash flow.
AVGO has outperformed its broader Zacks Computer and Technology sector and peers, including Advanced Micro Devices AMD, Cisco Systems CSCO and Marvell Technology MRVL, year to date (YTD). While AMD and Cisco shares have returned 25.1% and 13% YTD, Marvell Technology shares have dropped 40.5%. The broader sector has returned 15.4%.

Broadcom is benefiting from strong demand for XPUs, which are a type of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) necessary to train Generative AI models. They require complex integration of compute, memory, and I/O capabilities to achieve the necessary performance at lower power consumption and cost. Alphabet and Meta Platforms are notable users of Broadcom’s ASICs.
In the third quarter of fiscal 2025, AI revenues surged 63% year over year to $5.2 billion. XPUs accounted for 65% of AI revenues in the reported quarter. Consolidated backlog hit $110 billion, and the company has secured more than $10 billion of orders for AI racks based on XPU demand. AVGO’s networking portfolio is gaining from strong demand for Tomahawk 5 and 6 products, as well as the Jericho 4 Ethernet fabric router.
Broadcom’s rich partner base, including NVIDIA, Arista Networks, Alphabet, Dell Technologies, Meta Platform, and Supermicro, has been a key catalyst. These factors are expected to drive strong AI revenues that are expected to grow 66% year over year to $6.2 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025.
AVGO expects fourth-quarter fiscal 2025 Semiconductor revenues of $10.7 billion, suggesting 30% year-over-year growth. Infrastructure Software revenues are expected to grow 15% year over year to $6.7 billion.
Strong Liquidity Bodes Well for AVGO
Broadcom benefits from a strong balance sheet and its free cash-flow-generating ability. As of Aug. 3, 2025, cash and cash equivalents were $10.72 billion, and Broadcom generated $7.17 billion in cash flow from operations. Free cash flow was $7.02 billion and accounted for 44% of revenue at the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2025.
The strong balance sheet is helping AVGO lower leverage, pay consistent dividends and return cash to shareholders through buybacks. Broadcom paid $2.8 billion in cash dividends in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025.
AVGO’s Q3 Gross Margin to Suffer From Unfavorable XPU Mix
Broadcom’s fourth-quarter fiscal 2025 guidance reflects a 70 basis point sequential decline in gross margin due to a higher mix of lower-margin XPUs. A higher mix of lower-margin XPUs in the revenue mix is expected to keep gross margin under pressure throughout fiscal 2025.
Broadcom expects non-AI semiconductor revenues to grow in the low double digits sequentially to roughly $4.6 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. Broadband, server storage and wireless are expected to improve, while enterprise networking is expected to decline sequentially. Sluggish non-AI business remains a headwind, and Broadcom expects to see a U-shaped recovery by mid-2026 or late 2026.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal 2025 earnings is pegged at $6.61 per share, unchanged over the past 30 days, indicating 35.73% growth over fiscal 2024’s reported figure.
