The Material and Substrate segment manufactures and sells consumables and machinery for lapping and polishing of materials, such as silicon wafers for semiconductor products; sapphire substrates for LED lighting and mobile devices; silicon carbide wafers for LED and power device applications; various glass and silica components for 3D image transmission; quartz and ceramic components for telecommunications devices; and medical device components, and optical and photonics applications. It also offers substrate products comprising of double-sided wafer cleaning system, entegrity head tester, substrate carrier, substrate polishing templates, double-sided lapping and polishing machines, single-sided polisher, and substrate process chemicals. The company sells its products through sales personnel, as well as a network of independent sales representatives and distributors. Intel (INTC) Beats Q4 Earnings and Revenue Estimates

Celestica (CLS) came out with quarterly earnings of $1.11 per share, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. This compares to earnings of $0.76 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.

Celestica (CLS) Matches Q4 Earnings Estimates

Texas Instruments delivered earnings of $1.30 per share in the fourth quarter, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 11 cents but marking a 12.8% decline from the prior year. Revenues of $4.01 billion also topped consensus expectations by $136 million but fell 1.7% year over year.
This decline was largely attributed to a significant weakness in the Embedded Processing segment, which accounted for 15.3% of total revenues. While Embedded Processing revenues of $613 million beat estimates of $576 million, they declined a sharp 18% year over year, highlighting ongoing softness in demand.

Embedded Processing: A Drag on TXN’s Growth
Texas Instruments Embedded Processing performance in the fourth quarter of 2024 reflects several underlying challenges. This segment faced a cyclical downturn exacerbated by weakened demand across key end markets, particularly in industrial applications.
One significant factor was the underutilization of the Lehi factory, which supports a large portion of the Embedded Processing business. Reduced factory loadings, aimed at managing inventory levels, put downward pressure on revenues and margins. Management confirmed that lower capacity utilization disproportionately impacted the profitability of Embedded Processing, further underscoring operational inefficiencies during the quarter.
Additionally, broader macroeconomic challenges contributed to weaker customer demand. Industrial automation and energy infrastructure markets, key consumers of embedded technologies, struggled to find a bottom, impacting revenue visibility. The slow recovery in global demand for electronics and embedded systems weighed heavily on this segment.
While Texas Instruments continues to invest in expanding its Embedded portfolio and transitioning manufacturing operations to in-house facilities, these efforts are still in progress. As a result, the Embedded Processing segment remains in a transitional phase, making it particularly vulnerable to cyclical pressures and operational constraints in the near term.
On a positive note, Texas Instruments’ Analog segment, which represents the bulk of its revenues (79.2%), grew 2% year over year in the fourth quarter. This recovery follows eight consecutive quarters of declines, demonstrating resilience in the face of industry-wide challenges.
Margin Pressures and Guidance Signal Caution for TXN
Gross profit for the fourth quarter came in at $2.31 billion, representing 58% of revenues. This marked a contraction of 200 basis points in gross margin on a year-over-year basis due to lower factory utilization, higher depreciation costs and reduced revenues.
For the first quarter of 2025, Texas Instruments expects revenues in the range of $3.74 billion to $4.06 billion and earnings per share between 94 cents and $1.16. These projections point to continued near-term challenges, particularly in the industrial and automotive markets, which show no clear signs of recovery.
Following Texas Instruments’ fourth-quarter results announcement, the Zacks Consensus Estimate has witnessed sharp downward earnings estimate revisions for the first quarter and full year 2025. The consensus mark for the first quarter earnings has been revised downward by 8 cents to $1.08 per share. Similarly, for the full year 2025, it has declined to $5.59 from $5.72 per share 30 days ago.
This pessimism about Texas Instruments’ near-term prospects has dragged down the share price of the company. The stock plunged 7.5% last Friday. Over the past year, TXN has soared 11.7%, underperforming the Zacks Semiconductor – General industry’s gain of 97.4%. Soft Embedded Demand Hurts TXN's Q4 Revenues: How to Play the Stock?

Portfolio Expansion in Industrial Market Aids STM’s Growth
STMicroelectronics’ sustained focus on strengthening its industrial market portfolio is likely to drive growth for the company over the long run. Recently, it unveiled the EVLDRIVE101-HPD motor-drive reference design. It is a circular PCB with a diameter of just 50mm that houses a 750W power stage, STM32G0 microcontroller, and 3-phase gate driver. Robots, drones and drives for industrial machinery like pumps and process automation systems can all be easily equipped with this design.
The company is also continuously advancing its STM32 microcontroller. The new ultra-low-power STM32 MCUs, which can minimize energy consumption by up to 50%, are advantageous for the industrial end. It makes it possible for designs that make use of energy-harvesting technologies, such as solar cells, to operate without batteries by reducing the impact of discarded batteries and the frequency of battery replacements.
In order to streamline the development of next-generation wireless solutions for consumer and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications, STMicroelectronics unveiled the first product of its strategic partnership with QUALCOMM Incorporated QCOM. The partnership intends to provide IoT modules initially by utilizing QUALCOMM’s industry-leading wireless connectivity solutions and STM's robust STM32 ecosystem.
Easily integrated with any STM32 microcontroller (MCU) or microprocessor (MPU), the first of these modules, the ST67W611M1, has a Qualcomm QCC743 multiprotocol connectivity system-on-a-chip (SoC) pre-loaded with Wi-Fi6, Bluetooth 5.3 qualified, and Thread combo. For future-proof connectivity, the module will support the Matter protocol over Wi-Fi, enabling the STM32 portfolio to be easily accessed by the Matter ecosystem.
Automotive Market to Boost STM’s Long-Term Prospects
As the next step in their strategic partnership, Ampere announced a multi-year agreement with STMicroelectronics and Renault Group on the supply of Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules, starting in 2026. This agreement is part of their collaboration on a powerbox for the inverter for Ampere's ultra-efficient electric powertrain. Utilizing Ampere's knowledge of EV technology and STMicroelectronics' knowledge of advanced power electronics, the two companies collaborated to optimize the power module, a crucial component of the powerbox, for the e-powertrain's maximum performance and competitiveness.
The fourth generation STPOWER SiC MOSFET technology was recently introduced by STMicroelectronics. In terms of robustness, power density and efficiency, Generation 4 technology sets new standards. The new technology is specifically tailored for traction inverters, the essential part of EV powertrains while meeting the demands of the automotive and industrial markets. As part of its dedication to innovation, the company intends to launch more sophisticated SiC technology advancements through 2027.

STM projects midpoint revenues for the fourth quarter of 2024 to be $3.32 billion, indicating a 22.4% year-over-year decrease. STMicroelectronics Plunges 50% in 2024: How to Play the Stock in 2025

STMicroelectronics STM shares have plunged 47.5% on a year-to-date (YTD) basis against the Zacks Semiconductor-General industry and the Zacks Computer & Technology sector’s return of 126.4% and 32.3%, respectively.
Over the same time frame, shares of its competitors, including NVIDIA NVDA, Amtech Systems ASYS and Texas Instruments TXN, have climbed 172.7%, 31.2% and 11.5%, respectively.
This underperformance is a result of the decline in order entry and customer backlogs during the third quarter, particularly in the auto and industrial markets. Expansion in the Industrial Market to Aid STM’s Growth
STMicroelectronics recently introduced the EVLDRIVE101-HPD motor-drive reference design, which is a noteworthy move.
