The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.17%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.23%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.58%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) are up +0.18%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) are up +0.68%.
Stocks are climbing today on the prospect of a more accommodative Federal Reserve. The 10-year T-note yield fell to a 5-month low today of 4.05%. The markets have fully priced in a 25 bp rate cut by the Fed at next week's FOMC meeting and priced in a 10% chance for a 50 bp rate cut. However, this week's US Aug CPI and PPI reports will show how much room the Fed has to cut interest rates and support the job market. Stocks fell last Friday after the weaker-than-expected US Aug payroll report sparked concerns that the Fed was falling behind in supporting a rapidly cooling US labor market.

Weaker-than-expected trade news from China is negative for global growth prospects after China's Aug exports rose +4.4% y/y, weaker than expectations of +5.5% y/y. Also, Aug imports rose +1.3% y/y, weaker than expectations of +3.4% y/y.
Market focus this week will be on any trade or tariff news. On Tuesday, the BLS will release annual benchmark revisions to US payrolls in the year through March. On Wednesday, Aug PPI final demand is expected to climb +3.3% y/y, unchanged from July, and Aug PPI ex-food and energy is expected to ease to +3.5% y/y from +3.7% y/y in July. On Thursday, Aug CPI is expected to climb to +2.9% y/y from +2.7% y/y in July, and Aug CPI ex-food and energy is expected to increase +3.1% y/y, unchanged from July. Also, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to fall by -3,000 to 234,000. On Friday, the University of Michigan Sep consumer sentiment index is expected to slip -0.2 to 58.0.
The markets are now pricing in a 13% chance of a 50 bp rate cut at the upcoming FOMC meeting on Sep 16-17, versus the previous expectations of a zero chance of that 50 bp rate cut. After the fully expected -25 bp rate cut at the Sep 16-17 meeting, the markets are now discounting an 81% chance of a second -25 bp rate cut at the Oct 28-29 meeting, up from a 54% chance as of late Thursday. The markets are now pricing in an overall -76 bp rate cut in the federal funds rate by year-end to 3.62% from the current 4.38% rate.
Regarding tariffs, a federal appeals court ruled late last month that President Trump exceeded his authority by imposing global tariffs without Congressional approval, but the court let the tariffs remain in place while appeals continue. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Court said, "The statute bestows significant authority on the President to undertake a number of actions in response to a declared national emergency, but none of these actions explicitly include the power to impose tariffs, duties, or the like, or the power to tax." The case now appears to be headed to the Supreme Court for a final decision. According to Bloomberg Economics, the average US tariff will rise to 15.2% if rates are implemented as announced, up from 13.3% earlier, and significantly higher than the 2.3% in 2024 before the tariffs were announced.
Overseas stock markets today are higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.57%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.38%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 rose to a 2.5-week high and closed up +1.45%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) are up by +4 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down by -2.1 bp to 4.053%. The 10-year T-note yield dropped to a 5-month low today at 4.051% on carryover support from last Friday's weak US unemployment report that bolstered the outlook for Fed easing. Supply pressures are limiting gains in T-note prices as the Treasury will auction $119 billion of T-notes and T-bonds this week, beginning with Tuesday's $58 billion auction of 3-year T-notes.
Concerns about Fed independence are negatively impacting T-note prices due to President Trump's attempt to fire Fed Governor Cook and Stephen Miran's intention to hold a Fed Governor position while remaining technically in his White House role on the Council of Economic Advisors.
European government bond yields today are moving lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 1-month low of 2.640% and is down -2.1 bp to 2.641%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 3-week low of 4.616% and is down -2.9 bp to 4.615%.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 1% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks are mostly higher today, lifting the broader market. Nvidia (NVDA) is up more than +2% and Meta Platforms (META) is up more than +2%. Also, Alphabet (GOOGL) is up +0.92% and Tesla (TSLA) is up +0.88%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) is up +0.77%, and Amazon (AMZN) is up +0.73%. Apple (AAPL) is a laggard, down -0.15%.
Chip stocks are climbing today to provide support to the overall market. Broadcom (AVGO) is up more than +4% and added to last Friday's +9% surge to lead chip stocks higher and gainers in the S&P 500 on news that the company is teaming up with OpenAI to make artificial intelligence accelerators. Also, Lam Research (LRCX) is up more than +2% after the stock received a 30-day upside catalyst watch at Citigroup. In addition, KLA Corp (KLAC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Marvell Technology (MRVL), ARM Holding NV (ARM), and Applied Materials (AMAT) are up more than +1%.
AppLovin (APP) is up more than +10% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the stock will replace Caesars Entertainment in the S&P 500 before the start of trading on September 22.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) is up more than +11% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the stock will replace MarketAxess Holdings in the S&P 500 before the start of trading on September 22.
Rapport Therapeutics (RAPP) is up more than +171% after reporting positive topline results from its RAP-219 treatment for focal onset seizures.
Forward Industries (FORD) is up more than 67% after receiving $1.65 billion in cash and stablecoin commitments for a private investment in public equity offering to fund a Solana-focused digital asset treasury strategy.
EchoStar (SATS) is up more than +20% after SpaceX's Starlink agreed to buy wireless spectrum from the company for about $17 billion.
Premier Inc. (PINC) is up more than +8% after Patient Square Capital was said to be exploring an acquisition of the company.
Oracle (ORCL) is up more than +2% after Morgan Stanley raised its price target on the stock to $246 from $175.
Telecommunication stocks are falling today after SpaceX agreed to buy wireless spectrum from EchoStar for $17 billion. T-Mobile US (TMUS) is down more than -4% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100. Also, AT&T (T) is down more than -3%. In addition, Verizon Communications (VZ) is down more than -2% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials.
Summit Therapeutics (SMMT) is down more than -15% unveiling new data that cast doubt on the future of its ivonescimab drug to treat lung cancer.
Caesars Entertainment (CZR) is down more than -4% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the stock will be replaced by AppLovin in the S&P 500 before the start of trading on September 22.
TransDigm Group (TDG) is down more than -1% after RBC Capital Markets downgraded the stock to sector perform from outperform.
Duolingo (DUOL) is down -0.69% after Wells Fargo Securities started coverage of the stock with an underweight rating and a price target of $239.

International Business Machines Corporation IBM has declined 8.6% over the past three months against the industry’s growth of 9.8% due to macroeconomic challenges. The stock has lagged peers like Microsoft Corporation MSFT and Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN. While Microsoft has gained 4.7%, Amazon has rallied 7.1% over this period, driven by the rising adoption of enterprise capabilities of Azure OpenAI and Amazon Web Services.

Price Wars Hurt IBM Margin
IBM is facing competition from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Increasing pricing pressure is eroding margins, and profitability has trended down over the years, barring occasional spikes. The company’s ongoing, heavily time-consuming business model transition to the cloud is challenging. Weaknesses in its traditional business and foreign exchange volatility remain significant concerns.
IBM is resorting to massive job cuts to reduce operating costs. A significant part of these jobs is slated to be shifted to India under a “resource action” plan, an ongoing corporate strategy to tap the vast talent pool of the subcontinent at lower operating costs. Although the company spokesperson has refused to comment on the grapevines and commit an exact figure for the layoffs, various unidentified sources have confirmed that the action has already started, impacting employees from consulting, corporate social responsibility, cloud infrastructure, sales and internal systems teams.
A majority of job losses have also been reported in the Human Resource department as IBM aims to integrate AI (artificial intelligence) into its operations, particularly in back-office functions.

From a valuation standpoint, IBM appears to be trading expensively relative to the industry and well above its mean. Going by the price/earnings ratio, shares of International Business Machines currently trade at 21.28X, higher than 19.96 for the industry and the stock’s mean of 14.05.

Several millionaire-maker ingredients
CoreWeave appears to have several ingredients that other millionaire-maker stocks possess. Perhaps the most important one is that the company is targeting a hot market -- data centers that host artificial intelligence (AI) applications -- with tremendous growth prospects.
Top consulting firm McKinsey projects that global data center capacity could increase by a compound annual growth rate of 22% through 2030. CoreWeave isn't the only player in this market, of course. However, it enjoys a first-mover advantage in focusing exclusively on AI hyperscaling.
Another key ingredient for millionaire-maker stocks is exceptionally strong revenue growth. CoreWeave definitely checks off this box. The company's revenue skyrocketed 207% year over year in its latest quarter.
Like previous enormously successful companies, CoreWeave is doing all it can to capitalize on its growth opportunities. Co-founder and CEO Michael Intrator said in the company's second-quarter update, "We are scaling rapidly as we look to meet the unprecedented demand for AI."
The biggest long-term winners also often have huge partners. Again, CoreWeave fits the bill. For example, Nvidia has investments in only six other publicly traded companies; CoreWeave is one of them. It has also teamed up with IBM to train the technology pioneer's Granite AI models on Nvidia-powered supercomputers.
A few flies in the ointment
There are a few flies in the ointment that could prevent CoreWeave from becoming a millionaire-maker stock, though. One biggie is that competition is likely to increase significantly.
CoreWeave competes against some of the biggest cloud service providers, including Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Web Services (AWS), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Azure, and Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google Cloud. These companies' financial strength could allow them to make the investments needed to partially erase CoreWeave's first-mover advantage in AI hyperscaling.
Notably, CoreWeave isn't profitable yet despite its rapid revenue growth. The company could find it difficult to keep pace with greater capital spending by its rival tech giants. But without investing in more infrastructure to meet customer demand, CoreWeave won't be able to keep its growth rate up.
Wall Street projects slowing (albeit still impressive) revenue growth for CoreWeave next year. If a trend of decelerating revenue growth continues, it will be much harder for an initial investment of $10,000 in CoreWeave to grow to $1 million.
What about valuation? CoreWeave's price-to-sales ratio is 12.4, well above the internet services and infrastructure industry average of 8.1. However, the company's sales growth makes this seemingly steep premium less concerning.
Steep odds
Can an investment of $10,000 in CoreWeave make you a millionaire? It's possible, but the odds are stacked decidedly against it happening. To turn $10,000 into $1 million, CoreWeave's share price would need to increase by 100x. Few stocks can achieve such a feat, even over a lengthy period.
Perhaps the best way for CoreWeave to be a millionaire-maker is for you to start with a higher initial investment. For example, buying $200,000 of the stock would make the path to $1 million a much easier climb.
Of course, you don't have to become a millionaire from investing in CoreWeave for the stock to still make you a lot of money. I think the chances of this scenario occurring over the long run are much better.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is a popular stock pick among billionaire investors. Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway have owned Amazon for a long time, although they haven't added any more shares to their portfolio in a while. Other billionaires who have been increasing their positions lately include Bill Ackman at Pershing Square and Chase Coleman at Tiger Global Management.
During the second quarter, Ackman created a brand-new position in Amazon, purchasing $1.28 billion worth of shares in the quarter. This puts Amazon at a 9.3% position in his hedge fund, a clearly bullish bet.

Coleman already had an Amazon position in his portfolio, but hadn't made a meaningful addition to it in a few quarters. During Q2, the fund increased its position by 62%, another bullish sign.
So, why are these billionaire hedge fund managers so bullish on Amazon? It boils down to Amazon's rapidly rising margins.
Amazon's revenue growth looks fairly slow
On the surface, Amazon appears to be a lackluster growth stock. Amazon's revenue rose by only 13% year over year, which is slower than some of its big tech peers, but not significantly so compared to the broader market. Still, Amazon has been in this high-single-digit to low-double-digit growth rate range for some time.
That's not a recipe for a stock that can crush the market over the long term, but if you're going by that, you're looking at the wrong metric. Instead, investors should focus on Amazon's operating profit growth. As Amazon becomes a more mature business, its profits must rise faster than revenue, which can keep Amazon in the discussion of growth stocks.
Although Amazon's operating profits aren't growing as fast as they once were, the company is still posting impressive growth.
To be sure, 31% operating income growth is impressive and places Amazon alongside many of the highest-performing tech stocks. But how is Amazon achieving outsized operating profit growth compared to revenue growth?
AWS and advertising services are pushing Amazon's profit margins higher
Although many investors view Amazon as an e-commerce giant, it has multiple other facets to its business. Two of the most important for Amazon's profitability are Amazon Web Services (AWS) and advertising services.
AWS is Amazon's cloud computing division, which is experiencing a massive growth surge as artificial intelligence (AI) workloads come online. At its core, Amazon is building excess computing power and renting that out to clients to run workloads on. This is an expensive business, which is why Amazon's free cash flow is down, but it could yield massive returns on its investments years down the road.
AWS is a crucial component of Amazon's business. Despite accounting for 18% of sales in Q2, AWS generated 53% of Amazon's total operating income. Clearly, AWS is a critical piece for Amazon, and its continued success is key to Amazon's stock performance.
Advertising services are another huge part of Amazon. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't break out the operating margin for this segment, as it's grouped with its broader commerce divisions. Still, this segment has been Amazon's fastest-growing over the past few years. In Q2, ad services grew 23% year over year, marking a reacceleration of growth compared to the last few quarters.
Although it's impossible to calculate what the margins are for this division, it's safe to assume they are quite high, considering that companies that derive a ton of money from advertising (like Meta Platforms or Alphabet) have impressive operating margins.
Ad services are a key part of Amazon, and it's no coincidence that its commerce divisions' operating margins have improved rapidly during the same time ad services have risen to prominence.
Although both AWS and advertising services have had an impressive run over the past few years, their growth is far from over. As a result, Amazon's operating margins are expected to continue improving, which will enable outsized profit growth compared to revenue growth. This is a winning combination, and it's no wonder that billionaires like Chase Coleman and Bill Ackman have recently added shares. I think Amazon is a solid investment right now, and following in the footsteps of these two legendary investors is a smart idea.

These 2 Billionaires Just Loaded Up on Amazon Stock. Should You?

Even with the risk of this case weighing on Alphabet, the stock still has climbed over the past year.
Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) has been a fantastic investment opportunity for investors over the years. The company owns the world's No. 1 search engine, Google Search, and generates revenue from its growing cloud computing unit Google Cloud as well as through the sales of equipment such as smartphones. This has helped the tech giant generate billions of dollars in earnings -- and the stock price has advanced more than 600% over the past decade, scoring a win for shareholders who have held on for the long haul.
But one thing in particular has prompted some investors to hold back on buying the stock, and that's a U.S. antitrust lawsuit. Last year, in the Justice Department's case against the company, a U.S. district judge ruled that Alphabet operates an illegal Internet search monopoly. Though Alphabet stock has advanced, the case still weighed on the stock's potential as some investors worried about a dismantling of the company's valuable search business. Last week, though, that worst-case scenario was avoided. In fact, Alphabet scored a "monster win," according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. Still, after Alphabet's double-digit gain this year, is it too late to get in on this top tech stock? Let's find out.
Alphabet's antitrust troubles
So, first a quick look at the troubles Alphabet faced up until a few days ago. As mentioned, investors feared the technology powerhouse would have to break apart its Google unit, damaging its market position and growth prospects. Alphabet's ownership of an entire ecosystem of products and services allows it to operate more efficiently and share resources across these platforms, from Google Chrome to YouTube, for example.
On top of this, the idea of a breakup put into jeopardy Alphabet's deal with Apple that's allowed Google to be the search engine of choice on the iPhone. It's important to remember that Alphabet's Google Services business represents 85% of revenue -- this is thanks to advertising across Google platforms -- so any potential disruption of its current form could be highly destructive.
That's why last week's court ruling was fantastic news for Alphabet shareholders: The court said Alphabet wouldn't have to divest Google Chrome or its Android operating system, and that "plaintiffs overreached in seeking forced divestiture of these key assets." Instead, Alphabet must share search data with its competitors to level the playing field.
Ives raises his Alphabet price target
Wedbush's Ives, a technology bull, said this is a "monster win" and "removes a huge overhang on the stock," according to a CNBC report. Ives also increased his price target on the stock, which currently trades for about $232, to $245.
So now let's return to our question: This is great news for Alphabet shareholders -- but if you haven't yet bought the stock or if you aim to add to your position, is it too late to buy? After all, even though the antitrust case might have put the brakes on share performance, the stock still has advanced nearly 50% over the past year.
Here, it's important to consider valuation. In spite of the gains, Alphabet trades for only 23x forward earnings estimates, making it the cheapest of the Magnificent Seven stocks.
The Magnificent Seven are a group of technology-oriented stocks that have driven overall stock market gains over the past couple of years.
What valuation suggests
This valuation suggests Alphabet still has plenty of room to run, even in the near term. And in the long term, there's even more reason to get excited about this company. Alphabet, thanks to the court ruling, now can continue to grow its search business, and on top of this, the company has demonstrated that it could be a winner in the AI revolution. Google Cloud is a major provider of AI tools and services, and this has helped the unit's revenue climb in the double digits in recent quarters. And with an AI market forecast to reach into the trillions in a few years, Alphabet is well positioned to see more growth.
All of this means that even after Alphabet stock's recent climb, it still remains a fantastic tech player to buy and hold -- and now you can do so without worrying about any potential upset from the antitrust case.

Based in Beijing, Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) stock JD.com (JD) is one of the largest Chinese e-commerce and technology companies. Also known as Jingdong, JD.com separates itself from the competition by being an essentially vertically integrated e-commerce retailer. JD holds its own inventory, is responsible for its own logistics and deliveries, and provides its own customer service. JD is similar to Amazon (AMZN) in that it sells a wide variety of products on its e-commerce platform, including clothing, groceries, electronics, and more. Beyond e-commerce, JD also operates health, technology, real estate, and industrial segment businesses. Additionally, JD owns Ochama, a European-based retail brand with operations in the Netherlands France, and Poland.
JD Suffers from Relative Price Weakness Vs. Peers
Legendary growth investor William O’Neil once proclaimed that Wall Street’s great paradox is, “Stocks that seem too high in price and risky for most investors usually go higher and stocks that seem low and cheap often go lower.” I have largely discovered that more often than not, O’Neil’s paradox comes to fruition. That’s bad news for JD shares, which trade at $30 and are well off their all-time high of >$100. Additionally, relative price action can provide investors with valuable clues. Currently, JD shares exhibit troubling relative weakness and are -10.70% year-to-date, far underperforming top competitors like Pinduoduo (PDD) and Alibaba (BABA), which are up 27.7% and 54.4% respectively.

JD: Chinese Economic and Regulatory Concerns
While the Chinese economy has staged a recovery, it still suffers from a sky-high unemployment rate, a devastated real estate market, a weak consumer, and deflationary pressures. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions, a trade dispute with the United States, and limited room for fiscal stimulus mean that external and internal demand are likely to suffer. Beyond the economic concerns, JD investors must worry about a Chinese government that has been known to routinely crack down on its companies.
JD: Slowing Earnings Growth
JD earnings growth is declining at an alarming rate. For the current quarter, Zacks Consensus Analyst Estimates suggest that earnings growth will be -64.52%. Meanwhile, while annual revenues are expected to grow 14% in 2025, Wall Street expects full-year earnings to drop 37.09%.

JD Food Delivery Business is a Headwind
JD is making an aggressive play for the Chinese food delivery market. While the number of users for the company’s Uber (UBER) Eats or DoorDash (DASH) like business has increased, the segment has produced significant losses thus far. Worse still, the company must invest significant capital maintain its reputation for fast and reliable delivery in a highly competitive market.

Here's what investors need to know.
Remarkable past success
There aren't many success stories in corporate history that can outshine Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX). The business deserves credit for having completely upended how households consume video content. Instead of having to watch TVs or movies at certain times of the day, while paying a hefty monthly fee, Netflix gave consumers a much better experience. People could watch what they want, when they want, all at a lower price point.
This disruptive strategy has led to tremendous success. Netflix ended 2024 with 302 million total subscribers. That has driven huge revenue gains. In recent years, growth has been supported by a very successful ad-based subscription tier, as well as live events.
The company has a highly regarded brand name in the industry, so much so that Netflix is often used as a verb. And its scale is a key contributor to the financial performance. Netflix can spend significantly on content, but it's still extremely profitable. The leadership team expects to post an operating margin of about 30% in 2025 (at current foreign exchange rates), with free cash flow coming in between $8 billion and $8.5 billion.
Netflix's story is far from over. Its success is set to continue. And in 10 years, the company should be valued at $1 trillion.
Strong momentum
Netflix has become a dominant force in the media and entertainment world. The momentum keeps up to this day. Revenue soared 16% year over year in Q2 (ended June 30). And the leadership team upped their guidance, showcasing confidence, with revenue expectations of $45 billion (at the midpoint) for fiscal 2025.
These impressive results are happening in a crowded market. Competition for viewer attention is incredibly fierce these days. Netflix not only has to go up against its direct peers, like Walt Disney's Disney+ and Hulu, Warner Bros Discovery's HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Alphabet's YouTube, but there are also other activities that people can choose to do in their free time.
But looking out 10 years to 2035, it's difficult to envision a scenario where Netflix isn't a much bigger business. The streaming platform might be ubiquitous in the U.S. and Canada, but there is a lot of opportunity to expand in other regions, like Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
One critical factor
As of Sept. 4, Netflix sports a market cap of $534 billion. For the sake of simplicity, let's just say that the market cap would need to double in 10 years to hit the $1 trillion mark. This implies a 7% annualized gain. Based on the company's historical trajectory, this outcome seems very reasonable. In the past decade, Netflix's market cap has skyrocketed 1,140%.
Investors who are more bullish might be wondering if the business can get into the trillion-dollar club a lot sooner. While that's a possibility, Netflix faces one major hurdle to higher stock gains. Its valuation looks steep these days. Shares trade at a price-to-earnings ratio of 53.6, a multiple that has expanded by 167% just in the past three years.
The market has become overly enthused with Netflix's success. Nonetheless, investors shouldn't be surprised to see Netflix joining the $1 trillion club by 2035.

Walmart (NYSE: WMT) and Kohl's (NYSE: KSS) have been moving in opposite directions. But which retailer offers the better stock return potential going forward?
Walmart
Walmart has an established identity that resonates strongly with shoppers. Since opening its first discount store more than six decades ago, it has sought to offer customers low prices.
To help accomplish this, it examines costs closely. In fact, this is ingrained in the company's culture. That gives Walmart a competitive advantage over other retailers.
Management has also invested resources into technology to keep up with the competition, including e-commerce behemoth Amazon. This includes omnichannel capabilities that allow for online ordering and picking up at the store, often on the same day. It also has a subscription program, Walmart+, that offers benefits like free shipping.
Shoppers remain drawn to Walmart's selection, convenience, and low prices. At its core Walmart U.S. division, same-store sales (comps) increased 4.6% in the fiscal second quarter. Importantly, higher traffic contributed 1.5 percentage points, while increased spending accounted for the balance. The period ended on July 31.
Management bumped up its companywide sales growth outlook for this year, raising it from 3.5% to 4.25%, using the midpoint of its guidance. The figure excludes foreign-currency exchange translations.
Owning the shares has been beneficial for shareholders over the years. In just the last year through Sept. 2, Walmart's stock appreciated 26.7%, nearly double the S&P 500's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) 13.6%.
The valuation has become more reasonable during this period, with the stock's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio contracting from 40 to 36.
Still, investors expect the market-beating stock returns to continue, given that the shares trade at a higher P/E multiple than the S&P 500's P/E of 30.
2. Kohl's
Kohl's offers a broad range of offerings across categories like apparel, accessories, beauty, and home products. It seeks to sell these items at moderate prices.
Unlike Walmart, its offerings haven't been attracting shoppers. Kohl's has struggled with traffic and sales for some time, despite various initiatives, such as offering people the ability to return items they bought on Amazon at Kohl's stores.
The company's fiscal second-quarter comps fell 4.2%. This helped drive its operating income, adjusted for certain nonoperating and nonrecurring items, down to $161 million from $165 million. The results are for the quarter that ended Aug. 2.
Management doesn't expect sales to improve anytime soon, either. It projects this year's comps to drop 4% to 5%.
It's hard to see management's turnaround plans, since Kohl's doesn't have a permanent chief executive officer. The company has cycled through CEOs, including the board of directors dismissing CEO Ashley Buchanan earlier this year after only a few months on the job due to the discovery of an inappropriate relationship.
Investors have sent the shares down 16.8% over the last year. The stock, with a P/E multiple of 9, trades at a much lower valuation than the S&P 500, however.
Which way to invest?
It's tempting to view Kohl's as a value stock. After all, it trades at a P/E ratio that's one-third of the S&P 500's P/E multiple. However, with slumping sales and profitability and no clear plan to reverse course, I'd stay away from the stock.
Walmart, with its consistent ability to draw customers and invest in the future, is the clear choice for me, despite the above-market valuation. It's worth paying more, especially given the company typically performs well during challenging economic times, as more people shop at Walmart due to its prices.
