Archer-Daniels-Midland Company engages in the procurement, transportation, storage, processing, and merchandising of agricultural commodities, ingredients, flavors, and solutions in the United States, Switzerland, the Cayman Islands, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, and internationally. It operates in three segments: Ag Services and Oilseeds, Carbohydrate Solutions, and Nutrition. The company originates, merchandises, stores, and transports agricultural raw materials, such as oilseeds and soft seeds. It also engages in the agricultural commodity and feed product import, export, and distribution; and various structured trade finance activities. In addition, the company offers soybean meal and oil; vegetable and salad oils and protein meals; ingredients for the food, feed, energy, and industrial customers; margarine, shortening, and other food products; and partially refined oils to produce biodiesel and glycols for use in chemicals, paints, and other industrial products. Further, it provides peanuts, peanut-derived ingredients, and cotton cellulose pulp; sweeteners, corn and wheat starches, syrup, glucose, wheat flour, and dextrose; alcohol, and other food and animal feed ingredients; ethyl alcohol and ethanol; corn gluten feed and meal; distillers' grains; corn germ; and citric acids. Additionally, the company provides proteins, natural flavors, flavor systems, natural colors, emulsifiers, soluble fiber, polyols, hydrocolloids, probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, enzymes, and botanical extracts; and other specialty food and feed ingredients; edible beans; formula feeds, and animal health and nutrition products; and contract and private label pet treats and food products. It also offers futures commission merchant; commodity brokerage services; cash margins and securities pledged to commodity exchange clearinghouse; and cash pledged as security under certain insurance arrangements. The company was founded in 1902 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

For ADM, the picture looks like that of a large, financially stable business that is not cheap on earnings and is facing noticeable margin pressure. Revenue remains very large and overall stays at a high level, while the cash position is strong: cash on hand rose to $10.15 billion, which supports liquidity and reduces risk. The debt burden looks comfortable: debt/equity of 0.27 is below the industry median, long-term debt declined over the year, and a current ratio of 1.31 and a quick ratio of 0.86 indicate normal short-term resilience. At the same time, profitability is weaker than the industry across almost all key metrics: gross margin, operating margin, net profit margin, ROA, ROE, and return on tangible equity are noticeably below the median, which limits revaluation potential. It is especially important that operating profit margin and net margin remain very thin, making the business sensitive to commodity prices, logistics, and the agribusiness cycle. On the other hand, absolute profitability does not look weak: net income, operating income, and EBITDA are positive and generally support the quality of cash flow. The valuation multiples send a mixed signal: P/S and P/FCF look attractive relative to the industry, but P/E is noticeably above the median, suggesting that the market has already priced in some improvement. P/B is only slightly below the industry level, so from a book-value perspective the stock does not look clearly cheap. Dividend yield has declined compared with last year, reducing the stock’s appeal for income investors. EPS and forward EPS trends remain positive, but against the backdrop of weak margins and a high P/E this is not yet a strong argument for a significant upward re-rating. Overall, ADM’s fundamentals support a moderately cautious view: the balance sheet and liquidity are good, but earnings quality and profitability are below the industry, so a small conservative downward adjustment is appropriate.

Volatility Reappears on Wall Street
This year, volatility has appeared on Wall Street since the first trading day of September. Market participants are worried about three immediate concerns.
First, the U.S.-Iran war escalated from Aug 30, for the first time since late July. As a result, crude oil prices spiked. The price of the U.S. benchmark — the West Texas Intermediate crude oil future — crossed $91 per barrel and the price of the global benchmark — the Brent crude oil future — crossed $95 per barrel.
Second, on Aug 28, in his remarks at the Fed's annual symposium of economic policies in Jackson Hole, WY, Chairman Kevin Warsh warned about the sticky inflation rate. Higher crude oil prices will worsen the inflationary situation, forcing the Fed to hike the Fed fund rate anytime soon.
Third, the yield on the benchmark 10-Year U.S. Treasury Note reached its highest level since November 2023. Japan's benchmark 10-Year Treasury Note yield touched 3% for the first time since 1996. The yield on U.K. 10-year government Gilt reached the highest level since June 2008. Yields on German and France Government bonds also moved higher.

Virtu Financial Inc.
Virtu Financial is benefiting from an active trading backdrop that continues to support opportunity capture across equities, options, and other asset classes. VIRT is scaling its capital base and reinforcing returns by investing in technology and talent, which has supported higher daily adjusted net trading income through the cycle.

Archer Daniels Midland Company’s ADM Flavors business is emerging as an important growth driver for its Human Nutrition segment. The company’s Human Nutrition business delivered strong improvement in second-quarter 2026, with operating profit increasing 51% year over year to $139 million, primarily driven by immense strength in Flavors. Growth, Margin Expansion and Deleveraging Support Outlook
Scotts Miracle-Gro continues to benefit from its U.S. Consumer franchise, supply chain savings and a mix shift toward higher-margin branded products. In the first nine months of fiscal 2026, U.S. Consumer sales rose 2.1%, segment profit increased 6.1% and adjusted gross margin improved 110 basis points (bps) to 35.8%. Management raised fiscal 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $4.30-$4.45 and kept expectations for low-single-digit U.S. Consumer sales growth, at least a 32% adjusted gross margin and mid-single-digit adjusted EBITDA growth. Its longer-term framework still targets roughly $1 billion of incremental sales and $1 billion of EBITDA around 2030 through innovation, pricing, e-commerce and disciplined tuck-in acquisitions.
The company’s portfolio holds leading positions across fertilizers, grass seed, spreaders, mulch, soils, plant food and rodent control within an addressable do-it-yourself (DIY) market of about $12 billion. Branded point-of-sale (POS) for the first nine months of fiscal 2026 rose 1.4% in dollars and 2.3% in units, while e-commerce POS advanced 27% and 33%, respectively. New products across lawns, organics, indoor gardening and controls, together with targeted younger-consumer marketing, support broader category penetration over time.
Scotts Miracle-Gro’s leverage ratio was 3.78 at the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2026, down from 4.15 a year earlier, as year-to-date adjusted EBITDA increased by $31 million and free cash flow continued to be directed toward debt reduction. Third-quarter interest expense fell to $28 million as average borrowings and borrowing rates declined. Management maintained fiscal 2026 free cash flow guidance of $275 million and a year-end leverage target in the high 3s, supporting further balance sheet improvement.
SMG Balances Liquidity and Capital Returns
Scotts Miracle-Gro’s liquidity remained adequate, supported by $195.2 million of cash generated from operations in the first nine months of fiscal 2026, broadly in line with $197.2 million a year earlier. Cash and cash equivalents were $27.7 million on June 27, 2026, while total debt was approximately $2.11 billion. The company continued to return capital to shareholders, paying $116.3 million in dividends during the first nine months. Although SMG maintains a $500 million share repurchase authorization, it did not buy back shares under the program during the period.
Cost Headwinds and Seasonal Demand Challenge SMG’s Growth
Higher transportation costs remained a drag in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, when adjusted gross margin declined 100 bps to 31.3%. Supply chain savings produced favorable material costs, but those benefits were net of higher commodity costs. Property, plant and equipment spending rose 16% to $63.1 million in the first nine months of fiscal 2026 as automation, enterprise resource planning (ERP) modernization and distribution investments continue. These outlays can limit cash flexibility even as management targets at least a 32% adjusted gross margin for fiscal 2026.
U.S. Consumer sales rose 0.3% in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, while segment profit declined 2.3% as gross margin fell. Branded Lawns POS was down 1% in both dollars and units year to date, with unfavorable May weather offsetting e-commerce growth and pricing. Earnings therefore remain exposed to seasonal demand as growth initiatives are executed.
The Hawthorne operating divestiture is complete, but the transaction still carries financial volatility. Scotts Miracle-Gro recorded a $101.8 million loss on the North American sale in the first nine months of fiscal 2026 and a $15.7 million unrealized loss on Vireo equity securities in the third quarter. Non-cash consideration therefore leaves residual exposure to Vireo’s valuation.

There seems to be no end in sight as far as the tensions between Iran and the United States are concerned.
