Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) was part of the boom in businesses that went public via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in 2021. But unlike many of those names, the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft company has made investors money -- staging an epic recovery after a multiyear downswing. Joby is up a staggering 219.2% in the last year, at the time of this writing.
Investors who are interested in Joby Aviation may also want to consider Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL), as well as an exchange-traded fund (ETF) -- the Ark Space Exploration & Innovation ETF (NYSEMKT: ARKX). Here's why these two growth stocks and ETF could be worth a closer look now.

Things have heated up this summer for Joby Aviation
Scott Levine (Joby Aviation): While Joby Aviation is still waiting for the final certifications from the FAA to start ferrying passengers back and forth with its electric air taxi service, it doesn't mean the company is sitting idle. Over the past couple of months, Joby has reported some notable news indicating that the company is working hard to hit the ground running when it receives the requisite FAA certification, making it an eVTOL stock that demands to be on the radar of any investor interested in gaining exposure to the nascent industry.
Most recently, Joby notched an aviation industry first when it completed an eVTOL flight between two U.S. public airports: Marina and Monterey, both of which are in California. Management lauded the accomplishment "a major step as part of Joby's commercial market readiness, highlighting key capabilities across safety, operations, air traffic control, and certification progress."
But there are even bigger developments that the upstart eVTOL company reported this summer. For one, Joby announced its plan to acquire the urban air mobility business of Blade Air Mobility. When the transaction closes (presumably in the next few weeks), Joby will gain immediate market access to infrastructure assets, as well as urban corridors in New York City and Southern Europe.
Diversifying beyond the civilian market, Joby announced a partnership with L3Harris to collaborate on developing hybrid eVTOL aircraft suited for defense applications. Should the partnership with L3Harris, a leading defense contractor, bring a defense aircraft to fruition, it will help Joby diversify its revenue base and mitigate the risk associated with the company's air taxi business.
For investors looking to land an eVTOL stock in their portfolios, Joby is a consideration they can't afford to ignore.
An interesting eVTOL stock you probably haven't heard of
Lee Samaha (Vertical Aerospace): As you can see in the chart, the British eVTOL company's market cap is a mere fraction of its U.S. peers' market cap.
Part of it comes down to Vertical Aerospace's short financial runway. According to CEO Stuart Simpson, "Our cash runway takes us into the middle of 2026 with our cash and cash equivalents as of today, approximately $139 million."
Another part of it is possibly the different regulatory path followed by Vertical Aerospace. The company is seeking certification for its aircraft with the U.K.'s Civil Aviation Authority and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. After this, it will work on certification with the FAA and other regulators worldwide.
However, the good news is that the current capital position will enable the company to "begin the assembly of our next aircraft, our pre-production or certification aircraft, and continue to expand our certification aircraft supply chain." Vertical recently completed the first public-to-airport eVTOL flight by a commercially planned vehicle. It also has 1,500 preorders in place for its aircraft, including from American Airlines and Japan Airlines.
Vertical Aerospace will require capital to complete its aims, and there are no guarantees it will. Still, it offers an interesting option for investors looking to diversify eVTOL holdings, and potentially more upside due to its low valuation.
Shoot for the stars with this high-octane ETF
Daniel Foelber (Ark Space Exploration & Innovation ETF): The Ark Space Exploration & Innovation ETF has been on a tear -- up 36.2% year to date and 78% over the last year. According to Ark Invest's overview of the ETF: "The advisor defines 'Space Exploration' as leading, enabling, or benefiting from technologically enabled products and/or services that occur beyond the surface of the Earth, including autonomous mobility, intelligent devices, advanced battery technologies, 3D printing, reusable rockets, adaptive robotics, and neural networks."
The fund addresses the space theme across industries -- through growth-focused companies as well as legacy industrial companies like L3Harris, Deere, and Komatsu. And like other Ark funds, the ETF is not remotely market-cap-weighted -- meaning that the highest-weighted holdings will be the fund managers' top picks rather than the most valuable companies. The fund's largest holding -- Kratos Defense & Security -- only has a market cap of $11.5 billion compared to $420.3 billion for fifth-place Palantir Technologies.
Vertical take-off and landing plays into the "space theme," with Archer Aviation, Joby Aviation, and Blade Air Mobility combining for 11.2% of the ETF. The ETF has many recognizable names, but also some companies you may have never heard of -- like unmanned aircraft system maker Aerovironment and satellite giant Iridium Communications -- the third- and fourth-largest holdings by weighting. Again, since the fund isn't market-cap weighted, it can put more conviction in these companies and still have small pieces of megacap growth companies. The fund holds Nvidia and Alphabet, but they only make up 2.7% and 1.7% of the fund, respectively.
The Ark Space Exploration & Innovation ETF sports a relatively high expense ratio at 0.75% -- which is far higher than the expense ratios investors may be used to from passive funds. The key difference is that the Ark Space Exploration & Innovation ETF is actively managed and very nuanced. The higher expense ratio is the fee for the active management, but it has certainly been worth it, given the fund's epic gains.
All told, the Ark Space Exploration & Innovation ETF could be a good pick for investors who are interested in "space" outside just eVTOL.

That rally was driven by the market's enthusiasm for the nascent eVTOL market, but the company hasn't actually generated any revenue yet and continues to rack up steep losses.

What does Archer Aviation do?
Archer's Midnight eVTOL aircraft can carry a single pilot and four passengers. It travels up to 100 miles on a single charge with a maximum speed of 150 miles per hour. Its drone-like design makes it easier to land in crowded urban areas than traditional helicopters.
Many companies, including United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL), Future Flight Global, Soracle -- a joint venture between Japan Airlines (OTC: JAPSY) and Sumitomo (OTC: SSUM.F) -- Ethiopian Airlines, and Abu Dhabi Aviation, plan to use the Midnight for their air taxi services.
Archer also plans to launch its own air taxi service within the next two years, and it will be the official air taxi services provider for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
One of Archer's biggest investors is the automaker Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which hired it as the contract manufacturer for its own eVTOL aircraft. Archer also holds a contract with the U.S. Air Force. It delivered its first aircraft to the Air Force for testing purposes last year, and it expects to deliver five more under that contract over the next few years.
When will Archer start to generate revenue?
Before Archer went public by merging with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in 2021, it claimed it would deliver its first 10 eVTOLs and generate $42 million in revenue in 2024. But it didn't generate any revenue last year as it racked up a net loss of $652 million.
That big miss was disappointing, but Archer expects to ramp up its production to 10 aircraft in 2025, 48 aircraft in 2026, 252 in 2027, and 650 in 2028. With a backlog of about $6 billion, there's plenty of pent-up demand.
Archer's manufacturing partnership with Stellantis, its new AI partnership with Palantir to optimize its manufacturing and aviation systems, and fresh rounds of funding could help it achieve those ambitious goals. But it has also more than doubled its number of outstanding shares since its public debut, and that dilution will likely continue as it subsidizes its salaries with big stock bonuses and issues more shares to fund its acquisitions.
How much bigger could Archer grow?
For 2025, analysts expect Archer to generate just $1.4 million in revenue as it delivers its first Midnight aircraft in Abu Dhabi. Assuming it ramps up its production and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) finally approves its first commercial flights in the U.S. this year, analysts expect its revenue to surge to $103.4 million in 2026 and $450.8 million in 2027.
From 2024 to 2030, MarketsandMarkets estimates the eVTOL industry will have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.3%. From 2031 to 2035, it expects a CAGR of 27.6%. If Archer can scale up its business, match analysts' revenue expectations, and continue to grow its top line at a CAGR of 30% from 2027 to 2035, its annual revenue could hit $3.7 billion by that final year. It could also finally turn profitable as economies of scale kick in.
If the company achieves that explosive growth and trades at a reasonable 10 times sales by 2035, its market cap could rise nearly sixfold to $37 billion. It could grow even faster if it acquires its closest competitor, Joby Aviation, and its other smaller industry peers.
Is Archer the smartest investment you can make today?
Archer is still a speculative stock, but it could have a bright future. That might be why its insiders bought nearly seven times as many shares as they sold over the past 12 months. It's still risky, and I probably wouldn't call it the smartest investment you can make today, but it could be a good long-term play for daring growth investors.

The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights Archer Aviation, United Airlines, Stellantis and Palantir Technologies

U.S. stock futures edged higher this morning after an impressive last week. Despite uncertainties about the impact of the Trump administration’s tariff and trade policies, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite posted all-time highs for both closing and intraday basis on Friday. The S&P 500 was also very near to posting another record high. The Dow too, advanced last week.
This week major focus will be on two key inflation data. The consumer price index (CPI), which is commonly known as household inflation and the producer price index (PPI) will be released on Tuesday and Thursday morning, respectively. Soft reading of these two key inflation data likely to boost investors’ sentiment for the first interest rate cut by the Fed in September.
Expectations of a rate cut have gathered steam following unexpectedly weak jobs additions in July as well as significantly downwardly revised jobs data for both June and May. The Fed will conduct its important Jackson Hole Symposium for Economic Policies during Aug 21-23. The release of CPI and PPI data ahead of the symposium will be important to set the tone for the September FOMC meeting.
In addition, retail sales data, industrial production data and the Michigan U.S. consumer sentiment index, to be released on Friday, will be monitored by the central bank.
Strong Q2 Earnings: MNDY, FNV, B, LEGN
The cloud-based internet-software developer monday.com Ltd. MNDY came up with quarterly adjusted earnings of $1.09 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.84 per share. This compares to earnings of $0.94 per share a year ago. The company posted revenues of $299.01 million, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2%.
Leading gold miner Franco-Nevada Corp. FNV reported second-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share of $1.24, up 65% year over year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was $1.10 per share. The company recorded quarterly total revenues of $369.4 million, up 42% year over year.
Leading gold miner Barrick Mining Corp. B reported second-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share of $0.47, up 47% year over year and in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company recorded quarterly total revenues of $3.681 billion, up 16% year over year.
Mid-cap clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company Legend Biotech Corp. LEGN came up with a quarterly adjusted loss of $0.34 per share, wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss per share of $0.22. The company posted revenues of $255.06 million, outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $226.26 million.
Events After Today’s Closing Bell
No major economic data will be released after today’s market close. On the earnings front, specialist chemical producer Celanese Corp. CE, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft manufacturer Archer Aviation Inc. ACHR and clean power technology and nuclear fuel recycling company Oklo Inc. OKLO will release their quarterly financial numbers.

The idea of hailing a flying car has always belonged to science fiction. But thanks to Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY), the idea of catching a flying taxi is slowly edging into reality.
The company's electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are designed to carry passengers over congested cities at speeds upwards of 200 mph. And they are quieter than a helicopter and have zero emissions. This vision isn't theoretical. Joby has already demonstrated eVTOLs in New York and Dubai and is moving through the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) certification process as I write.

With major strategic partners, a strong cash position, and an aggressive market expansion plan, Joby could be one of the first to make commercial flying taxis a real business. The question for investors is whether this growth stock is ready for takeoff today, or might it be wiser to wait until the company has a little more grounding?
From blueprints to boarding passes
Joby is trying to solve a problem that most city drivers face everyday: traffic. And not just any traffic. Horribly congested traffic, the kind that makes you wish you were anywhere (even at the DMV, with slow internet) but stuck in it.
To get there, however, Joby needs a few things to work in its favor. The first is full FAA-type certification, the regulatory green light that will let it fly passengers in its eVTOLS. The second is the infrastructure to make its vision practical, that is, a network of vertiports, charging stations, and terminals in the right locations so customers can board, fly, and land without the experience feeling like more hassle than just staying in the car.
So far, the company has checked off some big early boxes. It already holds FAA Part 135 certification, which means it's cleared to operate as an air carrier with approved aircraft. It's also moving to lock down prime real estate for takeoff and landing, from Manhattan heliports to Dubai's planned aerial taxi hubs.
But that doesn't mean the company is smooth flying -- yet. Its biggest "unknown" is time. Every month that slips by without full FAA certification pushes profitability that much further into the future. Add in the fact that it's burning cash each quarter, and you start to see why patience -- and a deep cash cushion -- are non-negotiable.
Big names, big bets
Speaking of cash, where is Joby getting money for research and development?
Well, here's where the story gets interesting.
Although Joby is pre-revenue, it has an impressive ecosystem of backers and partners. Back in 2022, Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) invested about $60 million in Joby, with the expectation that Joby would eventually create a premium service for Delta customers. More recently, Toyota (NYSE: TM) committed $894 million to helping Joby with certification and commercial production of its electric air taxis. In perhaps its boldest move, Joby plans to acquire Blade Air Mobility (NASDAQ: BLDE), which would help it gain access to central terminals in New York, Southern California, and Europe.
Meanwhile, international expansion is already underway. In Dubai, Joby signed an exclusive six-year agreement with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to launch aerial tax services there in 2026. Finally, Joby recently announced that it's partnering with L3Harris to develop hybrid eVTOLs for defense applications, with demonstrations planned in 2026.
Things seem to be rolling. But before we get too bullish, let's look at its finances.
The numbers under the hood
Here's where reality checks in.
Over the last 12 months, Joby generated just $110,000 in revenue, essentially none, while recording a net loss of about $596 million. Just in the first quarter of 2025, it posted a loss of $82 million, or $0.11 per share, driven largely by spending in research and development. To add fuel to the fire, cash burn was $111 million for the quarter.
The balance sheet, however, is a strength, largely because of partners. Joby holds about $813 million in cash and short-term investments. That net cash position gives the company some runway to fund operations without immediate dilution.
Still, with a market cap near $17 billion, the stock is priced well ahead of fundamentals. It's price-per-book (P/B) ratio -- which measures how richly the market values the company relative to the net assets on its balance sheet -- sits around 20. That's steep compared with the S&P 500's median of about 3. Even Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR), Joby's primary competitor, is trading at roughly 5.6 times book value. That doesn't mean Joby can't grow into its valuation, but it does underscore how much future success is baked into today's price.
Verdict: Should you hitch a ride?
When people talk about Joby's risks, they usually circle the big ones: FAA certification, steady cash burn, competition. But there's a second layer of risks -- call them structural -- that could make investing in Joby choppy in the short term.
Start with the skies themselves. Urban airspace is already a juggling act, and air traffic control in cities like New York and LA runs hot most days. If regulators decide to keep eVTOL traffic on a tight leash, Joby's flight schedule could end up thinner than its business plan assumes.
On the ground, vertiports have to be built, and convincing neighborhoods to welcome them is another story entirely. Costs could also be a problem: insurance, pilot pay, and battery charging might keep fares higher than commuters are willing to swallow.
Still, if you believe Joby can navigate these headwinds and execute on time, the payoff could be big. For long-term investors who can tolerate volatility, this is a speculatve bet on a market that doesn't exist yet but could make ground transportation look radically different ten years from now.

Archer Aviation thus has the chance to capitalize on this impressive growth as it strives for notable success in the worldwide eVTOL market.
Archer Aviation is well-positioned for rapid development through collaborations with United Airlines Holdings, Inc. UAL to build an air taxi network and with Stellantis N.V. STLA to expand manufacturing capacity.
The company is launching its first air taxi service in Abu Dhabi. If successful, this could pave the way for similar services in other countries, primarily in the United States, and help secure final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”).
Archer Aviation’s partnership with defense startup Anduril is also noteworthy. Together, they are working to develop hybrid eVTOL aircraft for military applications. These partnerships are expected to support Archer Aviation’s growth, especially as global tensions might lead to increased defense spending, benefiting the company’s efforts to explore defense markets.
Should You Buy, Hold, or Sell Archer Aviation Stock Now?
With ongoing partnerships and the Abu Dhabi project expected to progress smoothly, along with likely FAA approvals, shareholders may feel motivated to retain their shares.
However, new investors should remain cautious, especially before the upcoming earnings report scheduled for Aug. 11, after market close. Archer Aviation is projected to report a loss of 19 cents per share, with recent revenue generation being minimal.

Historically, Archer Aviation’s stock performance has been more influenced by positive news than by financial results. If management doesn’t provide optimistic updates—such as plans to produce two aircraft per month by the end of 2025 or progress on Midnight’s test flights in Abu Dhabi—investors might expect a decline in share prices.

Is Archer Aviation Stock a Buy, Hold, or Sell Before Q2 Earnings?

Undoubtedly, Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) investors are keenly focused on insights into whether the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) company is close to receiving the requisite Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications.
But that's not to say that there aren't other news items that can lift investors' spirits. Joby just announced, for example, a new collaboration with aerospace and defense specialist L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) that both Joby investors and Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) investors will want to know all about.

The deal that you can't afford to let fly under your radar
New dance partners Joby Aviation and L3Harris announced that they're collaborating on the development of hybrid eVTOL aircraft designed for defense applications. Suited for low-altitude operations, the aircraft will have optionality in whether they're piloted or flown autonomously. With test flights expected to start in the coming months, both companies are targeting demonstrations of the aircraft for the government in 2026.
Referencing the company's market opportunity for defense applications and lauding the partnership, JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO, Joby Aviation, stated:
We have worked closely with the Department of Defense over the past decade to give them a front-row seat to the development of our dual-purpose technologies, and we're now ready to demonstrate and deploy it.
Joby's experience in exploring defense solutions transcends the recently announced partnership with L3Harris. In 2020, Joby worked with the United States Air Force, leading up to it receiving airworthiness approval from the military branch -- a first for an eVTOL company. The ability to fly on-base and access government testing facilities has assisted Joby with the development of its aircraft as it strives to launch commercial operations.
Archer also aims to develop a defense solution
Joby certainly isn't the only one with its sights set on expanding the scope of its operations beyond civilian air tax service, Archer Aviation is another leader among eVTOL aircraft developers that's focused on defense applications. Like Joby, Archer has worked for the past several years with the Department of Defense (DoD) to explore development of its aircraft for defense operations.
Following the start of its collaboration in 2021, Archer inked a new contract -- worth up to $142 million -- with the U.S. Air Force to "assess the transformational potential of the vertical flight market and eVTOL technologies for DoD purposes" in 2023. Archer claims that its eVTOL Midnight aircraft provide a better safety profile than helicopters, in addition to representing a more cost-effective option.
In addition to the work with the DoD, Archer further demonstrated its interest in the defense sector last year, when it announced a partnership with Anduril, a defense upstart that focuses on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its offerings. Similar to Joby and L3Harris, Archer and Anduril plan on developing a hybrid VTOL aircraft suitable for defense operations.
With Joby finding a new copilot in L3Harris, is now the time to buy shares?
In a neck-and-neck race to get their eVTOL aircraft to the market first, Joby and Archer are, combined, very much the face of the burgeoning eVTOL market, and while civilian electric air taxi service is oftentimes the business vertical most frequently discussed, both companies are committed to the defense industry as well.
Lest Joby investors surmise that the company has a leg up on Archer due to the new L3Harris deal, it's important to recognize Archer's partnership with Anduril, and vice versa. Those who thought that Archer is alone in its ambitions to provide defense solutions must think again.
It's also important to note that eVTOL companies signing deals with major defense contractors isn't a zero-sum game. With the U.S. defense budget possibly rising to over $1 trillion in 2026, there's no doubt that there's plenty of opportunity for both Joby and Archer to thrive in the defense market -- and that's not even taking into account the possibility of selling to NATO allies.
