Aurora Cannabis Inc. (ACB) Misses Q4 Earnings Estimates

(RTTNews) - Aurora Cannabis Inc. (ACB, ACB.TO), a Canadian medical cannabis company, reported Wednesday narrower net loss in its fourth quarter, and adjusted EBITDA surged from last year with higher revenues.
In the pre-market activity on the Nasdaq, Aurora shares were losing around 10.5 percent to trade at $5.26.
Net loss from continuing operations was $17.23 million, compared to a net loss of $20.327 million for the prior year period.
Adjusted EBITDA increased 619 percent to $16.68 million from $2.32 million a year ago. Consolidated adjusted gross margin before fair value adjustments was 62 percent, compared to 50 percent in the prior year period.
Total net revenue was $90.5 million, 34 percent higher than $67.4 million in the prior year period.
The growth was mainly due to 48 percent increase in global medical cannabis business and 32 percent growth in plant propagation business. These were slightly offset by lower quarterly revenue in consumer cannabis business.
The increase in medical cannabis net revenue was primarily due to higher sales to Australia, Germany, Poland, and the UK, as well as increased revenue in Canada to insurance covered and self-paying patients.
Aurora's consumer cannabis net revenue fell 20 percent.
Looking ahead for the first quarter, the company expects continued strong global cannabis revenue driven by improved performance in Canadian medical, comparable performance in consumer, offset by temporary declines in some of international markets.
Global cannabis are expected to be slightly lower sequentially.
The company expects positive adjusted EBITDA to continue, with a decline versus sequential fourth quarter, due to lower revenue contributions from the higher margin international markets.

Agilent Technologies (A) Q2 Earnings and Revenues Top Estimates

The year is a more than a month old, but Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQ: ACB) is already one of the hottest stocks to own in 2025. As of Feb. 11, the pot stock has soared more than 50% since the year began -- and that rally began only a few days ago.
Shares of Aurora got a big boost after the company posted its latest earnings numbers showing a strong profit. Could this be a turning point for Aurora after years of disappointment? Has the stock finally become a good buy?

Aurora's sales take off in Q3
On Feb. 5, Aurora Cannabis reported its fiscal third-quarter results for the period ended Dec. 31. The cannabis company reported impressive year-over-year growth, with sales rising by 37% to 88.2 million Canadian dollars ($61.7 million). This is an acceleration from the previous quarter, when its sales growth rate was 29%.
This is great news for a company that has struggled to generate much growth. In its home Canadian market, competition is fierce. Not only are margins extremely barrow, but it's also difficult to increase market share due to heavy restrictions on marketing and an abundance of cannabis producers.
To expand, Aurora has been focusing on selling medical marijuana products internationally, where it can sell at higher prices and produce better margins for the business. It was the international medical market that generated solid growth last quarter for Aurora, more than doubling from CA$19.2 million to CA$40.9 million. As that happened, the company's adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) also rose significantly, from CA$5.5 million a year ago to CA$23.1 million this past quarter.
The company still faces risks, however
Aurora's results were encouraging, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be smooth sailing in the future. The company's earnings numbers were strong last quarter, and Aurora posted a profit of CA$31.3 million compared with a net loss of CA$18.1 million a year earlier. However, that profit was heavily boosted by gains on its biological assets (that added CA$31.6 million to gross profit).
Earnings numbers for cannabis companies can fluctuate significantly and the company is going in the right direction. The big question is whether it can remain in the black as it continues to expand and without big one-time gains boosting the bottom line in the future.
Although the business had a good deal of growth last quarter, cannabis investors have seen this situation play out in the past, where new market opportunities lead to surging sales initially, only to slow drastically later on. As other Canadian cannabis companies see the growth Aurora is generating internationally, it may only be a matter of time before it faces more competition in those markets as well.
Aurora's business is showing some signs of progress, and it has come a long way over the years in becoming less dependent on the Canadian consumer cannabis market. However, whether investors decide to take a chance on the stock will ultimately come down to their risk tolerance.
Is Aurora Cannabis stock finally worth taking a chance on?
During the past five years, Aurora shares have plummeted 97% in value. The business does look better, and it's arguably a safer investment than it was five years ago. But that isn't saying much, given how badly it has performed during that stretch.
This is a highly volatile stock which has headed almost exclusively in the wrong direction. The danger is that although it's doing well now, it could take just one bad quarter or negative development in the cannabis industry to undo this recent rally. The shares could be a good option if you're a contrarian investor with a high risk tolerance. But for the vast majority of investors, this is still a stock that you'll likely be better off simply watching rather than buying.

With the 2024 election behind us, stock markets are rallying higher across the board. Unlike the last time Donald Trump was elected President, when markets were unsure which direction to take equities initially, the Dow is currently +1300 points, the S&P 500 +132, the Nasdaq +361 and the small-cap Russell 2000 +141 points.
Bond yields are also rising. Not only does shedding uncertainty send markets higher, but inflationary measures promised by the Trump campaign to levy tariffs on imports from all over the world will keep prices high. The 10-year yield is +4.437% right now, with the 2-year at +4.268%.
Bitcoin is also at a new all-time high of $75K, which has helped stocks like Coinbase COIN surge +12% this morning, with Bitcoin-related ETFs like Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ARKB up +6%. The Trump administration is likely to be ver favorable of a deregulated cryptocurrency market.
Tesla TSLA shares are also +12% this morning, which can be seen as a play on Elon Musk, who may have an important role in Trump’s new government. It would stand to reason that all of Musk’s businesses would do well with their CEO in a position of government power, and Tesla is currently his only publicly traded company.
Also on the ballot yesterday in a number of states was the vote on whether to legalize marijuana. While Florida, North and South Dakota all rejected the proposal, it did pass in Dallas, TX and in the state of Nebraska. Aurora Cannabis ACB also posted a +118% earnings surprise this morning, but shares are down -5% early in this otherwise roaring hot market.

Pre-Markets Surge on Historic Trump Victory

The global cannabis market stands on the cusp of a remarkable period of growth. Industry projections suggest it could grow from $57 billion in 2023 to $444 billion by 2030. This potential 7.7-fold increase over seven years translates to a compound annual growth rate of 34%, dwarfing the growth rates of many traditional industries.
Against this backdrop of industrywide potential, Canadian marijuana titan Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQ: ACB) has emerged as an unexpected bright spot in 2024. While most of its Canadian counterparts have wilted this year, Aurora's shares have blossomed with a 13% gain year to date. This performance starkly contrasts with industry peers Canopy Growth Corp. and Tilray Brands, which have seen their stocks wither by 18.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
Aurora's resilience in a challenging market for marijuana stocks raises an intriguing question for speculative growth investors: Is Aurora Cannabis stock still ripe for the picking after its strong performance over the first three quarters of 2024? Let's dig deeper to unearth the answer.
Medical cannabis: A high-margin focus
Aurora Cannabis has carved out its niche primarily in the medical cannabis market. This strategic focus appears to be bearing fruit. In the first quarter of FY 2025, Aurora reported record global medical cannabis net revenue of $47.2 million Canadian dollars, marking a 13% increase from the same period a year ago.
The medical cannabis segment offers higher margins, compared to its recreational counterpart. To wit, Aurora's adjusted gross margins for medical cannabis have consistently hit or exceeded the company's 60% target in recent quarters, reaching a healthy 69% in Q1. This emphasis on high-margin medical sales could be a sturdy foundation for Aurora's future growth and profitability.
Financial health improving
Aurora Cannabis has made significant strides in improving its financial position. The company achieved positive free cash flow of CA$6.5 million in Q1 FY 2025, a milestone Wall Street wasn't expecting until at least calendar year 2026. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the company's history of cash burn and shareholder dilution.
Aurora has also worked to strengthen its balance sheet. As of the close of Q1 FY 2025, Aurora had approximately CA$182 million in cash and cash equivalents. This cash position provides the company with financial flexibility as it navigates the evolving cannabis market.
Global expansion and market potential
Aurora Cannabis has established a presence in key international markets, including Germany, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Germany recently became the largest European Union (E.U.) country to legalize cannabis for recreational use. However, the initial phase of this legalization focuses on personal possession and cultivation, along with non-profit "cannabis clubs" for distribution, rather than commercial sales.
This structure limits immediate opportunities for large-scale commercial operators like Aurora. Despite these current restrictions in Germany, Aurora's strong position in the country's medical cannabis market may offer significant advantages as regulations evolve. This international footprint could prove valuable as the global cannabis market continues to develop and grow.
Challenges remain
Aurora Cannabis still faces significant challenges despite these positive developments. The company operates in a highly regulated industry with ongoing legal uncertainties in multiple key geographies. Competition from both legal and illicit sources remains fierce. The Canadian market continues to be burdened by high excise taxes and costly regulations.
Perhaps most importantly for stock investors, Aurora has a history of diluting shareholders to raise capital. The company has more than doubled its outstanding share count in the past three years. The recent positive free-cash-flow news is encouraging, but investors should be aware of the potential for future dilution.
Time to buy?
Aurora Cannabis has been making some impressive moves lately. Its turnaround strategy is starting to pay off, with a smart focus on high-margin medical cannabis and a push for better efficiency. The company has even managed to achieve positive free cash flow -- no small feat in this industry. Plus, their strong international presence and the bright outlook for global cannabis growth are points in the marijuana titan's favor.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. The cannabis industry is still in its nascent stages, with regulations that can change at the drop of a hat. While Aurora's stock has seen some nice gains in 2024, it's worth remembering that it's taken quite a beating over the last several years (see graph below). Aurora Cannabis Inc. ACB has announced a research grant for the University of British Columbia (“UBC”) by Genome British Columbia (Genome BC), a not-for-profit organization supporting world-class genomics research and innovation in British Columbia. The collaborative project, titled “Genomics-enabled Aroma Breeding in Cannabis”, will directly support Aurora's genetics work and focus on validating genetic and chemical markers for fruity aroma in cannabis.

After the announcement, ACB shares fell 0.6% yesterday, closing at $5.37. Meanwhile, the latest collaboration with UBC underscores Aurora's dedication to innovation and scientific advancement in the cannabis sector. The genetics research aligns with its breeding goals and is set to enhance its breeding program with greater accuracy and efficiency on consumer-focused traits, driving future innovations. As a result, we anticipate that this development will positively boost market sentiment toward the stock.
The Canadian medical cannabis provider currently has a market capitalization of $297.2 million. In the last reported quarter, the company topped the Zacks Consensus Estimates for revenues and earnings by 20.2% and 68.6%, respectively. It delivered an earnings beat of 32.4%, on average, in the trailing four quarters.
More on Aurora Cannabis’ New Project
Aroma is a distinct characteristic of cannabis and an important aspect of consumer inclination. With this research, Aurora will advance beyond sensory analysis into validated aroma markers. Recently, the company patented a series of genetic and chemical markers for fruity aroma, identified through its CanD diversity panel. This collaboration will allow Aurora to validate these markers using cutting-edge approaches that would typically require significant funding. The insights gained from this work will support the discovery and launch of cultivars with unique and improved aromas, alongside high yield and potency.

Aurora's in-kind contributions to the project include conducting sensory analysis of fruity aromas and leading bioinformatic analyses with in-house software. UBC, through Genome BC funding, will focus on sequencing transcriptomes, analyzing the volatile chemistry and conducting functional characterization of the genes responsible for fruity aromas in cannabis. If successful, the methods developed in this project will be adapted to explore other aromas and could strengthen Aurora's aroma-related intellectual property portfolio.
Industry Prospects Favoring ACB
A report from Grand View Research valued the global cannabis cultivation market at $392.1 billion in 2022 and is expected to witness a compound annual rate of 21.3% through 2030. Growing legalization and the adoption of cannabis for the treatment of chronic diseases are the key factors driving the growth. Several countries are easing the laws related to cannabis cultivation, especially for hemp cultivation, due to low THC content, which is increasing its adoption.

Earlier this month, ACB advanced research in auto-flowering technology — a genetic characteristic that automatically transitions the plant from the vegetative stage to the flowering stage rather than relying on changes in light cycles. The innovative work offers foundational insight into the flowering mechanism in cannabis, supporting future breeding strategies and potentially transforming outdoor cannabis cultivation in high-latitude regions, such as Canada.
