Markets lost a bit of steam mid-session this Monday, but a late surge into the close brought the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq indexes to new record closing highs. The Dow dipped slightly: -64 points, -0.14%, while the S&P 500 grew a mere 1 point, +0.02%, and the Nasdaq came up +70 points, +0.33%. The small-cap Russell 2000 also finished the day slightly in the red: -4 points, -0.19%.
From April 9th lows — the day President Trump put a pause on his draconian tariff policy with nearly all U.S. trading partners — we see sizable gains across the board: the Dow +16%, the Russell 2000 +21%, the S&P 500 +23% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq, carrying the lion’s share of the AI trade which has led markets all year, is up close to +30% over these 16 some-odd weeks.
Earnings Reports After Today’s Close
Electronic design automation software company Cadence Design Systems CDNS is up big after an impressive showing in its Q2 report released after the closing bell. Earnings of $1.65 per share improved over the $1.57 in the Zacks consensus, which itself depicted growth of more than +22% year over year. Revenues of $1.28 billion neatly overtook estimates of $1.26 billion — also up big year over year. Guidance for full-year 2025 is the icing on the cake. Shares are up +7.5% in late trading at this hour.
Household durable goods manufacturer Whirlpool WHR, on the other hand, missed expectations on its bottom line by two solid dimes to $1.34 per share, while meeting the $3.77 billion in the Zacks consensus exactly on the top line. North America orders outperformed expectations, but still came in -4.6% year over year. Full-year guidance for earnings is well off what analysts had previous thought, and have come down on the top line too. Shares have fallen -12.5% in the after market.
What to Expect from the Stock Market on Tuesday
Tomorrow will be a big day for both earnings releases and economic reports. A new U.S. Trade Balance joins Retail/Wholesale Inventories for June, Case-Shiller Home Prices for May, Consumer Confidence for July and a new JOLTS (Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey) report, also for June.
Of these, the JOLTS report marks the first metric hitting the tape for “Jobs Week,” albeit a month in arrears from jobs data coming out later in the week. Expectations are for 7.5 million job openings last month, down from the 7.74 million reported a month ago — the highest month of the year, bouncing off March near-term lows of 7.2 million. Accommodation and Food Services, particularly in the South, had by far the most amount of job openings in last month’s report.
Q2 earnings also revs up Tuesday morning, when we hear from Boeing BA, Procter & Gamble PG, Merck MRK, UnitedHealth UNH, PayPal PYPL and UPS UPS, all in the morning. After tomorrow’s close, we’ll get results from Starbucks SBUX and Visa V.
Finally, the first day of the two-day Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings commence. On Wednesday, the Fed will decide on new interest rate policy, but there is a more than +95% chance that no move is made on the 4.25-4.50% Fed funds rate we’ve seen since December of last year. Expect to hear from President Trump on this matter, however.

Again, we’re starting slow in this busy week, but Q2 earnings season sets up to bring us four of the “Magnificent 7” stock earnings reports between now and Thursday afternoon: Microsoft MSFT and Meta Platforms META on Wednesday after the bell and Apple AAPL and Amazon AMZN a day later. We’ll see Cadence Design Systems CDNS and Whirlpool WHR report after today’s closing bell.
This week also brings us important mainstays on the earnings front such as Procter & Gamble PG, Starbucks SBUX and Visa V tomorrow, Ford F and Qualcomm QCOM Wednesday and ExxonMobil XOM Friday morning. In all, 164 companies of the S&P 500 will have posted earnings results by Friday, August 1st.
Fed Unlikely to Lower Rates on Wednesday
Despite President Trump’s long and very visible campaign to change Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s mind about the ongoing Fed funds rate — it’s been at +4.25-4.50% since December of last year, meaning for the entirely of Trump’s second term so far — due to a relative equilibrium having been reached in the Fed’s dual mandate. An Unemployment Rate of +4.1% and an Inflation Rate at +2.7% (up from +2.3% reached a couple months ago) demonstrate current rates are having their desired effect.
That said, Fed Governors Chris Waller and Miki Bowman are likely to file the first dissents in some time from the ongoing narrative about interest rates at the conclusion of the upcoming FOMC meeting Wednesday afternoon. There’s only a 2% chance the Fed has enough votes to cut to outstrip Powell’s opinion to keep interest rates where they are. After an August break, September’s odds go up to +67% for a 25 basis-point (bps) cut.
This is expected to once again raise Trump’s hackles, although perhaps his early-week successes — a trade deal with the EU and ongoing negotiations with China in Stockholm, Sweden — will soothe the president somewhat. Any big, unexpected changes to PCE or the labor market this week — say a sub-100K read on monthly employment, a negative Q2 GDP or a near-+3% year over year PCE — will happen too late for the Fed to pivot on its final decision on rates this summer.
Labor Market Solid… but Weakening?
We don’t see it in continually shrinking Initial Jobless Claims per week (back down to 217K last Thursday), but this week’s jobs figures ought to help answer several questions raised in last week’s Jobs Week reports: ADP private sector payrolls posted a negative -33K jobs filled in June, the first negative print in more than two years.
And, while that Friday’s subsequent BLS report came in at +147K, more than half of those new jobs came from State & Local Government. What that means is that only around 70K new jobs were filled in June outside government hires; 70K isn’t enough to cover the monthly deluge of retiring Baby Boomers and older GenX. So another leg down here — as well as a Continuing Jobless Claims tally closing in on 2 million per week — would change the narrative of the U.S. having a strong labor market, thereby reviving the idea that the Fed needs to cut rates.

Whirlpool (WHR) Stock Drops Despite Market Gains: Important Facts to Note

Shares in household appliances company Whirlpool (NYSE: WHR) declined by more than 5.5% by 3 p.m. ET today. Outside a rise in market interest rates (the 10-year Treasury rate is now up to almost 4.5%, putting pressure on interest rate-sensitive stocks like Whirlpool), there's no stock-specific reason for the decline.
Whirlpool's challenging 2025
Investors in Whirlpool can expect more volatility leading up to its second-quarter earnings report on July 29. While the stock has had an impressive run-up over the last three months (up 26%), it still faces significant near-term headwinds. Not only are interest rates stubbornly high and negatively impacting the housing market and therefore, demand for higher-margin discretionary purchases of household appliances, but the tariff conflict and the fear of further tariffs have likely caused Asian competitors to push products into the U.S. market.

It all creates an uncertain near-term trading environment in a company with a dividend that cost $384 million in cash last year, $4.8 billion in debt (with $1.85 billion maturing in 2025), and pressure on its full-year guidance for $500 million to $600 million in free cash flow in 2025.
Long-term potential
As such, don't be surprised if Whirlpool cuts its dividend this year. That said, it might turn out to be a positive for the stock, as it would help alleviate some uncertainty surrounding debt repayment. Moreover, considering the longer term, Whirlpool is highly likely to be a winner from the trade conflict, as management views the Trump administration as leveling the playing field that has been tilted against Whirlpool over time.
It's a curious mix of near-term risk and long-term opportunity, but today, the market focuses on the former.
