Makers of weight-loss drugs, the hottest segment of the pharmaceutical market just now, weren't looking so hot on the stock exchange Tuesday. A pronouncement from President Trump about the category drove their share prices down, although not to bargain-basement levels.
The company most associated with obesity treatments, Denmark-based Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO), closed the day with a nearly 4% drop in its share price. Two would-be rivals currently hard at work trying to bring such products to market, fellow European drug maker Roche Holdings (OTC: RHHBY) and U.S. company Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX), fell by nearly 3% and 2%, respectively.

Ordered by the (chief) executive
One of the current initiatives from the busy White House is an effort to drive down drug prices. That seems to be one of its top agenda items for this week; it kicked off Monday afternoon with Trump signing an executive order demanding lower drug prices from manufacturers.
A key stipulation of this mandate is that medicines in this country must be aligned with prices abroad if those prices are lower in a foreign jurisdiction. Another is that pharmaceutical companies must comply with the new rules within 30 days or face potential action from the government.
Although legal and pharmaceutical experts believe the order is somewhat vague and open-ended, it does indicate that the administration is determined to at least get the ball rolling on drug discounting.
Monday afternoon, following the signing ceremony for the order, Trump singled out weight-loss drugs for sharp criticism. Citing the example of an unnamed male associate, the president said the man paid $88 for his weight-loss drug in London, while the same medication had cost him $1,300 in New York.
Trump did not identify the drug, but the example is believable because the two massively popular GLP-1 weight-loss treatments approved specifically for obesity by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) -- Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Zepbound -- can cost patients more than $1,000 for a month's supply.
Trump's executive order on pharmaceutical prices does not explicitly address such drugs. However, with his comments and that of other administration officials, it seems obesity drug makers could be laser-targeted in the very near future.
Reuters quoted a White House official it did not identify as saying that "It would be fair to expect that GLP-1s, given that they hit both of those categories, will be a focus."
"There will be an expectation that those prices should come down, and then if they don't, that we will be looking at our various policy levers that can be used to force those prices down," the official said, apparently without providing more detail.
About to get Trumped?
The lack of detail is likely what kept the stocks of Novo Nordisk, Viking, Roche, and other weight-loss hopefuls from plummeting in a panic sale.
In politics, of course, there is often quite a large gap between what a politician promises and the measures that are ultimately enacted. The drug price executive order is vague all on its own, never mind the president's apparent zeal to go after the companies behind obesity treatments.
That being said, drug price reduction would be a crowd-pleasing win for the administration if it could effectively fill in those gaps by establishing guidelines, rules, and sanctions for non-compliance.
If this effort is successful, I could picture the obesity drug developers suffering disproportionally. That's because lower prices will be more a threat to their futures than to an established pharmaceutical with products outside the weight-loss category (Novo Nordisk or Eli Lilly).

Why Weight-Loss Developer Stocks Tumbled on Tuesday

(RTTNews) - Roche (RHHBY), the Breast International Group, Institut Jules Bordet Clinical Trials Support Unit and Frontier Science Foundation, announced statistically significant final overall survival results from the phase III APHINITY study in people with HER2-positive early-stage breast cancer. After ten years, the risk of death was reduced by 17% for people treated with Perjeta, Herceptin and chemotherapy for a year as post-surgery treatment, compared with individuals who received Herceptin, chemotherapy, and placebo. A 21% reduction in the risk of death was seen in the prespecified subgroup of people with lymph node-positive disease.
The company noted that full results will be presented as a late-breaking abstract on 15 May at the 2025 European Society for Medical Oncology Breast Cancer Congress.

Roche: APHINITY Trial Shows Significant Improvement Of Overall Survival

Prothena Corporation PRTA reported first-quarter 2025 loss per share of $1.12, much wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 92 cents. In the year-ago quarter, the company posted a loss of $1.34 per share. (Find the latest EPS estimates and surprises on Zacks Earnings Calendar.)
The bottom line improved year over year due to higher revenues and lower expenses.
Revenues totaled $2.8 million, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $21 million. PRTA recorded revenues of $0.1 million in the first quarter of 2024.
The company’s shares have lost 48.7% year to date compared with the industry’s decline of 7.4%.

PRTA’s Q1 Results in Detail
Research and development (R&D) expenses decreased 20.7% year over year to $50.8 million, primarily due to lower clinical trial expenses and lower manufacturing costs.
General and administrative expenses amounted to $17.6 million, down from $17.5 million in the year-ago quarter.
As of March 31, 2025, Prothena had $418.8 million in cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash, and no debt.

PRTA’s Pipeline Updates
Prothena is evaluating PRX012 — a wholly owned single-injection once-monthly antibody delivered subcutaneously targeting a key epitope at the N-terminus of amyloid beta (Aβ) — for treating Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). It has currently enrolled approximately 260 patients in the ASCENT clinical trials and expects to report multiple clinical readouts from the ongoing ASCENT studies beginning mid-2025.
PRTA is advancing an early-stage pipeline of programs for several potential neurological indications with Bristol Myers BMY.
BMS-986446 (formerly PRX005) is a best-in-class anti-tau, MTBR-specific antibody for the potential treatment of AD.
Bristol Myers continues to enroll approximately 475 patients with early AD in the ongoing phase II study on BMS-986446. The study is expected to be completed in 2027.
The company is responsible for all the development, manufacturing and commercialization of BMS-986446.
PRX019, a potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases with an undisclosed target, is also being developed in collaboration with BMY, which obtained the exclusive global license for the candidate in 2024.
PRTA has initiated a phase I first-in-human clinical trial on PRX019 to evaluate the safety, tolerability, immunogenicity, and pharmacokinetics of single ascending and multiple doses in healthy adults. The phase I study is expected to be completed in 2026.
Prothena is also developing a dual Aβ-Tau vaccine, PRX123, which is a potential preventive and therapeutic treatment for AD. It is a dual-target vaccine targeting key epitopes within the N-terminus of Aβ and MTBR-tau, designed to promote amyloid clearance and block the transmission of pathogenic tau. The FDA has cleared an Investigational New Drug Application for PRX123.
The regulatory body granted Fast Track designation to PRX123 for the treatment of AD. Prothena expects to update plans for the phase I study by year-end 2025.
The company is also evaluating prasinezumab, in collaboration with Roche RHHBY, for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Roche had earlier reported that data from the Phase IIb PADOVA study in patients with early-stage Parkinson’s disease showed that it missed the primary endpoint, but demonstrated a numerical delay in motor progression and positive trends on multiple secondary and exploratory endpoints, suggesting a possible clinical benefit.
The totality of the data presented in two oral presentations at AD/PD 2025 suggests a possible benefit in early-stage Parkinson’s disease, including consistent positive trends across primary, secondary, and exploratory clinical endpoints. A possible biological effect of prasinezumab on MRI biomarkers was also observed.
Roche will continue to evaluate data from PADOVA. It will also collaborate with health authorities to determine the next steps by mid-year 2025.
Roche is currently conducting the Open Label Extensions (OLEs) of the phase II PASADENA and phase IIb PADOVA clinical studies.
Prothena is also evaluating birtamimab, a wholly-owned potential treatment for AL amyloidosis. It reached a Special Protocol Assessment agreement with the FDA and initiated a confirmatory phase III AFFIRM-AL study of birtamimab in Mayo Stage IV patients with AL amyloidosis. Top-line results from the study are expected in the second quarter of 2025.
Novo Nordisk NVO had earlier acquired Prothena’s clinical-stage antibody, Coramitug (formerly PRX004), a potential first-in-class amyloid depleter antibody for the treatment of ATTR amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy.
NVO is conducting an ongoing phase II study in patients with ATTR cardiomyopathy. The study has completed enrollment of approximately 99 patients. Results are expected in the second half of 2025.
PRTA Reiterates 2025 Guidance
The company expects 2025 net cash burn from operating and investing activities to be in the range of $168-$175 million. It expects year-end cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash midpoint to be approximately $301 million. Net loss for 2025 is projected to be in the $197-$205 million range.

Prothena Q1 Earnings Miss Estimates, Focus on Key Readouts in 2025

For a while, it seemed as if Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) could do no wrong. Its shares skyrocketed. The company's market cap grew so much that it was within striking distance of the $1 trillion mark. Along the way, Lilly became the largest healthcare company in the world based on market cap.
However, the situation isn't so rosy for Eli Lilly now. The big pharma stock has fallen nearly 20% below its peak set last year. Some dark clouds hover on the horizon. Should you buy Lilly on the dip?

Behind Lilly's decline
There isn't just one factor behind the decline in Lilly's share price. However, the biggest issue for the drugmaker is a common one for high-flying stocks: Lilly didn't meet Wall Street estimates. Unfortunately, the company has failed to deliver the results analysts expected in two out of the last three quarters.
The worst miss was in the third quarter of 2024, when Lilly's earnings came in roughly 19.5% below the consensus estimate. More recently, the big pharma company narrowly missed earnings expectations by around 3.4%. Regardless of the size of the miss, though, investors expect a stock with a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 36.6 to be practically perfect.
Concerns about rising competition in the obesity drug market have also weighed on Lilly's share price. Novo Nordisk is on track to file for regulatory approval of CagriSema in early 2026. CVS Health recently chose Novo Nordisk's weight-loss drug Wegovy as a preferred drug on its formulary over Zepbound. Roche teamed up with Zealand Pharma, which has a promising weight-loss drug in clinical development. Viking Therapeutics is advancing its experimental obesity drug VK2735 into late-stage clinical testing.
To add more uncertainty to the mix, the Trump administration has threatened major tariffs on pharmaceutical imports. Lilly CEO David Ricks acknowledged in the company's Q1earnings callthat tariffs "would have a negative effect on Lilly and for our industry."
Reuters also recently reported that the White House is considering implementing international reference pricing, which would peg the price Medicare pays for prescription drugs to the prices that other major countries pay. Ricks said in the Q1 call that looking at U.S. versus European list prices for drugs in isolation is "a nonsensical idea."
Key reasons to consider buying Lilly stock
Why consider buying Lilly stock with these issues in the forefront? The most important reason to invest in the drugmaker is still its growth prospects.
Sales are booming for Lilly's tirzepatide products, Mounjaro and Zepbound. The company's market share for incretin analogs now tops 50%. Notably, Lilly's market share is increasing while Novo Nordisk's share is decreasing.
Lilly's pipeline features other promising obesity drugs as well. The company plans to file for approvals of orforglipron (a weight-loss pill taken daily) later this year, pending successful completion of current phase 3 studies. Lilly hopes to follow up with regulatory submissions of orforglipron as a treatment for type 2 diabetes in the first half of 2026.
Breast cancer drug Verzenio continues to enjoy solid momentum, with sales jumping 10% year over year in Q1. The therapy is especially growing in international markets.
Lilly has 25 programs in late-stage testing, notably including Jaypirca as a first-line monotherapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia and olomorasib in treating non-small cell lung cancer. The company also awaits regulatory approvals for tirzepatide in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and imlunestrant in breast cancer.
Weighing the pros and cons
Should investors buy Lilly stock on the dip? I think it's important to weigh all the pros and cons first. However, the balance tips in favor of investing in this drugmaker, in my opinion.
I fully expect Lilly to remain a dominant player in the obesity and type 2 diabetes markets. The company should continue to make inroads in oncology and other indications. The Trump administration's potential pharmaceutical tariffs and Medicare pricing changes are wild cards that could change the dynamics. Still, though, I think Lilly's sell-off presents a buying opportunity.

Down Nearly 20%: Should You Buy the Dip on Eli Lilly?

Halozyme Therapeutics HALO reported first-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings of $1.11 per share, which comprehensively beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 95 cents. Earnings rose 41% year over year.
Total revenues in the first quarter increased 35% year over year to $264.9 million. Revenues too surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $239 million. (Find the latest EPS estimates and surprises on Zacks Earnings Calendar.)
The top-line growth was primarily driven by higher royalty payments from Roche RHHBY for Phesgo and J&J JNJ for subcutaneous Darzalex (daratumumab) as well as an increase in sales of bulk rHuPH20 during the quarter.
Several companies use HALO’s Enhanze technology to develop a subcutaneous formulation of their currently marketed drugs. Halozyme now has several marketed partnered drugs based on this technology, including the subcutaneous formulation of J&J’s Darzalex and Roche’s Phesgo.
Shares of Halozyme were up 6.5% in after-hours trading on May 6, owing to the better-than-expected results as well as the increased financial outlook for 2025.
Year to date, shares of Halozyme have rallied 24.2% against the industry’s decline of 2.8%.

HALO’s Q1 Results in Detail
Halozyme’s top line comprises product sales, royalties and revenues under collaborative agreements.
Royalty revenues totaled $168.2 million in the first quarter, up 39% from the year-ago quarter’s level. This was mainly due to the robust demand for Phesgo, subcutaneous Darzalex and Vyvgart Hytrulo on which it earns royalties. Royalty revenues beat our model estimate of $153.3 million.
Product sales were $78 million in the first quarter, up 33.1% from the year-ago quarter’s level. HALO has two commercial proprietary products, Hylenex and Xyosted, with the latter acquired from Antares Pharma in 2022. Product sales beat our model estimate of $65.7 million.
Revenues under collaborative agreements were $18.6 million in the first quarter, increasing 11.4% on a year-over-year basis.
Adjusted EBITDA was $162 million in the first quarter, reflecting a 40% increase from the prior-year quarter.
Halozyme had cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of $747.9 million as of March 31, 2025, compared with $596.1 million as of Dec. 31, 2024.
HALO's 2025 Guidance Raised
Owing to increased royalty revenues due to the continued strong growth of JNJ’s Darzalex SC and RHHBY’s Phesgo and the robust growth of VYVGART Hytrulo, the company raised its total revenue guidance for 2025.
Total revenues are now expected in the range of $1.20 billion to $1.28 billion compared with the earlier projection of $1.15 billion to $1.22 billion.
Royalty revenues are now anticipated in the range of $750-$785 million, compared with the previous expectation of $725-$750 million.
Adjusted EBITDA is now expected in the band of $790-$840 million, compared with the earlier expectation of $755-$805 million.
Adjusted earnings are now expected in the range of $5.30-$5.70 per share in 2025 versus the previous projection of $4.95-$5.35 per share.

HALO Stock Up on Q1 Earnings and Revenue Beat, Raised 2025 View

Biogen BIIB reported first-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $3.02, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.32.
Earnings declined 18% year over year on a reported basis, owing to costs related to an upfront payment of $165 million made to Stoke Therapeutics STOK. BIIB entered into a collaboration agreement with STOK for the development and commercialization of the latter’s pipeline candidate, zorevunersen for treating Dravet syndrome in February. Total revenues in the first quarter came in at $2.43 billion, up 6% year over year on a reported basis and 8% on a constant-currency basis. Lower sales of Biogen’s key multiple sclerosis (MS) drugs like Tecfidera and Tysabri were partially offset by higher revenues from new drugs. Sales of the spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) drug, Spinraza, improved slightly in the quarter. Revenues beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.23 billion.
Year to date, shares of Biogen have declined 20.9% compared with the industry’s decrease of 3.3%.

BIIB's Q1 Revenues in Detail
Total product sales in the quarter were $1.73 billion, up 1% year over year on a reported basis and 3% on a constant-currency basis.
Revenues from anti-CD20 therapeutic programs declined 4% to $378 million. The revenues include royalties on sales of Roche’s RHHBY Ocrevus and Biogen’s share of RHHBY’s drugs, namely Rituxan, Gazyva and Lunsumio.
Contract manufacturing and royalty revenues surged 61% year over year on a reported basis to $293 million. Alzheimer’s collaboration revenues were $33 million compared with $3 million in the year-ago quarter.
Alzheimer’s collaboration revenues include Biogen’s 50% share of net product revenues and cost of sales (including royalties) from Alzheimer’s drug Leqembi (lecanemab), which has been developed in collaboration with Eisai. Eisai recorded nearly $96 million in global revenues from Leqembi sales in the first quarter, reflecting an increase from $87 million in the previous quarter.
Leqembi has been launched in the United States, Japan, China, South Korea, Mexico and some other countries. The European Commission (EC) granted marketing authorization to Leqembi for early AD in April 2025.
BIIB's Q1 MS Revenues Decline
Biogen’s MS revenues totaled $953 million, down 11% on a reported basis (10% on a constant-currency basis) due to generic competition for Tecfidera and rising competitive pressure in the MS market.
Tecfidera sales declined almost 19% to $206.1 million as multiple generic versions of the drug have been launched in the United States, North America and certain EU countries. Tecfidera sales beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $201 million and our model estimate of $185.7 million.
Vumerity recorded $138.8 million in sales, up around 8.9% year over year. Vumerity sales missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $141 million and our model estimate of $139.8 million.
Tysabri sales declined 11.5% year over year to $381.5 million. Tysabri's sales beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $364 million.
Combined interferon revenues (Avonex and Plegridy) in the quarter were $226.3 million, down 7.1% due to a continued shift from the injectable platform to oral or high-efficacy therapies.
Per management, around 45% of BIIB’s total product revenues in the first quarter were generated from products outside of the company's MS business.
BIIB's Rare Disease Drugs Sales Rise
Sales of Spinraza rose 24.2% to $423.9 million driven by the favorable timing of shipments. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $365 million and our estimate of $338.1 million.
Rare disease drug Skyclarys, which was added with the 2023 acquisition of Reata Pharmaceuticals, generated sales of $123.9 million compared with $102.2 million in the previous quarter. An expected Medicare discount dynamics hurt Skyclarys’ sales in the United States, partially offset by demand growth.

Biosimilar revenues declined 8% year over year to $180.8 million in the first quarter.
BIIB's Q1 Cost Discussion
Adjusted research and development (R&D) expenses declined 3% year over year to $427 million, driven by the company’s cost-saving initiatives under its “Fit for Growth” program and savings from the R&D portfolio prioritization efforts.
Adjusted selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses rose 1% to $572 million due to higher costs to support the new product launches, partially offset by cost savings under the “Fit for Growth” program.
BIIB Re-Affirms 2025 Sales Guidance, Cuts EPS View
The company reaffirmed its total revenue guidance for 2025.
Total revenues in 2025 are expected to decline by a mid-single-digit percentage in constant currency terms versus the 2024 level. A further decline in MS product revenues is expected to be partially offset by higher revenues from new products.
To reflect the ~ 95 cents adverse impact from a $165 million upfront payment made to STOK, Biogen lowered its adjusted EPS guidance for 2025. The company now expects earnings per share to be in the range of $14.50 to $15.50 compared with the previous expectation of $15.25 to $16.25. The updated guidance fell short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $15.63 per share.
Combined R&D and SG&A costs are expected to be around $3.9 billion in 2025.

BIIB's Q1 Earnings Miss, Revenues Top Mark, 2025 EPS Guidance Cut

Pfizer stock (NYSE: PFE) recently reported its Q1 results, with revenues missing and earnings exceeding the street estimates. The company reported revenue of $13.7 billion and adjusted earnings of $0.92 per share, compared to the consensus estimates of $14.1 billion and $0.68, respectively. The company reaffirmed its guidance for the full-year.
Since the beginning of the year, PFE stock has underperformed the S&P 500 index, delivering -13% returns compared to the index’s 6% fall. Investor sentiment toward PFE has been negatively impacted by recent developments, such as the discontinuation of its experimental sickle cell disease treatment and two oral pills for obesity, including danuglipron over safety concerns. Now, if you are looking for an upside with a smoother ride than an individual stock, consider the High Quality portfolio, which has outperformed the S&P, and clocked >91% returns since inception.
Pfizer’s revenue of $13.7 billion in Q1 reflected an 8% y-o-y decline. While Vyndaqel sales surged 33% to $1.5 billion, Paxlovid sales plunged 75% to $491 million. Also, Comirnaty, Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine, generated $565 million in sales during the quarter, marking a significant growth from the $354 million revenue recorded in the same period last year. Pfizer’s adjusted net income margin of 38.2% in Q1’25 was much better than the 31.4% in the prior-year quarter. This led to a 12% y-o-y rise in the bottom line to $0.92 during the quarter, despite a decline in the top line.
Looking forward, Pfizer maintained its 2025 outlook of sales to be in the range of $61 billion and $64 billion and adjusted earnings to be in the range of $2.80 and $3.00 per share, versus $63.6 billion top-line and $3.11 bottom line in 2024. The company hasn’t taken into account any tariff related headwinds that may arise in the future. Pfizer has been focused on improving its profitability, and it has increased the cost-savings target to $7.7 billion by the end of this year.
Although Pfizer posted a mixed Q1, its stock hasn’t seen any significant change post the results announcement. Now, if we look at a slightly longer period, the changes in PFE stock over the recent years have been far from consistent, with annual returns being considerably more volatile than the S&P 500.
In contrast, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio, with a collection of 30 stocks, is considerably less volatile. And it has comfortably outperformed the S&P 500 over the last four-year period. At levels of $23, it is trading at 8x trailing earnings of $2.91 per share, much lower than the stock’s average P/E ratio of 13x over the last five years. Although a modest downward adjustment to the valuation multiple may be warranted to reflect the lack of a solid long-term revenue growth trajectory after the decline in sales of Covid-19 products lately, we believe the current gap remains too wide.

What's Next For Pfizer Stock After A Mixed Q1?

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. REGN reported first-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $8.22, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $8.43. The reported figure was down 14% from $9.55 reported in the year-ago quarter. (Find the latest EPS estimates and surprises on Zacks Earnings Calendar.)
The decline in the bottom line can be attributed to lower revenues and higher operating expenses.
Total revenues decreased 4% year over year to $3 billion due to lower sales of lead drug Eylea. Revenues also missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.27 billion. Sales of oncology drug, Libtayo, also missed estimates.
Shares are trading down in response to lower-than-expected results. Regeneron’s shares have lost 14.1% year to date compared with the industry’s decline of 4.7%.

Eylea Pulls Down REGN’s Q1 Results
Eylea’s sales in the United States plunged 39% year over year to $736 million, primarily due to increased competition from other drugs like Roche’s RHHBY Vabysmo, loss in market share to compounded bevacizumab due to patient affordability constraints and transition of patients to higher doses of the drug (Eylea HD).
Please note that Regeneron co-developed Eylea with the HealthCare unit of Bayer AG BAYRY. Regeneron records net product sales of Eylea in the United States and Bayer does the same outside the country. The company records its share of profits in connection with Eylea sales outside the United States as collaboration revenues.
In August 2023, the FDA approved Eylea HD (higher dose of Eylea) for the treatment of patients with wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema and diabetic retinopathy. Eylea HD generated revenues of $307 million in the United States. The figure surged 54% year over year, driven by the addition of new patients and the transition of patients from Eylea.
Total Eylea and Eylea HD sales in the United States were $1 billion, down 26% year over year. The figure missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.2 billion.
Total Eylea and Eylea HD product sales were negatively impacted by lower wholesaler inventory levels at the end of the first quarter of 2025 (compared to the previous quarter).
Total revenues include collaboration revenues of $1.53 billion from Sanofi SNY and Bayer. The figure increased 20.9% from that recorded in the year-ago quarter. Total collaboration revenues beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.5 billion.
Sanofi’s collaboration revenues increased 30% to $1.2 billion, driven by profits associated with higher Dupixent sales. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.1 billion. We note that Sanofi records global net product sales of Dupixent and Kevzara, while Regeneron records its share of profits/losses in connection with the global sales of both drugs. Dupixent’s sales increased 19% year over year to $3.7 billion.
Bayer’s collaboration revenues totaled $344 million, down 3% year over year.
Regeneron records net product sales of Praluent in the United States and Sanofi does the same outside the country. SNY pays REGN a royalty on such sales. Regeneron records global net product sales of Libtayo and pays Sanofi a royalty on such sales.
Total Libtayo sales were $285.1 million, up 8% year over year. The figure missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $346 million.
Praluent’s net sales in the United States were $56.8 million. Kevzara recorded global sales of $116.4 million, up 24% from the year-ago quarter’s level.
Gross margin decreased to 85% from 89% due to higher inventory write-offs and reserves. Adjusted R&D expenses increased 6% year over year to $1.2 billion due to the advancement of the company's pipeline and higher headcount-related costs. Adjusted SG&A expenses decreased 8% to $537 million.
In February 2025, the board of directors authorized a new share repurchase program to repurchase up to an additional $3.0 billion of the common stock. During the first quarter of 2025, REGN repurchased shares for $1.052 billion. As of March 31, 2025, approximately $3.874 billion remained available for share repurchases.
In April 2025, REGN declared a cash dividend of $0.88 per share.
Key Pipeline and Regulatory Updates
The FDA approved a label expansion of Dupixent for the treatment of adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) who remain symptomatic despite antihistamine treatment.
In February 2025, the FDA accepted the supplemental biologics license application (sBLA) for Dupixent in bullous pemphigoid for priority review, with a target action date of June 20, 2025. A regulatory application has also been submitted in the European Union.
The FDA accepted (for priority review) an sBLA seeking approval of Eylea HD for the treatment of macular edema following RVO and for broadening the dosing schedule to include every four-week (monthly) dosing across approved indications. The target action date is August 19, 2025.
However, the regulatory body issued a complete response letter (CRL) for the Eylea HD pre-filled syringe. The CRL was mostly issued due to a third-party component supplier.
The FDA also issued a CRL to the sBLA for Eylea HD to add extended dosing intervals. The FDA indicated that the submitted data did not support extended dosing intervals greater than every 16 weeks.
The BLA seeking approval of odronextamab in relapsed/refractory (R/R) follicular lymphoma was resubmitted and the FDA accepted it for review with a target action date of July 30, 2025.
The FDA also accepted (for review) the resubmission of the BLA for linvoseltamab, a bispecific antibody targeting BCMA and CD3, in relapsed/refractory (R/R) multiple myeloma. The agency set a target action date of July 10, 2025.
The European Commission granted conditional marketing approval to linvoseltamab to treat adults with R/R multiple myeloma. The drug was approved under the brand name Lynozyfic.
Our Take on REGN's Performance
Regeneron's performance in the first quarter was dismal. The plunge in Eylea sales adversely impacted the top line.
Eylea sales have been under pressure for some time now due to competition from Vabysmo. We note that Vabysmo's uptake has been outstanding. Roche designed Vabysmo to block pathways involving Ang-2 and VEGF-A.

Regeneron has a tough road ahead, as it will take a long time for Eylea HD to contribute significantly to the top line.
The company also suffered a few regulatory setbacks in its effort to broaden the oncology portfolio.
Meanwhile, Regeneron announced a 10-year agreement with Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies to manufacture and supply Regeneron's commercial bulk drug product at Fujifilm's North Carolina campus. This agreement is anticipated to nearly double REGN’s large-scale manufacturing capacity in the United States.
The decision follows President Trump's announcement of (potential) trade tariffs on pharmaceutical imports.

Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) is scheduled to report earnings on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. How Will Pfizer Stock React To Its Upcoming Earnings?

AbbVie Inc. ABBV reported first-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.46, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.39. The reported EPS also exceeded the company’s guidance of $2.34-$2.38 issued earlier this month. Earnings rose 6.5% year over year.
ABBV’s revenues of $13.34 billion beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $12.91 billion. Sales rose 8.4% year over year on a reported basis and 9.8% on an operational basis. Revenues in the first quarter were driven by robust sales of key drugs Rinvoq, Skyrizi, Venclexta and Vraylar, coupled with significant contributions from newer drugs, namely Ubrelvy, Elahere, Epkinly and Qulipta. Sales of Humira and Imbruvica declined year over year.
All growth rates mentioned below are on a year-on-year basis and at constant exchange rates (CER).
Immunology Drugs Drive ABBV’s Top Line
In immunology, net revenues from Rinvoq for the first quarter totaled $1.72 billion, up 59.7%. The upside can be attributed to label expansions of the drug to include new patient populations in recent quarters. Rinvoq’s sales beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate and our model estimate of $1.61 billion and $1.62 billion, respectively. The drug’s sales figure also exceeded the company’s guidance of $1.6 billion.
Net revenues recorded from Skyrizi were $3.43 billion, up 72%. This surge in sales was due to label expansions of the drug to include new patient populations in recent quarters. Skyrizi sales beat both the Zacks Consensus Estimate and our model estimate of $3.19 billion. The reported sales figure also surpassed the company’s expectation of $3.2 billion.
AbbVie’s flagship product Humira recorded a sales decline of 49.5% to $1.12 billion for the first quarter. Sales in the United States declined 58% to $744 million, while ex-U.S. market sales were down 19.5% to $377 million. The company had previously forecasted about $900 million in Humira U.S. sales. The drug’s overall sales missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.32 billion and our model estimate of $1.31 billion.
This substantial decline in Humira sales was due to the drug’s loss of exclusivity in the United States since January 2023. The drug lost its exclusivity in ex-U.S. territories following the launch of generics in 2018.
ABBV Neuroscience Drugs’ Performance
Sales from the neuroscience portfolio increased 17% to $2.28 billion, driven by higher sales of Botox Therapeutic, depression drug Vraylar, and migraine drugs Ubrelvy and Qulipta. Neuroscience sales beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate and our model estimate of $2.16 billion and $2.21 billion, respectively. The reported sales numbers also surpassed ABBV’s forecast of $2.1 billion from the segment.
While Botox Therapeutic sales rose 17% to $866 million, sales of Vraylar increased 10.3% to $765 million.
Sales of Ubrelvy totaled $240 million, up 18%. Qulipta sales increased 48.3% to $193 million.
Sales of Vyalev, the recently approved transformative therapy for advanced Parkinson’s disease, totaled $63 million.
ABBV Oncology Drugs’ Performance
AbbVie’s oncology/hematology sales rose 7.5% to $1.63 billion in the quarter, as sales from the recently acquired ovarian cancer drug Elahere and rising Venclexta sales more than offset the declining Imbruvica sales. The metric beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.51 billion and our model estimate of $1.52 billion. The reported sales figure also exceeded the company’s guidance of $1.5 billion.
First-quarter net revenues from Imbruvica totaled $738 million, down 11.9%. However, sales of the drug beat both the Zacks Consensus Estimate and our estimate of $676 million. ABBV markets this drug in partnership with Johnson & Johnson JNJ.
U.S. sales of J&J-partnered Imbruvica declined 13.3% to $529 million due to rising competition from novel oral treatments. AbbVie shares international profits earned from Imbruvica with J&J. The company’s share of profit from the drug’s international sales declined 8.2% to $209 million.
AbbVie’s leukemia drug Venclexta generated revenues of $665 million in the reported quarter, reflecting 12.3% growth. AbbVie markets Venclexta in collaboration with Roche RHHBY. Sales from the Roche-partnered drug beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $625 million and our model estimate of $630 million.
Elahere, added from last year’s acquisition of ImmunoGen, generated revenues of $179 million compared with $148 million in the previous quarter. Sales of the drug beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $159 million as well as our model estimate of $170 million.
Epkinly sales, which comprise AbbVie’s share of profit from U.S. revenues and product revenues from international markets, amounted to $51 million in the quarter compared with $40 million in the previous quarter.
ABBV’s Aesthetics & Other Drugs
AbbVie’s aesthetics portfolio sales were down 10.2% to $1.10 billion, in line with its previous projection. Botox Cosmetic sales fell 10.7% to $556 million. Juvederm sales declined 20% to $231 million.
Eye care portfolio sales declined 2.2% to $506 million. Sales of Ozurdex, a key drug in the portfolio, fell 2.4% to $123 million.

Adjusted SG&A expenses rose 8.2% year over year to $3.28 billion. Adjusted R&D expenses amounted to $2.05 billion, up 13.3%.
ABBV Raises 2025 EPS Guidance
AbbVie raised its EPS guidance for the full year. The company expects adjusted EPS to be in the range of $12.09-$12.29, up from the previous guidance of $11.99-$12.19. However, the revised guidance does not reflect any trade policy shift, including the U.S. tariffs on the pharmaceutical sector.
Our Take on ABBV’s Results
AbbVie’s first-quarter earnings and sales beat estimates. The company also raised its EPS guidance for 2025, likely driven by stronger-than-expected sales of its newer immunology drugs, Rinvoq and Skyrizi. While Humira’s steep decline exceeded even AbbVie’s projections, the impact was mitigated by solid performances from newer assets like Ubrelvy, Qulipta, and Vyalev, as well as the better-than-expected sales performance of Imbruvica, despite its year-over-year decline.
Shares of AbbVie were up over 5% in pre-market trading today, likely due to the encouraging guidance update. Year to date, the stock has gained about 2% against the industry’s 1% decline.

The company’s oncology strategy is also gaining traction, supported by increasing contributions from Elahere and Epkinly. Notably, Elahere is the first and only antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) approved for an ovarian cancer indication.
Though AbbVie faced some key pipeline setbacks last year, it has been proactively pursuing strategic collaborations and partnership deals across several therapeutic areas to further strengthen its pipeline and drive long-term growth. It recently forayed into the lucrative obesity space through a licensing deal with Denmark-based Gubra for the latter’s experimental obesity drug.
