However, the company currently trades at a low valuation. Meanwhile, it only started paying dividends last year. It has already raised its payout by 5% earlier this year. With a cash-rich balance sheet and a business that generates lots of cash, Alphabet should have no trouble growing its business in the future. The company has lots of growth drivers, including its emerging AI platform built around Google Gemini. AI is already driving accelerated growth across its business, which could continue for years to come.
American Water Works
American Water Works (NYSE: AWK) is a leading water utility. The company generates stable cash flow by providing water, wastewater, and other services to customers under government-regulated rate structures and long-term, fixed-rate contracts. That enables it to produce durable cash flow to pay dividends.
The water company's payout currently yields 2.3%, which is almost double the S&P 500's dividend yield of around 1.2%. American Water Works pays out 55% to 60% of its durable earnings in dividends. It retains the rest to invest in expanding its existing water utilities and buying new ones. These growth investments should increase its earnings per share by 7% to 9% annually. American Water Works expects to grow its dividend at the same rate as its earnings rise.
Broadcom
Semiconductor and software giant Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) also has a rather lackluster dividend yield of 0.9%. However, the company has a stellar record of increasing its payout. It has raised its payout in all fourteen years since it initiated a dividend in its 2011 fiscal year, including hiking it by 11% last year.
Broadcom should have no trouble increasing its dividend in the future. The company is growing fast, driven by robust demand for its AI semiconductors. AI revenue grew a staggering 220% last year to $12.2 billion. With AI still in the early stages of deployment, Broadcom has a long growth runway ahead.
Brookfield Renewable
Renewable energy juggernaut Brookfield Renewable (NYSE: BEPC)(NYSE: BEP) currently has a more than 4.5% dividend yield. The company backs its high-yielding payout with very stable and steadily growing cash flow.
Brookfield sells about 90% of the power it produces under long-term, fixed-rate power purchase agreements, which link 70% of its revenue to inflation. In addition to inflation indexation, Brookfield's growth drivers include margin enhancement activities, development projects, and acquisitions. The company expects this quartet will boost its funds from operations (FFO) per share by more than 10% annually. That easily supports Brookfield's plans to increase its dividend by 5% to 9% per year. The company has grown its payout at a 6% compound annual rate since 2001.
Realty Income
Realty Income (NYSE: O) has a more than 5.5% dividend yield. The real estate investment trust (REIT) backs its high-yielding payout with very stable rental income. It primarily invests in properties secured by long-term net leases, which require tenants to cover building insurance, routine maintenance, and real estate taxes.
The REIT has an incredible record of increasing its dividend. It has raised its payment 131 times since its public market listing three decades ago, including for 111 quarters in a row. Realty Income has grown its payout at a 4.2% compound annual rate during that period, primarily by investing in additional income-producing real estate. With a strong financial profile, the REIT should have no trouble continuing to deliver a steadily rising income stream to shareholders.
PepsiCo
PepsiCo (NASDAQ: PEP) has a more than 4% dividend yield. The beverage and snacks giant has an amazing record of increasing its payout. It raised its payment by 5% earlier this year, extending its growth streak to 53 straight years. That kept PepsiCo in the elite group of Dividend Kings, companies with 50 or more years of annual dividend increases.
The company invests heavily to organically expand its business. It expects its investments to deliver 4% to 6% annual revenue growth and high-single-digit earnings-per-share growth over the long term. PepsiCo also uses its strong balance sheet to make acquisitions that accelerate its growth. Those drivers should enable it to continue increasing its dividend.
Prologis
Leading industrial REIT Prologis (NYSE: PLD) has a dividend yield approaching 4%. The company has grown its dividend at a 13% compound annual rate over the past five years. That's more than double the pace of other REITs, at 6%, and the S&P 500, at 5%.
Prologis is in a strong position to continue increasing its dividend. Demand for warehouse space is strong while new supplies will likely remain limited, which should support steady rent growth. The company also has a strong balance sheet, enabling it to invest in development projects and acquisitions.
Johnson & Johnson
Healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) has a dividend yield of more than 3%. The company raised its payout by 4.8% earlier this year, extending its growth streak to an impressive 63 straight years.
Johnson & Johnson backs its dividend with one of the healthiest financial profiles in the world. It's one of only two companies with a pristine AAA bond rating. The company generates about $20 billion in free cash flow annually, more than enough to cover its $11.8 billion dividend outlay. It also invests heavily in research and development, as well as making acquisitions to enhance its pipeline and current product offerings.
NextEra Energy
NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) has a 3% dividend yield. The utility has grown its payout at a brisk 10% compound annual rate over the past 20 years. It plans to deliver around 10% annual dividend growth through at least next year.
Powering the company's rapidly rising dividend is its heavy investment in renewable energy and in expanding its electric utility in Florida. NextEra Energy sees tremendous growth potential ahead, fueled by surging demand for power from catalysts like AI data centers. That should enable the company to continue growing its earnings at a healthy rate, supporting steady dividend increases.
Visa
Visa (NYSE: V) has a rather low dividend yield of 0.7%. However, the credit card giant is growing its payout briskly. It has raised its payout annually for over a decade and a half, growing it at a more than 17% compound annual rate over the past 10 years.
The credit card company generates massive and growing free cash flow. It has produced almost $9.5 billion in free cash flow over the last 12 months. Visa is returning that money to investors via share repurchases and dividends. It's also investing in expanding its business, which is growing at a double-digit annual clip.
Great dividend stocks to buy
These companies do a great job of paying dividends. They have excellent records of increasing their payouts, which should continue. That should enable them to generate strong total returns over the long term.

Enbridge is built to pay you well today and tomorrow
Reuben Gregg Brewer (Enbridge): Three decades' worth of dividend increases back Enbridge's lofty 6% dividend yield. That's a pretty enticing story right there, given the paltry 1.2% yield on offer from the S&P 500, but it isn't the whole story.
Enbridge just so happens to be one of the most reliable midstream stocks you can buy, though even that doesn't complete the tale. The core of Enbridge's business is its oil and natural gas pipeline network. It charges customers fees for the use of its assets, which generates consistent cash flows regardless of the price of the commodities flowing through the company's system. So, it is actually a reliable energy stock, yet so much more than that, too.
One of Enbridge's key goals is to provide the world with the energy it needs. Which is why the company has been shifting away from oil and toward cleaner fuels like natural gas and renewable power. So, atop the pipeline foundation, it has also built a regulated natural gas utility business and a solar and wind power operation. All while maintaining an investment-grade-rated balance sheet and keeping its distribution well within its target range of 60% to 70% of distributable cash flows.
All in, Enbridge is trying to make sure that it can pay you a fat dividend right now and well into the future. Put it all together, and this 6% yielding midstream giant could be the dream stock you've been looking to add to your dividend portfolio.
A prodigious (and growing) passive income stream
Matt DiLallo (Plains All American Pipeline): Plains All American Pipeline currently has a dividend yield of more than 8%. That's nearly 7 times higher than the S&P 500's yield.
While a high dividend yield can be a warning sign that the company has a high risk profile, that's not the case with Plains All American Pipeline. The master limited partnership (MLP) generates very stable cash flow. Currently, 80% of its income comes from predictable fee-for-service agreements. That will improve to 85% once the company closes the sale of its Canadian natural gas liquids (NGL) assets.
That transaction will not only improve the durability of its cash flows but also enhance its financial flexibility. Plains All American Pipeline expects to generate about $3 billion in proceeds following the sale. It plans to use that money to maintain its strong balance sheet, make disciplined bolt-on acquisitions, and complete opportunistic repurchases. Putting that capital to work will help grow the company's cash flow per unit, enhancing its ability to distribute cash to investors.
Plains All American plans to grow its dividend by approximately 10% annually until it reaches its targeted dividend payout ratio of 160% (it expects this ratio to be around 175% this year). It can increase its distribution alongside its growing cash flow once it reaches its targeted payout percentage.
The company's high-yielding and sustainable payout makes it an excellent option for investors seeking an above-average passive income stream. While Plains All American is an MLP that sends its investors a Schedule K-1 Federal Tax Form each year, investors can also invest in its general partner (Plains GP Holdings), which pays a similarly high dividend rate without the potential tax complications (it sends a 1099-DIV).
A powerful payout
Neha Chamaria (Brookfield Renewable): Plenty of dividend stocks offer at least triple the S&P 500 index yield. But the most rewarding dividend stocks are also often the ones that back their yields with robust cash flows and grow their dividend payouts consistently over time. Brookfield Renewable is one such compelling dividend stock for income investors.
Shares of Brookfield Renewable yield 4.6%, and the stock has increased its dividend every year since its formation in 2011, with its funds from operations (FFO) comfortably covering its dividend payout throughout that time. Over time, Brookfield Renewable's assets have grown by leaps and bounds -- the company is one of the largest publicly traded renewable energy players in the world today, with over 35 gigawatts of operational capacity and an even bigger pipeline spanning hydropower, solar energy, wind energy, and distributed energy and storage.
With more economies switching from fossil fuels to cleaner sources of energy and global megatrends like digitalization and data centers driving demand for power, Brookfield Renewable has massive growth catalysts ahead.
The renewable energy giant plans to invest $8 billion to $9 billion over the next five years and is confident of generating total annual returns of 12% to 15% for its shareholders. That includes a targeted 5% to 9% annual increase in dividends. Combining that dividend growth with the 4.5%-plus yield makes Brookfield Renewable one of the top high-yield dividend stocks to buy and hold.

That, coupled with a dividend yield of 4.2% for the corporate shares or 5% for units of the partnership, makes it a rock-solid dividend stock to buy.
5. American Water Works: Yield 2.4%
American Water Works (NYSE: AWK) is the largest regulated water and wastewater utility in the U.S. In addition to 14 million consumers, the company also serves 18 military bases. It is the kind of low-risk business that can reward shareholders richly over time. American Water Works plans to spend a whopping $40 billion to $42 billion on infrastructure over the next 10 years.
That should ensure a steady base rate growth, which should drive earnings higher. The water utility expects its earnings per share (EPS) to grow at a compound annual rate of 7% to 9% in the long term, and its dividend growth to be in line with EPS. So, with the stock offering a potential hike of at least 7% in dividends per share every year, it's a no-brainer dividend stock to buy now for anyone looking to secure a steady stream of extra income for years, even decades, to come.
6. Waste Management: Yield 1.5%
Waste Management (NYSE: WM) is North America's largest waste management services provider, and it generates recession-resilient revenues and cash flows. Waste Management recently forayed into a lucrative market -- medical waste -- by acquiring the largest player in the industry, Stericycle, for $7.2 billion. Waste Management now expects to generate annual cost synergies of $250 million, which is twice its original expectation. Meanwhile, the company also sees significant growth opportunities in markets such as recycling.
The company has increased its dividend for 22 consecutive years, growing it at a CAGR of 7.4% over the past three years. Waste Management's stock has delivered a monster performance in the past and could continue to generate big returns, given the company's acquisition and management's goal of paying out 40% to 50% of its free cash flow (FCF) in dividends.

The International Energy Agency projects that global electricity generation from renewable energy sources to jump by 90% from 2023 to 2030. 8. Caterpillar: Yield 1.6%
Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) is a cyclical stock, and its earnings and cash flows ebb and flow with the economy. Yet, the company's dividend history is a testament to its brand power; its global leadership in huge industries, such as construction and mining equipment and off-highway diesel and natural gas engines; and management's prudent and shareholder-friendly capital allocation policies.

Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR) is a Dividend King, one of the handful of publicly listed companies in the U.S. that have increased their dividend payouts for at least 50 years. Emerson's 69-year streak, in fact, is one of the longest among the Dividend Kings. The automation giant makes intelligent devices, control systems, and software for some of the largest sectors and industries, including energy, chemicals, metals and mining, life sciences, and industrials.
Emerson Electric generated a gross margin north of 50% and an operating margin of 18% in 2024, reflecting operational efficiency. Its FCF jumped 23% in the year, and the stock has doubled investors' money in five years. Given the massive growth opportunities in automation and Emerson's commitment to dividends, this dividend juggernaut is a solid stock to double up on.
10. Parker-Hannifin: Yield 1%
Parker-Hannifin (NYSE: PH) is one of the most underrated and overlooked dividend stocks out there. The company has increased its dividend for 69 consecutive years and generated monstrous returns over the years.
Parker-Hannifin specializes in motion and control equipment and solutions, catering to large industries such as aerospace, defense, and manufacturing. It generated $20 billion in revenue in 2024 but estimates the market size to be around $145 billion, presenting significant growth opportunities.
Over the past three years, Parker-Hannifin grew its revenue at an 8% CAGR. It recently bumped its 2029 financial targets and expects to grow adjusted EPS at a 10% CAGR and generate a FCF margin of 17%, paving the way for bigger dividends.

On top of that, Brookfield expects margin enhancement activities such as securing higher market rates as legacy PPAs expire to add another 2% to 4% to its FFO per share each year. Meanwhile, the company has a large pipeline of renewable energy projects, which should boost its FFO per share by another 4% to 6% each year. Brookfield also has the financial flexibility to make accretive acquisitions, which it anticipates will help push its FFO per-share growth rate above 10% annually.
A low-cost, cash-gushing oil company
ConocoPhillips has built one of the world's lowest-cost oil and gas producers. CEO Ryan Lance noted on the company's first-quarterearnings conference callin early May: "We have a deep, durable, and diverse portfolio. We have decades of inventory below our $40 per barrel WTI [West Texas Intermediate] cost-to-supply threshold, both in the U.S. and internationally." The company also has a disciplined capital allocation framework that Lance said is "battle-tested through the cycles." On top of that, it has an A-rated balance sheet, giving it tremendous financial flexibility.
Those factors put its dividend (which yields more than 3% right now) on a rock-solid foundation. ConocoPhillips has been growing its payout at a well-above-average rate, which it expects will continue. It aims to deliver dividend growth within the top 25% of companies in the S&P 500 in the future.
Fueling that growth is its combination of short-cycle development (U.S. shale) and long-cycle investments (Alaska and LNG). ConocoPhillips expects those long-cycle investments to fuel an incremental $6 billion in annual free cash flow by 2029, putting it on track to deliver sector-leading growth.
A passive-income juggernaut
Energy Transfer operates one of the country's largest energy midstream businesses. It transports, processes, stores, and exports various hydrocarbons. Most of its assets generate predictable fee-based cash flow (roughly 90% of its earnings).
The master limited partnership (MLP), which sends investors a Schedule K-1 Federal Tax Form each year, so investors need to be comfortable with the extra paperwork,, distributes about half its stable cash flow to investors via a payout that currently yields more than 7%. It retains the rest to fund growth projects and maintain its financial flexibility.
Energy Transfer is investing $5 billion into growth capital projects this year. Most of those projects will enter commercial service by the end of next year, fueling incremental earnings growth in 2026 and 2027. The MLP has several more expansion projects under development. It also has a long history of making accretive acquisitions. Its growth investments fuel the view that it can increase its high-yielding payout at a 3% to 5% annual rate in the coming years.
Ample fuel to pay growing dividends
Brookfield Renewable, ConocoPhillips, and Energy Transfer generate lots of cash flow. That gives them the funds to pay above-average dividends that they steadily grow. That combination of income and growth is why they're my top dividend stocks to buy in the sector.

Is This High-Yield Stock a Debt Time Bomb?

The S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) is trading near all-time highs and has a pretty miserly 1.2% or so dividend yield. If you are an income investor, that suggests that you have your work cut out for you right now. But there are great investment options with high yields out there if you take the time to look. Two no-brainer choices today, if you have $2,000 or $20,000 to invest, are Brookfield Renewable (NYSE: BEP)(NYSE: BEPC) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX). Here's what you need to know.
Brookfield Renewable is positioned to grow
Brookfield Renewable owns a globally diversified portfolio of clean energy assets. On the geographic front, its portfolio spans across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. On the technology front, the business has exposure to hydroelectric, solar, wind, energy storage, and nuclear power assets. It is as close to a one-stop shop as you can get in the renewable energy space.

The interesting thing here, however, is that Brookfield Renewable is not a regulated utility. It largely sells its power under long-term contracts to others, including both companies and utilities. This actually gives it a lot of room to grow as the world increasingly shifts from carbon-based fuels toward cleaner alternatives. For example, it recently inked a deal with Microsoft to provide around 10.5 gigawatts of power that the technology giant will use to support its data center build-out. Basically, Brookfield Renewable can grow as it sees fit without having to kowtow to regulators who may put limits on its investment plans.
And this brings up another interesting fact: Brookfield Renewable is run by Brookfield Asset Management (NYSE: BAM). Brookfield Asset Management has an over-100-year history of investing in infrastructure on a global scale. And it plans to increase its clean-energy investments, where Brookfield Renewable is a key source of funding, by around 100% by 2030. Buying Brookfield Renewable lets you partner with Brookfield Asset Management on that growth.
There are two ways to buy in here. Brookfield Renewable Partners has a 5.6% yield. Brookfield Renewable Corporation has a 4.6% dividend yield. Both represent the exact same entity and have the exact same dividend payment. The yield difference is because demand for the corporate share class is higher, which makes sense given that large institutional investors are often barred from owning partnerships.
Either way you go, Brookfield Renewable appears well positioned to expand its business as the world goes green. And you can collect a fat yield that has been regularly increased if you buy in right now. A $2,000 investment will get you 75 shares of the partnership units and 60 shares of the corporate shares.
Chevron is out of favor for two reasons
Chevron is a globally diversified, integrated energy giant offering an attractive 4.7% dividend yield. The dividend has been increased for an incredible 38 consecutive years. That's incredible because oil and natural gas prices tend to be highly volatile, which means that Chevron's top and bottom lines tend to be volatile, too.
However, Chevron has an ace up its sleeve in the form of a strong balance sheet. A low level of leverage allows it to take on debt during industry downturns so it can continue to support its business and dividend. When oil prices recover, as they always have historically, it pays down debt in preparation for the next downturn. In addition to this rock-solid financial foundation, Chevron's diversified business also helps. With investments in energy production (the upstream), energy transportation (the midstream), and energy processing (the downstream), the peaks and valleys of oil prices get muted to some degree.
That said, Chevron is out of favor right now, which has led to the lofty yield. Part of the reason for that is generally weak energy prices. Those low prices are impacting the entire energy sector. But Chevron also has some company-specific issues. First, it is attempting to buy Hess, but the process has turned out to be more complicated than hoped. Second, Chevron has investments in Venezuela, a tenuous country in which to invest. Those assets have become a bit of a political football. Neither of these things is good, but they aren't likely to derail Chevron over the long term.
The currently high yield is an opportunity for investors who can think long term. You may have to suffer through some near-term lagging performance, but if you buy now, you'll get paid well for waiting around. A $2,000 investment in Chevron will get you around 13 shares.
Looking for yield, start with this pair of high yielders
With lofty yields, Brookfield Renewable and Chevron should both be attractive to dividend investors. But the real key to the story here is that both have strong businesses to support those dividends. If you think in decades and not days, these two high-yield stocks could be no-brainer additions to your portfolio right now.

Warren Buffett is a big fan of Chevron (NYSE: CVX). His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 118.6 million shares of the oil giant, or about 6.8% of its outstanding stock. Those shares are currently worth $17.1 billion. That makes Chevron Berkshire's fifth largest holding, at 6.1% of its investment portfolio.
A big draw of Chevron is its high-yielding dividend. It supplies Berkshire with over $800 million in dividend income each year. However, Chevron isn't the only high-yielding dividend stock in the energy sector. Enbridge (NYSE: ENB), Brookfield Renewable (NYSE: BEPC)(NYSE: BEP), and Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) stand out to a few Fool.com contributors as even better energy stocks to buy for a high-yielding income stream.

Enbridge's energy approach is boring and high yielding
Reuben Gregg Brewer (Enbridge): Buffett's portfolio contains both public companies and a huge and varied collection of fully owned businesses. Energy is a big theme across both, with particular emphasis on utilities and midstream assets in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio of owned businesses. Canada's Enbridge can give you exposure to both in one high-yield energy investment, given its lofty 5.9% yield.
The core of Enbridge's business is its midstream portfolio -- largely oil and natural gas pipeline and transportation assets -- which makes up around 75% of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). The rest of the business is split between natural gas utilities and clean energy assets. What's notable here is that shifting along with the world's energy needs is a core business approach, so the current split will probably continue to shift in a "clean" direction. That means you can own Enbridge for decades to come and not have to worry that it will be left behind as energy sources such as solar and wind power grow.
The best part of the story, however, is the reliable dividend growth Enbridge has achieved. It has increased its dividend for 30 consecutive years. And while rapid dividend growth isn't likely, slow and steady is set to continue for the foreseeable future. Management's goal is distributable cash flow growth of roughly 5% a year through the end of the decade, with dividends likely to trail that figure higher over time. A huge yield and steady dividend growth from industries that Buffett likes is kind of hard to ignore.
The renewable energy supermajor
Matt DiLallo (Brookfield Renewable): I'm a big fan of Chevron. Like Buffett, I own shares of the top-tier oil stock.
However, there's one high-yielding energy stock I like even better: Brookfield Renewable. It's becoming a supermajor in the energy industry. With a focus on renewable energy and other sustainable solutions, it's in an even better position to grow its high-yielding dividend in the decades to come. Its yield is currently 4.7%, the same as Chevron's.
Brookfield Renewable operates a globally diversified clean energy business across all major technologies, including hydro, onshore and offshore wind, utility-scale solar, distributed energy, and storage. It also has a growing portfolio of sustainable solutions, including carbon capture and sequestration, biofuels production, advanced recycling, solar panel manufacturing, and global nuclear services.
The company's massive global scale has made it a partner to the world's leading companies in helping them meet their energy needs. For example, Brookfield signed a gargantuan deal last year to develop more than 10.5 gigawatts of renewable power for Microsoft in the 2026-2030 timeframe. That's eight times larger than the biggest single power purchase agreement (PPA) ever signed. The company has deals to supply power to many large corporations and utilities in the coming years. Those PPAs will supply Brookfield with stable and growing cash flow.
Brookfield's overall cash flow stability is another key reason I like it more than Chevron. Whereas Chevron's cash flow ebbs and flows with oil prices, Brookfield has contracted 90% of its power capacity for an average of 14 years. Those PPAs index 70% of its revenues to inflation.
The growth from inflation-driven rate increases, development projects, and other catalysts such as acquisitions powers Brookfield's robust growth profile. The company expects to grow its funds from operations per share by more than 10% annually through 2034. That growth is highly visible and increasingly secure and supports its plan to increase its high-yielding payout at a 5% to 9% annual rate.
Brookfield's combination of scale, diversification, clean energy focus, cash flow stability, and visible growth profile makes for an unbeatable combination.
A reliable Buffett-like dividend stock
Neha Chamaria (Enterprise Products Partners): Buffett invests in businesses and not just stocks. Chevron checks the boxes for his investing style, but there's another stock to consider given its wide moat, strong management, solid financials, and stable dividends. These are just some of the important characteristics Buffett likes to see in a stock he invests in, and Enterprise Products Partners offers all of these and then some.
Enterprise Products Partners provides crucial energy services to the economy by moving crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids, refined products, and petrochemicals through its pipeline spanning over 50,000 miles. Because Enterprise Products is one of the largest midstream energy companies in the U.S., the size and scale of operations provides significant cost and operational efficiencies. That, and management's judicious capital allocation strategies, largely explain why Enterprise Products boasts strong credit ratings and has consistently generated enough cash flows to cover a growing dividend for more than two decades.
Enterprise Products has increased its dividend every year since going public in 1998. That makes 26 consecutive years of dividend increases, which has translated into solid returns for shareholders over time. With Enterprise Products bringing $6 billion worth of major projects online this year, investors can expect its cash flows to grow further and support bigger dividends year after year. With the stock also yielding a hefty 6.7%, Enterprise Products is a great stock to buy if you want to own rock-solid businesses like Buffett.

A high-quality, high-yielding dividend stock
Shares of Brookfield Renewable have been drifting lower and currently sit more than 15% below their 52-week high. That slump has driven up the renewable energy company's dividend yield to more than 5%. That's several times higher than the S&P 500's dividend yield (which is less than 1.5%).
The company supports its high-yielding payout with very durable cash flows. Brookfield sells about 90% of the power it produces under long-term, fixed-rate power purchase agreements (PPAs) with an average remaining term of 14 years. Most of those PPAs index power rates to inflation (70% of Brookfield's revenue). The power producer also has a strong investment-grade balance sheet, which provides further support for its high-yielding payout.
Brookfield Renewable has a terrific record of paying dividends. The company has grown its payout at a 6% compound annual rate since 2001 and has raised its dividend by at least 5% in each of the last 14 years.
Powerful growth for the next decade
Brookfield aims to grow its high-yielding dividend at a 5% to 9% annual rate. That shouldn't be a problem, given the powerful growth it sees ahead.
The company estimates that its inflation-linked PPAs should grow its funds from operations (FFO) per share by 2% to 3% annually for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, market rates for power have been rising faster than inflation. Because of that, Brookfield expects to lock in higher rates on new PPAs as legacy contracts expire. The company estimates that this catalyst will deliver an additional 2% to 4% in annual FFO per share growth over the coming years.
On top of that, Brookfield is building new renewable power-generation capacity. The company expects to commission 8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity this year. It's ramping up its development capabilities to a 10 GW annual run rate by 2027. Development projects should add another 4% to 6% to its FFO per share each year through at least 2030.
Finally, Brookfield routinely recycles capital by selling mature assets and redeploying the proceeds into new, higher-returning investment opportunities. For example, the company recently sold its interest in First Hydro, generating almost 3 times its invested capital.
It also sold an additional 25% stake in its Shepherds Flat wind farm for almost 2 times its invested capital. Meanwhile, it recently closed its acquisition of European renewable energy developer Neoen and agreed to buy National Grid's U.S. renewable energy platform. Accretive acquisitions like those can further boost its FFO per share each year.
Put everything together, and Brookfield Renewable believes it can grow its FFO per share at a rate of more than 10% annually for the foreseeable future. That growth is highly visible and secured through the end of this decade and will be increasingly visible and secured as far out as 2034.
Powerful total return potential
Brookfield Renewable has everything I'm looking for and more in a dividend stock. It pays a high-yielding dividend backed by a rock-solid financial profile. The company also has an excellent record of increasing its dividend, which seems highly likely to continue. On top of all that, it has compelling total return potential.
With a dividend yield of 5% and earnings growing by more than 10% annually, Brookfield could generate total annual returns above 15%, especially given its currently lower share price. That compelling combination of dividend income and upside potential is why it would be the dividend stock I'd buy if I could choose only one this June.

Ex-Dividend Reminder: Brookfield Renewable Partners, Baxter International and Perrigo

Owning high-yielding dividend stocks can be a great way to generate passive income. However, there's one big caveat. The big-time payout needs to be sustainable over the long term. Major factors driving dividend sustainability are companies with a strong financial profile and visible growth prospects.

Highly visible growth through the end of the decade and beyond
Brookfield Renewable owns and operates a globally diversified portfolio of renewable energy assets and sustainable solutions. The company sells about 90% of its capacity under long-term, fixed-rate contracts, the bulk of which link rates to inflation. Many of the company's legacy contracts have below-market rates. They will expire over the next few years, which should enable Brookfield to sign new contracts for this capacity at higher market rates. These catalysts power the company's view that it can grow the funds from operations (FFO) of its existing assets by 4% to 7% per share over the next several years.
On top of that, Brookfield has a vast pipeline of development projects under construction or in advanced stages. This drives the company's belief that it can commission an average of 10 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity annually by 2027 through at least 2030, which would support 5% annual FFO per share growth. The company also expects to complete additional accretive acquisitions to further boost its FFO growth rate. Overall, it expects to deliver 10%+ annual FFO per-share growth.
Brookfield's growth is highly visible and secured through 2029 and increasingly visible and secured through 2034. That powers its view it can grow its more than 5%-yielding dividend by 5%-9% per year over the long term. Brookfield has grown its payout at a 6% compound annual rate since 2001.
Sector-leading growth through 2029
ConocoPhillips believes "we are on the cusp of a compelling multiyear free-cash-flow growth trajectory, led by our high-quality longer-cycle investments in Alaska and LNG," stated CEO Ryan Lance on the first-quarterearnings conference callon May 8. He continued, "This underlying improvement in our free cash flow will structurally lower our breakeven and increase our capacity to return capital to shareholders." Those long-cycle investments will drive an incremental $6 billion in annual free cash flow for the company, fueling sector-leading growth through 2029.
The oil company's LNG investments in Qatar and Port Arthur LNG in Texas will fuel growth over the next few years. Meanwhile, it expects to deliver the first oil from its $8 billion Willow project in Alaska in 2029.
The company's growing free cash flow will support its plan to deliver dividend growth within the top 25% of companies in the S&P 500. It has been growing its payout (which currently yields nearly 4%) at a more than 10% annual rate in recent years, including by 34% last year.
Visible growth coming down the pipeline through 2029
Enbridge is already one of the largest energy infrastructure operators in North America. However, it's about to get a lot bigger. The Canadian pipeline and utility company currently has a staggering 28 billion Canadian dollars ($20.4 billion) of commercially secured expansion projects in its backlog. These projects include oil pipeline expansions, new natural gas pipelines, gas utility growth projects, and renewable energy developments. Enbridge currently has projects scheduled to come online through 2029.
The company can easily fund that massive project backlog. Enbridge estimates it has CA$9 billion-CA$10 billion ($6.6 billion-$7.3 billion) of annual investment capacity between its post-dividend free cash flow and balance sheet flexibility within its targeted leverage range. Its current backlog would require about CA$8 billion-CA$9 billion ($5.8 billion-$6.6 billion), leaving it with CA$1 billion-CA$2 billion ($730 million-$1.5 billion) of excess investment capacity each year. It can use that flexibility to make bolt-on acquisitions and approve additional expansion projects. The company currently has an eye-popping CA$50 billion ($36.4 billion) of additional capital projects under development that it could approve through 2030.
Enbridge's drivers give it a lot of visibility into its future growth potential. It expects to grow its earnings by around a 5% annual rate through the end of the decade. That could support a similar growth rate for its nearly 6%-yielding dividend. Enbridge has raised its payout for 30 straight years.
Top-notch income stocks
Brookfield Renewable, ConocoPhillips, and Enbridge have visible cash-flow growth lined up through at least the end of the decade. Because of that, they should have plenty of fuel to continue increasing their high-yielding dividends. That makes them great stocks to buy and hold for a growing stream of passive dividend income through 2029, if not much longer.
